Improving ‘working memory’ makes mice smarter

Washington, March 26 (ANI): In a new study, scientists at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey found that mice trained to improve their working memory became more intelligent.

According to the researchers, their study suggests that similar improvements in working memory can help human beings enhance their brainpower.

“Working memory refers to a short-term memory system used to complete a task, such as remembering a phone number, a grocery list, reading comprehension, or something else not intended to be stored in long-term memory,” said co-author Louis Matzel, professor of psychology in Rutgers” School of Arts and Sciences.

Working with about 60 young adult, genetically heterogeneous mice, Matzel and his colleagues used mazes to put the mice through a series of exercises designed to challenge and improve their ability to retain and use current spatial information.

For example, they would allow a mouse to run through a particular maze (for a food reward) until he had the route down cold, and then teach him to run through a second maze.

The researchers would then start the mouse on his way through the first maze, stop him en route and stick him in the second maze.

This procedure is known to tax working memory, and was here found to promote an improvement in that skill.

“There is a lot of evidence from the literature on human intelligence that working memory and intelligence are correlated. But that doesn”t mean that one causes the other. So our question was, does improving an animal”s capacity for working memory make him smarter? And the answer, from our experiment, was yes,” Matzel said.

In fact, mice that underwent this working memory ‘exercise’ exhibited improved proficiency on a wide range of cognitive tests.

The research has been published in Current Biology. (ANI)

Jayalalithaa says Union Minister Raja threatened Madras HC judge

Chennai, July 2 (ANI): Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday accused Union Communication Minister A. Raja of threatening the Madras High Court Judge R Reghupati.

In a signed statement released to the media the AIADMK chief said, “Though the honourable judge refrained from naming the Union Minister, it does not require any super-human intelligence to conclude that it was none other than A.Raja, who was also involved in telecom scam.”

Jayalalithaa’s statement came after a day of the stalling of the Tamil Nadu state Assembly by opposition parties who demanded the revelation of the Union minister’s name who had threatened the judge. n Monday, Justice Reghupathy alleged that a sitting Union Minister had attempted to influence him to pass an order in favor Dr Krishnamurthy, and his son Sridhar, who are facing a CBI inquiry in a mark sheet forgery scam.

Jayalalithaa demanded the sacking of A Raja from the Union Cabinet, saying this is for the first time that any judge had accused a union minister of threatening him.

Raja the DMK representative in the Union Cabinet, is said to be a close aide of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Raja denied Jayalalithaa’s charges. Union Law Minister M.Veerappa Moily said Wednesday he would verify the case and then comment on it. (ANI)

Advanced ground-penetrating radar may be used to spot tunnels dug by criminals

Washington, June 30 (ANI): Patrol agents along the US border are using a sophisticated ground penetrating radar to spot illegal tunnels dug by criminals.

While most tunnels are used to move drugs or people, they could also be used to move in weapons and explosives for a terrorist attack.

Tunnels are a serious challenge for border patrol agents because they can begin and end almost anywhere.

Their entrances and exits are often hidden inside old warehouses or under trees; if old ones are discovered, new ones are quickly begun.

Of every tunnel ever discovered by US border patrol agents, 60 percent have been found in the last three years.

“All of them have been found by accident or human intelligence,” said Ed Turner, a project manager with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S and T). “None by technology,” he added.

To battle these secret burrows in the 21st century, S and T thinks this will have to change. In partnership with Lockheed Martin, DHS S and T is pursuing a fresh approach that uses sophisticated ground penetrating radar.

The new design technology is to place the radar antennas in a trailer that will be towed by a Border Patrol truck.

The antennas shoot a signal directly into the ground and use it to construct a multi-colored picture of the earth.

Tunnels show up as red, yellow, and aquamarine dots against a blue background. Border patrols agents would see these images on a monitor mounted inside their truck.

Ground penetrating radar is a promising technology because it is already used by civil engineers to reconstruct underground images.

These engineers, however, are usually only interested in detecting cables or pipes that may be a few meters beneath the earth.

S and T must find tunnels that often run much deeper.

To find these, the radar uses much lower frequencies that penetrate the ground much better, and a sophisticated new imaging technology that can display clear pictures of deep tunnels.

If successful, the tunnel detection technology will help agents locate and plug tunnels almost as fast as the criminals can dig them. (ANI)

Army exercise in Punjab ends

Chandigarh, May 6 (ANI): The Indian Army concluded a major training exercise named ‘Hind Shakti’ today.

Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor referred to the exercise as another step in army’s continued endeavour to fine tune its strategy.

He also complimented the KHARGA Corps for its operational readiness, which he said, was of an exceptionally high order.

Lieutenant General TK Sapru also witnessed the 72-hour long exercise conducted in the Punjab plains from May 3.

The exercise focused on pulling to test its premier corps, the KHARGA Corps, in conduct of offensive tasks.

The exercise entailed participation by Mechanised and Re-organised Plains Infantry Division in a blitzkrieg type armoured incursion, emphasising rapid penetration into enemy territory.

The exercise included effective offensive support by air power and attack helicopters. Units of KHARGA Corps were also tested for their ability to undertake and sustain operational manoeuvres against intensive electronic and information warfare.

The condensed exercise was conducted over three days and nights.

The Blue Land troops achieved battlefield transparency gaining knowledge of enemy deployment through sustained and constant surveillance of the battle space.

They were constantly aided by satellite imagery, helicopter borne surveillance systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and ground-based surveillance resources such as Long Range Recce and observation system (LORROS), Battle field surveillance Radars (BFSRs) and Weapon Locating Radars (WLRs) apart from the human intelligence.

With greater situational awareness achieved, the manoeuvres were performed through air craft borne, heliborne and land troops in a highly effective manner.

During the course of the exercise, the operational efficiency of the most potent force of Indian Army was put to test in war like conditions.

Army successfully validated the capability of the KHARGA corps in network centric warfare, as also in a nuclear-biological-chemical warfare environment. (ANI)

Space experiment sheds new light on bone loss

Washington, March 31 (ANI): A space experiment conducted by Italian scientists has for the first time shown that a lack of resistance, that is gravity, activates bone-destroying cells.

An article on the study says that the finding attains significance as it may help better understand why bedridden patients and astronauts experience bone loss.

Published in The FASEB Journal, the article also says that the outcome provides an entirely new drug target for stopping the process.

“This study cuts straight to the bone in terms of why our skeletons deteriorate with disuse,” said Dr. Gerald Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

“As is the case with human intelligence, bone loss is an example of ‘use it or lose it’. This study from space has pinpointed the cellular culprits that destroy our bones when we don’t use them to support weight,” Weissmann added.

The researchers used two sets of bone-destroying cells, called “osteoclasts”, obtained from the bone marrow of mice femurs.

They launched one set into space via the European Space Agency’s 2007 FOTON-M3 mission, and kept the other set on Earth.

On the satellite, the cells were maintained in custom-designed bioreactors equipped with automatic nutrient providers.

At the same time, the other set of cells were kept in the same type of bioreactors on the Earth’s surface.

The experiment was stopped after twelve days, and the cells were examined.

The researchers found an increase in genes involved in osteoclast maturation and activity, as well as increased bone loss when compared to the cells on Earth.

“Space might be the final frontier, but we’ve got some serious hurdles to clear before we conquer microgravity, and bone loss is one of them,” Weissmann said.

“Even here on Earth, we all face bone loss. Osteoporosis inexorably hits men and women alike, and this European study points to one cause: lack of resistance,” Weissmann added. (ANI)

ISI’s current logistical support to LeT greater than ever before: US officials

London, Mar.27 (ANI): The revamped US strategy to counter militancy in Afghanistan and Pakistan is scheduled to be announced on Friday, but according to media reports the questionable relation between Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and banned terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) can seriously dent the Obama Administration’s plans.

According to a report in The Independent, US officials believe that the ISI through its ‘S Wing’ is offering logistical support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) even more than it was doing previously.

US officials say that they have a perfect report about this nefarious connection based on human intelligence and electronic intercepts.

Earlier, media reports also suggested that the ISI is also involved in funding and assisting the Taliban so as to widen the insurgent’s retaliation against the US led allied forces in Afghanistan.

This clearly indicates that neither the democratic government of Asif Ali Zardari nor the Army led by General Ashfaq Kayani has been able to suppress this link.

Pakistan military experts, however believe that despite the US leadership enjoys a good leadership with the General Kayani as well as ISI chief Lieutenant-General Shuja Pasha there is a ‘double game being played.

“What the US is trying to do is put a lot of pressure on Pakistan, saying, you have to be categorical in your commitment to the war on terror. They have grave doubts about that commitment, as they are many forces who are still active and are inimical to US interests,” former Pak General, Talat Masood said.

The ISI has long been maintaining ties with the Taliban in Afghanistan where it feels an increased Indian intervention could dwarf its presence and control, and revelations made by the US officials about the ISI supporting the LeT is a worry for the Obama Administration which on the heels of laying out a new plan to counter the militancy in Afghanistan and hoping for some positive result in the eight year long ‘war on terror’. LeT responsible for Kupwara gunbattle: Army

Srinagar, March 25 (ANI): The Indian Army on Wednesday said that the Pakistan-based terrorist group Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT) along with some other foreign outfits, were responsible for the gunbattle with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Addressing the press here, Brigadier General Gurmeet Singh said that high-order arms and ammunitions recovered from the terrorists indicate Pakistani help.

He pointed out that the terrorists couldn’t have accessed the weaponry without state backing.

According to reports, the Lashkar-e-Taiba has itself owned up responsibility for the encounter, which went on for five days and claimed the lives of seventeen militants and eight security personnel.

Brigadier Singh warned of more attacks against the Indian troops.

He further revealed that the Army, with the help of human intelligence agencies, had accurate information regarding the movements of the militants and assured that the security forces were ready to fight all the challenges.

The militants had sneaked into Kupwara as the dense forest range is close to the Line of Control (LoC).

On receiving information about militant infiltration in the forest area, the Army, assisted by local police had acted promptly and launched a gunbattle on March 20. (ANI)
