Pak pigeon has police in flutter

Amritsar, May 29 — This gives a whole new meaning to cross-border infiltration, but it’s not clear if it will add a feather in the cap of the Punjab police. In an era of spy planes and satellites, the Amritsar (rural) police have detained a white pigeon that could have been – the police claim – used as a Pakistani spy.

The pigeon was reportedly spotted in Ramdas, a tiny town close to the Indo-Pak border, with a Pakistani stamp imprinted and a Pakistani phone number written on its feathers. Excited residents took the bird to the nearest police station.

The pigeon’s fate will be decided once officials there decide what to do with it. With news of the low-tech ‘spy’ spreading, the police have kept the bird in a special cage.

It was earlier simply locked in a room. “The people of the area had come with the pigeon that had a Pakistani stamp and telephone number on it,” said Jagjit Singh, station house officer of Ramdas police station.

Pigeon races are known to be held across the border, and it was possible that this particular pigeon took a longer route in one such race and lost its way, a police official suggested.

Dr “Death” Patel was insecure about his own abilities

Brisbane, May 14 (ANI): Dr Jayant ‘Death’ Patel had expressed a lack of confidence in his ability to treat patients, questioning whether he should even do complex operations, it has emerged.

He made the remarks at the Bundaberg Base Hospiatal after failing to locate the cause of a patient’s post-operative bleeding.

Dr David Risson, who was a principal house officer at Bundaberg in 2004, said he was called into the operating theatre as an extra pair of hands for the second operation on Kemps, the Courier Mail reports.

“I recall Patel saying ””Maybe, I should start thinking about not doing these type of procedures anymore””,” Dr Risson said.

The incriminating facts put forth by the plaintiff include, Patel performing an oesophagectomy on Kemps and later reopening him in an attempt to find the source of the unexplained post-operative bleeding.

Later he had ordered for Kemps to be taken off the ventilator assuming he was brain-dead without following necessary protocol to arrive at such a conclusion.

Pak authorities yet to make arrests in murdered Hindu leader’s case eight years on

Karachi, May 8 (ANI): Despite the Pakistan government giving several assurances to protect minorities, several marginalized sections of society, especially the Hindus, continue to bear the brunt of the government’s apathy in the country.

The fact is evident as in spite of assuring action against the murderers of prominent Hindu leader Sudhamchand Chawla, the Sindh government has failed to take any action against incumbent Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani even after eight years of Chawla’s death.

Chawla, the president of the Hindu Panchait, was killed in January 2002 in Jacobabad, where influential feudal lords such as the Jakhrani tribe led by Jakhrani and the Soomro tribe led by former Senate chairman Muhammadmian Soomro were struggling for political control at that time.

A first information report (FIR) was filed against against Ejaz Jakhrani and his relatives Mumtaz Jakhrani and Majeed Jakhrani.

The police also named Jakhrani’s father, Mir Ahmed Khan alias Babul Khan Jakhrani, in the FIR for forcing the culprits to kill Chawla, The Daily Times reports.

However, due their political influence there has been little action against those named in the FIR.

A couple of years back, the then district police officer of Jacobabad Munir Ahmed Khuhro had written a letter to the Sindh inspector general asking for permission to arrest Jakhrani, but his mail went unanswered.

When asked about the latest development in the case, Jacobabad City Police Station Station House Officer (SHO) Sikandar Soomro confirmed that FIR was lodged against Jakhrani and others, but also revealed that the names were withdrawn later.

“Later the names were withdrawn from the FIR and I don’t know how it happened, as it was done before I joined this police station. The case is now against unidentified persons and has an A-class status, which means it was suspended temporarily and can be reopened at any time,” Soomro said. (ANI)

`Dr. Death’ Patel threatened to quit when patient transfer was arranged

Brisbane, Apr.30 (ANI): Brisbane’s Supreme Court has been told that controversial Indian origin surgeon Dr. Jayant Patel went purple with rage when a dangerously ill patient was transferred from the Bundaberg Hospital to Brisbane.

The court was told that he told a junior doctor that he would leave the hospital if the transfer of the patient took place, forcing medical staff to reconsider.

This information came out as the crown (prosecution) presented leading evidence about an operation on James Grave, even though Patel is not facing any charge involving his surgery.

Prosecutor Ross Martin told the court it was important the jury heard evidence about Mr Grave, who had oesophageal cancer, because the case was a “warning” to Patel to not perform the complex oesophagectomy operation, reports The Courier Mail.

The court was told that Grave was diagnosed with oesophagectomy on early June 6, 2003, but deteriorated and was eventually transferred to Brisbane.

Dr Carl Kennedy said he was in his second year as a doctor at the Bundaberg Hospital when Grave was a patient in the intensive care unit.

He said, as a junior, rather than having input into the treatment of patients, he would follow instructions from senior medical staff.

Dr Kennedy explained that Patel had recorded several times that Grave was improving and, by June 12, after six days in the ICU, Patel made a note that Grave was doing very well after surgery to repair his operation wound.

Dr Kennedy said that, after 11 days in the intensive care unit, Grave was not doing very well. He had had two further operations on a seeping wound and twice had tubes inserted to drain off excess fluid.

“I thought as a junior house officer, (Mr) Grave was getting sicker and needed much more support. He needed to go to Brisbane where there were much more facilities and where they were able to deal with such patients,” he said.

Dr Kennedy said he understood the Bundaberg ICU was only for short-term patients and Grave had been there for much longer.

“It wasn”t a case where it was staff could no longer do for this gentleman. It looked as though he would need long-term ventilation and support of his heart. It was a more complicated case than Bundaberg would normally handle,” he added.

Dr Kennedy said there was always a risk such patients might not receive the degree of care they could at larger centres.

He said he took administrative steps to have Grave moved and he found a bed for him at the (then) Royal Brisbane Hospital..

However, Patel found out and confronted Dr Kennedy.

“He was quite upset that the patient was going and said to me: `If that patient leaves, then I leave the hospital,” Dr Kenendy said.

After discussions between senior staff it was decided to keep Grave at Bundaberg for a further 24 hours.

Patel, 60, has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Phillips, 46, Mervyn Morris, 75, and Geradus Wihelmus Gosewinus Kemps, 77, and causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Rodney Vowles, 62, on various dates between March 2003 and April 2005.

Grave eventually recovered in the ICU at the Brisbane”s Mater Hospital before being returned to the Bundaberg Hospital where he was eventually discharged. He died in January 2004.

Lahore High Court issues notices to Asif, ex-girlfriend Veena Malik

Lahore, Apr.16 (ANI): The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to both fast bowler Mohammed Asif and his estranged girl friend Veena Malik on their respective petitions seeking action against each other.

While the court has issued a notice to television actress Malik on a petition filed by Asif seeking orders to stop her from initiating any action against him and directed her to file a reply, it has also asked Asif’s counsel to respond to Malik’s petition.

Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry also sought a reply from the Ghalib Market Police Station House Officer (SHO) for not registering the First Information Report (FIR) against Asif on Malik’s complaint.

Veena’s counsel argued before the court that the police officer was not registering an FIR against Asif even after an additional district and sessions judge had directed him to do so.

During the hearing, Asif’s lawyer rejected all charges labelled against his client and said that Malik was falsely accusing Asif of fraud because the cricketer had refused to marry her.

Earlier, Malik had asked the concerned authorities to register a case against Asif for giving her ‘fake’ cheques.

In her plea, Malik claimed that she had given 10 million rupees to Asif, and the cheque that the fast bowler had given her to return the money had bounced.

Malik claimed that she had supported Asif both ‘emotionally’ and ‘financially’ during his bad days, and now she ‘at least’ wants her money back.

Malik had earlier sued Asif for recovery of 3.4 million rupees.

“When he (Asif) was banned from cricket and when no one was willing to support or help him I stood by his side and I gave him money which he said he would pay me back when things improved,” Malik had said.

“Now that his situation is better he is trying to avoid meeting his commitment but I want my money back, it is my hard earned money,” she added.

Asif was romantically linked to Malik, and there were rumours last year that both got secretly married in London, which has been denied by both of them.

However, Asif got married to a girl from Lahore, Hina, recently. (ANI)

Patel manslaughter trial hears from doctors

Jayant Patel’s Brisbane manslaughter trial has heard more about the post-operative care of a patient who died after having surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in south-east Queensland.

Mervyn John Morris, 77, died in 2003 after Patel removed part of his bowel.

He is one of three men Patel has pleaded not guilty to unlawfully killing.

Dr Nigel Chikolwa was the principal house officer at Bundaberg when he assessed Mr Morris three weeks after surgery.

He said Mr Morris had fluid in his lungs, was anaemic, had low blood pressure and was dehydrated.

The court also heard from Dr Emma Igras who said Mr Morris went back to surgery a week after his initial operation because his bowel was poking through a hole made for a colostomy bag.

Dr Emma Britten, who was a third-year medical student at the time, also testified about Mr Morris’ post operative care.

The trial continues.

Fellow doctor testifies at Patel manslaughter trial

A doctor has told Jayant Patel’s manslaughter trial about the deteriorating health of a man who had surgery at the Bundaberg Hospital in south-east Queensland.

Patel, 59, has pleaded not guilty in the supreme court in Brisbane to unlawfully killing Mervyn John Morris, James Edward Phillips and “Gerry” Kemps and causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Vowles.

Dr Nigel Chikolwa was the principal house officer at Bundaberg hospital when he assessed Mr Morris after he had surgery in 2003 and shortly before Mr Morris died.

Dr Chikolwa said Mr Morris had a urinary tract infection, low blood sugar, low blood pressure and fluid in his stomach.

Dr Chikolwa said the 75-year-old was dehydrated and was not a well man.

The trial has previously heard Patel’s removal of part of Mr Morris’s lower bowel was the wrong thing to do and his post operative care was inadequate.

Shopian Case: J and K High court grants bail to four cops

Srinagar, Sep.11 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Friday granted bail to four policemen who were accused of having a role in the controversial Shopian murder case.

The policemen-Former Superintendent of Police of Shopian Javed Iqbal Mattoo, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rohit Baskota, Station House Officer Shopian Shafiq Ahmed and Sub-inspector Gazi Abdul Rehman-were released on payment of a bond of Rs.50, 000 each. The four had been accused of destroying evidence related to the case.

Last month, the Jammu and Kashmir Government had decided to hand over the controversial rape and murder case involving two women to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The State Cabinet unanimously took the decision hours after opposition parties created an uproar in the State Assembly alleging tampering of DNA test reports in the case.

Friday’s granting of bail came almost a month after the same court rejected an earlier bail plea.

The court had then rejected their plea under the Section 497 of CRPC (discretionary powers of the judge to grant bail or not).

The four had also moved a petition in the Supreme Court against the ruling of J and K High Court, to arrest these officers and also to collect blood samples to prepare the DNA mapping of these officers.

An apex court bench headed by the Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan had asked the Shopian sessions court to expeditiously consider the bail pleas.

During the hearing, the bench had said the High Court should have left it to the superior police officers to investigate the case and should have entitled the police officers to move for bail before the appropriate court.

The bench had also expressed surprise that only because of agitation the investigation was handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The J and K High Court, hearing a Public Interest Litigation Petition (PIL) filed by J and K High Court Bar Association in connection with alleged rape and murder of Neelofar and Aasiya Jan in Shopian ordered for the arrest of four police officers who were suspended in the same the case. The court also ordered to constitute SIT and DNA mapping of these officers. (ANI)

Pakistani actress Meera denies being married

Islamabad, August 31 (ANI): Pakistani actress Meera has denied being married to Attiqur Rehman.

Defence-A Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Abid Rasheed had alleged that he had seen the marriage certificate that showed that the wedding was solemnised on September 2, 2007.

The SHO said that the marriage was registered with the local union council, and the nikah khawan in Makkah Colony also confirmed the nuptials, reports the Daily Times.

The allegation emerged after Meera’s mother shifted antique furniture belonging to Attiqur, who accused her of secretly shifting the items without his knowledge.

Attiqur also claimed being beaten by his father-in-law, mother-in-law, and their other son-in-law Raheel.

Cops were subsequently called in and five men of each party were taken into custody.

Meera, however, has slammed these claims, saying that her association with Attique was restricted to business dealings.

She further accused Attiqur of blackmailing her.

She even alleged that Attique recently attacked her house with the intention of killing her, but she was not there at the time. (ANI)

Engineer arrested for attempting to bribe minister

Bhopal, May 27 (IANS) An engineer, suspended by Madhya Pradesh’s Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Gaurishankar Bisen for committing irregularities, has been arrested after he tried to bribe the minister to revoke his suspension, police said Wednesday.

Executive engineer R.N. Karaiya, posted in Bhind district, was suspended last week by the minister on the charge of committing several irregularities and a departmental probe was ordered against him.

However, Karaiya, along with one of his associates, reached the minister’s residence late Tuesday and offered him Rs.500,000 for revoking his suspension.

The minister asked the two to leave his house at once. He later informed the police which registered a case against the duo under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

“While Karaiya has been arrested, we are looking for his associate,” T.T. Nagar police station house officer Umesh Tiwari told IANS.

“The engineer was suspended by me during my Bhind tour last week following several complaints of irregularities against him and a departmental inquiry was also ordered against him. He, however, came to my house yesterday and offered me a bribe of Rs.five lakh (Rs.500,000). I reported the matter to the police,” Bisen told IANS.

7th century Buddhist structures in Kashmir face destruction

London, May 4 (ANI): Reports indicate that the seventh century Buddhist structures at Parihaspora in Pattan, Kashmir, India, are neglected and face imminent destruction.

According to a report carried in kashmirwatch.com, despite being the an area of great archeological importance housing ancient seventh century Buddhist structures including a temple of Kanishka’s and Lalitaditya’s eras, the Gawadran area in Parihaspora Pattan in north Kashmir Baramulla district is under the sickle these days.

Locals allege their repeated pleas to the concerned agencies have failed to move them.

Quoting a delegation of local residents, KNS news agency said people allege the complicity and patronage of the Tehsildar Pattan and blame Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station Pattan as being responsible for some irreparable damage being done to the archeological site and its structures.

Even though the structures at Gawadran Parihaspora are protected monuments under the Ancient Monuments Act, yet the extraction of soil from the area continues without any respite.

They say a local landlord, who has procured some 40 kanals of land around the archeological site for setting up some business there, is using mechanical excavators for soil extraction.

The extraction process has been going on here without any respite for past many years and now the situation is such that the monuments might cave in any time, the delegation said.

The officials in the Archives department say they had reported the matter at Police Post Mirgund as well as at Police Station Pattan but the SHO there is not ready to entertain an FIR in this regard, reported KNS.

Confirming the archeological importance of the area vis-a-vis its history dating back to Kanishka’s time, KNS quoted an official as saying that there is evidence suggesting that in the seventh century, Kanishka has organized a Buddhist conference at Parihaspora.

According to experts, there are proofs suggesting presence of some really important archeological artifacts in the area which needs further exploration.

However, if the extraction of soil and subsequent constructions continue, there is little doubt that the world might lose this important historic site forever, warned an official.

He said as per the Ancient Monuments Act, there can be no extraction or construction activity even in the vicinity of any protested place.

Whatever is happening at Parihaspora is completely illegal and violation of law and it couldn’t happen without the active connivance of police, the official, who didn’t want to be named, confessed. (ANI)
