England v Bangladesh test to start after rain

Play on the third day of the second test between England and Bangladesh will start after a rain delay at 1215GMT with the hosts deciding to enforce the follow-on at Old Trafford on Sunday.

England captain Andrew Strauss opted to put Bangladesh in again after his team bowled Bangladesh out for 216, in reply to the home side’s first-innings total of 419.

The tourists lost all ten first innings wickets after tea on the second day having reached 126-0. Tamim Iqbal top-scored with 108 before off-spinner Graeme Swann claimed 5-76 as Bangladesh’s fragile batting line-up capitulated in the final session.

Bangladesh need a win to draw the series after the hosts eased to an eight-wicket victory at Lord’s in the first test.

Brad Pitt to compete with Beckham for World Cup bid

London, June 4 (ANI): Actor Brad Pitt will compete with ace footballer David Beckham after the Hollywood superstar joined the committee trying to bring the 2018 World Cup to the United States.

Last month, Beckham officially presented England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and now Pitt has joined the USA Bid Committee.

“Soccer is a truly global sport and the opportunity to join the effort to have the US host the world’s greatest sporting event again is a great honour,” The Mirror quoted Pitt, as saying.

Comedian Drew Carey and actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger are also on the US committee.

Both countries are also bidding for the 2022 World Cup, as are Australia, Russia, Spain-Portugal and the Netherlands-Belgium.

Japan, South Korea and Qatar are also bidding for the 2022 tournament.

The US staged the tournament in 1994, while England hosted the European Championships in 1996.

FIFA’s executive committee will select the 2018 and 2022 hosts in a vote on December 2. (ANI)

I have good gut feeling – South Africa’s Parreira

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said he had “a good feeling in the pit of my stomach” about South Africa’s World Cup chances despite the host nation being among the lowest-ranked teams in the tournament.

Parreira said a recent 4-0 friendly win over Thailand and increased intensity in training had given him a positive feeling.

South Africa, drawn with France, Mexico and Uruguay in Group A, are seeking to avoid becoming the first World Cup hosts to fail to get past the first round of their tournament.

“My stomach tells me we are going to do well. I have a very positive feeling. Every time I see them (the players) train, they are looking better and better. Every day they spent together, you can see the improvement,” he told a media briefing on Sunday.

South Africa play Bulgaria in Soweto on Monday as they continue their preparations for the opening World Cup game against Mexico in Johannesburg on June 11.

“The idea is to take it step-by-step but always go forward, never going backwards,” Parreira said.

“We want to keep improving on every performance and then we should have the confidence that we are going to do well at the World Cup.”

South Africa then face Colombia on Thursday and Parreira said he wanted another international on May 31 before his team’s final warm-up game against Denmark on June 5 in Pretoria.

Afridi, Razzaq contemplating retiring from Test cricket ?

Lahore, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi along with all rounder Abdul Razzaq are reportedly planning to bid adieu to Test cricket.

According to sources, both Afridi and Razzaq, who last played an international five-day game in 2006, would meet the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt to convey their decision regarding retiring from Test cricket.

“They are not interested in playing Test matches any longer and just want to concentrate on extending their international careers in the one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches,” The Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

They also said neither Afridi nor Razzaq are interested in touring England for the Test series against the hosts and Australia in July, as they want to spend their time with their families. (ANI)

Afridi says aggression, ending ‘mental hang up’ critical for Pak success against Oz

Karachi, May 20 (ANI): Flamboyant Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes that his team suffers from a ‘mental hang up’ when it comes to competing with the World Champions Australia, and he wants to help players break that ‘jinx’ concerning the Kangaroos.

In the recent years, Pakistan have had a nightmarish record against Australia, with the latest being the January-February tour where Pakistan failed to register even a single win against the hosts.

It came close to defeating Australia in the semifinal of the just concluded ICC T20 World Championship in the West Indies, but faltered at the last moment.

Afridi said the loss almost shattered his heart, but he pointed towards the positive aspect of the loss that at least Pakistan played some tough and competitive cricket.

“I would have been left completely shattered but what gave me hope was the fact that we played aggressive cricket and a victory against Australia was within our reach,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“It would have been great had we go on to win that match but once again the Australians proved that they are still the best in the world,” he added.

The hard hitting all-rounder pointed out that defeating Australia has never been easy, but the teams competing against the world champions would have to match the aggression of the Kangaroos to stand any chance.

“I must make it clear that beating Australia will never be easy. But I’m also confident that we can do it. What we need is to overcome our mental hang up and just play brave cricket. The thing is that the Aussies are mentally very tough and the only way to beat them is by going out there and giving it our best shot. You have to be really aggressive against that team because there is no other way to tackle them,” Afridi said.

Afridi said he is eagerly waiting for the two T20 encounters against Australia during the upcoming series in England, as the best chance of ending the team’s poor run against Australia is to defeat them in the game in which they are considered to be the best.

“It would take a gigantic effort to beat Australia in the Test series but Twenty20 cricket is a different story. We have a very good team for the shortest format and can beat any opposition on our day,” he said. (ANI)

Australia humble Windies as hosts bow out

Gros Islet (West Indies), May 12 (ANI): Australia knocked hosts the West Indies out of the World Twenty20 and kept alive the possibility of an Anglo-Australian final with a dominating six-wicket win here on Tuesday.

West Indies, in a match they had to win by 24 runs to reach the semi-finals, was bowled out for just 105 at the Beausejour Stadium. Australia, in reply, lost two wickets on 31.

But Brad Haddin (42) saw Australia to the verge of victory before he got out with two runs needed to West Indies captain Chris Gayle.

The occasional off-spinner then ended the match with a ball that went for five wides, a delivery that summed up his team”s performance on the day.

Australia, who finished on 109 for four, won with 22 balls to spare. Their win ensured Sri Lanka, last year”s losing finalists, also went through to the semi-finals as Group F runners-up.

England will play Sri Lanka, who earlier Tuesday knocked out India with a five-wicket win, in the first semi-final here on Thursday. The second semi-final will see Australia playing defending champions Pakistan, also at Beausejour, on Friday. The final takes place at Barbados”s Kensington Oval on Sunday. (ANI)

Man Utd beat Sunderland to take title race to final game

Manchester United ensured the Premier League title race would go to the final day as they responded to Chelsea’s win at Anfield with a nervy 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Sunday.

Chelsea’s 2-0 success earlier had put the Londoners four points ahead but Alex Ferguson’s team clung on to their hopes of an unprecedented fourth successive title by closing the gap back to one with a game each remaining.

Chelsea, who have a superior goal difference of nine, are at home to Wigan Athletic while United host Stoke City.

Nani shot United into a 28th-minute lead at the Stadium of Light but they wasted several other good chances, notably through Dimitar Berbatov and had to work hard to keep the hosts at bay in the second half.

ICC reapproves suspended Antigua ground

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua has been passed fit to host international cricket again after being suspended for 12 months due to a pitch fiasco, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said.

The second test between England and hosts West Indies was abandoned as a draw after only 10 balls last February after the ground was declared unfit and dangerous to play.

“As per ICC instructions, over the past year, appropriate work was carried out and monitored by the WICB and an inspection of the ground was carried out by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC match referees,” the sport’s governing body said in a statement. ‘Hosts’ West Indies have an edge in ICC World T20 Championship: Rameez

Lahore, Apr.29 (ANI): With only a day left for the commencement of the ICC World T20 Championship, former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja has said that while all major teams stand a chance to pocket the coveted title, it is the hosts West Indies who would have an edge.

Rameez said it was difficult to pick a team as the favourite for the T20 title.

“All teams share equal chances in the event and predictions are hard to make in the shortest format. May be the West Indies might have a slight edge being the hosts,” The Daily Times quoted Rameez, as saying.

Speaking on Pakistan’s chances of defending the title, he said the defending champions have some quality spinners who could do well in Caribbean conditions.

“Several quality spinners could boost Pakistan’s title campaign in the Twenty20 World Cup,” Rameez said.

He, however, pointed out that Pakistan would greatly miss the services of fast bowler Umar Gul, who failed to recover on time from a shoulder injury sustained during the training camp.

Rameez said Pakistan’s hopes would largely depend on experienced players like skipper Shahid Afridi and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq.

“Afridi and Razzaq hold the key for Pakistan,” he said. (ANI)

Refugees given shelter 30 years ago killed Benazir : Zardari

Peshawar, Apr.28 (ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that those who were given shelter in the country more than 30 years ago have now turned against it and killed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

“The refugees turned out to be bitter enemies in the end as they were the people who killed their hosts and their families and led to the destruction of their property,”
Zardari said while addressing a tribal jirga at the Governor House here.

Zardari said Pakistanis have rendered major sacrifices in the past, and urged the people of the region to protect their land at all costs.

“We will not let anyone take even an inch of our land and will protect it at the cost of our lives… as we know how much sacrifices were rendered to get our liberation from the British,” The News quoted Zardari, as saying.

He admitted that the government was facing several challenges, but added that it would come out of it successfully.

Commenting on the change of name of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) to
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zardari said the people of the region have got their true recognition.

“The decision of the new name was the result of a consensus that reflected the political maturity of the people and the political parties,” he added. (ANI)

Black Caps frustrate Aussies

Australia is set to bat again in the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington following a morning session of stubborn resistance on day four at Basin Reserve.

The Black Caps, who were forced to follow on, reached the lunch interval on 5 for 266 in their second innings, trailing Australia by 36 runs.

Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori was unbeaten on 60 and Brendon McCullum was not out on 39.

The hosts had started day four on 5 for 187 and needing 115 runs to make Australia bat again, and after a delayed start because of rain and wind, they set about frustrating the tourists’ bowling attack.

Vettori and McCullum scored at a steady run rate to compile a 83-run stand for the sixth wicket with the Black Caps skipper reaching his 22nd half-century during the session.

It was an admirable performance from the pair, considering the meek display produced by the Black Caps in their first innings when they were dismissed for a disappointing 157 in reply to Australia’s 5 for 459 (declared).

Parkes hosts heats for Elvis World Cup

Elvis Presley’s former tour manager is among the judges at the first Australian qualifier for the Elvis World Cup.

Parkes is hosting the competition and the winner will progress to the final, which is being held in Wales on July 1.

Thirty-five tribute artists have entered.

Parkes tourism manager Kelly Hendry says it is a great coup to have Joe Esposito judging the competitors, along with former Wiggle Greg Page.

“They’ll be judging each entrant on a range of qualities including vocals, movement, tribute to Elvis, engagement of the audience,” she said

“They’re looking for the overall package.”

She says the town is well-qualified to host the event.

“It’s the first time that the Elvis World Cup has ever been held,” she said.

“Parkes is an obvious choice to hold the Australian qualifier given our status as Australia’s Elvis capital.

“We’re expecting several hundred people to attend the event.”

When Jordan called new hubby “Pete” on live TV!

London, Mar 19 (ANI): It was a goof-up Katie Price will remember forever—she called her new husband “Pete” on live TV.

In fact, the glamour model constantly compared hubby Alex Reid to her ex Peter Andre when she appeared on ITV1’s This Morning

“Me and Pete…” before correcting herself and saying: “Me and Alex…” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

The 31-year-old beauty was on the show to tell hosts Phillip Schofield, 47, and Holly Willoughby, 29, about her reality show and her recent wedding to cage fighter Alex, 34.

But Jordan made a blooper by mentioning Peter, 37, and her marriage to him 10 times as she insisted she was “100percent happy” with her new life.

Comparing her second marriage to her first, she said: “It’s just completely different. It’s nice to be with someone where you can actually be yourself. There’s no stress.” (ANI)

England defeat Bangladesh in Chittagong Test

Chittagong (Bangladesh), Mar. 16 (ANI): England defeated Bangladesh in the first Test against Bangladesh by 181 runs, but were made to work hard on the final day.

Junaid Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim survived unscathed until lunch, with the former bringing up his first Test century in an inspirational knock, the BBC reports.

England looked short of ideas but Graeme Swann removed the pair in quick succession after a 167-run stand. The spinner then wrapped up the win to finish with match figures of 10-217 as the hosts crumbled to 331 all out.

The victory margin was convincing from England – and Alastair Cook will be satisfied with his first Test in charge – but Bangladesh”s fight during the second half of the game made them dig deeper than they would have imagined. The efforts of Siddique and Rahim should give the home side great heart.

The defeat means Bangladesh go 1-0 down in the two-match series

England 599 for 6 dec and 209 for 7 dec beat Bangladesh 296 and 331 (Siddique 106, Rahim 95, Swann 5-127) by 181 runs (ANI)

Swann takes five as England tightens grip

Graeme Swann grabbed five wickets to help England build a huge lead over Bangladesh on the third day of the first Test in Chittagong overnight.

The tourists ended the day on 5 for 131 in their second innings after opting to bat again instead of enforcing a follow-on despite having a 303-run first innings lead.

Resuming its first innings on 5 for 154, Bangladesh offered some resistance with vice captain Mushfiqur Rahim reaching a half-century.

However, a run out and then two wickets in one over from Swann brought an abrupt end to the home side’s innings.

Rahim shared an 113-run partnership with Naeem Islam, an eighth-wicket record for Bangladesh, before the hosts lost their last three wickets in the space of four balls.

Naeem was run out for 38 when left stranded attempting a second run after Rahim steered Tim Bresnan towards point. Carberry chased the ball and threw to wicketkeeper Matt Prior and Naeem had no chance to return.

Substitute fielder James Tredwell took a blinder at short mid-wicket in the next ball off Swann to dismiss Rahim, who departed on 79, making his fifth Test fifty.

Swann, who had earlier dropped a return catch of Naeem on 13, bowled Rubel Hossain two balls later to end the innings and complete his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests.

He finished with 5 for 90.
