Handcuff death sparks hotel hours debate

The New South Wales Police Association has called for hotel trading hours to be limited after the death of a man who was arrested outside a hotel early on Friday morning.

The 40-year-old and another man were being restrained by hotel security after an alleged assault at a Campbelltown hotel.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man and put him in the back of their van.

Officers say they handcuffed the second man, but when they tried to bring him to his feet he did not respond.

An ambulance was called and police performed CPR, but the 40-year-old died later in Campbelltown Hospital.

Because the man died after being taken into custody, police have formed an independent investigative team to look into the incident.

Association vice-president Scott Weber says the death highlights a need to curb trading hours.

“We’re sick and tired of being out there being abused, assaulted and threatened by drunken idiots who don’t know when to say they’ve had their last drinks,” he said.

“This needs to be enforced across the state to make sure not only can members of the public go out and have a safe night – and the workers at licenced premises – but also emergency services can be deployed to other areas to protect the community.”

The association is lobbying the State Government to reduce the trading hours of licensed venues and introduce lockouts in a bid to curb late-night violence.

But the hotels industry says the death is in contrast to an overall downward trend in alcohol-related violence.

Sally Fielke, the chief executive of the Australian Hotels Association NSW, says trading hours do not need to change.

“The details are still unclear,” she said.

“What we do know is that the hotel staff acted accordingly in asking this person to leave the venue. The rest is still under police investigation.

“It is a spurious argument, though, to say this incident wouldn’t have happened if hotels had been shut.

“The bottom line is that alcohol-related violence has decreased by 6 per cent in the last 12 months and is continuing to decline.”

Ms Fielke says the incident could have occurred at any time of day or night, regardless of hotel trading times.

Rail link on track to deliver jobs surge

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser says up to 800 additional workers are needed to build a vital coal rail link in the state’s north.

The 69-kilometre northern ‘missing link’ will connect the northern Bowen Basin to the Abbot Point terminal near Bowen, south of Townsville.

Construction is due to start in May and the project is expected to be completed in 2012.

Mr Fraser told State Parliament a variety of skill sets are needed.

“Ranging from labourers, concreters, surveyors and plant operators to engineering and administrative staff,” he said.

“It’s estimated that in addition to these roles directly involved in delivering the project, approximately 2,700 local jobs will be supported in other industries such as hospitality, manufacturing and equipment and material supplies.”

Call for convention centre to bolster tourism

A Federal Opposition MP says Hervey Bay is missing out on tourism growth because it does not have a convention centre.

The Member for Hinkler, Paul Neville, says the state and federal governments need to help councils fund big community projects.

He says without a convention centre, the city does not take full advantage of its tourism resources.

“Hervey Bay doesn’t have a town hall, it doesn’t have a civic centre, it doesn’t have a convention centre,” Mr Neville said.

“It’s a tourist town that could do with something like a convention centre.

“We’ve got direct flights to Sydney and we’ve got very high quality resorts, so it is an ideal town for big conventions.”

Military style motel gets green light

The Rockhampton Regional Council has approved a multi-million dollar military-themed motel development.

The $26 million facility, including 115 rooms, a convention centre and restaurant, will be built at a heritage-listed Army barracks.

Project designer Russell Winnett says the motel will incorporate the site’s history.

“It will have staff that will have military type uniforms, not literally military uniforms, but will have that feel about them,” he said.

“The decor in the place will have some sort of military feel about it without that going overboard.

“We’re looking to retain that feel right throughout the hotel so even the rooms will have some small design features.

“It’s just something very very different, instead of your normal run of the mill hotel or motel accommodation.

“It’ll attract all sorts of guests, everywhere from people that are just normally requiring accommodation in the Rockhampton district to people choosing to stay at an interesting place, we expect it will be a destination in its own right.”

Hotels shrug off Obama no-show

The hospitality industry says the cancellation of US president Barack Obama’s visit to Canberra will not have a negative effect on hotel operators.

Stephen Fanner from the Australian Hotels Association says accommodation has been so tight in Canberra recently the hotels will have no problem filling those rooms.

He says it will make space available for people wanting to visit the National Gallery’s Masterpieces from Paris exhibition.

“The hotels that would have been accommodating the president’s delegation will probably get paid anyway, and in any case they’ll probably welcome those people again when the visit occurs in June,” he said.

“What it will do is open up some of those hotel rooms that were blocked out for people that want to come to Canberra on that weekend and see the National Gallery, which is a good thing.”

Holiday Inn hotel made of key cards is world’s first

Melbourne, Sep 18 (ANI): A Holiday Inn hotel made entirely of key cards has been unveiled in New York.

The 37-square-metre hotel, built by world record-holding Cardstacker Bryan Berg, is made from more than 200,000 key cards and weighs 1814 kilograms.

It includes a guest bedroom, bathroom and lobby, with life-sized furniture.

The design was created by Holiday Inn, the world’s largest hotel group, to mark the relaunch of 1200 of its hotels around the world.

“The Key Card Hotel is a fun and interactive way to showcase the changes happening at our hotels and is the only structure of its kind to ever be created by a hotel brand,” News.com.au quoted Kevin Kowalski, Senior Vice President, Global Brand Management, Holiday Inn, as saying.

Berg, who will also build a freestanding three-metre replica of New York’s Empire State Building in the lobby of the Key Card Hotel using Holiday Inn playing cards, said constructing the hotel has been a great challenge.

“This is my largest cardstacking challenge to date and the only card creation I have ever made at full human scale,” Berg added about the hotel.

The first 250 guests who attended the Key Card Hotel grand opening received a free night stay at any Holiday Inn.

The company’s 1 billion dollar relaunch is one of the largest in the history of the hospitality industry. (ANI)

Muthoot’s family alleges conspiracy behind murder

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 29 (ANI): A week after Kerala business tycoon Paul Muthoot was found murdered, his family has refuted Kerala Police’s road rage claim saying that there’s something more creepy behind his death.

Jnanamma Thomas, Muthoot’s grandmother refuted Kerala police’s road rage angle, alleging a cover-up of a brutal murder of her grandson .

“They did not tell us there was an accident angle to it in the beginning. But only they told there was an accident,” she said.

George P Easo, a family member said, “Politicians are changing their statements every other day. We don’t know whom to believe.”

Earlier, Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has dismissed opposition Congress charge that his son had links in connection with the recent murder of Muthoot group scion Paul M George.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Balakrishnan said, “My son (Beenish Kodiyeri) has no relation with the case whatsoever. The allegation that Beenish had connections with wanted gangsters was to create a ‘mystery’ over the case.”

Rejecting the charge that the Home Department was trying to interfere in the investigation process, he said a deliberate attempt was being made by vested interests to hamper the probe.

The government had nothing to hide in the case and was open to “any sort of investigation”, he added.

Balakrishnan also announced that a special investigation team had been constituted under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Vinson M. Paul to probe the murder of the Paul Muthoot George.

He said that the team was constituted as the inter-district ramifications of the case and deeper links would have to be probed in detail. The investigation would cover links of Muthoot George with goonda elements.

According to the police theory, a gang of nearly 22 men was behind the murder of Paul.

Paul was killed last Friday night on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. A friend who was with him was injured and is in hospital; both were stabbed.

Paul, who was based in Delhi, had recently returned to Kerala to take charge of the leisure and hospitality arm. He was returning from an under-construction resort at Mararikulam when he was stabbed to death.

On Sunday, police arrested 12 persons, including notorious criminals, identified as Om Prakash and Rajesh. (ANI)

Child labour case registered against Suchitra Krishnamoorthi

New Delhi, Aug. 25 (ANI): Following the rescue of a minor domestic help from her house, the Maharashtra Government on Tuesday filed cases against Bollywood actress Suchita Krishnamoorthy.rishnamoorthi and television star Laxmi had allegedly employed child labours.

Labour Minister Nawab Malik told media persons on Tuesday afternoon that his department got information that the two actresses were employing minor girls as maids.

“Accordingly, we have initiated necessary proceedings against the two actresses. We appeal to people to come forward and give us information about such individuals who employ child labour so we can take suitable steps in the matter,” Malik said.

Suchitra is the former wife of noted director Shekhar Kapur.

The action comes barely three days after television actress Urvashi Dhanorkar was arrested Saturday for beating, burning and confining her 10-year old maid after she caught her “eating”.

Dhanorkar was bailed out hours after her arrest. Meanwhile, the victim, Rameshwari is now in a juvenile rescue home.

The Child Labour Prevention Act, 1986, was amended October 2006 to ban employment of children under 14 as domestic servants and in dhabas, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality sectors. It makes their employment a punishable offence. (ANI)

Kerala businessman’s murder mystery solved, claims police

New Delhi, Aug. 24 (ANI): The murder case of Kerala businessman Paul Muthoot George has been solved, Kerala Police claimed on Monday.

According to the police theory, a gang of nearly 22 men was behind the murder of Paul, 30, who was heading the Muthoot M George Group’s hospitality business.

The hired man who stabbed Paul has not been arrested so far, police said

Paul was killed last Friday night on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. A friend who was with him was injured and is in hospital; both were stabbed.

On Sunday, police arrested 12 persons, including notorious criminals, identified as Om Prakash and Rajesh.

A team led by the IGP, Ernakulam Range, Vinson Paul, is interrogating the suspects.

The Muthoot Group is a major player in the financial services business in Kerala and has been slowly expanding its reach to other parts of the country. Paul is the chairman’s second son.

Earlier, media reports had suggested business rivalry could be a reason. Involvement of persons related to the narcotics trade was also not being ruled out.

The dead man and his friend were found by the roadside on Friday night. The vehicle they were travelling in was missing. The vehicle, a Ford Endeavour, was found abandoned this morning at Kollam, 40 km away.

Paul, who was based in Delhi, had recently returned to Kerala to take charge of the leisure and hospitality arm.

He was returning from an under-construction resort at Mararikulam when he was stabbed to death.

Paul was Chairman M G George Muthoot’s second son, while his two brothers, George Muthoot George and Alexander George Muthoot, are also associated with the group as executive director and as a director, respectively.

In addition, four of Paul’s cousins are part of the fourth generation of Muthoot directors, who had been inducted into the group. (ANI)

Insurance mooted to cover losses incurred by tourism sector in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 18 (ANI): The tourism sector of Jammu and Kashmir has welcomed the initiative of the state government to device an insurance scheme to those involved in tourism trade. This sector will be compensated for the losses borne by them, if any.

The tourism industry in the region was affected due to militancy and the frequent shutdown calls given by separatist factions.

The new insurance proposal seeks to underwrite the losses incurred by the hospitality industry as well as travel agents and tour operators.

“This policy will benefit everyone right from taxi drivers, pony owners and the helping hands in horse riding and all associated with this sector who deal directly with the state. This will enable the people in the tourism industry to avail this opportunity,” said Farooq Shah, Director of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir.

This is for the first time that an insurance scheme exclusively for the tourism segment has been initiated.

This proposal has been welcomed by the tourism sector.

“If the tourism season is for six months or ninety days and our business runs successfully for 45 days, then we can get our returns for the rest 45 days by the insurance company. It is a token gift from the government of Jammu and Kashmir,” Said Abdul Razzak, an owner of a Shikara. The government is trying to meet the demands of the travel and tourism trade. The private sector should come forward and invest in the tourism sector, as tourism is the gift of nature to us. Also, the tourism is the only industry which can grow and progress in this state,” said Muhammad Azim Toman, President, Houseboat Owners Association, Srinagar.

Kashmir has been among the top Asian tourism destinations though it has been suffering major slow down since out break of militancy in the region in 1989.

However, over the past couple of years, visitors have started returning to the pristine and majestic region as violence has declined after India and Pakistan started a slow-moving peace process in 2004. (ANI)

Bhutan, India work to strengthen economic ties

New Delhi, July 1 (ANI): Bhutan Prime Minister Jigme Yoser Thinley called on Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Wednesday over bilateral economic relationship.

Bhutan has liberalised its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) laws to attract Indian investors.

Bhutan has eased the norms in order to allow more than 70 per cent FDI in sectors like hydel power, information and communication technology, hospitality, agriculture and infrastructure.

Presently, Bhutan allows 100 per cent FDI in IT sector and 70 per cent in power sector.

Both India and Bhutan have agreed to develop 11,000 MW of hydel power through ten projects by 2020.

Thinley visited India last year after taking over as Bhutan’s first democratically elected Prime Minister. He, thereafter, visited New Delhi in November 2008 to participate in the second BIMSTEC Summit. (ANI)

Queen to run out of funds by 2012

London, June 30 (ANI): An annual account of the Royal Household’s expenditure has revealed that Queen will run out of funds by 2012, her Diamond Jubilee year, unless the government increases the Civil List.

The Civil List, which pays for the running of the Royal Household, has not increased in the last 20 years, and at the moment any request for an increase in funds would be difficult to tackle, as UK is suffering from the global economic crisis- the worst since the Second World War.

The newly published accounts reveal that the total cost of keeping the monarchy during the last financial year has increased by 1.5 million pounds to 41.5 million pounds, the Telegraph reports.

It also revealed that the Queen raided the reserve fund by 6 million pounds to supplement the Civil List.

A breakdown of the figures has revealed that 9.9 million pounds went on salaries, administration 1.5 million pounds, housekeeping and furnishings 700,000 pounds, ceremonial functions 400,000 pounds, 1.1 million pounds on catering and hospitality, 600,000 pounds on the garden parties which were attended by 50,000 people.

“I think that both sides will enter discussions about a new Civil List by trying to find a way forward. The ambition will be to maintain head of state expenditure at current levels in real terms which will require an increase in the Civil List,” an official from Buckingham Palace.

If the Queen continues to draw reserve funds at the current rate, she will run out of funds by the start of 2012. The reserve, which had around 35 million pounds at its peak, has now diminished to 14 million pounds. (ANI)

India is in constant touch with Australia: S M Krishna

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has said the Indian Government is in constant touch with the authorities in Australia following attacks on Indian students.

Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner to Australia, Sujata Singh, who met the Premier of the Australian state of Victoria, John Brumby, in a press conference, said that there is a “racist element in some of the attacks” but many of them were “opportunistic”.

She also stressed the need for strong steps by the Australian Government to prevent such incidents.

“It is my earnest hope that these attacks stop now. And that is precisely what we are all trying to work towards,” Singh added.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Brumby said the discussions had centered on the safety and security of Victoria’s Indian student community and further measures that may be required to ensure their experience of living, studying and working in Victoria was a successful and enjoyable experience.

Brumby said attacking any individual is abhorrent to the values and principles that made Victoria among the world’s most successful multicultural communities.

Indian student beatings on the rise in Australia, says community leader

Sydney, May 29 (ANI): The Indian Government has been forced to take steps to assure the safety of Indian students in Australia after a series of attacks on them, a community leader has said.

Dr. Yadu Singh said there had been at least 20 bashings of Indian students in Sydney in the last month alone, but most went unreported out of fear. He estimated over 100 attacks on Indian students in the last 12 months.

“There’s a name for this … ‘curry bashing’, ‘lets go curry bashing’. They are not random at all and the people are targeting them. They know these students are easy targets,” he said.

The revelations follow a strong response by the Indian Government to an apparently racially motivated attack on four Indian students in Melbourne, which left one student fighting for his life in hospital.

Under instructions from the Indian Government, the Indian Consulate in Sydney has formed a committee to address the concerns about the welfare of Indian students in Australia, said Dr Singh, who is the head of the committee.

“Melbourne has a bigger problem but if we don’t do something in Sydney it will be repeated here,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Dr Singh, as saying.

He said he was aware of numerous robbing and random bashings on Indian students at night and in daylight, on trains and near their homes, often in western Sydney.

On Sunday evening, hospitality graduate Rajesh Kumar received burns to 30 per cent of his body when a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of the Harris Park home he shared with other Indians.

Dr. Singh said the attacks had been happening for about four years, and were a mixture of opportunistic robberies and outright racists attacks.

Many students were also afraid that lodging any sort of formal police report would harm their chances at permanent residency.

“So they will suffer the humiliation and the insult … and the criminals think:

We are pretty safe robbing them and nothing will happen,” Dr. Singh said. (ANI)
