UPDATE 2-India’s Reliance Natural plunges after share swap deal

MUMBAI, July 5 (Reuters) – India’s Reliance Natural (RENR.BO) shed more than a quarter of its value on Monday, after a deal to fold into sister firm Reliance Power (RPOL.BO) valued the company at $1.5 billion, or 31 percent below its Friday closing price.

The companies, both controlled by Indian billionaire Anil Ambani, said on Sunday Reliance Natural Resources (RNRL) shareholders would receive one Reliance Power share for every four they hold. [ID:nSGE663015]

Reliance Natural lost a May ruling by India’s highest court in a gas supply dispute with Reliance Industries (RELI.BO), controlled by Anil’s elder brother, Mukesh Ambani, the world’s fourth-richest man.

Analysts say there was no reason for Reliance Natural to exist independently following the court’s verdict as it would not receive gas at a cheaper rate than the government-approved price.

“The merger was a given, it was just a matter of time,” said Sonam Udasi, head of research at IDBI Capital.

“RNRL was just a shell company, and after the court verdict, it couldn’t have sold gas at a lower price, so it had to be absorbed,” he said.

Based on Friday’s closing price of Reliance Power and the number of outstanding shares of Reliance Natural, the deal values Reliance Natural at about $1.5 billion, or about 43.80 rupees a share, compared with its closing price of 63.65 rupees on Friday, according to Reuters calculations.

By 0609 GMT, shares in Reliance Natural were down 27.3 percent at 46.25 rupees, after falling to 45.50, their lowest since May 21. Reliance Power was up 2.5 percent at 179.60 rupees, after climbing to 189.80, its highest in more than a year.

About 5.6 million shares were traded in Reliance Power, more than double the stock’s average trading volume over the past 30 days. About 10.9 million shares of Reliance Natural were traded versus with their 30-day average trading volume of 12.9 million.

Reliance Natural had wanted Reliance Industries to honour a private deal between the brothers, struck when the Reliance empire was split, to supply it with 28 million standard cubic metres of gas for 17 years at $2.34, about half the government-set price.

India’s Supreme Court ordered the companies to renegotiate the agreement at the government-approved price.

Late last month, Reliance Natural and Reliance Industries said they signed a revised gas supply agreement, but did not disclose details. [ID:nSGE65O09O]

The gas is critical for Anil Ambani’s power business, including projects being built by Reliance Power. Reliance Power went public in early 2008 in a $2.9 billion IPO — India’s biggest — but has never risen above its issue price.

“RNRL’s share in CBM (coal-bed methane) blocks, and proposed coal supply logistics and shipping business plans, are still nascent and will not contribute materially to earnings of the merged entity in the medium term,” JPMorgan analysts said in a note. The merger would dilute earnings at Reliance Power, the note said.

Reliance Industries operates the country’s biggest gas find, in the D6 block of the Krishna Godavari basin off India’s east coast. The government determines who gets the gas from the field and at what price. (Additional reporting by Ami Shah and Sumeet Chatterjee; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)

Major changes ahead in Malaysian Indian Congress

Kajang (Selangor), June 6 (IANS) The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) will undergo ‘major changes in the next six months’, its chief S. Samy Vellu announced here Sunday.

He would overhaul the party machinery, including at the state level, before stepping down in the third quarter of next year, Vellu said at the opening of the 64th Selangor MIC Convention here.

MIC, Malaysia’s oldest party of the 1.7 million ethnic Indians, is a key constituent of the ruling alliance Barisan Nasional (BN) headed by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

‘Every leader has to prove the worthiness of his or her leadership. If we fail to do that due to our own negligence, then we are only failing our community. We will lose our right to represent our community,’ Vellu was quoted as saying by Bernama, the official news agency.

‘There must be a complete overhaul of our party machinery. If we are weak and fight among each other, then other Barisan Nasional component parties will not respect us. We will not have any honour and will lose our dignity,’ he added.

Vellu has said he is working to rejuvenate the MIC in tandem with Razak in time for the March 2012 general election.

Mirwaiz proposes, Omar doubts

Srinagar, June 5 — What might have been a positive step by the Hurriyat on the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir has been somewhat offset by a note of disquiet expressed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Jammu and Kashmir separatist outfit All Parties Hurriyat Conference (moderate) said on Saturday the group had never ruled out dialogue with the Centre on what the constitutional status of the state should be.And, just two days ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to the state on Monday, Abdullah expressed doubts on Saturday on the genuineness of encounters reported from the line of control. The context of Abdullah’s statement is the three killings in the fake encounter in Machil, 65 km north of Srinagar, by the Army. “The Jammu and Kashmir police have been flooded with complaints questioning the genuineness of encounters, all of which are being reinvestigated,” Abdullah said. The statement has come just days after three families from Nadihaal in north Kashmir said the boys the Army called militants were their relatives and not terrorists. Abdullah criticised the lack of transparency in the Army, stressing that “they act as the judge, the jury and the executioner in the state”. In an exclusive interview on Saturday, Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said: “The Hurriyat never closed its doors to dialogue, but the dialogue needs some substance and sustainability.”

“It is for the Prime Minister to repeal draconian laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and also address the issue of human rights with commitment to honour them.” the Mirwaiz said.

Chandigarh, Jun 6 (PTI) The Queen”s Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games will arrive in the city next month but legendary runner, “Flying Sikh” Milkha Singh may give the ceremony a miss. The 81-year-old Milkha is off to the United States for a month along with wife to see their golfer-son Jeev in action there and he is yet to decide whether to fly back to attend the ceremony.

“I am leaving for New York tonight. I would love to be back in Chandigarh when the CWG baton reaches here, but at this moment I cannot say that for sure,” Milkha told PTI. Milkha had won the 400m gold with a timing of 47.6 second in the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games.

Chandigarh is gearing up to welcome various national and international sportspersons as well as spectators and tourists from different places when the baton arrives here on July 3. “Earlier, I had said yes to Chandigarh administration when they asked me if I was going to be available on July 3.

Now, once I reach the United States, I will take a call and hope that I am able to be here for the event,” Milkha said. The Commonwealth Games will be held from October 3-14 in Delhi.

Milkha also hoped that the Indian athletes will capitalise on the home support and come out with flying colours in the forthcoming quadrennial event. “Just have the will power and you can do it.

We are the host nation and it is the question of our honour and I am sure our sportspersons will keep our flag flying high,” he said.

Couple stoned to death in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, May 27 (IANS) A couple, who had eloped and married, was stoned to death in what appears to be a case of honour killing in Andhra Pradesh’s Nizamabad district.

Irate residents of Krishnajivadi village rained stones on the couple after tying them to a pole, police said Thursday.

The macabre incident occurred late Wednesday night in Telangana region, about 250 km from here.

Sunkara Srinivas, 32, belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), and 22-year-old Swapna Reddy, belonging to an upper caste, had eloped and married six months ago.

Swapna’s family was against the alliance as Srinivas was from a lower caste and already married. He had two children from his first wife.

The newly married couple lived in Hyderabad for sometime as Srinivas was working as a computer operator in a private firm.

They returned to the village three days ago. Swapna’s relatives called the couple on the pretext of discussing some issues. Following an argument, they started thrashing Srinivas and when Swapna tried to protect him, they attacked her as well.

The couple was then tied to a pole and the attackers, numbering about 30, pelted stones on them leading to their death.

Police has registered a case and arrested three people.

Meryl Streep gets college honour

London, May 19 (ANI): Meryl Streep received a top award from New York”s Barnard College at a ceremony on Monday.

The Mamma Mia! star was honoured with the Barnard Medal of Distinction, and she made a heartfelt speech in front of the other graduates.

“Barnard women have advantage and need to look forward to speeding progress in areas of suffering. There is only change, resistance to it, then more change,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling the crowd.

“(Film) Awards have little bearing on my own personal wellbeing and happiness. Being here has helped me dig deep to find something to offer you. And you don”t have to do anything except to make your parents proud. And you already have,” she added. (ANI)

Dream victory at Monaco greatest day of my life: Webber

Melbourne, May 18 (ANI): Red Bull driver Mark Webber has said that winning the Monaco Grand Prix was the best day in his life as he had dreamt of a top podium finish in the world’s ‘toughest’ race since childhood.

“It was the best day of my life. I’ve dreamt of winning the Monaco Grand Prix since I was a boy and to do it from pole position was just awesome.

“It’s an honour for me to join the list of winners for this race, which hadn’t been won by an Australian since Jack Brabham in 1959,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Webber, as saying.

“Qualifying and the race were pretty near perfect for me. The RB6 was fantastic to drive and I executed some tidy laps to take pole position from Robert Kubica on Saturday afternoon,” he said.

Webber said he expected a real challenge from Kubica, but was relieved to see Sebastian Vettel get the jump on him at the start.

“It gave me a buffer to the Renault driver, while also setting us up for Red Bull Racing’s second one-two of the season. My start wasn’t actually that great, but the run to the first corner was short and no one was able to get ahead.

“It’s very difficult to pass at Monaco and when I emerged from the first corner in the lead, I knew that the race was mine to lose,” Webber said. (ANI)

Gordon Brown’s chances of knighthood ruined?

London, May 16 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown may miss a chance to earn knighthood after his recent statement following his exit from the top post.

The ex-leader said he “loved the job” of prime minister, “not for its prestige, its titles and its ceremony.”

However, the speech has put officials, who were planning to make Brown a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, at Buckingham Palace in a fix, as the felicitation apparently would be an “insult” to the former Labour leader with such an honour.

“Brown may well come round to the idea. Other Labour prime ministers, such as Harold Wilson, couldn””t wait for an honour,” the Telegraph quoted Hugo Vickers, the author of Royal Orders, as saying.

Even though there is a vacancy in the Order of the Garter, Vickers feels Brown will be offered the Thistle.

He added: “If you are Scottish, it is in some ways more prestigious. Unfortunately, there are no vacancies for the Thistle at the moment, but the Queen doesn””t like to rush these things.”

Meanwhile, Brown has said he will continue as the MP for Kirkcaldy. (ANI)

INTREVIEW – Philippines’ Marcos fights to get wealth back

Former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, who won a seat in the lower house of Congress in this week’s elections, said on Thursday she was confident of winning back much of the wealth seized from her family.

Marcos, known for her large collection of jewellery and 1,200 pairs of shoes, said she would not accept a compromise deal but would pursue her claims through the courts.

“I am sure that the things that are ours and truly ours will come back,” the 80-year-old told Reuters by phone from the northern Ilocos Norte province. “Truth and justice sometimes grind exceedingly slow, but grind exceedingly well.”

Imelda’s late husband Ferdinand was president for nearly two decades, ruling with an iron fist before he was ousted in an army-backed popular uprising in 1986. He was accused of amassing more than $10 billion while in office.

His successor, democracy icon Corazon “Cory” Aquino set up a search and recover agency which seized more than $5 billion worth of Marcos’ alleged ill-gotten assets. The government also offered deals to the Marcoses to settle litigation over some of the remaining wealth.

“Marcos was not a thief,” said Imelda, who is returning to Congress after serving one term in 1995-1998.

“I never wanted any compromise agreement. There will be no compromise because truth, honour and justice are non-negotiable,” she said. “The truth will set us free because we are on the side of the truth and of God. And, if you are on the side of truth and God, nobody can touch you.”

Imelda said she decided to run for public office because she does not want to enter into any compromise with government on the allegedly ill-gotten wealth and on the family’s demand for a hero’s burial for the deposed dictator.

“The number one role and responsibility of government is justice,” she said. “Even in the case of the Marcoses, there is no justice. Even the dead Marcos is still waiting for an honourable burial. I think it’s about time they do the right thing.”

Imelda’s eldest daughter, Imee, also won the Ilocos Norte governorship, and her only son, Ferdinand Jr, is likely to win a seat in the upper house of Congress.

Powerful clans continue to play a key role in politics in the Philippines. Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, who is set to succeed President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, belongs to a political family that has ruled the northern Tarlac province for decades.

Imelda said she would pray for Aquino’s success “for the sake of the Filipino people”.

“You need a real expert there who has done a lot of public service,” she said. “I’ll also pray harder that he succeeds in his campaign of eliminating corruption because then, truth will come out and we’ll be vindicated.”

Pak origin acid ‘honour’ attacker jailed for 30 years in UK

London, May 12 (ANI): A court here has jailed a sadistic Brit Muslim for 30 years for trying to pour acid down the throat of his married sister””s lover.

Mohammed Vakas, 26, carried out the attack to protect the family””s “honour”.

It left Awais Akram, 24, horribly disfigured.

Mohammed Adeel, 20, the woman””s cousin, and Fabion Kuci, 17, got 14 years and eight years for the revenge plot.

The victim was lured from his flat before the masked gang pounced. He survived by covering his mouth with his hand. But he was left looking like “a zombie from a horror film” after the acid caused 47 per cent burns to his skin. (ANI)

US carefully reviewing China plan to build N-plants in Pak

The United States has said that it is carefully reviewing the Chinese decision to build two nuclear power plants in Pakistan and asked the atomic power countries to honour their non-proliferation commitments.

“I think this is something that is still under discussion among all of us. Obviously it’s important from our perspective that all countries live up to their commitments,” US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said at the Brookings Institute – a Washington-based think tank.

Despite reservations from the members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the China Nuclear Corporation has agreed to finance two additional civilian reactors in Pakistan.

“The Chinese have argued that it’s grandfathered. This is something that we haven’t I think reached a final conclusion on. But it’s something we’re obviously looking at very carefully,” Steinberg said in response to a question.

“I think it’s important to scrupulously honour these nonproliferation commitments. So we’ll want to continue to engage on the question, about whether this is permitted under the understandings of the IAEA,” Steinberg said.

The top State Department official said the United States has intensified its discussion with China on its role in South Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan in particular.

While Special US Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke has been to Beijing several times, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake held US-China Strategic Sub-Dialogue on South Asia early this month.

“We have had an intensified conversation with China on these issues. Ambassador Holbrooke has been to Beijing several times. We’ve had conversations both in Beijing and elsewhere. The Chinese have participated in a number of the multilateral

meetings involving Afghanistan. And I think our objectives are largely coincident in Afghanistan,” he said.

“I think we all seek a stable Afghanistan that’s has an inclusive government that’s responsive to its people; and a particular concern to both of us, that it does not harbour violent extremists that can pose a threat to the United States, Afghanistan’s neighbours and the international community as a whole. So I think that the basic framework within which we approach these things does have a shared set of interests,” Steinberg said.

Welcoming Chinese economic investment in Afghanistan, the US official said creating jobs and economic opportunity is part of a long-term strategy for creating a stable Afghanistan, creating alternatives to illicit production of narcotics and other sources of income for the Afghan people.

Sir Ridley Scott”s Robin Hood, starring Crowe and Cate Blanchett, will open this year”s Cannes Film Festival.

“The release of the film Robin Hood this month is of global interest and we thought it would be very fitting to pay tribute to this great actor by producing the Robin Hood stamp pack,” BBC quoted a spokesman for Australia Post as saying. (ANI)

Woods admits to being at the lowest ebb in golf career

Ponte Vedra (Florida, US), May 5 (ANI): Golfer Tiger Woods has admitted that emotionally he was at his lowest ebb in 14 years as a professional and that his inner turmoil had followed him on to the golf course.

Woods looked bad at the Quail Hollow Championship last week, a shell of his former self. And, he looked bad again yesterday.

In practice yesterday, Woods found water on five holes on the back nine and duck hooked his drive into the drink at the 18th.

“It’s getting better, [although] it couldn’t get any worse,” a subdued and demoralised Woods said, before joking that the one thing he did well last week was put the ball on the tee peg. “I didn’t have any balls fall off tees. It just got worse from there.”

Some are questioning the relationship Woods has with Hank Haney, his coach.

Woods has not given him a ringing endorsement other than to say that he is still working with him.

For the first time since 1996, Woods will not be going into a tournament as outright favourite. This time, he shares that honour with Phil Mickelson.

Woods looks exposed and vulnerable, words not normally associated with a player many regard as the best there has ever been. (ANI)

Valencia’s Silva says it would be hard to resist Man U offer

London, May 5 (ANI): Valencia winger David Silva has said it would be hard to resist an offer of a move to Manchester United.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been keeping tabs on the Spanish player ever since their Euro 2008 triumph.

“When you hear a club like Manchester United is interested in you, it is an honour,” the Daily Express quoted Silva, as saying.

“I am very aware of the Premier League, and in recent years it has been the stand-out league in the world. If it came calling, especially if it was a club like Manchester United, it would be very hard to resist.

“I am happy at Valencia, but every player has his price, and if they get an offer, they think is good business anything is possible,” Silva said. (ANI)

Jharkhand Police detains woman scribe’s parents

Koderma (Jharkhand), May 3 (ANI): Jharkhand Police on Monday detained the parents of a woman journalist, who was found dead near here, for interrogation.

“We have taken the parents of Nirupama Pathak, who was attached with a English daily from New Delhi, for interrogation in connection with her murder,” said Koderma Superintendent of Police Kranti Singh said.

However, Singh refused to comment whether Pathak’s case was an honour killing.

He said the investigation was still on and it would reveal the intention behind the killing.

Police said they would investigate the role of other family members and friends in the killing.

On April 29, Pathak was found dead at her home in Koderma, her family said she had been found hanging.

The mysterious death of the journalist turned out to be a case of murder in the post-mortem report released on Sunday.

The report also confirmed that a ligature mark was formed around her neck as she was strangulated with a rope after she died. (ANI)

NBA – King James celebrates coronation by sinking Celtics

LeBron James celebrated his second consecutive MVP award with a 35 point haul to fire the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 101-93 victory over the Boston Celtics in their Eastern Conference semi-final series opener on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, James confirmed that he had won the NBA’s top honour and he did not allow a sprained right elbow to slow him down as he helped the conference’s top seed overcome an 11-point third quarter deficit.

The Cleveland forward wrapped up the win with a three-pointer with 22 seconds to play.

“If I’m on the court, I have to be productive,” James told reporters when asked about the elbow “No excuses.”

Guard Mo Williams added 20 points for the Cavaliers, while Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 27 points and 12 assists.

Williams delivered his first-ever dunk as a Cavalier in the third quarter to help swing the momentum back to the home side, who host Game Two in the best-of-seven series on Monday.

“It was a big play,” Williams said. “My intention was to shoot a floater or a layup.

“I realised I was a little high so I thought I might try it. It turned out pretty good.”

He had 14 points in a productive third quarter as Cleveland fought to get back in the game.

“They came out swinging and then I think we just shied away and stopped doing what we were doing,” Rondo said.

“We stopped being aggressive, not just offensively but defensively as well. We stopped our pressure. They started attacking us, and we fell back on our heels.”

The Celtics point guard had only one field goal in the second half and got little help from his team mates.

Paul Pierce had just 13 points and turned the ball over four times and shooting guard Ray Allen was held to 14.

Kevin Garnett fared better, however, backing up Rondo with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
