Jimenez wins season-best 14th as Rockies beat Padres

(Reuters) – Ace pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez recorded his Major League-leading 14th win of the season despite bleeding four runs from his final inning in the Colorado Rockies’ 10-6 win over the NL West-leading San Diego Padres on Monday.

Jimenez (14-1), who struggled in his previous start against the Boston Red Sox last week, tossed five scoreless innings before getting punished in the sixth.

The Rockies had long established an 8-0 lead for their starter, however, led by Miguel Olivo who hit a two-run double in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth.

San Diego outfielder Scott Hairston recorded four RBIs and pulled the home side within 8-6 with a run-scoring double in the seventh, but Colorado added two insurance runs in the ninth before reliever Huston Street took the final three outs.

Simpsons fan splashes 150k pounds on 30,000 pieces of memorabilia!

London, June 27 (ANI): A Simpsons fan has shelled out 150, 000 pounds on a massive collection based on the popular cartoon family.

Glynne Williams spent the staggering amount on 30,000 pieces of memorabilia, including themed crockery and life-size models of Homer and wife Marge.

The 42-year-old further boasts of having a 200-pound arcade game based on the cartoon and splashes another 150 pounds per month on trinkets.

And now the Bristol courier hopes to turn his loft into a museum.

“I’ve watched every episode ever made. Whenever we go on holiday I pick something up. I think people would like to look at this stuff,” The Sun quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Even Homer Simpson is Susan Boyle’s fan

London, May 21 (ANI): Susan Boyle became a worldwide sensation after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent and now her global fame has reached a new level with a mention on The Simpsons.

Although she will not appear as a character – an accolade granted only to former Prime Minister Tony Blair and international superstars like Michael Jackson, Ringo Starr, Elton John and Paul McCartney – she is to be namechecked by family patriarch Homer during the show’s 20th anniversary season.

In the episode, titled Springfield’s Got Talent, Homer admits he is a fan of Susan, reports the Scotsman.

He is seen sitting in front of judge Simon Cowell at auditions for the talent show.

Asked to identify himself, Homer replies: “My name is Homer Simpson, I’m 39 years old and, well, I’ve never been kissed. My dream is to be a great singer like Susan Boyle.” (ANI)

Plant used to make condemned men to smile before death came from Italian island

Rome, May 16 (ANI): Scientists have traced the roots of a potion that was used to intoxicate condemned men to smile before dying, to a plant commonly found on the Italian island of Sardinia, during the time of Greek poet Homer.

According to Roman news agency ANSA, the association with Sardinia has often been disputed, but Cagliari University botanists think they have settled the case, and the plant in question could have beneficial properties as well.

The plant, tubular water-dropwart (oenanthe fistulosa), is common in Sardinia, where it is popularly known as ‘water celery’.

“Our discovery supports what many cultural anthropologists have said about death rituals among the ancient Sardinians,” said Cagliari University Botany Department chief Mauro Ballero.

“‘The Punics were convinced that death was the start of new life, to be greeted with a smile,” he added.

Ballero’s team, whose work appears in the latest edition of the US Journal of Natural Products, have established that a toxic substance in the dropwart plant does, in fact, cause facial muscles to contract and produce a grimace or rictus.

According to Ballero, the discovery could have a brighter side, leading to drugs that might help certain conditions where parts of the face are paralyzed.

“The good news is that the molecule in this plant may be retooled by pharmaceutical companies to have the opposite effect,” he said. (ANI)

Simpsons memorabilia collecting fan runs out of place at home

London, May 7 (ANI): A Simpsons fan, who has been collecting their memorabilia, has run out of space at her home.

Catherine Murphy, 29, of Leamington Spa, Warwicks, is so obsessed with the cartoon characters that she has collected more than 400 items, including toy figurines, alarm clocks, calendars and a robotic Homer.

“Over the years I’ve amassed quite a collection,” the Sun quoted the mum of one as saying.

“To be honest the only place in my house big enough to stash it all is in the attic,” she added.

Murphy, a bar manager, fell for the show at the age of 16.

She has even flown to the US to visit the Fox network, which makes the hit.

“I started watching it when I was a schoolgirl and now I’m a 29-year-old mum I still find it hysterical. My favourite character would have to be Homer,” she added. (ANI)

Dog eats Homer Simpson!

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Dixie, a ten-year-old collie-dalmatian pet dog, is said to have become ill after eating a plastic Homer Simpson toy.

When X-rays were taken, a very clear image of the TV star could be seen in the dog’s intestine.

The owner, Victoria Keir, 42, of Aberdeen suspects the dog must have eaten a chocolate Kinder Surprise egg with a plastic toy Homer inside.

“Dixie must have seen it on the table and gulped it down – she loves chocolate,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“She became very ill,” she said.

Dixie, ten, is recovering following surgery to remove the toy at the PDSA’s hospital in the city.

“It is an unusual case,” surgeon Alison Hamel said. (ANI)

Doughnuts, burgers, crisps labelled ‘healthy’ under European guidelines!

London, Apr 25 (ANI): Doughnuts, burgers and crisps would now be advertised as “healthy food” under new European guidelines.

The sugary treats like doughnuts favoured by Homer Simpson has passed the European Commission’s new test for being nutritious.

The other snacks, which can now be advertised as healthy, include sausage rolls, custard tarts and even Burger King Whoppers.

Despite the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) a strict limit on the amount of sugars, fats and salt, EC’s Health Claims Regulation has set the threshold much higher.

According to a report by Oxford University, a Tesco jam doughnut contains 200mg of sodium, 18g of sugar and 5.7g of saturated fat per 100g.

It would easily meet the EC’s health threshold for bakery food of 500mg sodium, 25g sugar and 8g saturated fat.

“Labelling must help people make healthier choices and we would oppose any moves that might encourage consumers to eat more fatty, sugary and salty foods,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesman for the FSA as saying.

Colin Walker, of consumer watchdog Which?, said: “Jam doughnuts and crisps being allowed to make nutrition claims would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious.” (ANI)

Final game of Cubs-Cards series rained off

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Sunday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals was postponed because of poor weather and will be played as part of a day-night double-header on July 12.

The final game in a series of four was called off before a pitch could be thrown following steady rain in cold conditions and a dismal forecast for the evening.

“The weather’s terrible and, looking at the radar, there’s no end in sight,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella told Chicago’s website (www.chicago.cubs.mlb.com).

“Early in the season with the cold weather and wet fields, you can get some injuries. That’s my biggest concern. No question, our bullpen could use a break.”

Both teams were scheduled to have Monday off but were keen not to play then given another poor weather forecast followed by the start of a 20-game stretch on Tuesday.

The Cubs led the four-game series 2-1, Aramis Ramirez having hit a game-winning two-run homer in the 11th inning on Saturday for the home team.

Yankees’ Burnett pitches six hitless innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) – A.J. Burnett pitched six innings without giving up a hit before his offense broke open a close game in the New York Yankees’ 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Burnett (2-0), who joined the Yankees as a free agent from Toronto, kept the American League champions scoreless until the seventh when the Rays had three consecutive singles to score their two runs. The right-hander struck out nine and walked one.

“He was pretty solid for eight innings,” Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria, who was struck out twice by Burnett, told reporters. “It’s tough as a hitter to give in and tip your hat to a guy, but give credit where credit is due.”

New York’s Mark Teixeira broke the 2-2 deadlock with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the eighth before the Yankees scored four runs in the ninth, with Derek Jeter hitting a two-out three-run homer.

Nick Swisher also homered for the Yankees, who lost to the Rays 15-5 on Monday.

Tampa Bay did not have a hit until Carl Crawford led off the seventh with the first of three consecutive singles. Carlos Pena, with the third single, made it a 2-1 game and Pat Burrell followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score.

Burnett, who pitched a no-hitter in 2001, admitted he had been hoping for another.

“Everybody was thinking about it, even me,” Burnett said.

“I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t. I was putting the ball where I wanted to. It definitely could have happened, but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Brett Gardner, whose ground-rule double provided the Yankees’ first run in the fourth, and Jeter both went 3-for-5.

J.P Howell (0-1), who pitched the eighth for Tampa Bay, was given the loss. Starter Matt Garza allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

Bay’s two home runs help Red Sox beat Angels

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Jason Bay smashed two home runs to help the Boston Red Sox hold off the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 Saturday.

Bay put the Red Sox ahead to stay at 4-3 with a two-run homer in the seventh, then hit a solo-shot in the ninth.

“Thankfully, we get the tack-on run or we’re probably still playing,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters.

Los Angeles pulled within 5-4 on Torii Hunter’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded when Howie Kendrick flied out to right to end the game.

Mike Lowell also hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who ended a three-game losing streak.

The game was the second for the Angels since the death of pitcher Nick Adenhart in a car crash on Thursday. The Angels beat the Red Sox 6-3 on Friday following a tribute to Adenhart.

Mike Napoli hit two solo home runs for the Angels in the third and fifth innings. Their other run came from on a ground out in the first.

Brad Penny, making his American League debut, was credited with the win. The former Dodgers pitcher went six innings, giving up five hits and three runs. He struck out two and walked two.

Standout closer Jonathan Papelbon earned the save despite struggling in the ninth.

Papelbon gave up a double to Kendry Morales after the home run to Hunter and walked Napolis with one out.

Erick Aybar struck out before Chone Figgins walked to load the bases. Kendrick then hit seven foul balls on an 0-2 count before flying out.

“After the fifth or sixth or seventh one, I was kind of giggling out there,” Papelbon said. “It was kind of one of those moments where you’re like, ‘Man, how many more foul balls is this guy going to hit?’ It was dramatic and fun and intense.”

Joe Saunders took the loss, pitching seven innings. He gave up seven hits and four runs, including Bay’s two-run homer.

“I was kicking myself after that pitch,” Saunders said. “I failed to execute that one pitch, and I think that was the difference in the game.”

Marge Simpson caught enjoying ‘Homer-sexual’ lip-lock

London, Mar 3 (ANI): Marge Simpson, who’s known for her conservative style and nagging her husband Homer in the popular animation The Simpsons, has become the latest TV character to enjoy a lesbian affair.

In a recent episode of the hit series, the blue-haired wife was kissing an attractive female friend on the lips. The action took place in the Simpson’s living room, in Springfield, as her husband Homer looked on.

But for those wondering if Marge’s sexual inclining might have taken a 180-degree turn, you’ll be disappointed – the entire scenario was a fantasy constructed in Homer’s mind, reports The Telegraph.

In 2005, Marge’s older sister Patty came out of the closet, and got engaged to a female golf player called Veronica.

It later turned out, Veronica was, in fact, a man who was dressed in drag so he could compete on the Ladies Professional Golfing Association tour and was promptly dumped by Patty when she found out. (ANI)

‘The Simpsons’ set to become longest-running TV series

New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): American animated sitcom ‘The Simpsons’ is all set to break the record of the longest-running television series ‘Gunsmoke’ because Fox network has ordered two more seasons of the series.

The Simpsons started in 1989 and its 21st season will start in the fall, after it tied the longevity record of Gunsmoke, which ended in 1975 after 20 seasons, reports the China Daily.

The sitcom, which has won 24 Emmy Awards, and was already the longest running animated series on prime-time television in the United States, has its second season in the two-year deal set for in 2010.

The Simpsons, created by cartoon artist Matt Groening, are a family of five made up of dull-witted father Homer, good-intentioned mom Marge and kids Bart and Lisa and Maggie, who all live in a town called Springfield that serves as a microcosm of the United States.

The show has featured many celebrities for its voice over, from Paul McCartney to Elizabeth Taylor, and it deals with weighty issues in a comedic sense, including racial discrimination, world affairs and religion.

When The Simpsons Movie was released in 2007, it ended up making 527 million dollars worldwide. (ANI)
