Fire leaves thousands homeless in Philippine capital

Manila, May 15 (DPA) Thousands of people were left homeless Saturday in a pre-dawn blaze that struck a slum area in the Philippine capital. No one was injured, a fire official said.

The fire razed some 800 houses in Muntinlupa City, leaving at least 4,000 people homeless, according to metropolitan Manila fire chief Senior Superintendent Pablito Cordeta.

Cordeta said there were no reported injuries in the conflagration that lasted for several hours.

Investigators were still determining the cause.

Computer glitches leave taxpayers on struggle street

Glitches in the Australian Tax Office’s (ATO) new multi-million-dollar computer system have resulted in lengthy delays processing about 1 million tax assessments.

Since the system was introduced in January, thousands of taxpayers have waited weeks longer than normal for a refund, with some waiting more than four months.

Many taxpayers were told their refunds had been sent when in fact they had not.

The ABC has been given an internal ATO document that confirms hundreds of people have been calling the office about the protracted delays.

Some of the callers say they are at risk of being made homeless and some have cancelled surgery because they have been relying on refunds.

The ATO has updated its website at regular intervals, claiming the problems were being addressed and the backlog was rapidly diminishing.

But head of tax and superannuation for Taxpayers Australia, Roger Timms, says it is premature to say the ATO is on top of the problem.

“We receive a lot of feedback into our offices that would indicate there are a lot of aggrieved taxpayers and tax agents out there who would think that the problem is far from being solved,” he said.

“Now the Tax Office in one of their publications indicated that they were conscious of hardship issues and they said we’ve assisted – I think the figure was 1,000 or so people with hardship issues. Now if they’d assisted 1,000, the question is how many others are out there who haven’t been assisted?”

An internal ATO document issued on April 7 confirms that complaints to the Tax Office remain high, with 346 calls made over a three-day period.

It says tax agents and taxpayers are reporting cash flow problems due to the delays in issuing refunds.

The document contains the stories of two people desperately waiting on refunds to pay their mortgage and medical bills.

“I have been waiting for my return, I guess like everyone else, since January,” one statement from a taxpayer reads.

“I am now literally on hardship. I don’t have any money. I needed to borrow money to eat over the Easter weekend and by the end of this week I will be homeless.”

Another says: “I have organised surgeons, hospitals and needed to cancel because of you guys. How long is this going to take to fix? Are you going to give me another 14 days?

“They told me it would be done by the 30th and that was yesterday. My daughter has an illness which needs to be fixed.”

The leaked document says 71 per cent of tax agents who phoned the ATO had expressed confusion, frustration and anger.

It goes on to say their tolerance level has decreased and they remain sceptical about ATO advice and that the scepticism might have long-term consequences for the Tax Office.

One agent says they have had 150 fewer refund payments put into their trust account over a three-month period this year compared with the same time last year.

Inquiry calls

With the end of the financial year looming Mr Timms wants an inquiry into what went wrong.

“Part of the problem is that the Tax Office through this period of implementation have fairly consistently said that things are on track,” he said.

“Now I think this has caused considerable frustration with tax agents who have clients who would say ‘well, things aren’t on track’ and each time we get an on-track message from the Tax Office, it sort of is followed up a week or so later by one that indicates, ‘well, look there are some on-going problems, but we won’t go into too much detail but we’re on top of it’.

“And that sort of pattern of behaviour, if you like, has been repeated pretty much throughout March, and so agents really feel that they’re not getting a true reflection of the position inside the Tax Office.”

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon agrees. He says the tax document contradicts statements the office has previously given publicly.

“This document puts lie to what the Tax Office has said to the Australian public over the past few months about this system,” he said.

“This requires nothing short of an independent investigation by the Inspector General of Taxation and by the Commonwealth Auditor General, because we need to get to the bottom of this.

“The danger is that unless this is sorted out by tax time, it will turn into absolute chaos when it comes to millions of returns being processed.”

Senator Xenophon says the situation is nothing short of a debacle.

“When you consider that taxpayers are becoming desperate, they’re under mortgage stress because their returns aren’t being processed, when one person had to cancel a child’s surgery because they didn’t get their refund cheque, then you know there is something seriously wrong with this new IT system,” he said.

At the time of PM going to air, the ATO still had not responded to the claims.

Rains kill at least 95 in Rio, paralyze city

Landslides and floods set off by the heaviest rains in decades killed at least 95 people in Rio de Janeiro state, making hundreds homeless, flooding roads and paralyzing Brazil’s second city on Tuesday.

Mudslides swept away shacks in Rio’s hillside slums, turning the city’s main lake and the sea brown during the heavy rains that started on Monday and continued to fall through most of Tuesday.

Most victims died in more than 180 mudslides, authorities said. Rio’s fire service said at least 40 injured people were taken to hospitals as the search went on for others reported missing, and that the death toll was certain to rise.

Mayor Eduardo Paes warned residents to stay away from risky hillside areas and said public schools would stay closed for a second day on Wednesday as more heavy rain was forecast through the night.

Officials said 39 people died in metropolitan Rio, famous for its Carnival and beaches, and 41 were killed in Niteroi, the city on the other side of Rio’s Guanabara Bay. The fire service said a total of 95 people were killed across the state.

The mayor said 1,200 people had been made homeless and that 10,000 houses remained at risk, mostly in the slums where about a fifth of Rio’s people live, often in precarious shacks that are highly vulnerable to heavy rains.

Morning flights in and out of the city of 6 million people — which will host the 2014 soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics — were canceled or seriously delayed and many neighborhoods were cut off from power and transport.

Many companies shut down their offices for the day as torrents of water snarled traffic.

Joabes Araujo da Silva, a 21-year-old telemarketer, told Brazil’s Globo news the mudslide swept away his house in the Buraco Quente neighborhood.

“I only got out of the house, which was full of mud, when my dad pushed the door open. We couldn’t get out the window. It was the scariest thing when I saw the house I’ve lived in for 20 years fall,” he said.

SLUMS BEAR BRUNT

The downpour, which began late on Monday, is the worst Rio has recorded in at least 30 years.

In less than 24 hours, Paes said, 9 inches (28.8 cm) of rain fell on the city — more than what meteorologists said was expected for all of April. After a break, heavy rains began again in mid-afternoon, raising fears of more mudslides.

The latest flooding and transportation chaos will renew attention on Rio’s poor infrastructure as it prepares to host the World Cup and the Olympics.

The Southern Hemisphere summer has been particularly hot and rainy in Rio this year.

In January, at least 76 people died in flooding and mudslides in Brazil’s most populous states of Rio, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. Then, dozens of people were killed in a landslide at a beach resort between Rio and the port city of Santos.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled an event on Tuesday where he was due to inaugurate public works projects.

“No one could cope with the rain that we are seeing, which is the worst in Rio’s history,” Lula said.

Globo showed images of houses that slid down a ravine, crumbling to pieces under the mud. Rescuers pulled people to safety from cars stranded in waist-high rushing water.

At least three residents of a slum in Rio’s northern zone, including a five-month-old baby, were killed when a mudslide hit two houses, according to media reports.

Television images showed central parts of Rio flooded and abandoned cars under water. Near Copacabana beach, residents waded through ankle-deep water on their way to work but many commuters got stuck in traffic and returned home.

Jharkhand man begs for alms to run orphanage

Dampara (Jharkhand), Sept 17 (ANI): Kantha Singh, a former motor mechanic, plays good samaritan for 42 orphans from tribal communities and runs an orphanage by begging for alms at Dampara village in Jharkhand.

Started in 2007, the orphanage had just 15 children. These children have been rendered homeless due to reckless alcoholism and polygamy prevalent in the area.

“They do not have any guardian. Some of them were even working, while others were living with relatives. We started the orphanage with 15 children, now we have 42. They are all taken care of and they are all studying,” said Singh.

Singh has voluntary workers at the orphanage, who beg for alms in the surrounding villages. The offerings by the people are not always enough. At times, the children have to make do with just salt and rice.

“We go from village to village begging for alms,” said Ramchandra Hembrum, a worker.

Singh’s service has earned him an invitation from the President. He and the other workers at the orphanage are now hopeful that the President would do something for the children.

The unexpected development has left them all overwhelmed.

“He will meet the President and talk to her about how difficult it is to run the orphanage. He will also talk about the needs of the children and all we need to run the orphanage well. He will also talk about their educational and other needs,” said Pather Saran, another worker.

Singh has also been taking care of the education of the orphans. He runs a school within the orphanage and hopes that the President will extend help, in his efforts to educate the children and ensure a good life for them. By Girija Shankar Ojha (ANI)

Rising water level submerge many Uttar Pradesh villages

Durgaganj Village (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 21 (ANI): The rising level of river water over the past couple of days has submerged many villages and rendered thousands of villagers homeless in Uttar Pradesh.

Several rivers, including the Ghaghra, Rapti, Sharda and Saryu, are in spate. Villages in Shrawasti, Sitapur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Bahraich districts of the state have been inundated by flood waters.

“We are facing a lot of trouble due to the floods. There is no fodder for our cattle and there is no food for humans. We tie our cattle by the roadside. We have not received any help from the Government,” claimed Sitaram Yadav, a villager.

Villagers are now being forced to live by the roadside.

“We are living on rooftops and on roadsides, as we have nowhere to go. We have received no help,” said Hariram Yadav, another villager. (ANI)

Afridi hails Younis Khan’s captaincy, says he has made players gel together

London, Aug.21 (ANI): Flamboyant Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has commended captain Younis Khan for his leadership qualities saying he has made the ‘players gel really well’.

Afridi, who is on a charity tour of Britain along with Younis Khan, said the best part of Khan’s captaincy is that he treats every player equally.

“Younis is like an older brother to me and a lot of the younger players. It doesnt make any difference to him whether a player is Punjabi, from Karachi, Pathan or whatever else, he treats everyone the same and really looks after all of us,” PakPassion.net quoted Afridi, as saying.

“Younis has a lot of respect for all the guys in the team, whether you are a senior player or new to international cricket. This makes everyone feel welcome and part of the setup and not an outsider and has really made us gel as a team,” he added.

Afridi said it was Younis who had made him to do charity work for thousands of people facing several difficulties back home.

“Due to the firing and the bomb blasts, lots of people still don’t have roofs over their heads. Coupled with the problems people face in getting basic daily food and drink, and all just before Ramazan, that’s why we’re in UK,” said Afridi, who originally belongs to Swat.

“We need to inform people what is happening in Swat at this moment, where people in their own country are homeless,” he added. (ANI)

Spider-Man does exist, says comic-book guru

Washington, July 4 (ANI): Spider-Man has found life outside of comic-book pages, says an associate humanities librarian for Texas Tech University Libraries.

In an article published in the International Journal of Comic Art, pop-culture guru Rob Weiner basically says that Spider-Man and his costumed peers have entered mankind’s collective consciousness, filling a shared need for heroes.

“When I started reading graphic novels, I was struck by the fact that stories about Spider-Man or Batman and Superman could have as many plot twists and turns as any story by Shakespeare, Stephen King or Leo Tolstoy,” he said.

“I was struck by how good some of the writing was for these so-called “kiddie” books, and that somehow these archetypical characters like Spider-Man were replacing Odysseus and Zeus as part of modern mythology,” he added.

Spider-Man’s resume includes a number of films, a TV series, magazine appearances, graphic novels, videogames, and action figures.

His fans can often be seen clad in his costume, while doing something as humble as feeding the homeless.

“While some of this (affectation) is categorically tongue-in-cheek and they don’t have ‘super powers,’ these actual-world costumed figures are trying to do good for their fellow citizens, which shows just how pervasive fictional realities can be,” Weiner said. (ANI)

Threatened tribal families take refuge in District Collector’s office

Narayanpatra (Orissa), May 30 (ANI): Thirty families of Kondh community have taken shelter in District Collector’s office after being left homeless in Narayanpatna area here following a Maoist support group’s attack on their village.

Villagers said that a Maoist support group ‘Chashi Mulia Adivasi Sangh’, arrived here in their village shouting slogans of ‘Jal, Jungle, Jamin’ (water, forest and land).

The group ransacked the village and forced its residents to leave their houses.

“They came in a gang with different weapons. They destroyed and looted our houses. They belong to the Chashi Mulia Sangh. We are facing a lot of problems, we have no food, we have nothing with us,” said a victim Ram Chandra.

Villagers said they felt very scared after the attackers threatened to kill all male members of the village. The families had to take shelter in the District Collectors’ office.

“They threw stones at us. They broke our houses. We were scared about the security of the male members of the village. Though we did not let males to come out of the houses. But they (attackers) threatened to kill them. So we left our houses and took shelter Narayanpatna Block office. We need help,” said Manohari Bhatra, a tribal woman.

Meanwhile, the District Collector Bichitrananda Das has said that relief is being provided for the victims and peace-building measures are being initiated as well.

“We have provided relief for those who have been adversely affected. We are also providing rehabilitation packages for the people adversely affected especially for their house damage. For the peace building process, senior officers from the district administration, local officials, schoolteachers, primary school workers are visiting the affected villages and interacting with the people. We are trying to escalate the pace of development programmes in the area,” said Bichitrananda Das, District Collector of Koraput. By Sarada Lahangir(ANI)

Danny Boyle buys new home for homeless Azharuddin Ismail

Washington, May 28 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has come to the rescue of childstars Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali after they were left homeless following a slum clearing drive by Mumbai authorities.

After the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire, the film bosses had established the Jai Ho Trust last year (08) to help fund their education.

However, the kids’ recent plight compelled Boyle and producer Christian Colson to fly to Mumbai this week to see how they could help the young stars.

At a meeting in the city’s JW Marriott hotel, Boyle announced he’s purchased a new home for Ismail and is planning to do the same to put a roof over Ali’s head too.

“The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust,” Contactmusic quoted Boyle as saying.

A spokesman for the Jai Ho Trust describes Ismail’s new apartment as “comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school”, with the property costing “upwards of two million rupees” – 42,000 dollars. (ANI)

Sick Rubina Ali spends night on hospital floor

London, May 23 (ANI): ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child star Rubina Ali had to spend a night sleeping on the floor of an Indian hospital after her slum home was bulldozed.

The nine-year-old star suffered from flu after spending two days homeless on the streets of Mumbai.

She was taken to the nearby Bhaba hospital, but because there were no beds left she had to lie in the arms of her aunt Mohidin on the floor.

“Rubina was out in the hot sun when they knocked down our home and then was exposed to the humid night,” the Sun quoted dad Rafiq Qureshi as saying.

“It was extremely stressful for all my family and I am not surprised that this caught up with my daughter,” he added.

However, Rubina has been discharged from hospital and is currently staying in a cramped house. (ANI)

Massive fire engulfs forest area in Kashmir’s Rajouri District

Srinagar, May 22 (ANI): A massive fire has engulfed a large forest area in Rajouri District of Jammu, causing damage to the region’s ecology and rendering many homeless.

The fire, which has been raging for past two days, has not only destroyed large number of trees but is also posing a serious security concern for the nomadic tribes living near the forest.

Forest officials cited prolonged dry spell as the main reason for such incidents.

“We have had a dry season for past two, two-and-half months. Due to the dryness, the needles of the pine trees, growing in the forest become dry. These needles are resinous and hence highly inflammable. When they fall on ground, they catch fire easily due to even slight carelessness,” said S.L. Kaul, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Rajouri.

The major sufferers in the incident have been the Bakkarwals, a nomadic tribe who lost their houses and other belongings.

“My house being near to the forest also caught fire. I lost all my belongings, utensils, clothes, and all other articles. People were saved but we lost all our belongings,” said Husson Din, a victim.

Despite their best efforts, the fire brigade has not been able to control the fire from spreading further.

Unavailability of water is a major handicap in controlling the fire.

“We informed the authorities and one guard came to take a look but he could not do much. Then the fire officials came and they have succeeded in controlling it a bit, but there have been massive losses due to the fire,” said Mazir, a local resident.

The fire has also led to a rise in the temperature of the region around the forest cover. (ANI)

Taliban agrees to pull out from some parts of Lower Dir in NWFP

Islamabad, May 22 (ANI): The Taliban has agreed to move out of the Asbanr and Gulabad areas of the Lower Dir region of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) within the next two days.

Sources said the Taliban has assured a local jirga in Adenzai tehsil of Lower Dir district that they would pull out of the region soon.

Sultanat Yar of Jamaat-i-Islami, Khurshid Ali of Pakistan People’s Party and tribal leaders Umar Bacha and Shamsul Qamar attended the jirga, the Dawn reports.

The Taliban has agreed to leave the region without any condition, after the jirga urged them to pull back, as hundreds of people were rendered homeless and scores of innocent civilians were killed because of their activities in the region.

“They did not set any condition for pulling out,” a member of the jirga said.

The jirga also urged the government to stop the military offensive and ask the troops to pull out of the region as soon as possible. (ANI)

Brad Pitt wants to expand New Orleans building project for homeless

Washington, May 21 (ANI): Brad Pitt is drawing plans to expand his building project in Louisiana to provide more roofs for the New Orleans residents affected by the 2005 Hurricane Katrina.

The disaster left the city devastated as thousands of homes were ruined while many people lost their lives.

In a bid to restructure the place, the actor and his charitable organisation ‘Make It Right Foundation’ had helped rebuild homes for the affected people.

And now the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star, who is on target to achieve his goal of building 100 homes by the end of 2009, wants to pile more roofs.

“It’s exceeding my expectations. But it’s really, it’s hundreds, thousands of people that made it happen,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“One hundred and fifty (houses) is our goal. We’ll have 100 by the end of the year. So next year, we’ll have 150. But I’m hoping we can expand that, because the machine works,” he added. (ANI)

The 9 things Lindsay needs to do to save her career

New York, May 1 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan was a superstar in the making at the age of 17-what with four major movies, followed by a hit with ‘Mean Girls’ and a platinum album and numerous magazine covers.

However, with her lifestyle turning towards DUIs, a series of tumultuous personal relationships, stints in rehab and a few ‘unregistered’ movies, she turned into media’s favourite toy.

But, many believe that at 22, Lindsay can still save the sinking ship of her career and put together her life again.

And leading publicists, agents, media insiders and career coaches have now enlisted the nine things Lohan should do to save her career, and they are:

1. Get behind a good cause

“She needs to get involved in charitable work,” The New York Daily News quoted Allison Kugel, President of Allison Dawn Public Relations, as saying.

She added that Lohan should publicly support a feel-good cause like children, animals or the homeless.

2. Develop self-discipline

World-renowned career coach Jim Fannin said that self-discipline is a key for Lohan to get her career back on track.

3. Focus on doing her job well

“Lindsay Lohan needs to focus on doing her job. She’s an actress, yet all we know recently are her DUIs and relationship issues. Maybe that means taking jobs that may not be the best paying, but can build her acting credibility and gain her respect in the industry,” said Joe Ciarallo, Editor of PRNewser.

4. Network

Lohan needs to attend industry events and network with industry leaders so they can “see that she’s changed,” said Melissa Schumer, Executive Vice President of Cohn and Wolfe.

5. Take a page from Angelina’s book

Angelina Jolie is a good example of how an actress can get her life and career back on track, said Kugel.

6. Use humour to her advantage

“It was smart for her to do the eHarmony item,” said Cooper Lawrence, author of the book ‘Cult of Celebrity’.

The eHarmony item was a video clip satirizing her life for the FunnyorDie.com Web site. She added that these kinds of things can help us like her again.

7. Tone down the edge

Lawrence said that Lohan should try to revive that sweet girl image; similar to the character she played in ‘Mean Girls’.

8. Take control of her personal life and how it’s portrayed in the media

Schumer added that her constant presence on the bar scene is not helping her image and she also needs to better control how her personal life is portrayed in the media.

9. Surround herself with the right people

The road ahead for Lindsay will have its bumps, and to endure it, she’s going to need to surround herself with the right people, whether its good friends or savvy publicists and managers. (ANI)

Poland allots million zloty for help in fire that killed 22 – Summary

Warsaw – Poland’s government will allot one million zloty (305,269 dollars) to aid families and survivors of a fire that killed 22 people and injured 20, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Tuesday. Poland will also build a new facility for those left homeless by the blaze that struck a hostel for the homeless in the early hours of Monday. A seven-person commission was investigating the cause.

Polish police on Tuesday were searching for a teenage girl who went missing from hospital following the fire. She was reported missing Monday afternoon, reported the Polish Press Agency PAP.

The teenager might have wandered off in shock, reported Polish Radio, as her entire family died in the flames.

Police Tuesday were also searching for one hostel resident thought to be dead.

In total 77 people were registered in the hostel in the Baltic Sea coastal town of Kamien Pomorski, around 500 kilometres north-west of Warsaw.

Witnesses said a number of hostel residents were injured when they jumped from windows to escape the blaze.

An eight-month-old baby among the injured was transferred Tuesday to the intensive care unit and connected to a respirator, PAP reported.(dpa)
