Protest in Manipur against Naga leader”s visit

Imphal (Manipur), May 16 (ANI): Scores of protestors took to the streets in Imphal to protest the proposed visit of leader of National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah, who wants unification and eventual independence of Naga-dominated areas in the north-east.

The tension intensified here on Saturday as the protestors raised slogans against Muivah.

They alleged that Muivah”s homecoming was only a ploy to create a communal crisis in the state.

“We have co-existed together with love and peace and I believe his entry in the state will destroy the peaceful atmosphere and end that relationship amongst us,” said Rojen Mayengbam, a protestor.

“We always want to live together peacefully and we want to say that if a problem will be created, it is better for him not to enter,” he added.

Earlier this month, the state government banned Muivah from visiting Somdal, located in Ukhrul district.

The NSCN-IM had agreed to a ceasefire in August 1997 and launched a peace process with the Central Government to bring an end to the longest-running insurgency in India.

The rebel group has participated in several rounds of talks with central officials since the start of the ceasefire.

But talks between the two sides have not made progress over the rebels” main demand of unification and eventual independence of Naga-dominated areas in northeast India. (ANI)

Manipuri women protest against proposed visit of Naga leader

Imphal, May 14 (ANI): Around 1,000 women staged a sit-in protest here on Thursday against the visit of National Socialist Council of Nagalim”s (Isak-Muivah) leader, Thuingaleng Muivah, to the state.

The protest was carried out by the Advanced Women Society at the Awang Sekmai Bazaar in Imphal.

After the sit-in protest, the women took out a rally in Sekmai area shouting slogans against Muivah”s visit.

“We are opposing Muivah”s attempt to enter Manipur with an intention to destroy Manipur. We are expressing our anger. We have decided to close down all our business establishments and have stopped our daily errands as well. And so we have been staging today”s sit-in protest,” said Memcha Devi, a protestor.

The protestors also allege that Muivah”s homecoming is only a ploy to cause communal crisis in the state.

“Even though he was born in Manipur, he has never spoken for Manipur and instead supports Nagaland. He has made Manipur suffer a lot,” said Amubi Devi, secretary of Advanced Women Society.

Earlier, violent clashes between Muivah”s supporters and security forces at the border town of Mao resulted in the death of two women protestors and left over 50 others injured.

Musharraf ready to defend himself against five allegations

Islamabad, Apr 5(ANI): Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who is set to launch his political party next month, has said he is ready to counter the allegations levelled against him in the media.

“The former president (Musharraf) is ready to defend five allegations against him, including the Lal Masjid operation, murder of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, promulgation of the defunct National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and removal of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry as the chief justice of Pakistan and imposition of dictatorial rule in the country,” The News quoted Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Musharraf’s lawyer and a close aide, as saying.

“General (retired) Musharraf is all set to launch his own political party next month,” he added.

He further said the name of the new party had been finalised, and reiterated that Musharraf has decided to stage a comeback.

“We have applied for registration under the name of the All Pakistan Muslim League,” he said.

“The former president will announce the date of his homecoming by the end of the next month (May),” he added.

Hussain also put forward Musharraf’s view about the current government’s performance, and said the former president was very disappointed, as people are facing many problems, including a power crisis, poverty, unemployment and lawlessness.

“People are suffering from multiple problems and looking for a genuine leadership, so that their problems are solved,” Hussain quoted Musharraf as saying. (ANI)

Sydney gives Reddy happy homecoming

Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka is eyeing a Socceroos star as he bids to strengthen the creative and attacking parts of his A-League winning team, after snapping up goalkeeper Liam Reddy.

The newly-crowned champions have moved quickly in the aftermath of last week’s triumph, securing three members of their coaching staff and re-signing veteran defender Hayden Fox earlier in the week.

The worst kept A-League secret was finally confirmed on Thursday when 28-year-old Reddy agreed to a three-year contract, moving across from the Wellington Phoenix.

The Sydney-born shot stopper was looking forward to coming home after stints with Newcastle, Brisbane and Wellington.

“They’ve got a great coaching staff and structure at the club and that was a major drawcard for me,” Reddy said.

“This club wants to achieve things and I want to win a competition, so that’s the major reason I’ve come here.”

Lavicka and senior club management spent Tuesday planning for their title defence next season, covering a wide range of issues.

With Reddy and the recently re-signed Ivan Necevsky covering the goalkeeping position, Lavicka will turn his attention to strengthening the attacking part of his side.

His top priority is replacing retired playmaker Steve Corica, while he will also pursue an extra striker, with veteran forward John Aloisi yet to decide his future.

Sydney will hold further talks over the next few days with Aloisi, whose contract expires next Wednesday, and who has been linked to incoming A-League franchise Melbourne Heart.

Czech-born Lavicka will use his imminent holiday in Europe to check out some potential recruits.

Sydney has at least two import spots available and possibly a third, depending on when grand final captain Terry McFlynn receives his Australian citizenship.

“We need to replace Steve Corica and we need to find and bring the right person for that position and still we would like to improve the attacking part as well, that means bringing another good quality striker,” Lavicka said.

Lavicka revealed he was looking at a European-based Socceroo to replace Corica and while he was coy about revealing the identity, it sounded suspiciously like it could be English-based Nick Carle.

“The priority for us is an Australian player who plays overseas. It’s very difficult because he’s under contract over there,” Lavicka said.

“He has impressed me the last two seasons. He’s a number 10 player, a Socceroos player.”

While Reddy replaces the departed Clint Bolton, Sydney has also lost defender Simon Colosimo to Korean club FC Seoul, while Slovak international midfielder Karol Kisel is not expected to return to Sydney.

Reddy did not anticipate any awkward moments training alongside young Sydney striker Chris Payne, who scored a controversial goal against him during the finals after clearly handling the ball.

“Obviously I will give him a little bit of stick, but I can’t give him too much, because Sydney ended up beating Wellington, so he will come back at me twice as bad,” Reddy said.

Katy Perry celebrates LA homecoming gig with food fight!

London, Sept 1 (ANI): Singer Katy Perry celebrated her LA homecoming gig with a messy food fight.

The ‘I Kissed A Girl’ hitmaker returned to Los Angeles after touring in Europe.

She played a successful show at the Palladium in Hollywood last weekend before heading to the W-Hood nightclub for an afterparty with friends and members of her entourage.

However, her afterparty turned messy at the end of the evening as Perry and her pals indulged in a massive food fight with a tray of cup cakes from fashionable U.S. bakery Crumbs.

The singer was snapped emerging from the venue with chocolate and cream smeared on her face, arms, and her black one-piece jump suit.

She also had pieces of sponge and chocolate in her hair.

Perry wrote on her Twitter blog, “Just got face swiped by crumbs cupcakes. So fun tonight!” (ANI)

Depeche Mode’s O2 gig derailed due to tumour scare

London, May 29 (ANI): British electronic music pioneers, Depeche Mode, have cancelled their homecoming gig at the O2 after announcing that its lead singer, Dave Gahan, was recovering from an emergency cancer surgery.

Gahan, 47, had undergone an operation to remove a cancerous tumor from his bladder.

Now he has been ordered to take time off, reports The Sun.

Medics discovered the growth by chance during routine tests after Gahan suffered a nasty stomach bug that has also scuppered nine dates on their Tour Of The Universe.

The heroes had been gearing up to make their grand return at the O2 supershow.

However, a statement released by the band yesterday, said: “On May 12, lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a severe bout of gastroenteritis, leading to his hospitalisation and the cancellation of the Athens concert.

“While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a lowgrade malignant tumour in Dave’s bladder, which has since been successfully removed.

“At doctors’ orders, Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8, to ensure that he makes a full recovery. The Leipzig show on June 8 will be the first concert following Dave’s recovery.

“Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience.

“Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused.” (ANI)

Morrissey cancels more shows due to illness after b’day gig

Washington, May 26 (ANI): Just two days after marking his 50th birthday with a homecoming set in Manchester, singer Morrissey has cancelled gig dates because of ill-health.

The ex ‘Smiths’ frontman cancelled his May 25th’s show at the Salisbury City Hall and May 26th’s concert at the Troxy Ballroom in Mile End, east London.

Labelled the “greatest lyricist of his generation” this week, the singer-songwriter has been warned not to sing by doctors, said a spokeswoman.

“Morrissey is on doctor’s orders to postpone the show, to ensure a complete recuperation,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

She added: “Event organisers would like to apologise to fans for the disappointment and are working to reschedule this show, so advise ticket holders to hang on to their tickets.”

Apparently, these are not the first on the 50-year-old’s world tour with shows at the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Academy called off while an appearance on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ was also scrapped.

However, the cancelled Birmingham and Albert Hall shows have now been rescheduled as part of a small October tour, it was announced last week. (ANI)

Boy George gorges on food after release from jail

London, May 12 (ANI): Brit singer-songwriter Boy George ordered a huge bumper of cakes, coffee, and bagels to be delivered to his house after he was released from jail.

The 47-year-old, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, was welcomed by a friend outside the north London pad with a meal of tofu sausage casserole with a tofu steak and seaweed salad.

“It’s great to be out. It’s a bit daunting, but it’s nice. It went fine,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

However, the homecoming celebrations would not have any booze involved.

“We don’t drink, so there’s definitely not going to be any of that kind of celebrating going on,” his brother Kevin added.

George, who looked slimmer and healthier after serving four months of a 15-month sentence for falsely imprisoning a male escort, will have an electronic tag fitted to serve the remaining months under curfew. (ANI)

Gwyneth Paltrow’s posh LA mansion is ‘infested’ with rats!

London, April 13 (ANI): Gwyneth Paltrow has temporarily moved out of her posh LA home, thanks to some unwanted guests – rats.

The stunning actress’ house was said to have been infested with rats which allegedly led her to hire a pest control team.

And the Oscar-winner was now reportedly staying in an apartment near her mother.

“Gwyneth wanted everything to be perfect,” the Daily Star quoted a friend as telling Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.

“She was so excited about moving to L.A. with the family and to be closer to her actress mum. It will be the first time in ages that she, Chris and the children will be living together as a family.

“But her stomach turned at the thought of rats running around. She didn’t want her homecoming ruined by those horrible creatures.

“Being an animal lover, Gwyneth didn’t want the vermin harmed, just removed,” the friend added. (ANI)

UK Tory leaders react angrily to exiled hate preacher’s Islamic rant

London, Mar.21 (ANI): Leaders of Britain’s Conservative (Tory) Party have expressed anger at the Gordon Brown Government for allowing exiled hate preacher Omar Bakri Mohammed to address an anti-West public meeting here.

The fundamentalist cleric came out of hiding to issue a chilling warning that Britain should prepare for a September 11,2001 style atrocity.

Speaking from his home in Lebanon, Bakri, who was kicked out of Britain four years ago, gave his support to fanatics who abused brave British soldiers in a vile attack during their homecoming parade in Luton last week.

Addressing a meeting held at an east London hotel by telephone, he said British troops had declared war on Islam and must suffer the consequences – along with innocent civilians.

“You want to declare war against us, we will declare Islam against you,” he said.

“It is time for you to wake up before it is too late. If you put pressure on Muslims and push them underground, people will come and rise and retaliate against you,” he added.

Despite the highly incendiary nature of the remarks, Scotland Yard last night refused to take any action against the organisers of the meeting.

Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, the chairman of the Commons counter terrorism sub committee, said it was time the Government acted to stop such activities taking place.Surely those who accept and broadcast these telephone calls are guilty of the crime of incitement. The Government must stop soft- pedalling with this and stamp the laws of the country on them, Mercer was quoted, as saying.

Former Conservative Home Secretary Ann Widdecombe said: “These people should be prosecuted for incitement. It is quite disgraceful. If I was to hold a meeting like this and make these kinds of comments about members of the Muslim community I would be prosecuted. The Government has failed to acts on these matters for a very long time and I am afraid that the law has now become quite toothless.”

Bakri’s rant was broadcast on loudspeakers to ringleaders of the shameful protest at the welcome home march in Luton for the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment. The extremists, including Bakri’s right-hand man Anjem Choudary, who wants Britain to be governed by Sharia law, urged Muslims to continue to insult British soldiers and attack “evil” democracy – no matter what the consequences. Slumdog Millionaire child star beaten by father after returning home

London, Feb 28 (ANI): ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child star Azharuddin had a rather painful homecoming after attending the Oscars, for the boy was beaten up by his father just because he wanted to have some rest.

Mohammed Ismail slapped and kicked his 10-year-old son in front of shocked neighbours and passers-by soon after he flew back to India from Los Angeles, where he and his other young co-stars watched as their movie picked up eight Oscars.

Azharuddin, who plays young hero Jamal, got tears in the eyes and ran back inside his home, cowering and begging his father to stop while trying to hide in a corner.

The young star had been given the day off school after his long flight and wanted to take rest, but his father wanted to show him off outside their home.

And when the boy didn’t agree, the 45-year-old father, who is hoping his son could be his ticket to get out of Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, launched his attack while his mother pleaded Ismail to stop.

“Azharuddin’s father was upset that he was asking to be left alone because he was so tired. He didn’t attend school today so that he could recover from his long flight from LA and simply wanted all the attention to stop. However, when Azharuddin put his foot down and said that was it and there was to be no more talking, Ismail just flipped,” the Sun quoted one stunned onlooker as saying.

However, Azharuddin’s return to the slums was another picture altogether when his father had lifted him up and paraded him like a trophy.

Just a few hours after the attack, TB patient Ismail apologised for the attack, saying: “I was very sorry I did what I did. I was confused and stressed by my son’s homecoming and I did not know myself for a minute. I love my boy and I am very happy to have him home.” (ANI)

Robert Burns dubbed ‘racist, misogynist drunk’ by leading historian

London, Jan 5 (ANI): Late Scottish poet Robert Burns has been dubbed a ‘racist, misogynist drunk’ by a leading historian, who says that the Bard is not a fitting figure for Scotland”s 2009 Homecoming celebrations.

Michael Fry has put down Burns as a role model, and said that there were other more heroic figures like William Wallace, Robert the Bruce or Bonnie Prince Charlie who could better promote Scotland”s image abroad.

The Bard, as Burns is known in Scotland, is the main attraction for the Homecoming, with a series of events designed to attract visitors to Scotland kicking off on Burns Night later this month.

The event will mark the 250th anniversary of the Bard”s birth, and it will continue until St Andrew”s Day in November.

“Burns was a drunk, misogynistic, racist philanderer,” the Scotsman quoted Fry as saying.

“Perhaps he was not untypical of Scots, but we have to wonder whether this is the right image for the modern Scotland.

“By all means, let us celebrate the poetry according to its merits. But, in the same critical spirit, let us deal honestly with the man who wrote that poetry,” he stated.

On Burns being a role model for the modern Scots, Fry said that everyone would start being irresponsible like the Bard.

“We could repeatedly get drunk. In this condition, the males among us could ”lay” one woman after another, following discussion of their respective merits in dirty talk with our drouthie cronies, he said.

“Needless to say, this would be unprotected sex performed in a spirit of utter indifference to potential pregnancies, amang the rigs o”barley perhaps. Irksome consequences would be the females” own silly fault.

“It is only right to mark Burns” 250th anniversary in a literary sense. But in 2009, his example, in a practical sense, could well send Scotland straight down the tubes.

“Are there not, at the very least, other heroes preferable for a period of adversity? It is difficult to see Burns as an inspiration for testing times,” he added.

The Scottish Government hopes that the Homecoming will assist the country during the economic crisis, and also boost the tourist trade throughout the year.

“Robert Burns is an international cultural icon and one of Scotland”s favourite sons. He was both a man of his time and of all time. He wouldn”t have been human without flaws, and his egalitarian ideals have helped cement his universal and timeless appeal,” a Scottish Government spokesman added. (ANI)
