Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson won for best featured actress in a play for her performance in a revival of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge.”

“Being welcomed in this community has been an absolute dream come true,” she said.

“Will & Grace” actor Sean Hayes hosted the awards and shared the stage with punk rock band Green Day who performed songs from their album turned musical “American Idiot” in front of well-known figures who attended, including Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, Antonio Banderas and Jay-Z.

The Tony Awards, which do not consider off-Broadway productions, are voted on by about 700 producers, actors and writers. They were established in 1947 and are named for actress, stage director and philanthropist Antoinette Perry, whose nickname was Toni.

Spector appeals murder conviction

Lawyers for music producer Phil Spector have appealed his conviction for killing a Hollywood actress.

The appeal, filed last week in California’s Second Appellate Court, says the judge unfairly allowed five women to testify that years before the 2003 shooting Spector had threatened with them with a gun.

The lawyers, led by Dennis Riordan of San Francisco-based Riordan & Horgan, say trial judge Larry Fidler made errors with jury instructions, wrongly changed rulings and, importantly, offered his own testimony in Spector’s second trial, which violates state law.

“Reversal of [Spector's] conviction is required on the basis of improper judicial testimony alone,” the lawyers said in their appeal, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

Spector, 70, is serving 19 years to life in prison for shooting 40-year-old actress Lana Clarkson in the mouth on February 3, 2003.

The case drew worldwide interest because Spector is widely known as a pioneer of rock music.

Along with The Beatles, he has worked with The Ronettes, Cher and Leonard Cohen and created the distinctive “Wall of Sound” production technique that layered musical tracks over one another and became widely used in the early days of rock.

Spector met Clarkson at the House of Blues nightclub on the famed Sunset Strip. The two went back to his house and Clarkson was shot and killed.

Spector’s defence lawyers claimed the actress committed suicide by shooting herself in the mouth because she was depressed about her acting career. But prosecutors said Spector murdered her in a fit of rage.

A first trial ended in a deadlocked jury.

At a second trial, Spector was convicted in April last year and sentenced on May 29. At the time, his lawyers said they would appeal.

Key to the defence lawyers’ appeal is their claim that prosecutors shifted testimony on forensic evidence dealing with blood spatters.

The change in testimony was supported by a videotape, made during a meeting outside the presence of the jury, in which Judge Fidler offered his own opinions.

The lawyers say that video was essentially new evidence that should never have been admitted.

Jolie takes adopted daughter Zahara on first visit to native Ethiopia

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie’s eldest daughter Zahara returned to her native Ethiopia for the first time since her adoption four years ago.

The four-year-old flew back home with her mother at the weekend.

It all happened when Jolie, currently in Kenya on a United Nations mission with partner Brad Pitt and their six children, broke away from the trip to cross the border into Ethiopia.

Zahara’s little sister Shiloh, 3, also accompanied them.

However, Pitt and the couple’s other four children stayed behind.

“On a trip to Kenya with their children, Angelina stopped in Dabaab Refugee Camp, and also flew to Ethiopia with Zahara and Shiloh for two days,” Contactmusic quoted a source as having told People.com.

“(It was) the first time Zahara had been back home since her adoption. The trip was about keeping up that culture for her,” the source added.

If reports are to be believed, Jolie is looking for a property to build a tuberculosis and AIDS clinic in Zahara’s name.

The Hollywood couple jointly founded a similar organisation to aid impoverished children-known as the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project-after adopting their eight-year-old son Maddox from Cambodia in 2002. (ANI)

Mayer ‘begs’ Aniston for another chance

Washington, Sept 16 (ANI): John Mayer desperately wants to get back with Jennifer Aniston, it has emerged.

The ‘Gravity’ singer reportedly telephoned ex-girlfriend in tears, begging her to take him back, reports Contactmusic.

Mayer dumped the Hollywood actress in March this year.

A source said: “John asked Jen if they could go back to seeing each other exclusively. The call came as a massive surprise and of course Jen is delighted with John’s announcement – who wouldn’t be?”

The 31-year-old star has reportedly promised to give the relationship his “best shot” if she agrees to take him back.

The source explained to Britain’s Look magazine: “John suggested that if all is going well with them in six months, then they can begin discussing marriage and building a life together. Jen was floored! John always seemed so anti-commitment before. But now he’s begging Jen for another chance and he’s promising to give the relationship his best shot.

“Despite his big plans, John suggested they don’t rush into moving in together. She’ll keep her house in Beverly Hills, while John will continue to live in Pacific Palisades. I think it’s just because he wants to move slowly and avoid mistakes they made previously.”

Aniston was most recently linked to Gerard Butler, who she stars alongside in The Bounty, and Bradley Cooper. (ANI)

“It was a little big… like a haunted mansion, a creepy house. It had that kind of feel to it and it was just wrong for us in a lot of ways,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“It felt like we were going to get child services calling us because we had this nice house and the kids were sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags because they were afraid to go sleep in their rooms, so we moved.

“We’re liking (Manhattan). It’s easy. it’s comfortable, everyone sleeps,” she added. (ANI)

Demi Moore threatens to sue blogger Perez Hilton over daughter’s pics

Washington, September 4 (ANI): Hollywood actress Demi Moore has threatened to sue celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, after she spotted a link on the latter’s site directing viewers to a set of “inappropriate” pictures of her teen daughter Tallulah.

The 15-year-old is the youngest of Demi’s three daughters with ex-husband Bruce Willis.

According to reports, the snaps Demi is angry at show the teen baring her chest in a revealing top, and wearing a tiny pair of shorts.

Moore has expressed her disgust about the pictures on her Twitter.com page, accusing the blogger of flouting child pornography laws.

“Expect another letter from my attorney, kitten,” Contactmusic quoted her as having written.

Moore goes on to rage about Hilton’s “exploitation” of teens in a series of furious posts.

She wrote: “Clearly Perez Hilton isn’t taking violating child pornography laws very seriously. He might not but there are a lot of people who do! Anyone who advertises follows or supports Perez supports violating child pornography laws!”

She further wrote: “Let me ask all of you, what is it called when someone is telling people to look and focus on a child’s ‘boobs and ass’ while providing photos? (It’s) child pornography! Or just being a general pervert/creep. Disgusting! This is not a game. Children should not be exploited. They must be protected.”

Hitting back at Morre, Hilton called her comments “libellous, defamatory, inaccurate and stupid.”

In a post on his own Twitter.com page, he writes: “Thanks for drawing MORE attention to your daughter’s behaviour and your parenting skills (or lack thereof). U r (sic) real smart! That is CLEARLY not child porn. And I didn’t even post those on my site! I would not let my 15 year old daughter dress like that under ANY context. You are delusional and slightly senile!” (ANI)
