Many Hollywood actors ‘suck’ at their jobs, says Mickey Rourke

Melbourne, May 08 (ANI): ‘The Wrestler’ star Mickey Rourke thinks many Hollywood actors ‘suck’ at their jobs.

Mickey, who has been promoting ‘Iron Man 2’, says he doesn’t respect many actors and claims that many of them ‘suck,’ reports the Daily Telegraph.

The 57-year-old star said, “You can be less than mediocre and be a f*****g movie star. I have respect for very few actors and actresses. Some of them get a lot of acclaim but just because their movie made 200 million dollars at the box office; they still suck. I got no respect for them and I used to let them know it.”

However, the leading man who received critical acclaim for his role as Randy ””The Ram”” Robinson”” in ””The Wrestler”” prefers to avoid arguments with other artists and clearly maintains dignity when he doesn’t like the co-star.

“It was important for me to put that aside and go, ””You know what? This is a business. If you kiss the right a*s and you get lucky on a movie or two, you could last 10 years.”” So, now, I just keep my mouth shut and pet my Chihuahuas,” he told Parade.com. (ANI)

Mayweather survives onslaught to outclass Mosley

Floyd Mayweather resisted a furious early onslaught by fellow American Shane Mosley to preserve his unbeaten professional record with an unanimous points victory in a welterweight bout on Saturday.

Widely regarded as the best defensive fighter of his generation, Mayweather dominated 11 of the 12 rounds with his lightning hand speed and agile movement to improve his career record to 41-0 with 25 knockouts.

A 4-1 favourite going into the highly anticipated bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Mayweather was stunned by a flurry of punishing blows from Mosley in the second round.

However, the 33-year-old immediately regained control and he dictated the rest of the fight with his probing right hand, rock-solid defence and a series of telling combinations.

“I did what the fans came here to see,” Mayweather said in a ringside interview. “I went toe-to-toe. That’s not my style but I wanted to give them that kind of fight and I knew I could do it.”

Asked how he had recovered from Mosley’s early onslaught, Mayweather replied: “It’s a contact sport and you’re going to get hit.

“But when you get hit, you’ve got to suck it up and keep on fighting. And that’s what I did.”

The flamboyant American gained one-sided verdicts from all three judges — 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110.

WBA welterweight champion Mosley, who had not fought since a ninth-round TKO upset of feared Mexican slugger Antonio Margarito in Jan. 2009, slipped to 46-6 with 39 knockouts.

CONFIDENT START

Watched by a crowd of around 16,000 that included Hollywood actors Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio and boxing greats Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, Mayweather made a confident start.

Mosley then responded in round two, landing several punishing blows with his right hand on Mayweather’s head. Mayweather briefly buckled and was pinned against the ropes after Mosley switched his attack to a series of body jabs.

“I caught him with my big right hand and I tried to move around but he was too quick and I was too tight,” Mosley, 38, said of his dominance in the second round.

“After I landed the right hand, I thought I needed to knock him out but I needed to do it sooner than later. But I couldn’t adjust and he did.”

With Mosley’s work rate slowing, Mayweather regained the initiative in rounds three and four with several well executed combinations and low body jabs.

Looking fresher and much more composed, he retained control in round five, continually peppering Mosley, bloodying his nose with his probing right hand while maintaining a tight defence.

In the eighth round, Mosley was reprimanded by the referee for grabbing his opponent’s arm and a grinning Mayweather responded with a verbal volley while landing a series of blows to the head.

Mayweather, who had backpeddled in the earlier rounds, continued to push forward and he dictated the rest of the fight with measured body jabs and crunching rights.

He dominated the official ringside statistics, connecting with 208 of 477 punches thrown to 92 of 452 for Mosley. Mayweather also landed 123 power punches compared to Mosley’s 46.

Shakira to build Haiti school

Colombian pop star Shakira has met child survivors of Haiti’s earthquake as her charity prepares to build a school in the disaster-stricken Caribbean country.

The singer, who has already joined Hollywood actors and other global celebrities to raise funds for the victims of the January 12 earthquake, flew into the wrecked Haitian capital Port-au-Prince aboard a private jet.

At the planned site of her Barefoot Haiti school, she met about 100 children, some of whom danced to her songs. She then toured a camp housing nearly 50,000 people on a golf course. There, she met US actor Sean Penn, whose own charity is also helping victims.

“We’ve come to make all the preparations to be able to start the building of a Barefoot school here in Haiti,” Shakira said in a brief interview.

She explained that the school would be modelled on similar establishments created by her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation, a charity that provides education, nutrition and psychological support to more than 6,000 Colombian children displaced by violence.

“We think we can employ what we’ve learned [in Colombia] here, apply it in this country which needs it so much at the moment,” Shakira added.

The Haitian school would be built and run with other non-governmental organisations.

The Haiti quake, described by some experts as the deadliest natural disaster in modern history, may have killed more than 300,000 people, the Haitian government says. It also left more than a million people homeless, many of them young orphans.

Shakira said providing education to Haitian children would be a key part of the reconstruction of the quake-shattered country, which even before the disaster was already the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere.

“We need to think about the future of this country and of how Haiti’s children can be useful to their societies tomorrow … Education is one of the fundamental tools with which to develop and rebuild Haiti,” she said.

Orson Welles” final recordings to form basis of a new children”s film

London, March 30 (ANI): The last professional recordings of Orson Welles will now be turned into a children’s film 25 years after the filmmaker’s death.

The show reels, which contain footage of Welles narrating a children”s Christmas novel, were believed to have been lost.

Now Welles voice will be interspersed throughout the film Christmas Tails.

Christmas Tails’ author Richard Leeds had requested his friend Welles to narrate the story for him in 1985 making five reels of recordings.

Welles passed away after a few months later while the reels lay unknown in a cupboard in Leeds” home in Las Vegas.

Harvey Lowry, President of Drac Studios, which produced The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, contacted Leeds in 2009 after hearing a rumour about the tapes.

“This is a substantial find, something a filmmaker dreams of,” the Telegraph quoted Lowry, as telling The Independent.

The tapes were placed in a chemical bath and digitally remastered because they were quite old.

According to Lowry, several Hollywood actors want to star in the film, to be helmed by Todd Tucker.

The movie will have 3D live-action and computer graphics.

The plot follows Father Christmas’ panic after his reindeer fell ill nearly forcing him to cancel his annual deliveries before his dog comes to his rescue. (ANI)

Depp, Clooney, DiCaprio, Timberlake, Foxx being considered for Frank Sinatra role

New York, May 18 (ANI): Academy Award winning film director Martin Scorsese is facing the biggest challenge of his career, as he has to cast an actor to play the role of a young Frank Sinatra in his big-budget biopic.

Film industry insiders have come up with a few names of Hollywood actors, who are most likely to fit the part, with three-time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp topping the list.

“One issue for Johnny is his age. He’s 45. But he’s youthful enough to play nearly anybody,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

“I think Johnny Depp is the guy,” Donald Trump echoed the source’s choice.

“He’s got Sinatra’s angular face, and he’s a great actor who can play anything from a pirate to a cross-dressing director in ‘Ed Wood’ to Willy Wonka,” he said.

Other names that have been included are newcomer James Franco, Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Buble, Jon Hamm, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harry Connick Jnr, and surprisingly actor Jamie Foxx.

“Jamie would seem to be born to the role,” the Daily Star quoted an industry insider as saying.

“Magnificent voice, convincing acting ability – like Frank himself – born the wrong side of the tracks, makes it big against the odds, has his brushes with authority.

“The guy’s a gift,” the insider stated.

But the final decision will also depend on Tina Sinatra, who gave Scorsese permission to use her father’s recordings, and who is also an executive producer of the film. (ANI)

Hollywood actors expected to ratify contract

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Despite continued discord within Hollywood’s biggest labor union, members of the Screen Actors Guild are expected next month to ratify a tentative studio contract narrowly endorsed by its governing board.

Industry experts say approval of the proposed deal would help rejuvenate feature film production that has languished since the old contract covering 120,000 SAG members in film and television expired nine months ago, heightening concerns of a strike.

“We look at this as an important step to get the industry moving,” Dan Glickman, chairman and chief executive of the Motion Picture Association of America, said on Monday about the tentative SAG contract. “This was a bit of a cloud on the industry.”

The recession and global credit crisis have only worsened the production slowdown as studios coping with uncertainty over the labor dispute faced new financial constraints. The economic downturn also was a major factor undermining union support for SAG’s efforts at driving a harder bargain.

“A lot of the rank and file are hurting. They’re out there working in retail, working in hospitality, and those jobs are disappearing,” said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.

One key barometer of the film business, on-location movie production in Los Angeles, hit a record low in this year’s first quarter, falling 56 percent from 2008, according to FilmL.A., the agency that issues local street-filming permits.

“Studio feature production is still at a virtual halt,” said Jonathan Handel, an entertainment lawyer who has ties to both Hollywood labor and management and has published a blog following the contract talks.

He suggested that studios were driven to finally close a deal with SAG in part by concern that ramping production back up without a settlement “would have handed SAG leverage in the form of the ability to shut down a production by striking.”

Handel and others predict union hard-liners, led by SAG president Alan Rosenberg, will wage a campaign to defeat the deal reached last Friday with studio executives and approved Sunday by SAG’s sharply divided national board of directors.

Rosenberg has condemned the proposed labor pact as a “terrible” deal and argued that rejection by the rank and file would force the studios to negotiate a better offer.

But when ballots are counted at the end of the three-week voting period, most observers believe union moderates who gained control of the board in elections last fall will have mustered a majority of votes needed to ratify the accord.

The old contract expired June 30 after talks collapsed and the studios presented what they called their “final” offer.

That proposal essentially mirrored the terms of separate contracts the studios reached with several other Hollywood talent unions, including the deal last year that ended a 14-week strike by the Writers Guild of America.

The two sides in the SAG talks were most firmly at odds over how actors should be paid for work on the Internet, seen as the main distribution pipeline for future entertainment.

In the end, SAG was forced to give up several of its chief demands, including rerun fees, also called residuals, for new shows created specifically for the Internet. Rosenberg and his allies say compromises in related areas went too far.

But Sam Freed, head of SAG’s New York division and a member of the negotiating team who supports the deal, said he believed most members were more concerned with a continued stalemate.

“People want to get back to work,” he said. “The lack of a contract has depressed production and directly decreased the opportunities for actors to work.”

Thurman, Ryan, Goldberg, Brody to head Tribeca Film Festival

London, Apr 22 (ANI): Hollywood actors Uma Thurman, Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg and Adrien Brody have been chosen to head the judging panel at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

The stars will be joined by fellow celebrities James Franco, Mary-Kate Olsen, Bradley Cooper, Melissa Leo, Parker Posey and Morgan Spurlock, who are all among the 32 jurors at Robert De Niro’s movie event, which kicks off today.

The line-up was announced at a press conference in the Big Apple on April 21, which featured Thurman, director Spike Lee and festival founders De Niro and Jane Rosenthal.

Thurman has expressed her delight at getting to play such a key role in the eighth annual festival.

“For me and people who enjoy films, Tribeca has been a major event for which all look forward to with major anticipation. As a New Yorker, it’s wonderful to see the impact it has on the city,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“This year is especially exciting because I get to be a part of it as a juror,” she added.

De Niro founded the event with Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff to help revitalise the lower Manhattan area after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 – and he is proud to continue celebrating New York City as a major filmmaking centre.

“It’s great to see how much the festival has grown since we started it in 2002 and how it has impacted this neighbourhood,” he said.

The Tribeca Film Festival, which will host the world premiere of Woody Allen’s new movie ‘Whatever Works’, runs until May 3. (ANI)

David Duchovny, Tea Leoni get matching wedding ring tattoos

Washington, Apr 16 (ANI): Hollywood actors David Duchovny and Tea Leoni have decided to strengthen their love for one another by getting matching wedding ring tattoos.

The two had in October last year announced the end of their 11-year marriage, after Duchovny, 48, underwent a spell in rehab to treat sex addiction.

But it now seems that they have solved their differences, following their vacation together in March on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

“I hate wearing the metal because I bang it everywhere and hurt myself. We made a compromise and I said, ‘If I get a tattoo, can I take the ring off?’ She liked it and went out and got one for herself,” Contactmusic quoted Duchovny as telling Star magazine.

Duchovny, however, has decided to keep mum about what the tattoo means.

“It’s a phrase we say to each other but I don’t actually tell anybody. It’s AYSF. It stands for something,” he added. (ANI)

Hollywood stars pay tribute to Heath Ledger on death anniversary via new mag

Washington, Jan 16 (ANI): Hollywood actors, actresses, screenwriters and filmmakers who worked with late Aussie actor Heath Ledger, paid their tribute to him on his first death anniversary through a new 10-page U.S. magazine.

Mel Gibson, Julia Stiles and Monster’s Ball director Marc Forster joined in remembering the late actor, who had died from an accidental drug overdose last year in January 22.

The Entertainment Weekly tribute also features heartfelt words from British director Terry Gilliam, who was working with the actor on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died.

“He was a very old soul. When we were in Prague doing (The Brothers) Grimm, there was one night we went to see this gypsy band,” Contactmusic quoted Gilliam as telling magazine.

“Somehow his age came up in conversation. At that time, (co-star) Matt Damon was 32, and I always felt Heath was the same age, if not older. He said, ‘I’m 24.’ I said, ‘What? That’s not possible’.

“He had a kind of wisdom you only get from centuries of former life… Maybe he was part Aborigine somewhere down the line,” he stated.

And Gibson, who worked with his fellow Aussie on The Patriot, pays tribute to Ledger’s parenting skills to daughter Matilda.

“Fatherhood changes you. Some guys, it doesn’t. But, with Heath, it was going to,” Gibson said.

And the actor’s Four Feathers co-star and friend Wes Bentley admits that he was impressed with Ledger’s taste in music.

“He always knew what to play at 5am: Neil Young, Old Man. He’d find the right time for it and sneak it in,” he added. (ANI)

Heath Ledger may have suffered from bipolar disorder

London, Hollywood actor Heath Ledger might have endured a long battle with Bipolar disorder, according to a new biography.

The book ‘Heath: A Family’s Tale says that the disease might be genetic as the late actor’s uncle Haydn was recently diagnosed with the Bipolar disorder, a category of mood disorders.

Heath, who died due to accidental overdose of prescription drug, might have had swings between euphoria and despair due to the same disorder, according to the biography by Janet Fife-Yeomans.

“I don’t mind people knowing I have bipolar disorder and it’s a shame that it took this long to be diagnosed,” News Of The world quoted uncle Haydn as telling the author.

The condition can be linked to traumas such as failed relationships.

Heath was devastated by his split last year with long-term love Michelle Williams, his Brokeback Mountain co-star and mother of their daughter Matilda. (ANI)
