Avalanche consolidate playoff spot with Sharks win

(Reuters) – The Colorado Avalanche scrapped to a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks in overtime on Sunday to move into sole possession of the eighth, and final, playoff place in the Western Conference.

Sports

John-Michael Liles scored the game-winner at 2:59 in overtime to help the Avalanche snap a four-game losing streak. Colorado now have 91 points, two ahead of ninth-placed Calgary, with four matches remaining.

“It’s the biggest win of the year,” Avalanche coach Joe Sacco told reporters after Liles re-directed Ryan Wilson’s shot into the net for the winner.

“And then the next game will be the biggest for us.”

Colorado (42-29-7) trailed 2-0 in the first period but scored four unanswered goals beginning with Kyle Quincey’s wrist shot in the first, two second-period goals from Peter Mueller and a Paul Stastny power-play conversion just 20 seconds into the third.

Sharks winger Patrick Marleau notched his 43rd goal of the season to cut the deficit before Joe Pavelski tied the game for San Jose (48-20-11), who had their Western Conference lead cut to two points after the Chicago Blackhawks beat Calgary 4-1.

Dany Heatley assisted on both goals in the third for San Jose, who have lost two of three while trying to secure the top seed in the conference for the playoffs.

Team points leader Joe Thornton returned to the lineup from a lower body injury and added two assists while Douglas Murray and Jamie McGinn opened the scoring for the Sharks.

San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made 35 saves as Colorado out-shot the Sharks 40-22, but he could not hold off the determined Avalanche, who finished last in the West last season.

“All along we said we controlled our own destiny,” Liles said. “If we continue to win hockey games, then we’re going to put ourselves in (a) good position.”

Younis Khan wants his son to be a champion squash player

Karachi, Sep.10 (ANI): They say fathers always want their sons to follow in their footsteps, but Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan does not want to see his son playing cricket for the country.

Instead of pursuing a vastly lucrative career in cricket, Khan wants his son to become a world class squash player.

“I want my son to become a squash champion and once again take our country on the top in that sport,” Khan said.

Khan regretted that Pakistan, which once produced several champion squash players like Hashim Khan, Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan, now does not have any squash player to carry forward the legacy of the erstwhile world champions.

“We have won so many laurels in squash in the past and it’s a pity that we are no more the champions. I would appeal my countrymen to encourage their children to take up games like squash, hockey and football. As for myself, I would love to see my son become a world champion in squash,” The News quoted Khan, as saying.

In an interview with a private television channel, Khan revealed that he also loved football and said ‘the global sport’ was his favourite.

Khan said he would love to participate in a football match involving both the national cricket and football team.

“It’s a great idea and I would love to have cricket and football matches against the national football players as soon as we can get time for it,” he said. (ANI)

Woman boxer Laishram Sarita Devi crowned with Arjuna Award

Thoubal (Manipur), Aug 29 (NAI): Laishram Sarita Devi, a seven times gold medallist in various international women’s boxing tourneys has been bestowed with the Arjuna Award, India’s prime honour for sportspersons. arita Devi (24) hails from Thoubal in Manipur.

Inspired by the feats of Muhmmad Ali, she took up this manly sport in 2000 and literally eclipsed the swiftness of the boys and even pugilists elder to her.

This is evident from the fact that in the very subsequent year, she was called to represent India in the fist Asian Women’s Boxing Championship staged in Bangkok.

“I am very happy with my achievement. I had been nominated for the award three years ago but I did not get it. I feel it’s a little late now but I am happy to receive this award. It comes as an encouragement for me to perform better in future,” she said.

She was encouraged by her family members, which could be a key factor to her success in the ring. When we heard that she is getting Arjuna Award, I was filled with unusual emotion to learn finally the fruit of her labour has paid off. I am really proud of her,”said Thoiba Singh, husband of Sarita Devi.

She has numerous achievements to her credit. After winning a silver medal in her maiden appearance in the international arena (Asian Women’s Boxing Championship), Sarita has participated in fifteen more tournaments, winning seven gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

She works out for five to six hours a day such as sparring, punching bags and skipping to stay trim and be ever ready for a bout in the ring.

She has a desire to participate in the Olympic Games and hopes her dreams will come true.

This recent achievement of Sarita Devi is bound to lend a boost to the sporting talents in Manipur, which are abundant in several indoor and outdoor games such as boxing, judo, weightlifting, soccer, hockey and polo among others. (ANI)

PHF to take legal action against Mansoor for defaming federation

Lahore, July 14 (ANI): The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) will take legal action against former Olympian Mansoor Ahmad for defaming the national federation.

“We are serving him a legal notice to pay Rs 100 million for defaming the PHF and its officials through his defamatory statements,” a spokesman for the PHF said on Monday.

He said Mansoor had a ‘notorious past’ and was convicted in a fraud and theft case.

“For this very reason he was dismissed from Pakistan Customs,” the spokesman added.

The PHF official said Mansoor was the only Olympian in the entire hockey fraternity who had a ‘dark’ past.

He said Mansoor, in his recent outburst, had levelled baseless allegations against PHF general secretary Muhammad Asif Bajwa and on the working of the PHF, which was violation of the code of conduct.

“The PHF will take disciplinary and legal action.”

He alleged that Mansoor was appointed as coordinator of the PHF hockey academies and his services were terminated recently for his ‘illegal activities’ to obtain USA visas for himself and few other persons.

“Such activities cannot be tolerated and we will be providing sufficient evidence to the concerned authorities to take him to the task,” he concluded. (ANI)

The list of 10 bizarre things that students leave behind

London, Jun 25 (ANI): A list of bizarre things that British students leave behind in their rooms includes snakes and white rabbits among other things.

The audit carried out by British student accommodation provider Unite has revealed that trophy traffic cones and road signs are no longer the must-have collectibles.

Instead, students are leaving behind a more eclectic group of items when they leave their digs at the end of the year, and pets were among the unusual items left behind.

Unite found a pair of budgies, a six-foot snake, and a white rabbit that had been left behind by their owners.

Among the other items left behind were frozen chicken feet, an inflatable pool, which was filled with water, a scuba diving suit and a pole-dancing pole.

The most common items left behind were mobile phone chargers (24 per cent), while almost one in five (19 per cent) of the items found were text books and one in ten (11 per cent) were iPods.

“After a year of working hard and playing hard, it is no surprise that students forget to pack everything at the end of term – and what they leave behind never fails to surprise us,” the Telegraph quoted Nathan Goddard, Unite sales and marketing director, as saying.

“From the risque to the ridiculous, we often wonder how these items make it into their rooms in the first place,” he added.

Unite, which has properties in 23 UK cities and towns said it tries to reunite students with their belongings.

Unclaimed items are donated to charity or recycled and all pets are found a good home.

Rachel Hunter’s toyboy lover ‘dumps her two months before wedding’

London, Jun 24 (ANI): Brit singer Rod Stewart’s ex-wife Rachel Hunter has been dumped by her toyboy fianci Jarret Stoll – less than two months before they were due to get married, it has emerged.

Stoll, 26, an ice hockey star, had walked out on the 39-year-old New Zealand model without giving her a reason, and had emailed guests that the ceremony, which was to be held on August 14, has been cancelled.

“She is absolutely devastated. Everything was in place for their wedding – she had the venue, the designer dress, the guest list,” the Sun quoted a source close to Hunter as saying.

“She has absolutely no idea why Jarret has done this. It sounds like it could be a classic case of cold feet. He is a fair bit younger than her,” the source said.

Her daughter Renee, 17, and son Liam, 14, are said to be “in pieces” at the break-up – especially Liam who is a keen ice hockey player.

Stoll had proposed last August, and he and Hunter had bought a 2.2million pounds home in Hermosa Beach, California, and were due to tie the knot in front of guests including Michelle Pfeiffer and Sharon Stone. (ANI)

Indian hockey team gears up for Asia cup

Bhopal, May 1 (ANI): Indian Hockey team, which is preparing hard for the upcoming Asia Cup, do not want to let go their winning spirit which they gained from their win in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup after a hiatus of 13 years.

India’s hockey team posted a spectacular 3-1 win over Malaysia Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on April 12, 2009.

Team coach said they would take each match on its merit and will make strategy to tackle it accordingly.

“It is very essential to win three points compared to practicing for Pakistan or Korea. Sometimes small teams like Bangladesh can also create problems for us. Like once Egypt has done. So, we will strategize match by match. Depending on whom we face in semifinal, we will decide on the strategy,” said Harendra Singh, coach-in-charge.

Asia cup hockey tournament will be played from May 9 to 16 in Malaysian city of Kuantan.

Teams in the tournament have been divided into two pools with Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka in pool A and Pakistan, India, China and Bangladesh in Pool B.

Indian hockey has been on decline since the 1970s, coinciding with the game’s switch to artificial turf with more emphasis on power, speed and accuracy than deft dribble. By R C Sahu(ANI)

“From the last time its better and well organised. There are stalls from other countries. This way, they are going to learn from us and we are going to learn from them,” said Linda.

Canadian vote could decide carbon tax’s future

British Columbia campaign officially starts

* Seen as test on economy and carbon tax

* Candidates must compete with NHL playoffs

By Allan Dowd

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 14 (Reuters) – Politicians on Canada’s Pacific Coast hit the campaign trail on Tuesday for the start of a provincial election that could decide the fate of North America’s first comprehensive carbon tax.

British Columbia is the first province to hold an election since Canada slid into recession, although polls indicate the governing Liberal Party is headed for another victory over the New Democratic Party when voters cast their ballots on May 12.

NDP leader Carole James called on voters to punish Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberals for mishandling the economic downturn, which has pushed unemployment in the province’s largely resource-based economy to 7.4 percent.

“British Columbia has had the worst job losses in the country. We need a change,” James told a rally near Vancouver.

The Liberals, who have governed the province since 2001, say the New Democrats mismanaged British Columbia’s finances when the economy was doing well in the 1990s and cannot be trusted to handle it now when times are tough.

“British Columbians know this election is critical to their future and that the progress we have made could all be lost in a heartbeat if they make the wrong choice on May 12,” Campbell said in a written statement.

A survey released by research firm Mustel Group showed the right-of-center Liberals with 52 percent support among decided voters, compared with 35 percent for the left-leaning NDP and 12 percent for the Green Party.

The campaign has created an unusual dilemma for the province’s environmental activists. They have traditionally sided with the New Democrats but now object to the NDP’s plans to scrap the carbon tax launched by the Liberals last year.

The tax applies to nearly all fossil fuels, including gasoline and home heating fuel, starting at C$10 per tonne of carbon emissions in 2008 and increasing by C$5 a tonne annually for four years.

The tax became a lightning rod for criticism when it was launched in July, when energy prices were already at record highs and drivers began paying an additional 2.41 Canadian cents on a litre of gasoline (about 9.13 cents per U.S. gallon).

The NDP’s “Axe the Tax” campaign coincided with a rise in the polls that briefly had them neck and neck with the Liberals in November, garnering particular support in rural areas of the province.

The NDP plans to replace the carbon tax with other caps on emissions aimed at industrial sources, but environmental groups complain that will do little to reduce greenhouse gasses and could end up costing jobs.

British Columbia is already part of the Western Climate Initiative, a coalition of U.S. states and Canadian provinces that have agreed to adopt a cap and trade system for carbon emissions starting in 2012.

Candidates from both main parties will also have to compete for voters attention with a high-profile, non-political distraction: the Vancouver Canucks begin their National Hockey League playoffs this week in a quest for the Stanley Cup.

New York Islanders secure top pick in NHL draft

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York Islanders won the NHL draft lottery on Tuesday, securing the number one overall pick in the June 26 draft.

The Islanders finished the regular season with the NHL’s worst record (26-47-9) and beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings in the lottery for the top pick in Montreal in June.

They are expected to choose either high-scoring Canadian forward John Tavares or Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman.

Tavares, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s top-ranked North American player, is the Ontario Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer with 215 goals and 218 assists and helped Canada to gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 junior world championships.

Hedman, who plays for Modo in the Swedish Elite league, is the top ranked European skater.

McCain fails to name Palin in GOP star list

New York, Apr.15 (ANI): Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain seems convinced that his former running mate Sarah Palin is not in a list of dynamic governors in the country.

On Monday’s “Tonight Show,” Jay Leno asked the Arizona Senator to name the new guiding lights of the Republican Party, and McCain was quick to rattle off a list of “young, dynamic” governors around the country. alin wasn’t one of them.

McCain singled out Louisana Governor Bobby Jindal, Florida Governor Charlie Christ, Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney.

In case anyone missed his conspicuous omission of Palin, McCain then added, “And I’ve left out somebody’s name, and I’m gonna hear about it.”

Rumors swirled late in the campaign of sniping between McCain’s people and Palin, some of it over 150,000 dollars worth of designer duds, plus hair and make-up, purchased for Palin and her family and paid for out of GOP National Committee coffers.

After news of the pricey makeover leaked out, both camps blamed the other for what amounted to a minor public relations fiasco, timed as it was with the eruption of a full-blown recession and contrasting sharply with Palin’s populist image as an average “hockey mom.”
As recently as early April, Palin’s husband Todd called the decision to spring for the clothes “out of our control,” laying the blame solely on McCain’s strategists in an interview with Men’s Journal.

According to the New York Daily News, there were also reports of McCain aides calling Palin a “diva” and a “whack job” as the campaign wound to an close.

Since the election, Palin has defended herself against charges that her presence sank the Republican ticket. Less than a week after the votes were tallied, she said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, “I think the economic collapse had a heckuva lot more to do with the campaign’s collapse than me personally.”

McCain may not share her conviction. (ANI)

Victorious Indian hockey team returns home

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Loud applause greeted members of the Indian hockey team on their arrival here on Monday night after their resplendent win at the Azlan Shah Cup tournament in Malaysia.

Crediting the victory to team effort, Sandeep Singh, the team’s captain said, “It is the hard work put in by our team which we are seeing now. It is a joint effort of our coaches and the team members.”

The coach of the team termed the victory a good beginning for Indian hockey.

“This is a first step. We have long way to go. This victory has taught us many lessons, which are important. This win is a good beginning for Indian hockey,” said Harendra Singh, a team coach.

The team led by captain Sandeep Singh beat Malaysia 3-1 in the final on April 12 to register their fourth title win after 13 years.

India last won the tournament in 1995. (ANI)

India lift 18th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, beat Malaysia 3-1

Ipoh (Malaysia), Apr 12 (ANI): Making a superb display of speed and execution of planning on the field, the Indian hockey team on Sunday beat the host Malaysia team by 3-1 to lift the 18th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup here.

India won this prestigious tournament after 13 years of gap on Sunday.

Sunday’s win made India a champion for the fourth time, the previous three occasions being 1985, 1991 and 1995. India had made it to the finals on other two occasions in 2006 and 2008. India had lost 1-2 to Argentina in last year’s final.

On Sunday, Arjun Halappa put India into lead as early in the 8th minute of the game but the happiness in the Indian camp were short-lived as Azlon Mizron restored parity for Malaysia.

Prabhjot Singh scored the second goal in the 20th minute. While Shivender Singh scored the third goal for his team.

On Saturday, India had overcome its arch-rival Pakistan with 2-1 score, ensuring a contest with Malaysia in their sixth final in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

The Malaysians, on the other sided, had booked their third berth in Sunday’s final by drawing 1-1 with New Zealand. In 1985, they had lost the final match to India and in 2007 to Australia.

On Saturday, it was skipper Sandeep Singh’s two goals against Pakistan, which helped India its victory over Pakistan hockey team. India needed a draw to reach finals. ndian players certainly had a psychological edge for the final match, as they had already crushed Malaysia 3-0 in the league stage.

The two teams had last played each other in the final in 1985. This was Malaysia’s third final in the prestigious competition. Malaysia had drawn 1-1 with New Zealand to reach the finals this time.(ANI)

Indian ice hockey team felicitated for wining IIHF gong

Leh, Apr 7 (ANI): In a rare honour, the Indian Ice Hockey team was felicitated on its return from Abu Dhabi (UAE), where it participated in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Challenge Cup of Asia.

Ajit Kumar Sahu, Deputy Commissioner, Leh in Jammu and Kashmir did the honours.

This was the first time that the ice hockey team led by Tundup Namgyal had gone abroad to participate in an event of such a scale.

Terming the step as a beginning, Gyal Wangyal, the team manager, said, “More than the performance, the exposure which the players have got has been good. We would have been playing here at district level. We would not have been aware about the rules of the game nor the manner in which the game is played or the approach of the coach to instruct the players.”

Ice hockey as a sport is popular in the region, but due to lack of adequate facilities its development and progress has been slow.

This first ever-international exposure has acted as a morale booster for both the players and the game.

“When we played our first match against Thailand, we did not know how the game was played. But in the 2nd and 3rd match, we played much better scoring a goal and played a very good game against Macau,” said Aman Ali, player of the team.

The players are hopeful that the sport from here would only get better. With the formation of a District Olympic Association, things should get better from here. (ANI)

Protests mark attempt to change Malaysia’s `Little India’

Klang (Malaysia), Apr.4 (ANI): Attempts to change the name `Little India’ in Malaysia’s Klang area have led to protests by both traders and residents.

The Klang Municipal Council had put up a signboard renaming the famous field Laman Sukan Majlis Perbandaran Klang. But they had to remove it yesterday.

The original name for the 0.9ha field has become synonymous with Little India.

Chetty Padang is named after the Chettiar Hindu temple there and the community that lives in the vicinity.

Before the Pandamaran sports complex was built, it was the venue for many important hockey games.

The controversy comes on the heels of another proposal to change the name of Little India to Medan Kelana. The council dropped the idea after a huge public outcry, the New Strait Times reports.

Locals fear the two incidents are part of an attempt to erase the identity of the Little India area. The authorities have denied this. (ANI)

Indian Hockey team geared up for Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy

Bhopal, Apr 2 (ANI): Indian hockey team is geared up to make a mark at the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy to be played in Ipoh, Malaysia from April 5 to 12 after undergoing rigorous practice session in Bhopal.

Indian Hockey coach Harendra Singh said that the five-nation event comprising of New Zealand, Pakistan, Egypt, Malaysia and India, would be a build-up for the Asia Cup and also to improve the international rankings.

“The team who would be playing Azlan Shah will be able to develop a strategy for the Asia Cup. Since many good teams like New Zealand will be there so team would be motivated to play well. The one who one wins Asia Cup would directly qualify for the World Cup. But since we are the host of World Cup, we are directly qualified for it, but if we win Asia Cup, then we would be able to improve our ranking,” said Harendra Singh.

He said that he wanted to take the Indian team that currently ranks ninth among hockey playing countries, to top-six nations by then end of this year.

The hockey Asia Cup would be held at Kuantan, the capital of the State of Pahang from May 9 to 16.

The team is confident after the stunning performance in New Zealand, where India won the hockey Test series 2-0.

Team captain Sandeep Singh also expressed confidence in the team and said that the team would be going with the strategy to win.

“We have been undergoing good practice session for last two weeks. Team is working hard. Our strategy would be to play well, reach the final and win it,” Sandeep Singh.

Indian team ended up as runner-up last year the Azlan Shah Hockey Cup.

Indian hockey has been in decline since the 1970s, coinciding with the game’s switch to artificial turf with more emphasis on power, speed and accuracy than deft stickwork.

Cricket became a national obsession following India’s surprise victory in the 1983 World Cup, while interest in other sports dwindled due to a lack of success at international level. (ANI)
