Lara Bingle’s ex manager may now sign up Oz topless fire-fighting heroine

Melbourne, May 18 (ANI): After being dumped by Aussie model Lara Bingle, celebrity agent Max Markson is set to sign up Northern Territory’s topless fire-fighting heroine Tash Bennett.

The high-profile agent is known for helping reality TV stars cash in on their fifteen minutes of fame.

He was also recently hired – and fired – but Australian cricketer Michael Clarke”s ex-fiancee Lara Bingle.

Bennett, who put the safety of her neighbours ahead of her own modesty last week after she battled a blaze at a neighbours house – topless, said she has not decided whether she would sign up with Markson and was having someone look over the contract.

The 27-year-old fitness instructor said Markson”s offer could be a big opportunity for her.

“I would love to do something else. In Darwin, I was working in the gym as a casual and I did personal training on the side, but it wasn”t long term for me. If there is more opportunity for me, I will sign,” News.com.au quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Oz woman saves apartment building from going up in flames – topless!

Melbourne, May 11 (ANI): A woman from Darwin has been hailed as a heroine after she put her own safety and modesty aside to save an apartment building from going up in flames – topless.

Fitness instructor Tash Bennett was sunbaking by the pool of the Alatai Apartments in Darwin city on May 6 when a nearby palm tree caught fire.

“I was just lying there when some ash fell on top of me. I wasn”t really paying attention because I was listening to my iPod,” the Courier Mail quoted her as saying.

Bennett, who raced to reception for help before rushing back to the pool to use the fire hose, only realised that she was topless after she battled the blaze for five minutes and then looked down at herself.

“I was pretty red faced on the day, having to hold myself while running to reception. I was sunbaking. I wasn”t exactly prepared,” she explained.

“But you”ve got to put out the fire before you deal with that,” she stated.

After the blaze, Bennett resumed her sunbaking while she waited for the fire crew to arrive.

Her husband, Daniel McNamee said he was proud of his wife”s quick action in the emergency.

“Apparently the flame was pretty high. It could have taken out the building,” he said.

“She was just lying there thinking, ”it”s getting pretty hot here”.

“It was only after the fire was out that she looked down and realised that she was topless. At one stage she had quite an audience, just having a laugh,” he revealed.

One witness, Johnny McCoy said Bennett had a full audience of residents while she battled the blaze.

“For the record, she was smoking hot herself, but provided all the boys a pretty awesome sight for an otherwise typical Thursday,” he said.

“Once she had the blaze under control, she then got her bikini situation under control and put everything back where it should be,” he added. (ANI)

Disney to rebrand Rapunzel because of its “gender-specific” name

London, Mar 10 (ANI): Disney is all set to rename Rapunzel, the much-loved fairytale, because it failed to appeal to boys.

The studio”s forthcoming version of the Brothers Grimm story will be renamed “Tangled” after market research showed that boys do not like films with girls” names in the title.

According to Disney bosses, the “gender-specific” title of its latest offering, ‘The Princess and the Frog’ was the reason why the film could not do wonders at the box office.

The flaxen-haired heroine of Tangled will still bear the name Rapunzel when the 3-D film is released in November.

“We did not want to be put in a box. Some people might assume it”s a fairytale for girls when it”s not. We make movies to be appreciated and loved by everybody,” the Telegraph quoted Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, as saying of the title change.

The ‘Princess and the Frog’ would have fared better “if it wasn”t pre-judged by its title”, Catmull told the Los Angeles Times.

In their effort to woo the boys, Disney has made the prince, who finds Rapunzel imprisoned in her tower, Flynn Rider— a swashbuckling character who bears more than a passing resemblance to Errol Flynn.

“It”s a really fresh, smart take on the Rapunzel story. In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. We”re having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who”s seen it all, with Rapunzel, who”s been locked away in a tower for 18 years,” said Roy Conli, the film”s producer. (ANI)

South Africa Sports Minister warns of World War III over Semanya

London, Sep 12 (ANI): The South African government has threatened a “third world war” if the International Association of Athletics Federation bans champion runner Caster Semenya over a test that shows her to be a hermaphrodite, a person with both female and male sexual characteristics.

The IAAF commissioned a gender test on the teenager after her performance levels improved remarkably in the build-up to the competition.

The leaked report that a gender verification test had found the 18 year-old to be a hermaphrodite with no womb was greeted with outrage in South Africa on Friday, with politicians, sports officials and Semenya’s relatives decrying the teenager’s public humiliation.

On Friday the IAAF attempted to diffuse the controversy by refusing to confirm the medical reports, insisting that it would make official comment until after the test results had been verified by a panel of scientific experts.

But the prospect of the teenager being disqualified from future female races drew a furious response from South African Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile, The Telegraph reports.

“I think it would be the third world war. We will go to the highest levels in contesting such a decision. She’s a woman, she remains our heroine. We must protect her,” he said.

Semenya was due to run in a 4km race at the national cross-country championships in Pretoria on Saturday, but was withdrawn by her coach Michael Seme on the grounds that she was “not feeling well”.

The IAAF is expected to disqualify the South African from future events and advise her to have surgery because her condition carries grave health risks, The Daily Telegraph report claims.

A source closely involved with the IAAF tests said Semenya had internal testes-the male sexual organs, which produce testosterone.

“There certainly is evidence Semenya is a hermaphrodite. But the trouble is the IAAF now has the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs. Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book, no question of a challenge to the findings,” the source said. (ANI)

S. African athlete Semenya tries to gloss over gender controversy

Johannesburg, Sep.9 (ANI): South African athlete Caster Semenya has completed her transformation from gender troubled sporting champion into national celebrity with a photo shoot in the country’s leading gossip magazine.

While the controversy rumbles on over whether the teenage runner is really male or female, her handlers have sought to end the debate with the aid of a costume change, make up and some studio lights.

With the front cover headline: “Wow, look at Caster now!” You magazine proudly boasts that it has turned her from “power girl” into “glamour girl” and apparently, “she loves it”.

Inside, the 800 m world champion – whose gender is being tested by the international athletics authorities – says the whole issue is a joke.

“It doesn’t upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. I am who I am and I’m proud of myself,” The Sun quoted Semenya, as saying.

In the magazine, Semenya poses in skinny jeans, stilettos and a black and white evening dress.

News that the athlete would have to undergo testing was leaked before the 800m final at the world championships in Berlin, putting her under enormous pressure.

Following her victory, the ruling African National Congress seized upon her case to score political points, with left-wing firebrands such as Winnie Madikizela Mandela and ANC Youth League president Julius Malema accusing the athletics authorities of racism.

They have also sought to use Semenya to stir up populist feeling against what is seen as the right wing of the ANC, represented by Trevor Manuel, President Jacob Zuma’s planning chief.

Semenya received a heroine’s welcome in her home village in South Africa’s impoverished Limpopo province at the end of August, with VIPs and a 200-strong crowd singing a version of the Communist Party anthem, which included the lyrics: “My mother was a kitchen girl, my father was a garden boy, that’s why I’m a champion, that’s why I’m a champion.”

The cover shoot has reignited the debate in South Africa over the athlete’s appearance, with radio talk shows inundated with callers.

The 18-year-old has refused to be drawn on what she is going through at present, telling the magazine: “I don’t want to talk about the tests – I’m not even thinking about them.” (ANI)

Meyer’s vampire saga puts Wuthering Heights on top of classics chart

London, Aug 28 (ANI): American author Stephenie Meyer’s vampire saga has helped put Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ at the top of the Waterstone’s classics chart.

Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ has made Bronte’s novel become famous among teenage readers, with the story highlighting ‘Wuthering Heights’ as being the central character’s favourite book.

In Eclipse, the third book in Meyer’s series, Bella Swan, the chaste love of vampire Edward Cullen, makes repeated references to Bronte’s masterpiece.

She compares the vampire to turbulent Heathcliff, as she quotes Bronte’s heroine Cathy.

“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger,” the Telegraph quoted Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, as telling Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson.

“By highlighting Wuthering Heights in her novels, Stephenie Meyer has introduced Emily Bronte to the Twilight generation,” Sarah Clarke, children’s books buyer for Waterstone’s, said.

HarperCollins, the publisher, has even printed a new “gothic” jacket for Wuthering Heights, similar to the look of Meyer’s books, to attract her fans.

It has sold more than 10,000 copies in Waterstone’s booksellers’ stores since May, more than twice as many as the traditional Penguin Classics edition.

A spokesman for the chain said that it was the first time Wuthering Heights had topped its classic books chart since it started compiling such figures in 1998. It has been number one in the classics chart for four months.

“I don’t think a vampire’s recommendation has ever sent a book to number one before,” Simon Robertson, the company’s classics buyer, said.

The surge underlines how important Meyer now is in the British book market. (ANI)

‘Slumdog millionaire’s child star loses shanty home in demolition

Mumbai, May 20 (ANI): Shanty home of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire’s child star Rubina Ali was brought down by the civic authorities in Mumbai, an action which brought her family on road months after gaining a global appreciation.

Rubina’s house in a teeming slum was one of several settlements that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai.

Rubina was out with her aunt when the civic authority workers and the police landed at their house and asked them to vacate their house. Her father, when tried to protest the demolishing workers, was allegedly beaten up with sticks.

“My father tried to intervene and asked them how they can demolish our houses without even giving us notices, then they beat my father with sticks. My father had to go to the dispensary as his hand was swollen. These people continued demolishing our houses,” Rubina said.

According to the slum dwellers, they had been living there for past many years and the authorities had not given them any prior notice before carrying out the demolition work.

“The government and the politicians all know that poor people live here, the police should not trouble the poor like us… Why do they trouble us? We have been living here for many years,” said Munni Qureshi, Rubina’s mother.

Eight-year-old Rubina played baby Latika, the film’s heroine, in the rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.

Earlier this year, there was an outcry after pictures emerged of “Slumdog Millionaire’s” child stars living in squalor despite the movie’s box-office success and eight Academy Awards.

The film also sparked controversy for its name, deemed by some to be offensive to slum dwellers, and its treatment of the cast. Its depiction of the lives of poor Indians was dubbed “poverty porn” by sections of the media.

In February, the housing authority of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said they would give Rubina Ali and fellow child star Ismail new houses. (ANI)

EU sees no progress on global drug problem in past decade

Vienna – There was no evidence that the global drug problem has been reduced in the past decade, despite increased efforts to help addicts and fight traffickers, according to a study by the European Commission released Tuesday in Vienna.

Although the report did not contain recommendations, it painted a bleak picture of global drug policy, saying it “had no more than a marginal positive influence.”

The European Commission published its findings ahead of a meeting of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs starting Wednesday, which is expected to review the past decade and come up with a policy declaration for the next one.

“These findings show that the political declaration to be adopted in Vienna this week should not simply restate the objectives we adopted 10 years ago,” European Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot said in a statement, but should instead take an approach based on past evidence.

In 1998, the UN General Assembly pledged to “significantly reduce” the demand for and supply of illicit drugs by 2008.

Although the global situation had improved somewhat in richer countries, the drug problem has become more complex overall, the report said.

For example, drug prices have fallen by as much as 30 per cent since 1998 in most Western countries, the study found, despite tougher sentencing of cocaine and heroine dealers in some of the West’s drug markets.

Production and trafficking control policies had led to transfers of drug activities to other countries, such as the shift of Bolivian and Peruvian cocaine production to Colombia, the report said.

Drug treatment efforts did not reduce drug use, it said, as there were few effective prevention programmes.

However, the European Commission found that policies regarding health services for drug users were converging. It noted that countries such as China and Iran now allowed the use of substitute drugs for opiate addicts. (dpa)

Nausheen’s busy singing the K-queen’s praises

Nausheen’s busy singing the K-queen’s praises Nausheen Ali Sardar started her small screen career with Ekta Kapoor’s hit show ‘Kkusum’ and was hot property for long, thanks to the show.

But she had bigger dreams and five years ago she decided to stage a walk out as she felt she looked too young to play a mother. Some attitude, this female had.

She signed a movie called ‘Marathon’ which never saw the light of the day. She hoped there would be more and quite rightfully, there weren’t any. Good TV offers stopped as well.

Maybe, a lot of it can be attributed to the fact that the lady was too vain and never really realized her worth- what she was good enough for and what not.

Now she’s coming out in the open to praise her first mentor- television tsarina Ekta Kapoor.

She’s said, “Ekta is a very nice person. She deserves the credit for making a lot of people what they are today. Whether or not we talk or meet on a regular basis, Ekta makes it a point to send me a bouquet every year. Both of us share mutual respect. I will always be grateful to her.”

Ummm… looks like the lass’s aiming for a comeback to TV. Maybe the realization of not being heroine material finally dawns. Thank God for that one. -Sampurn Media
