‘Cowboy’ duck hunters anger landowner

A man has labelled a group of duck hunters “cowboys” after nearly being shot near his home in Nagambie at the weekend.

Ian Barfold says he walked to the front of his property near Kirwans Bridge when he heard gunshots nearby.

He says one pellet narrowly missed his head when he got to the jetty.

Mr Barfold says it is a residential area and people could have been hurt.

“I’ve got five grandkids and one on the way. We’ve got two beautiful labs, it’s like heaven for them down here, so they swim in the water quite a bit,” he said.

“You know there’s a lot of risk there.”

Muslims in Lucknow offer ‘Alvida Namaz’ before Eid

Lucknow, Sep 18(ANI): Muslims gathered in huge numbers at several mosques of Lucknow on Friday to offer the ‘Alvida Namaz’ marking the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan.

“We prayed to the Lord to raise the financial status of Muslims and also eradicate all their problems. In India, Hindu and Muslims have been living together for several centuries and we want them to be like this in future,” said Moulvi Faizul Rehman, an Islamic cleric at a mosque in Lucknow.

Highlighting the significance of the ‘Alvida Namaz’, Mohammad Sayeed, a Namazi said that it is the reason why thousands of Muslim from across the city gather to offer prayers.

“During Ramadan if we participate in the ‘Alvida Namaz’ and offer our prayers, then we get a reward for it and it will usher prosperity to us,” Sayeed said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri lunar calendar, commemorates the revelation of Quran, Islam’s holy book, and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and behaving charitably towards neighbours.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Considered auspicious for prayers, Muslims observe the month-long fasting named ‘Roza’.

They believe this secures them a place in heaven and also brings them face to face with Allah, the Almighty, on the day of ‘Kayamat’.

The end of Ramadan heralds the festival of Eid-ul-fitr. (ANI)

“Beyonce has asked her representatives to persuade Disney to develop the show into a film vehicle for her,” Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reports.

It adds: “If this comes to pass, she would take on, in musical form, the part Whoopi Goldberg creates in the 1992 ‘Sister Act’ film, although the stage version moves the action from the West Coast to Philadelphia.”

If the project is agreed upon, the Bodylicious hitmaker will play the role Deloris Van Cartier, which was previously portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg who is forced to dress up as a nun while fleeing a group of gangsters.

US actress Patina Miller is presently playing the lead character in the West End musical, which is co-produced by Whoopi.

Govt. backed ‘moral police’ Basij may be behind brutalities on Iranian protestors

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Basij, a semiofficial force of volunteers on whom the Iranian Government has relied for years to enforce a variety of laws and religious codes, have been accused of committing much of this week’s violence in the country.

The protests across Iran have been largely peaceful during the daytime, but Iranians shudder at the violence unleashed at night by Basijis, who indulge in beating, looting and sometimes gunning down protesters they tracked during the day.

One of the more dramatic video clips from Iran this week showed a man in an upper-floor window firing onto demonstrators outside a building near Tehran’s Azadi Square, killing at least one and wounding others, the Washington Post reports.

The building was a base for the Basij. Protesters say they have raided university dorms, beaten women and smashed their way into private homes. Many said they fear the Basij will be used to carry out even worse violence as the protests continue.

But although the Basiji fear looms large in the minds of their countrymen, Iranians and analysts said it is hard to pin down the number of members, their precise activities and whether they are all as loyal to hard-line government factions as many believe.

Joining the Basij can be as simple as going to a local mosque and receiving a membership card. Training and membership are often informal, said Gary Sick; an Iran expert at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, adding that some who carry out activities associated with the Basij may not be official members.

The term Basij means mobilization, and is originally referred to people too young or too old to join the army during Iran’s eight-year war against Iraq.

Then-leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called for 20 million Iranians-half the country’s population at the time-to volunteer. Many were preteens and teenagers who, swept up in a religion-infused passion, famously walked onto minefields, unarmed, allegedly with plastic keys to heaven around their necks.

After the war, they became known for enforcing moral codes. For years, the word “Basiji” has struck fear into the hearts of more secular Iranians, who know them as young men who stop them on the street for failing to follow the dress code or fraternizing with the opposite sex. (ANI)

Lennon to be honoured with Imagine pealing on Liverpool church bells

Washington, May 13 (ANI): John Lennon will be honoured with the performance of his peace anthem Imagine, on the bells of one of the churches in his native Liverpool, England.

Cathedral chiefs had given the thumbs up to the bellringers to perform the particular song despite the number’s controversial line, “Imagine there’s no heaven.”

“We recognise its power to make us think. As a cathedral we do not shrink from debate. We recognise the existence of other world views,” he added.

Feng Shui techniques are now popular in Punjab as many believe that they can help alleviate financial strain created by the global meltdown.

“There is little bit instability in our business. To stabilize it I need some help from Feng Shui, an expert can tell me and guide me. Also, my daughter has been facing lack on concentration in studies. I want to seek some help for her also,” said Ginni Singh, Feng Shui enthusiast.

As decorating and Feng Shui principles work well together, the products are in great demand by Indian companies.

“I have certain bankers who have a list of sick units with them. And somehow they are my clients. They don’t want sick units to exist in this area. So what happens is that they suggest to those people to come and meet me and get consultation from me. And, when I give them the calculation, sick units turn into healthy units in a week or two. They see the results,” said M.S.Walia, Consultant, Feng Shui.

Feng Shui products are popularly believed to enhance weak sectors in any place such as residential, commercial, office or institutional areas.

It’s a long-established Chinese tradition that things are placed in a special manner in a house or any other place, so that human beings are able to live harmoniously with their environment.

Church investigates posthumous baptism of Obama’s mother

New York, May 6 (ANI): The posthumous “baptism” of President Barack Obama’s mother Stanley Ann Dunham is being probed by a Mormon Church as a “serious breach” of religious code.

Records available with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints show that Dunham, who died in 1995, was baptized last June 4 in Provo, Utah, and received endowment, another sacrament, a week later.

“The offering of baptism to our deceased ancestors is a sacred practice to us and it is counter to Church policy for a Church member to submit names for baptism for persons to whom they are not related,” the politico quoted church’s spokeswoman Kim Farah in an emailed statement.

“The Church is looking into the circumstances of how this happened and does not yet have all the facts. However, this is a serious matter and we are treating it as such,” she added.

Mormons believe that souls cannot enter heaven without undergoing baptism and other sacraments, and that those sacraments can be given by proxy after death.

In the past, the practice of posthumous baptism caused controversy when Jewish groups raised objections to the baptism of victims of the Holocaust.

According to “doctrinal background” of the church, “well-meaning Church members sometimes bypass this instruction and submit the names of non-relatives for temple baptism.”

Others have submitted the names of unrelated famous or infamous people, or even wholly fictitious names. These rare acts are contrary to Church policy. (ANI)

40pct Brits believe in ghosts

London, April 13 (ANI): If a new study is anything to go by, 40 percent Britons believe in ghosts and over 50 percent in life after death.

The survey of more than 2,000 people has shown that seven out of ten people believe in the human soul and more than five out of ten believe in heaven.

ComRes, the company that conducted the research for Theos, found that one in five believes in astrology or horoscopes, one in ten in Tarot or fortune telling and nearly three in ten people believe in reincarnation.
According to the results, people are more superstitious than 60 years ago, at a time when orthodox religious belief is declining and secularism is on the rise.

“The enlightenment optimism in the ability of science and reason to explain everything ended decades ago. The extent of belief will probably surprise people, but the finding is consistent with other research we have undertaken,” Times Online quoted Paul Woolley, the director of Theos, as saying.

“The results indicate that people have a very diverse and unorthodox set of beliefs. Our research may point to a slight increase in scepticism about aspects of the supernatural over the last ten years,” he added. (ANI)

Between Earth and Heaven

Painting as a medium has the ability to transform the human soul and take one back to one’s own soul, discover oneself and be liberated,” says artist Santosh Mahadik about the first ever joint exhibition that he is holding with his colleague Sachin Akalekar on April 4.

The exhibition has been titled Themes from Earth and Heaven, as the paintings display Mahadik’s love for rustic themes, doors, windows, and rural backgrounds which symbolises the earth and the artist’s tryst with freedom, liberty, and a sense of feeling free, which symbolises heaven. “Basically it is an exhibition where a perscan find reflections of life,” says Sachin Akalekar, the second partner from the artist’s duo.

Both Akalekar and Mahadik have been painting commercially for the last three years. While Sachin has had his paintings showcased at art festivals in Dubai and Goa, Mahadik

has to his credit exhibitions by Art for Heart’s Sake. Speaking more about this Sachin says, “Basically we both have full time jobs, while I am a web designer,

Santosh owns his own advertising studio, in spite of that we find time to pursue our interests in painting, as a result even though we know a lot about the finer nuances of painting we prefer to bill ourselves as commercial artists.”

Beginning on April 4, the exhibition will conclude on April 10, and will be held at the Indiaart Gallery. A total of 45 paintings will be on display and also for sale. The prices of which range from Rs 5000 – 1 lakh.

“The exhibition is basically a gift to our teacher,

Prof D S Khatawkar who taught us everything that we know about paintings today. The paintings are done in acrylic and have a myriad range of hues. The sizes of the canvas range from 4 by 4 ft. to 4 by 7 ft. This contemporary style gives the rural ethos a sense of timelessness and along with it ushers in a belief that combines beauty and magic and takes the person back in time to his or her own soul,” adds Mahadik

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Late Brit celebrity Jade Goody will soon be venerated with a statue near her childhood home, if reports are to be believed.

“The council has plans for the Dickens Estate area where Jade grew up, and I’m sure we could do something,” the Mirror quoted Bob Skelly, chair of Bermondsey community council in South London, as saying.

Jade’s family and pals are delighted by the news.
