Former Miss Universe hopeful taking up career in boxing

Melbourne, June 4 (ANI): Former Miss Universe hopeful and Water Ski world champion Lauryn Eagle has revealed that she would like to take up professional boxing.

Eagle, 22, a beauty pageant regular, also revealed that her mother has no idea about her plans, and that if she did, she would definitely be disowned.

“She is going to be in shock. She doesn’t know a thing,” News.com.au quoted the model/athlete as telling the Daily Telegraph during a break in training at her gym in Sydney’s Sutherland shire.

“I would like to have a fight and I am sussing it out now.

“I know some might be critical because I am a girl but I can’t really let what other people think get to me. It’s something I want to do. I just love it,” she said.

Eagle hasn’t given up on another crack at Miss Universe either, a competition she withdrew from this year after a run-in with the law.

“The Miss Universe thing was just bad timing. But it is something I can do later on,” she said.

“Right now I am focused on my boxing training and my skiing,” she stated.

Her trainer Losh Matthews said: “You bet.”

“She is a young girl who has been through a lot but I have never seen anyone more committed or dedicated in my life,” he added. (ANI)

“I’m a great kisser,” the New York Post quoted him as boasting.

Ashley Cole ‘tries it on’ with blonde in a toilet!

London, May 16 (ANI): Ashley Cole ruined his marriage with his infidelities and it seems that despite claiming to be heartbroken, the footballer hasn”t changed at all.

Blonde beauty Lucy Phillips, 26, has revealed on Facebook that she recently chatted to the football star in Swanky Sundays at the Supper Club in Notting Hill, West London, and how he tried it on with her in a toilet cubicle, reports the Mirror.

Lucy said: “I was walking past the guys’ toilets when I saw a big group of blokes gathered round. I looked in and saw Ashley Cole holding court, and I went in.”

She says that Cole ‘then tried it on with her,’ but insisted that she ‘laughed it off,’ telling him she wasn’t interested and, after a few minutes, she exited the toilet.

Not to be deterred, Lucy said that Ashley gave it one more shot later in the evening.

“A few minutes after I saw him in the toilets I was with my best friend and we walked past Ashley and his mates. They saw us and called us over. I sat on the arm of Ashley’s chair and we chatted. After about 10 minutes we decided to leave and enjoy the rest of our night,” she said.

She added: “I definitely didn’t kiss him – I would remember if I had. I’m not like that at all.” (ANI)

Kiwi politician’s hidden camera sex scam

Wellington, May 16 (ANI): A former New Zealand mayoral candidate Pat Norris, accused of publishing a sex video he made of a woman staying at a house he owned, has defended himself saying he did what any other “red-blooded male” would have done.

The Nelson resident who contested the Kawerau mayoralty three years ago had allegedly pretended to fit motion sensors, when he installed cameras in the house.

The woman claimed he fitted one in the lounge, one in the kitchen, one in the dining room and one in her bedroom.

Police revealed that the cameras were set up in a way that allowed Norris to view the inside of the house in “real time” at “any time”.

“What he did was like physical abuse or worse. It”s a violation,” the New Zealand Herald quoted the woman, whose identity hasn’t been revealed, as saying.

However, Norris justified himself saying that the cameras were there to protect his investment in case it was broken into, not to spy on the woman.

He further asserted that he had printed them because the woman was sleeping with a married man whose wife had a right to see the images.

Norris, 53, is believed to be the first person charged with publishing material under anti-covert-filming laws brought in about five years ago.

He said he thought the new law was about “people using mobile phones in an up-skirt or down-blouse peeping toms scenario”.

He faces four charges of publishing an intimate visual recording and one of intentionally making an intimate visual recording. (ANI)

The ‘Mean Girls’ star was well-behaved when she showed up at the Valentino-sponsored fete for the Lincoln Center Institute at the Hudson Hotel this week.

Nielsen says Australians are T20 title contenders

Melbourne, May 5 (ANI): Lashing out at critics who consider Australia’s performance in Twenty20 to be dismal, coach Tim Nielsen has said that his team has performed well so far and are in the contention for the title.

“I get my neck out of joint a bit when people say Australia hasn”t done well in Twenty20 cricket. We haven’t won one of these tournaments, I agree,” Nielsen said.

“But there have only been two of them, we made the semi-finals of the first one and got knocked out poorly in England, but we”ve won our fair share in that amount of time,” The Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

“We just haven’t had the high-level of success that we’ve had in other forms of the game. But we’re learning, we’re getting better,” he said.

He said Australia demonstrated that in emphatic style with their 34-run victory against world champions Pakistan in their opening match of the tournament in St Lucia.

“I think it’s an experience thing. When we first started playing Twenty20 cricket we had them crammed at the end of a Test series or in between 10 one-dayers,” Nielsen said of Australia’s attitude towards Twenty20 cricket.

“I just think the fact we’ve been able to get the group together for a while, we’ve experienced IPL, we’ve had a couple of goes at this tournament now, I think we’re getting closer and getting better at it,” he added. (ANI)

Alexandra Burke’s mum ‘accuses her of failing to support family financially’

London, May 03 (ANI): Alexandra Burke’s mother is said to have accused her daughter of not supporting her family financially since she won ‘The X Factor’ in 2008.

The star has subsequently enjoyed two chart-topping singles, as well as a number one album since then and her mother Melissa alleges Alexandra hasn”t “given her a penny”.

“Alex owes it all to me. She would never have won The X Factor if it hadn”t been for me – my experience, my tuition, my guidance,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling the Sunday Mirror.

“She”s rich, but we”re poor. She hasn”t given me a penny and I”m too proud to ask. But considering her win was a team effort, I certainly deserve some.” (ANI)

Lee could return in June, says his physio

Sydney, April 29 (IANS) Australian pace spearhead Brett Lee is ‘shattered’ by his latest injury but he could return to the side by June, team physio Alex Kountouris says.

The 33-year-old paceman broke down with a strain of the pronator teres muscle in his right forearm during Tuesday’s World Twenty20 warm-up game against Zimbabwe in St Lucia.

‘He was very disappointed, gutted,’ Kountouris was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Lee will be replaced by Ryan Harris who is preparing to board a flight from Brisbane to the Caribbean.

Lee heads to Sydney for more scans to assess his recovery time, which Kountouris says could be five weeks.

‘If he wants to come back from this he can,’ Kountouris says.

‘The common factor (in Lee’s injuries) is he has got to come back and he has got to do something that is very difficult to do at the best of times and he’s trying to do it with a body that is being rehabilitated.’

‘It’s whether he wants to keep doing it and so far he has It’s (injury) serious enough to send him home, but I think as a long-term injury it shouldn’t be that serious,’ he said.

Lee hasn’t represented Australia since a one-day game against India in October 2009.

His past two Australian summers have been ruined by ankle and elbow surgery. He also failed to play a Test on the 2009 Ashes tour after suffering a side strain and has since retired from the five-day game.

He was unable to complete his Indian Premier League this year because of a fractured thumb.

Rooney bags Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year award

London, Apr 26 (ANI): England’s ace striker Wayne Rooney has been voted player of the year by his peers in the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Rooney, who has scored 34 goals this season, beat off competition from Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Manchester City forward Carlos Tévez.

“It’s a great feeling to win because it”s voted for by the players. It’s a great honour and I’m really proud,” Rooney, 24, said.

Aston Villa’s James Milner won the young player of the year award.

Rooney has improved his game tremendously at Old Trafford this season after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The 24 year-old was anxious to pay credit to Ferguson’s role in his development and backed the Scot to continue in charge at Old Trafford for many seasons to come, The Telegraph reports.

“Sir Alex has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players. It’s great to see that he’s pushing 70 and hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sure he’ll be here for a long time yet,” he said. (ANI)

Shoaib Akhtar impresses chief selector at Pentagular Cup

Karachi, April 22 (IANS) Discarded Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has catapulted himself in a perfect position to make yet another international comeback with a lethal spell in a leading domestic cricket tournament here Wednesday night.

Shoaib, 34, bowled at a fiery pace and finished with six for 52 to guide Federal Areas Leopards to devour Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Panthers by 77 runs in the Pentangular Cup at the National Stadium.

His brilliant showing forced Pakistan chief selector Mohsin Hasan Khan to say the selection committee will seriously consider Shoaib for a twin series against Australia and England in England this summer if he continued to bowl like this at the domestic level.

The enigmatic pacer is himself very pleased with his return to form and has declared that he would continue pushing for a recall in the national team.

Shoaib, who hasn’t played in international cricket for quite a while, said that he has regained full fitness and is looking to prove his mettle by continuing doing well on the domestic circuit.

‘I’m hoping to make a comeback during the tour of England,’ he said. ‘There is plenty of domestic cricket left before our teams goes to England which is why I’m confident of proving my form and fitness,’ he stressed.

Shoaib said that playing in the 1999 World Cup final in England remains the most cherished moment of his international career, adding that he wants to help Pakistan win the World Cup next year.

‘I want to play in next year’s World Cup and hope that Pakistan will win it,’ he said.

Shoaib was rejected as a spent force by national selectors after failing to impress much on his last international comeback almost a year ago in a one-dayer against Australia in Abu Dhabi.

Since then, the pacer has shed a lot of weight and has looked pretty sharp in the two Pentangular matches he has played so far. ‘I just want to play for Pakistan and am working hard for it,’ he said.

Three-way race for Liberal deputy

The South Australian Opposition’s water spokesman, Mitch Williams, has confirmed he will contest the Liberal deputy leadership.

He will join former leader Iain Evans in the race to replace incumbent Steven Griffiths when the party meets tomorrow.

Mr Williams says he has what it takes for the position.

“The person who aspires to be a deputy wants to give the leader of the party 110 per cent support,” he said.

“The deputy also needs to be somebody who can perform very well on the floor of the House and the deputy leader also has to work the corridors and make sure the party room is working together.

“In my experience in the House, I think I would perform better in the House than Steven.

“That’s no criticism of Steven, it’s not something that you gain without years of experience. I’ve had that, Steven hasn’t.”

Robert Pattinson says he’d love to star in a romantic comedy

London, March 29 (ANI): British actor Robert Pattinson has revealed that he’s desperate to star in a romantic comedy.

The Twilight star has, however, claimed that he hasn”t found a perfect script.

“I”d love to, but they are always just so rubbish – I mean like, I”d absolutely love to do it, but I”ve literally never read a good rom-com script,” the Mirror quoted him as telling GMTV in an interview.

Robert also thinks there”s too much competition to be a romantic comedy king like Hugh Grant.

“I think it”s such a typical career choice for me, as well, to be honest,” he said.

“If you do a big franchise thing – especially for English guys – you try and do a Hugh Grant part or something. Which I don”t think would be the best idea for me… mainly because it”s quite difficult to be Hugh Grant,” he added. (ANI)

Ablett knows where he’s going: Bomber

Geelong coach Mark Thompson says he suspects Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett has already made up his mind about which AFL club he will play with next season.

Ablett has been strongly targeted by the incoming Gold Coast franchise, which is able to offer him a much bigger salary than the Cats, but has yet to give a public indication of his thinking.

His younger brother Nathan has already been signed by the franchise.

“Gary probably already knows what he’s going to do, so we’ve just got to wait for him to tell us what he’s going to do,” Thompson said.

But Thompson refused to speculate on how he will treat Ablett for the rest of the season if he did tell the club he will not be there next year.

“That hasn’t happened, so I won’t speculate on something that I don’t know has happened until it actually happens,” he said.

“When it does happen we’ll certainly have some answers, if it does.”

But Thompson says himself and the rest of the players are putting Ablett’s future out of their minds as they prepared for Friday night’s opening round clash with Essendon at the MCG.

“The players don’t care that much, I couldn’t care less, and we just want to get out and play Essendon,” Thompson said.

The Cats will be missing Travis Varcoe and Max Rooke through injury and another forward Mathew Stokes through a club-imposed suspension.

But Joel Corey is expected to return from a preseason knee injury and Thompson also says there is likely to be a player making his AFL debut, although he did not say who.

More services sought to keep seniors

The National Seniors Association says there are not enough facilities in Gladstone to keep its senior citizens as they retire.

Everald Compton says many people leave the city when they are ready to retire because Gladstone does not have enough to offer.

He says several million dollars needs to be spent in the city to provide the range of services older people need.

“People need to retire where their friends are and where they’ve grown up and they feel secure in the culture,” he said.

“Gladstone hasn’t yet got a policy that will retain its older people in the community.

“Bear in mind if you can keep them here they’re the best volunteers to have in community organisations.”

GM to Reinstate Nearly 600 Dealers

Franchises took the automaker to arbitration to save their businesses.
NEW YORK – General Motors Co. will reinstate more than half the dealerships it targeted to drop from its network.
GM executives said Friday that about 600 dealerships out of the 1,100 seeking to stay with GM will receive letters giving them the option to remain with the automaker.

GM last year told 2,000 dealerships it would revoke their franchise agreements in October 2010 as part of its restructuring. The company has said it needs to shrink the number of showrooms to keep the remaining ones healthy.

The dealerships, who say they have been treated unfairly, have been appealing the decision.

The cuts to GM’s 6,000-dealer network were designed to compensate for much lower demand for cars and trucks, but some dealers have argued that lots that are still profitable are at risk, and that the automaker hasn’t offered enough details about how it’s choosing which businesses to shutter.

GM and Chrysler, which has slashed 789 dealers, have said they would reconsider the cuts. The decision was a compromise meant to avoid federal legislation that would require that the showrooms be kept open.

Under the revised plans, dealerships would get face-to-face reviews, binding arbitration and faster payments to help dealers slated for shutdown.

Congress-brokered talks between dealer groups and the automakers began in September. But those talks stalled over disputes about the review process for targeted dealerships and other issues. Looming over the fight has been the threat of federal legislation to deal with the closures. Lawmakers warned that if a deal wasn’t reached, that legislation would move forward.

The White House has opposed the legislation over concerns that it could hurt GM’s and Chrysler’s efforts to rebound from their government-led bankruptcies.

GM to Reinstate 600 Dealerships Slated to Be Cut

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open.

NEW YORK – General Motors Co. will reinstate 661 dealerships it sought to drop from its sales network.

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open. GM said it would not have enough time to negotiate with all 1,100 dealerships that appealed the automaker’s decision to close them within a four-month window imposed by the federal government.

“By doing this we save a lot of time, energy and dollars,” said Jim Bunnell, GM general manager of network support, saying the company wished to avoid a “very large arbitration process.”

As part of its restructuring, GM last year told about 2,000 dealerships it would not renew their franchise agreements once they run out in October 2010. But the dealerships have said GM treated them unfairly, and last month Congress passed a law requiring an appeals process for the dealers.

GM’s decision to keep the additional showrooms open effectively shrinks the number of appeals it has to contend with. Arbitration hearings for the dealers who didn’t get offers but still want to stay with GM will begin later this month.

The cuts to GM’s 6,000-dealer network were designed to compensate for much lower demand for cars and trucks, but some dealers have argued that lots that are still profitable are at risk, and that the automaker hasn’t offered enough details about how it’s choosing which businesses to shutter.

GM would not offer any details on Friday about which dealerships it was reinstating and where they are located. It said it chose the 661 based on a variety of criteria, including sales and other business factors.

The company said it hoped to have every letter of intent with dealerships by Monday. At that point, dealers have 10 days to respond and 60 days to meet a set of criteria that would allow them to stay with GM.

A spokeswoman with Chrysler Group LLC, which has cut 789 dealers, said the company was preparing a statement in response to questions about whether they also intended to reinstate dropped dealerships. Chrysler showrooms slated for closure are also appealing to stay open, though it remained unclear how many.

Michael Boudreau, an auto industry turnaround expert with O’Keefe & Associates, said GM likely saw the reinstatement of the dealers as the “lesser of the two evils” versus the costs of litigating their termination.

“It’s not exactly what they wanted to do, and it’s always I think a little embarrassing when you have to make changes based on an arbitration process, but they’ve had to adjust and move forward,” he said.

Boudreau added that the decision could have ripple effects.

“The Chrysler dealers are taking a close look at this,” he said.

Tammy Darvish of the Washington-area Darcars chain, which has three dealerships slated for closure, said she was encouraged by GM’s decision.

“If they are genuinely, truly sincere, it’s overwhelmingly heartwarming,” Darvish said of the company’s offer to allow dealers to demonstrate their eligibility to remain open.

But as of Friday, Darvish said she didn’t know if her franchises are among those being reinstated. She said she plans to go into arbitration if they are not.
