“New Moon” rises to No. 1 at midnight box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Vampire romance movie “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” raked in $26.3 million at North American box offices in midnight showings, breaking the record set by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” studio officials said on Friday.

Box office analysts expect the widely anticipated “New Moon” to make around $100 million in its opening weekend, Friday through Sunday, including screenings from last night at midnight.

The $26.3 million places the film at No. 1 on the chart of box office sales for midnight screenings, said Summit Entertainment, the independent studio behind the film.

“This massive fan response portends an opening weekend that could be one of the biggest of the year and reflects the fervor and excitement surrounding this follow-up to last year’s ‘Twilight,’” Paul Dergarabedian, head of Hollywood.com’s box office tracking division, said in a statement.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” made $22.2 million in midnight screenings when it was released this past July.

“New Moon” follows the dangerous romance between high school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and immortal vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

After falling in love with each other in “Twilight,” which came out exactly a year ago, Bella and Edward break up in “New Moon.” Bella finds solace in her friendship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), an American Indian who is also a werewolf.

Jacob protects Bella from vampires who kill humans, but she still longs for the gentle blood-sucker Edward who got away.

The “Twilight” film franchise is based on a series of four novels of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer, which her publisher says have sold 85 million copies worldwide.

Despite the crush of fans expected this weekend, “New Moon” has not won over critics. At review site RottenTomatoes.com, the film has received only a 31 percent favorable rating.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times panned the film, writing that “sitting through this experience is like driving a pickup in low gear through a sullen sea of Brylcreem.”

Still, movies aimed at teenagers like “New Moon” are generally considered to be immune from bad reviews because younger audiences don’t read them, and not all criticism was negative. “If you buy in to the central romance, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll swoon,” wrote British film magazine Empire.

‘Harry Potter’ director David Yates says finale to be best yet

“It’s fights and dragons and battles. It’s a real rollercoaster, but with a really oddly uplifting end.”

London, July 14 (ANI): The latest in the wizard film franchise, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, has been approved by the Vatican, which said that it was the best adaptation yet of JK Rowling’s hit novels.

Emma Watson wants to live normal life

Maybe it’s just like the grass is always greener. But normal things just sound so appealing right now. Just normal stuff,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying at a press conference for ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’

The actress also said that she managed to live a regular life whenever there is no buzz of a Harry Potter film.

“I’m very uncompromising about that. There are people who are advising me, ‘It’s not safe, you shouldn’t be doing this.’… But I really struggle with the idea that I’m having my freedom taken away.

“I just can’t handle that. I’d much rather deal with a couple of people coming up to me and stopping me than just not going out anymore. I’d go insane – you just end up with a barrier between you and the real world. You’re not experiencing things firsthand. …You’re bubble-wrapped.”

Watson is also excited about joining a university soon for further studies.

She exclaimed: “I think university, the college experience, just sounds so great. I just don’t want to miss out on it. I think it’s a great time to make friends. I think it’s a great time to figure out who you are and what you like.” (ANI)

Daniel Radcliffe, a famous actor has nothing but praise for fellow British heartthrob Robert Pattinson, claiming the “Twilight” leading actor as “a sex symbol” and “a genuine sexy guy.”

Younger actors started improving. A franchise like this relies heavily on the young cast members, and Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Daniel and Rupert Grint have all grown into solid talents. For that matter, many of the secondary student actors have shown a reliability that I woudn’t have expected.

Jason Isaacs, who played villain Lucius Malfoy in the earlier films, said that he was barely surprised by the fans’ dedication.

Stars walking down the soaked red carpet included Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Grainger, celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver with their families, Clive Owen, Graham Norton and Gary Lineker. (ANI)

Daniel Radcliffe happy to give up Harry Potter broomstick

London, July 7 (ANI): While fans might have enjoyed watching Harry Potter flying on his Quidditch broomstick, for Daniel Radcliffe, the wizarding sport was the worst thing in the movies.

“Quidditch is right up there with the least fun things I’ve done in Harry Potter,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“It’s not a pleasant experience, it does hurt quite a lot and it’s not something I would rush back to,” he added.

After having Quidditch scenes in virtually all of the Potter films, the 19-year-old star says that he’s happy that the seventh instalment ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ doesn’t have one.

“My favourite thing about seven is that I’ve had no Quidditch,” he said, “Quidditch was the low point (of the films).”

He added: “I have great memories, really. It’s weird looking back on the first few Harry Potter films because it just dosen’t really seem like us. It was such an exciting time in my life – everything was new, I had never been on a film set.

“I missed out on a lot of school and with that comes a lot of normality. But I don’t regret that, to be honest.”

“It would have been the pinnacle of his career – but at least we have a memory that will last forever,” she added.

Knox, from Sidcup, Kent, had just finished filming, when he was stabbed to death outside a bar in May last year. (ANI)

Daniel Radcliffe realizes he can’t escape Harry Porter tag

Washington, July 06 (ANI): Daniel Radcliffe has acknowledged that he will always be known as Harry Potter after starring in the movies inspired by J.K. Rowling’s books.

He gave a classic example of the film ‘Withnail and I’ to relate his case.

“It’s a bit like ‘Withnail and I’. With ‘Withnail and I’, every year there is a group of students introducing the next lot to that film,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The actor also revealed that he finds it hard to distinguish between the eight different films of the wizard franchise in which he has acted.

He said: “They blend into one. Even with different directors. But in terms of the people I see every day, not much has changed – make-up and costume has been pretty much the same right the way through. So it doesn’t feel like huge amounts of change.”

Radcliffe also hinted at what to expect from his character and his experience with headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the film.

He added: “It has always been very much that of student and teacher. Now it is soldier and general. Probably the note I got more than any other on this shoot was a reminder of how high the stakes are.”

The sixth film, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, will soon hit the screens in London. (ANI)
