A music concert for dogs

Sydney, June 6 (IANS) Hundreds of dogs had their own day as they attended a music concert at Sydney Opera House, in perhaps world’s first show exclusively for canines.

Almost every breed of pooch seemed to be represented at the iconic Opera House as musician Laurie Anderson staged a unique performance especially for his canine fans.

Many of them barked their approval as their owners among the audience sang Happy Birthday to the musician, who was celebrating her 63rd birthday.

The inter-species concert included 20 minutes of odd notes and weird high-pitched screeching of whales, birds and other animals, with furry ears pricking up and some joining in with howls of approval, reported Sky News.

Laurie Anderson, whose biggest hit was ‘Oh Superman’ in 1981, is renowned for experimental music.

Her husband Lou Reed listened in as she explained that she did not really know what sort of music appealed to dogs, but had tried out various pieces on her own terrier, Lollabelle.

‘That was the most amazing concert that I’ve ever gotten to give. The dogs are a really wonderful audience. They’re grooving and dancing and uninhibited,’ she said after the concert.

Most humans have a ‘hidden’ singer inside them

Washington, Mar 16 (ANI): If you’re one of those who avoid karaoke, then there’s something you should know: A researcher has claimed that most people possess hidden singing talent.

According to Lawrence Rosenblum, professor of psychology at the University of California, “you likely sing better than you realize.”

Rosenblum”s new book, See What I”m Saying: The Extraordinary Powers of Our Five Senses, explains that “most of us can carry a tune when given the appropriate context,” reports Discovery News.

In the tome, the expert mentioned a study, where individuals were randomly approached in a Montreal public park and were asked to sing the Quebec version of “Happy Birthday.”

The impromptu versions were then later computer analyzed for pitch and tempo errors.

“The results showed that a large majority of these park goers sung with few tempo errors, and only some slight errors in pitch,” Rosenblum wrote.

A follow-up experiment asked subjects with zero musical training to sing this same song at a slower rate. Surprisingly, 85 percent of the singers nailed the tune, with “errors so small as to rival those of a group of professional singers.” (ANI)

Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday celebrated in New Delhi

New Delhi, June 19 (ANI): Activists in New Delhi gathered outside the Myanmar embassy to celebrate the 64th birthday of Myanmar’s jailed opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday.

The activists, who had brought a birthday cake with a ’64′ candles on top, sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the tune of a guitar.

Denouncing the Nobel laureate’s ongoing trial, the activists chanted slogans of ‘Long Live Aung San Suu Kyi’ and demanded her release.

“The reason we have organised the birthday in front of the embassy is that, she has been in detention for more than 13 years and 235 days and she spent most of her birthdays under house arrest. So we have come here to inform them, that the embassy also should conduct something in India, in Delhi,” said Kim, an activist.

Myanmar’s junta had started a trial against Suu Kyi for allegedly violating the terms of her long-standing house arrest.

Suu Kyi faces three to five years in prison if found guilty of breaking the terms of her house arrest by letting an American intruder stay for two days after he swam to her home in May.

Suu Kyi has been detained for more than 13 of the last 19 years.

Myanmar’s military government had refused to recognise a 1990 landslide election victory by the NLD. (ANI)

Leona also called the Phones4U founder’s daughter Libby onstage to sing her hit ‘Bleeding Love’ with her.

Although ‘X Factor’ winner Leona is not suppose to stage any gigs according to her contract with Simon Cowell, she made an exception for the birthday party after the latter gave his nod.

“Leona was not supposed to do any live shows until next year, but she made an exception. It’s a hell of a lot of money and was a great party, so it was fun being involved,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The tabloid said that Libby was left dumbfounded when she saw Leona performing for her.

“It was a night Libby will certainly never forget. It was like a dream. She has not stopped talking about it ever since,” a guest said.

“Libby knew something was going to happen, but she just couldn’t believe it when Leona walked on the stage. Like most girls of her age, Libby is a massive fan of Leona. But most fans have to make do with listening to her tracks – not doing a duet with her,” the guest added.

Lucknow zoo celebrates birthday of leopard cubs

Lucknow, Jan 19 (SNI): It was fun, frolic and excitement for school children as they attended a rare birthday treat of leopard cubs at the zoo here.

The Lucknow Zoological Park celebrated the birthday of two leopard cubs brought to the zoo from Dudhwa Tiger Reserve exactly a year ago.

The two cubs, Suheli and Sharda, were rescued after being abandoned by their mother and brought to the zoo when they were only five to seven days old.

Zoo authorities said that it was extremely difficult for cubs from the cat family to survive after being abandoned by their mother but they managed to save the cubs.

“They were brought here from Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. That time they were only five to six days old and it was a big challenge for Lucknow zoo to save them. We tried our best to save them,” said Renu Singh, Director, Lucknow Zoological Park.

A cake was also cut to mark the occasion as school children sang birthday rhymes in chorus.

“We are feeling very nice and enjoying a lot. We sang songs and enjoyed a lot and wished them a very happy birthday,” said Yashaswi Singh, a student.

A drawing competition on the theme `Leopards’ was also organised and prizes given to the winners.

In India, leopards are found all over the country. Lack of natural habitat due to rapid cutting down of trees, has resulted in these felines entering human habitat, in search of food.

It is illegal to kill leopards in India, one among the endangered specie, presently found in Africa and Asia and often hunted for its fine fur. (ANI)
