Jet stalemate ends after five days

Mumbai, Sep.13 (ANI): Jet Airways pilots ended their five-day-old stir against their management early on Sunday morning with a settlement under which the four sacked pilots would be reinstated and a consultative group made up of the two sides formed to resolve all other issues.

The breakthrough, which came at around 2 a.m. this morning, ends an impasse that began on Tuesday over the sacking of pilots. It was achieved after a meeting here that lasted over ten hours.

Jet Airways Executive Director Saroj Dutta said flight operations of the airline on interantional routes would resume immediately while the domestic services would normalize by noon on Sunday.

Announcing the settlement at a news conference, the pilots union-National Aviators Guild-leader Sam Thomas, flanked by Jet Airways Executive Director Saroj Dutta and NAG President Girish Kaushik, said it has been agreed that the four sacked pilots would be reinstated with immediate effect.

A consultative group would be set up comprising the Jet CEO Hafiz Ali, two directors of the airlines, two representatives of flight operations and five pilots to continue the process of dialogue on all outstanding issues as well those which will come up.

Asked about losses suffered by the ailine during the five days of the agitation, Dutta said no estimates had been done as yet. However, he added that Jet’s daily revenue of eight million dollars “had dropped dramatically” and the number of passengers came down from 23,000 per day to 7,500.

On the contentious issue of the pilots’ right to form a union, Kaushik said there was no question of dissolving the NAG which is already a registered body.

The Registrar of Trade Unions is reviewing the NAG’s registration and if the decision goes against the pilots, they would not pursue it.

“If there is discrepancy, it is left to the Registrar or the law of the land”, Kaushik said.

Thomas added “we will not pursue the matter afresh.”

They said that the Society for Welfare of Indian Pilots, formed about a decade ago, would address welfare issues.

It was made clear that the management would take no punitive action against any one who had participated in the agitation. (ANI)

Jet Airways pilots’ strike continues, as talks with management fail

New Delhi, Sep.22 (ANI): The stalemate between the striking pilots of the Jet Airways and its management failed to come to an end even on the fourth day, as talks held between the two factions remained inconclusive on Friday.

The next round of discussion is expected to take place on Saturday in Mumbai, said television reports on Friday evening.

Conciliation talks between agitating Jet Airways pilots and the airline management were held in the national capital before the Chief Labour Commissioner to break the deadlock that has severely disrupted flights across the country.

Besides Chief Labour Commissioner S K Upadhyay, the talks were reportedly being attended by Jet executive director Saroj Dutta, CEO Hafiz Ali and head of operation Captain Mohan.

The pilots’ body National Aviators Guild (NAG) was being represented by its president Captain Girish Kaushik and Captain Sam Thomas.

The pilots have maintained that they would not return to work until the management took back four colleagues who were sacked. Two of them were allegedly shown the door 45 days ago for forming a union – the National Aviators Guild (NAG) – while the other two were sacked as the protest action began.

The four-day strike has led to the cancellation of nearly 700 flights, costing hardships to over 28,000 passengers. (ANI)

Jet Airways pilot strike conciliation talks on, solution expected soon

New Delhi, Sep. 11 (ANI): Conciliation talks between agitating Jet Airways pilots and the airline management have begun in the capital before the Chief Labour Commissioner to break the deadlock that has severely disrupted flights across the country.

Besides Chief Labour Commissioner S K Upadhyay, the talks are being attended by Jet executive director Saroj Dutta, CEO Hafiz Ali and head of operation Captain Mohan.

The pilots’ body National Aviators Guild (NAG) is being represented by its president Captain Girish Kaushik and Captain Sam Thomas.

As per the broad understanding, all four sacked pilots are to be reinstated and the charge sheets issued against some of the agitators will be withdrawn while the Registrar of the Trade Unions will look into the fulfillment of criteria of registration of the NAG.

On their part, the pilots will join their duties soon after the formal agreement is arrived at.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of a reported agreement arrived between the two sides through the mediation of Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam and some others.

Jet Airways and its pilots had last night hammered out a broad understanding to break the deadlock raising prospects of a quick return to normalcy.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had yesterday made enquiries about the crisis at a Cabinet meeting where Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel gave an update.

Late Thursday night, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal met Nirupam following which a broad understanding was arrived at.

The outlines of this understanding were later approved with some changes by agitating pilots in Mumbai.

The four-day strike has led to the cancellation of nearly 700 flights, costing hardships to over 28,000 passengers.

Kaushik said the pilots are ready to return to flying duties within 15 minutes of their sacked colleagues being reinstated. (ANI)
