Afridi looking to put Pakistan team back on track

Pakistan’s new Test and one-day captain, Shahid Afridi wants to root out indiscipline and infighting among his teammates in a bid to put the country’s under-achieving cricket team back on track.

Afridi said Wednesday he came out of self-imposed Test exile for the sake of Pakistan cricket and will make all efforts to lift the team out of the prevailing crisis.

‘My main task is to make a good team out of this talented bunch of players,’ he stressed. ‘I also want to promote unity and harmony among the boys because that’s the only way to get the best out of them,’ Afridi was quoted as saying in ‘The News’.

Pakistan cricket was rocked by a major controversy when the players got involved in a lot of mud-slinging during a probe conducted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in the aftermath of a catastrophic tour of Australia that concluded last February.

Several leading players accused each other of indiscipline during the proceedings of the probe committee after which seven of the country’s leading cricketers were slapped with strict penalties.

Afridi, 30, said as Pakistan’s new captain he would crack down on such negative behaviour.

‘I will not tolerate any sort of conspiracies in my team,’ he said. ‘I will encourage the boys to discuss their problems openly and I will ask them to bury their differences. When we leave on a tour I will ask them to leave all their problems behind and just focus on giving their best for the country.’

Afridi, who will be leading Pakistan in next month’s Asia Cup and more importantly during the challenging tour of England, made it clear that it will be a demanding task.

‘It’s a very tough task. I haven’t played Test cricket for quite some time but will have to lead the team from the front on the tour of England.

‘To play against Australia and England in English conditions would need a lot of guts. But I am hopeful that the boys will rise to the challenge.’

Afridi, however, was quick to warn his fans against raising their expectations.

‘We are good in limited-overs cricket but will take time to settle down in Tests and we need to be patient.’

However, Afridi is hopeful that a likely return of experienced players like Younis Khan and Shoaib Akhtar will boost the team’s chances in the Asia Cup and in England where his team will play back-to-back series against Australia and the hosts from July to September.

‘Younis is coming back, Shoaib is coming back and that’s going to help me a lot.’

Afridi is also optimistic that a few youngsters whom Pakistan are likely to include for the two assignments will also shine in Sri Lanka and in England.

‘Almost as important as senior players are the newcomers because they hold the key to our team’s future,’ he said. ‘We are planning to try out a few youngsters in the forthcoming events and I’m hopeful that they will not disappoint us.’

Afridi played the last of his 26 Tests almost four years back in Manchester and his critics doubt his chances of making a successful comeback in Tests.

‘I will focus on my batting and my bowling because that’s the way I can contribute properly in Tests. It won’t be easy but I’m mentally prepared to take up this challenge for the sake of the team.’

New world record set for longest ever football game

London, May 13 (ANI): A new world record has been set for playing the longest ever game of football by a team of enthusiastic players.

Defying torrential rain, wintry temperatures and injuries, 36 footballers played non-stop for a staggering 40 hours 15minutes.

The final score was equally surprising with the Reds beating the Whites 390-247.

Ex-Wales and Arsenal star John Hartson, who is fighting cancer, kicked off the record-breaking soccer match at Hinchingbrooke School, Cambs.

Richard Philp, a former Luton Town star, said: “My legs are still moving, but my feet are like balloons. Some people can”t get their shoes on because their feet have swollen up.”

“We had three players taken to hospital — we survived on guts and adrenaline,” The Sun quoted Philp, as saying.

Organiser Zac Cornish set up the super-tough challenge to raise cash after his father Chris defeated cancer.

So far the event has raised 10,000 pounds, which will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support, the John Hartson Foundation and Sports Connections. (ANI)

Disgraced Madhuri Gupta yearned for plum posting

Madhuri Gupta, the 53-year-old second secretary at the Indian High Commission here who has been arrested on charges of allegedly spying for Pakistan, was hoping for a plum diplomatic posting in either London or Washington.

“I should get London or Washington,” a confident Gupta said few months back. Gupta had earlier served in the Indian mission in Baghdad and said she was looking forward to another good posting sometime later this year.

Gupta made friends easily and was great with small talk. She could talk about clothes, hair styles or Pakistan’s Urdu press ¿ “where the real news was” ¿ with equal ease.

“English newspapers are boring. They always pick up news a day late. If you want to read real news, real gossip, read Urdu newspapers,” she told this correspondent once.

Gupta learnt Urdu in New Delhi shortly before she was posted to Pakistan in late 2007. She hired a Muslim woman as a private tutor to teach her.

“She taught me from scratch. I didn’t even know my ‘alif-bays’,” said Gupta, who had earlier learnt another foreign language at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s school of languages.

Gupta spoke perfect Urdu and could have easily passed off as a Pakistani because of her accent. Like locals, she was always well dressed, make-up in place, her hair coloured and looked younger than her age.

“I bought this in Lajpat Nagar on my last trip to India,” she said when friends recently praised her stylish new coat.

Gupta sometimes came across as brash and fearless, especially when she regaled friends with tales of driving to India via the Islamabad-Lahore motorway, often at breakneck speed. “I did the Lahore motorway in three-and-a-half hours,” she would tell friends, most of whom admired her guts for driving to and fro alone.

Orascom Devt eyes Uganda for budget housing-report

CAIRO, April 14 (Reuters) – Swiss-based developer Orascom Development Holding (ODHN.S) is in talks to build a budget housing project in Uganda and is studying similar developments in Zambia and Ghana, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Orascom (ODHR.CA) is known mostly for building and running high-end resort towns, but is planning several low-income projects, including ones in Romania and Iraq. [ID:nLDE63C14S]

The developer is eyeing 4-5 million square metres of land near Uganda’s capital Kampala for a project similar to Haram City, a budget housing development near Cairo, the daily al-Mal quoted Chief Executive Samih Sawiris as saying.

In a text message requesting confirmation of the news, Sawiris told Reuters: “Let’s wait and see if they deliver before we say it’s happening.

“You know that anyone from any government side who sees Haram City usually calls up to say we want to have one. The question is who has the guts to allocate a huge piece of land very close to his capital at nominal cost to get it,” he said in the message.

Orascom’s main presence is in Egypt, where it lists depositary receipts. It also owns land and runs projects across the Middle East and Europe. (Reporting by Alexander Dziadosz; Editing by David Holmes)

George Clooney gives $19,000 charity cheque to ex-girlfriend

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): George Clooney may have split from ex-girlfriend Lisa Snowdon long ago, but still seems to shower expensive gifts on her, for he has recently handed her a 19,000 dollars cheque for her charity initiative.

The Hollywood hottie and the British radio presenter ended their relationship in 2006, and the ‘Ocean’s 11′ star is now dating Italian Elisabetta Canalis.

However, they have remained friends even after the split.

And when Snowdon announced that she would be jumping out of a plane to raise money for good causes, Clooney was only too happy to help.

The star has donated 19,000 dollars for her parachute jump, which benefits the ‘Help A London Child’ scheme and the ‘Shooting Star Hospice’.

“George was so impressed with Lisa’s guts and determination that he wanted to help. Lisa had no idea how generous he would be until she logged on to her website and saw how much he had put down,” Contactmusic quoted a source as having told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper. (ANI)

Vettori cleverest finger spinners in the world, says Boock

Colombo, Aug 30(ANI): Former New Zealand cricketer Stephen Boock reckons that captain Daniel Vettori is one of the cleverest finger spinners to grace the cricketing world.

“Everyone knows what Dan bowls: little spinners that turn away [from the right-hander] or ones that skid through, that’s the guts of it. There’s no secrets in his armoury but the way he uses what he’s got is the best I’ve seen,” Boock told the Sunday Star-Times.

“What you’ve got to do is be able to read the wicket and work out what is about this wicket that will give me the best result. How fast should I bowl, how much effort should I put into turning he ball. Dan either does that naturally or by learning,” he added.

Speaking after Vettori double feat of 3000 runs and 300 wickets, Boock said Vettori’s intelligence as a bowler was without peer, as he possessed the ability to figure up the pitch in order to adjust his bowling pace and spin to get the best results, Stuff.co.nz reports.

“Dan’s not a flamboyant player, but he’s a clear thinker who has a good understanding of cricket and he will have no expectation that he will be treated as a movie star because that’s not what he is: he’s a spin bowler who works very hard,” Boock said.

He further said that if Vettori keeps on playing for another four-five years, he could go beyond Sir Richard Hadlee as New Zealand’s wicket-taker and could join Kapil Dev. (ANI)

Duncan James admits being a bisexual

London, July 12 (ANI): Boy band Blue’s Duncan James has come out of the closet to admit that he is a bisexual.

“I was living a secret life. I went through a process of asking what the f*** am I?Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi? That’s why I was so frightened about talking. Now, in my early 30s, I know who I am and I’m proud of who I am. I don’t want to hide anymore,” the News of the World quoted him as saying.

The news is expected to shock the pop star’s female fans all over the world.

However, it took a lot of guts for the star to open up about his sexuality.

He said: “I’d never talked to my mum about sex and relationships. It was quite a taboo subject because we came from a Catholic upbringing.

“One night towards the end of the trip, I knocked on my mum’s door before she went to bed. I was looking down and avoiding her eyes. I said, ‘I need to talk to you’.

“She said, ‘Oh my God, what’s wrong, are you all right?’

“I responded, ‘I need to tell you something. I’ve been in a relationship with a guy and I’m really confused about it. I haven’t been able to talk to anyone for a couple of years.’

“She hugged me and couldn’t believe it. She said, ‘I thought you were going to tell me you were dying or something. Hundreds of people have had things with guys as well as girls. I love you, that doesn’t matter to me.’

The singer then went on to disclose it to his band members who supported him.

He added: “I told Simon first. He went straight away, ‘Is that all you’re worried about? I love you man. That’s cool. You’re not alone. It doesn’t change anything for us.’

“I spoke to Lee next then Ant. They were really supportive too. After that I actually felt quite comfortable with myself.”

He had his first relationship with a person of the same sex in 2001, the year the band were celebrating their first three No1 hits – All Rise, Too Close and If You Come Back.

He said: “I’d never been intimate with a man. I’d been quite happy having girlfriends.

“But I met a guy. He was my friend at first but we took the friendship to the next level.

“Up until that point I’d never had those feelings towards a guy before. But this person came into my life and put a spanner in the works. I definitely loved him. It was my first experience like that.

Duncan still likes women, he added: “I can still look at women now and think they’re sexy.

I love being intimate with a woman, I love breasts. I do think girls can be a lot more emotional.”

James, who was looked at as a womanizer until now, has a four-year-old daughter, Tianie-Finne James with former girlfriend Claire Granger.

He has been to linked a string of women in the past including Geri Halliwell, Tara Palmer Tomkinson, Martine McCutcheon and ex-Big Brother winner Kate Lawler. (ANI)

Mayawati faces flak for hush-hush statue inaugurations

Lucknow, June 26 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is facing flak from Congress leader Digvijay Singh and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for unveiling a series of statues, memorials and parks across the state.

He said this while speaking to media persons at New Delhi on Friday.

On Thursday, Mayawati had formally inaugurated over 15 memorials in Lucknow, nine days ahead of schedule.

It is being speculated that a PIL filed by Delhi based lawyer Ravi Kant against such projects prompted the BSP chief to unveil the memorials in a hush so that the Supreme Court does not put the projects on hold.

“Mayawati is constructing huge structures in the same lines as it used to be in Roman Empire and Mughal Empire. An inquiry should be made from which mine the stones for the construction have been procured, who is the owner of the mine or has leased the mine. The public money is being wasted. Yesterday, the inauguration was done in a hurry as on July 3, public interest litigation (PIL) has to come-up for hearing in the Supreme Court. Public won’t forgive Mayawati,” said Singh.

Meanwhile, Mulayam Singh Yadav, chief of regional Samajwadi Party said that the state government in Uttar Pradesh is scared to face the public as such Mayawati had hurriedly inaugurated the memorial project.

“Such a Chief Minister doesn’t have the guts to face the public. She is scared. Her government is in distress. She wants to run the government quietly. We have razed a statue using a bulldozer at Lohia junction. Such acts are bound to happen,” said Yadav.

However, Mayawati has refuted allegations that she is misusing public funds to construct memorials, parks and museums dedicated to Dalit leaders. (ANI)

Human nose too cold for bird flu viruses to thrive

Washington, May 15 (ANI): A study authored by researchers at from Imperial College London and the University of North Carolina has revealed that avian influenza viruses do not thrive in humans because the temperature inside their noses is very low.

The researchers say that the new finding may help explain why bird flu viruses do not cause pandemics in humans easily.

In their study report, the scientists point out that there are 16 subtypes of avian influenza, some of which can mutate into forms that can infect humans by swapping proteins on their surface with proteins from human influenza viruses.

They say that normal avian influenza viruses do not spread extensively in cells at 32 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside the human nose, which is probably because the viruses usually infect the guts of birds, which are warmer, at 40 degrees Celsius.

Based on this observation, according to them, it may be said that avian flu viruses that have not mutated are less likely to infect people, as the first site of infection in humans is usually the nose.

When the researchers created a mutated human influenza virus by adding a protein from the surface of an avian influenza virus, they found it to struggle to thrive at 32 degrees Celsius. This indicates that any mutated virus would have to undergo further changes to adapt to the conditions in the human body.

The study also revealed that far fewer cells died as a result of infection with avian influenza compared with human influenza at 32 degrees Celsius, supporting the idea that the avian virus could not thrive at that temperature.

Professor Wendy Barclay, one of the authors of the study from the Division of Investigative Science at Imperial College London, said: “Bird viruses are out there all the time but they can only cause pandemics when they undergo certain changes. Our study gives vital clues about what kinds of changes would be needed in order for them to mutate and infect humans, potentially helping us to identify which viruses could lead to a pandemic.”

Professor Barclay added: “It would be impossible to develop vaccines against all 16 subtypes of avian flu, so we need to prioritise.

By studying a range of different viruses in systems like this one we can look for warnings that they are already beginning to make the kinds of genetic changes in nature that mean they could be poised to jump into humans; animal viruses that spread well at low temperatures in these cultures could be more likely to cause the next pandemic than those which are restricted.”

The study has been published in the journal PLoS Pathogens. (ANI)
