405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Amritsar to be a major tourist destination

Amritsar, July 13 (ANI): Known for its rich Punjabi culture, religious environment, and sumptuous food, Amritsar has been a draw for visitors from across the country and abroad for a long time.

Though tourists visit this holy city in big numbers, but to attract more visitors plans are underway to promote it as a major tourist destination.

Founded in Circa 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the 4th guru of the Sikhs, Amritsar literally means a pool of nectar. It derives its name from the sacred pool, Amrit Sarovar, that surrounds the holy Sri Harmandir Sahib popularly known as Golden Temple.

A pilgrimage for the Sikhs, Sri Harmandir Sahib draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists everyday from different parts of the country and world. It also helps Amritsar generate a fair amount of revenue.
But the challenge for the administration is to provide them facilities like accommodation and transportation.

To improve services and infrastructure for the tourists is on top of the agenda.

“People of all religions from across the world visit Sri Harmandir Sahib, Durgiana Temple and Jallianwala Bagh.

And, City’s municipal corporation is dedicated to facilitating their visit. Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has started a bus service from Amritsar Railway Station to Sri Harmandir Sahib and other pilgrimage sites such as Khadur Sahib and Goindwal Sahib.

Air-conditioned buses also ply for foreign tourists. SGPC is committed to attracting religious tourists to Sri Harmandir Sahib and Amritsar city,” said Ajaybir Pal Singh Randhwa, Sr. Deputy Mayor of Amritsar.

In a bid to offer security and better services to tourists in Amritsar, the Punjab Government recently organised the Tourism Police.

The Centre has agreed in principle to grant five million dollars for developing Amritsar as a major tourist destination. Of that one million dollars have already been sanctioned under the Normal Destination Development Scheme for the city.

It includes conservation of historic and religious places and improvement of facilities for tourists.
“Every facility is available for tourists. But the government should concentrate more on improving air links and railway service. Special attention should also be given to cleanliness because it is only then that tourists from America and Europe who like to visit clean places will speak well about us when they return to their country,” said a tourist.

“The facilities at the Golden Temple are excellent. We have come from Gujarat state and people in Punjab are very hospitable and respectful,” a tourist from Gujarat.

The city boasts of a Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama, located inside the historic Ram Bagh. It’s a major tourist attraction that recreates the life and battles of the legendary Maharaja, through rare pictures and mannequins.

The city, however, lacks proper accommodation for domestic and foreign visitors. And, the hotels would like to start Bread and Breakfast Schemes to meet this shortfall.
“The Centre runs Bed and Breakfast Scheme in Delhi to give foreign tourists experience the warmth of Indian hospitality. But here the local administration says that tourists can only stay at those guesthouses that have been given licenses.

Can’t we open guesthouses and restaurants in the heritage buildings? We want that these heritage buildings should be given a license and training and we are ready to bear all the expenses to make the scheme work,” said Surinder Singh, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Amritsar.

The Beating Retreat ceremony at Wagah-Attari border check-post is another major tourist attraction. To draw more tourists, the government has already sanctioned 970,000 dollars for the project Integrated Development of Wagah/Attari Border.

It includes development of tourist facilities and upgradation of surroundings of the international border. (ANI)

Sikh devotees furious over demolition orders of a gurdwara in Sangrur

Sangrur (Punjab), June 22 (ANI): A number of Sikh devotees are outraged due to Akal Takht’s order to demolish a portion of a controversial gurdwara due to having objection over its shape which resembles the Golden Temple of Amritsar.

The construction of the controversial Gurudwara located at Malerkotla has upset the Akal Takht as well as the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body that manages all major Sikh shrines across the country.

On Sunday, Akal Takht ordered for demolition of domes and other portions of the controversial Sikh temple and also changing of the name of the gurdwara following a meeting conducted by over 50 Sikh religious bodies including the Jathedar of Akal Takht in holy Amritsar city.

Over a hundred of devotees have armed themselves with sticks to guard the gurdwara’s complex since the demolition orders.

Men, women, and even children, are patrolling the complex day and night, ready to even lay down their lives to protect their revered shrine.

“This is the organisation’s decision. We will not let anybody damage the temple and thousands of people from our area are ready to protect it. We will not tolerate it (destruction of gurdwara). For us Durbar Sahib is more important than Akal Takht … We all are guarding the temple…If anybody comes to destroy it, we will retaliate. We will protect it at any cost even if we have to lay down our lives,” said Balbir Singh, a devotee.

The roots of the controversy are 40 years old. The shrine, owned by Mastuana Dera, a Sikh sect headed by Sant Sadhu Singh, has been under construction since 1967.

The Mastuana sect comprises of Sikh followers, mostly from the lower-strata of society. Recent attempts to restart work on the incomplete shrine have provoked angry objections. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Akal Takht asks SGPC to reshape Golden temple’s replica in Sangrur

Amritsar, June 21 (ANI): Taking objection to the design of a Gurdwara being constructed as the Golden Temple’s replica at Malerkotla in Sangrur district of Punjab, Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of the Sikhs, has directed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the premier body of Sikhs, to ensure necessary modifications.

The construction of the controversial gurudwara at Malerkotla has upset devotees as well as the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body managing Sikh shrines.

On Saturday, the Jathedar of Akal Takht along with other four Jathedars decided that the replica of the Golden Temple should be reshaped with modifications which should include filling the gurdwara’s Sarovar with earth, demolishing four domes made in four corners of gurdwara, and changing gurdwara’s name.

The decision was taken during a meeting of various Sikh religious bodies. The meet was intended to reach a unanimous decision to prevent a Gurudwara Management body to make replica of Sikhs most revered shrine Golden Temple.

However, the roots of the controversy go back 40 years ago. A shrine, owned by Mastuana Dera, a Sikh sect headed by Sant Sadhu Singh, had been under construction since 1967. However, the construction work was stopped twice after the intervention of the SGPC and Akal Takht earlier. But recent attempts to restart that work on the incomplete shrine have invited fury and objections.

On Saturday, Gurbachan Singh, the Jathedar of Akal Takht in a news conference told media that the management committee of the Mastuana Dera appeared before the Akal Takht and submitted its written apology. But no one should be allowed to build the replica of the Golden Temple and anyone involved in such an act should be punished.

Singh said that the Akal Takht had ordered SGPC to reshape the building and SGPC should take over the construction work and no one else would be allowed to construct any thing at the controversial building.

Akal Takht in its direction to SGPC has stated that while reshaping the building of the said Gurudwara all the dooms should be demolished. There should be a single doom constructed as it appears on many gurdwaras. The name of the Gurudwara should be “Singh Sabha Mastuana”.

Jathedar also said that the constructed “Har ki Pauri” and the bridge should also be also pulled down and a new varanda should be constructed around the building.

He said Baba Baldev Singh Suharaewala, who dared to hurt religious sentiments of Sikhs, would be summoned at Akal Takht to submit his clarification.

SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar has said that SGPC would go abide by the order given by the Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of Sikhs. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Thousands of people, including many from the minority Sikh community, have fled Pakistan’s Swat Valley, as government troops battle Taliban fighters after a February peace pact to end violence in the valley collapsed.

Indian Sikhs say the government in Pakistan was doing little to protect the lives of Sikhs.

Members of the delegation said that they have given specific list of people to the Pakistan Government who have taken refuge in Gurudwara and asked the government to take proper action.

“What Pakistan said that trouble is there, but is not alarming. We have given them figures of how many people taken refuge in Panja Sahib Gurudwara. They have started fleeing and the Pakistan Government should take responsibility.”

Paramdeep Singh wishes to promote Sikhism in glamour world

Ludhiana, April 29 (ANI): Ludhiana-based Paramdeep Singh, the first runner up at ‘Mr. Singh India 2009′, is keen to promote Sikhism while building a career in the glamour world.

Paramdeep walks down the ramp as a proud Sikh’. Despite making a professional career through fashion, Paramdeep wants youngsters to not put aside their religious identities in the name of fashion.

“I am 23-year-old and I found the youth of my age cutting their hair. Also, they hate to wear a turban. They believe turban as a burden. I want to send a message that if by cutting hair and trimming beard they believe it gives a smart look. They are wrong. Being a Sikh, I walked down the ramp at a national level competition. I stood 1st runner-up there. I mean to say that a complete Sikh is more handsome to those who trimmed or cut their hair,” said Paramdeep Singh, first runner up of Mr.Singh India 2009.

“After the release of the film ‘Singh is Kinng’, the turban attained more respect in films. If you monitor any of the recent films, it has one character as a Sikh. If they don’t have a Sikh, there is an essence of Punjabi in the film. If, it’s not there, the film flops. A Punjabi touch in the film has become a trend now,” Paramdeep added.

Paramdeep tells how he has been keen on fashion since his school and college days. He used to be a fashion choreographer in many of the fashion shows and also received the best singer award at Mumbai for singing devotional songs.

Despite his busy schedule, Paramdeep regularly recites Kirtan at the gurudwara and many times at home during family functiond. Besides, he has been drawn to theatre.

“I also remained the president of cultural society. No doubt, we shouldn’t run off with our principles. As we stayed in Mumbai for 10 days, we performed dance, did practice on the ramp and even offered prayer at the gurudwara and sung ‘kirtan’. Our routine was so excellent that we wake up and do fitness exercises in a gym and then offer prayer. That was our routine,” said Paramdeep.

“Besides following strict principles we should also do fitness exercises and participate in the fashion shows, and go for swimming and play sports. This is our right and how can we leave all this?,” said Paramdeep. (ANI)

Court adjourns verdict on Tytler till April 28

New Delhi, Apr 9 (ANI): A Kakardooma Court on Thursday postponed the hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea for closing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler.

The court will hear the arguments from both sides on April 28 and 29.

The court held that all evidence filed pertaining to the case needs to be analysed before taking a decision on the CBI’s final closure report.

During the hearing, the CBI argued that the court did not have the power to take a decision on the investigation done by the agency since the case was related to murder.

However, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit overruled the CBI’s point and fixed the argument on the matter for a later date.

The court has also directed the investigating agency to hand it over the CDs containing the evidence in the case.

During the period of the court hearing, over 500 protesters from various Sikh organisations broke the barricades outside the court and climbed over gates.

The protesters, who were agitated over the CBI’s decision to give a clean chit to Tytler, demanded stringent punishment for him for his alleged role in instigating the riots pertaining to killing of three persons when a mob attacked Gurudwara Pulbangash on November 1, 1984.

They even burnt an effigy of Tytler outside the court premises.

Extra police forces were deployed at the court to maintain law and order.

The CBI, on April 2, had recommended quashing of FIR against Tytler as it did not have sufficient evidence to proceed on the matter. On March 28, the CBI filed the report in a sealed envelope before Metropolitan Magistrate Ram Lal Meena.

Tytler was among the three prominent leaders named in the reports on anti-Sikh riots. Two other leaders named were Sajjan Kumar and the late HKL Bhagat.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which claimed the lives of almost 3000 Sikhs, were triggered by the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards. (ANI)

Delhi court to decide Jagdish Tytler’s fate today

New Delhi, Apr 9 (ANI): The Kakardooma Court will today decide the fate of former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The court may decide on accepting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closure report against Tytler and ordering the quashing of charges against him or order fresh investigation into the case.

On April 2, Tytler was given a clean chit by the CBI in the case. De-sealing its final investigation report in a court, the CBI recommended quashing of FIR against Tytler.

The CBI counsel told Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit that we have filed the cancellation report in the matter and want to close the investigation.

H S Phoolka, counsel for the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, raised objections over the alleged leak of the report to Tytler who had claimed innocence in the case.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which claimed the lives of almost 3000 Sikhs, were triggered by the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards. (ANI)

Lok Sabha ticket, job offer for shoe throwing scribe

Chandigarh, April 7 (IANS) Iraqi journalist Montadher al-Zaidi, who is biding time in a prison after his shoe-throwing action on then US President George W. Bush last year, is not going to like it.

The main protagonist of the Indian version of his act, journalist Jarnail Singh who hurled a shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi Tuesday, has not only been released but is getting attractive offers.

The Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by radical leader and former IPS officer Simranjit Singh Mann has offered a Lok Sabha ticket to Jarnail Singh.

Mann has offered to give his party’s ticket for the Amritsar seat, from where cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is seeking re-election on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

‘Jarnail has done a big act of bravery. We all Sikhs take pride in what he did to highlight the injustice against Sikhs. He is a warrior of the community,’ Mann said.

The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, has offered to give a job to Jarnail Singh if his employer (Hindi newspaper Dainik Jagran) fires him from his present job after his action.

Jarnail Singh’s employers, in a press statement, have already said disciplinary action was being initiated against him.

The cash-rich SGPC, which has an annual budget of Rs.4.48 billion (448 crore), also offered to take care of Jarnail Singh and his family.

The Delhi unit of the Akali Dal has already announced a reward of Rs.200,000 to the shoe-throwing scribe.
