Katherine Heigl, Josh Kelley adopting baby girl

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl and her singer husband Josh Kelley are said to be ready to adopt a baby girl.

The pair, who had earlier not spoken about starting a family, has now decided to adopt a girl from Korea, the same way Heigl’s sister did.

“Katherine and Josh are adopting a baby,” Us magazine quoted the actress’ rep as telling People magazine.

Meanwhile Heigl, 30, who married Kelly, 29, in December 2007, recently hosted a baby shower for Ellen Pompeo. (ANI)

Song birds have to deal with cover artists too

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): Just like great singers among humans, birds too have to deal with cover artists who copy songs.

A new research has revealed that some bird species have evolved to sing the same tune as their rivals, in order to compete effectively.

Led by Dr. Joseph Tobias and Dr Nathalie Seddon from the Edward Grey Institute, University of Oxford, the research team analysed the calls and songs of two antbird species that were living side-by-side in the Amazon rainforest- the Peruvian warbling-antbird and the yellow-breasted warbling-antbird.

The study was aimed at investigating their similar songs, and, in particular, at testing the theory that the birds’ songs could become increasingly similar to enable effective communication between competing species.

The above notion has attracted controversy as many scientists have argued that convergence in territorial or mating signals results in needless confrontation or crossbreeding and the creation of hybrids.

“Biologists have long been fascinated by convergence in ecological traits as it offers tangible evidence of evolution and the forces of selection by which it operates, but until now there is no clear evidence that social competition between animal species can produce convergent signals. We examined this idea by analysing the structure and function of songs in two birds which we knew to be strong social competitors,” said Tobias.

The researchers studied the species in Peru and Bolivia at one site where they lived together, and two sites where they lived in isolation.

Firstly, they recorded three sets of signals-songs, calls, and plumage colour of both species (including a total of 504 songs from 150 individuals).

Later, they played them back to individuals of each species to test the significance of songs of both types.

The results showed that territorial songs of both species were extremely similar particularly where they lived together, such that territorial birds treated songs of both species as equally threatening.

In the meantime, they discovered that non-territorial signals like calls and plumage were highly divergent.

“In effect, the territorial songs of these birds are more or less interchangeable in design and function. Given that they last shared a common ancestor more than 3 million years ago, it is almost equivalent to humans and chimpanzees – which diverged around 5 million years ago – using the same language to settle disputes over resources” said Tobias.

“Our results provide the first compelling evidence that social interaction can cause convergent evolution in species competing for space and resources.

They also suggest that while competition drives convergence in territorial songs, this is offset by divergence in non-competitive signals such as plumage colour to promote species recognition and reduce the chance of interbreeding,” he added.

Shampoo to reverse greying of hair may be available in 2yrs

London, June 22 (ANI): A hair cream, shampoo, or conditioner capable enough to wash the grey out of your hair may be available in the shops within two years, say researchers.

Dr. Bruno Bernard, head of the hair biology research team at beauty firm L’Oreal in Paris, points out that hair goes grey when the pigment-producing cells, known as melanocytes, die or no longer work properly.

He, however, also highlights the fact that such cells often survive long after people go grey.

He and his colleagues have also found that the cells lack a certain enzyme, known as TRP-2, which is found in the skin and protects it from losing its pigment.

The researchers are now planning further studies in the hope that they will be able to mimic the enzyme’s action on hair follicles, re-awaken the cells, allow people to maintain their hair colour for longer, or even reverse the process.

“The hair whitening process is slow and progressive, so we can prevent it,” the Daily Express quoted Bernard as saying.

Nick Ede, a GMTV lifestyle specialist, said that the discovery was “revolutionary”.

He said: “This will be welcomed with open arms. It will save a lot of people a lot of money and I think it will be very beneficial.”

Angela Marshall, an image consultant and the owner of Surrey-based Appearance Management, added: “It is very exciting and it could be revolutionary in that so many people colour their hair and then worry about the colour they have used. This could save a lot of people, both men and women, a lot of money and worry.”

She, however, also said that every one may not benefit from the new treatment.

“It could be problematic for people with very dark hair as their eyebrows would probably still go grey and then their colourings would not match well. So treatment would probably be better for people with blonde hair where there would not be such a stark contrast,” she said. (ANI)

Sasha Grey’s sex scenes cut in Soderbergh’s ‘The Girlfriend Experience’

Washington, Jun 19 (ANI): Award-winning American pornographic actress Sasha Grey’s sex scenes in veteran director Steven Soderbergh’s movie ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ were cut after he decided they were not required.

Soderbergh, 46, had discovered Grey, 21, in Los Angeles Magazine, and he was determined to hire her to play the part of a high-class NYC hooker in his new drama.

But, oddly enough, even though she is an X-rated film star, she did not have to bare much or even do a sex scene.

“Steven never really said if there was going to be a sex or scene or not, but in the outline it did say for three different scenes, ‘Sex Scene with Chris’, ‘Sex Scene with Client B’, ‘Sex Scene with the Hobbyist’. I never really knew,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

“But I knew he (Soderbergh) wouldn’t have a sex scene for the sake of sex,” she said.

According to Soderbergh, he had looked closely at the script, and then decided “it wasn’t necessary”. (ANI)

Diabetes drug found to provide protective effects against multiple sclerosis

Washington, May 27 (ANI): University of Illinois researchers have observed that an FDA-approved drug, which is currently in use for diabetes treatment, shows some protective effects in the brains of patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis.

This finding is based on a small, double-blinded clinical trial in which patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis were assigned to take the drug pioglitazone or a placebo.

Patients continued their normal course of therapy during the trial.

The researchers initially carried out standard neurological and MRI scans to provide baseline values for lesions typically seen in MS patients.

The patients were evaluated every two months, and blood samples were taken. Repeat MRI scans were done after five months and again after one year.

Patients taking the drug showed significantly less loss of grey matter over the course of the one-year trial than patients taking placebo.

Of the 21 patients who finished the study, patients taking the medicine did not show any adverse reactions. They found taking pioglitazone, which is administered in an oral tablet, easy.

“This is very encouraging. Grey matter in the brain is the part that is rich in neurons. These preliminary results suggest that the drug has important effects on neuronal survival,” said Douglas Feinstein, research professor of anesthesiology at UIC.

The researchers revealed that they focused on pioglitazone because of its known anti-inflammatory effects.

They used primary cultures of brain cells to show that pioglitazone reduced the production of toxic chemicals called cytokines and reactive oxygen species, the molecules that are believed to be important in the development of symptoms in MS.

Feinstein’s lab has shown that pioglitazone and other TZDs “can significantly reduce the clinical signs in mice with an MS-type disease.”

“More importantly, when mice who are already ill are treated with pioglitazone, the clinical signs of the disease go away. We were able to induce almost complete remissions in a number of mice,” he said.

“We are now working to determine the mechanisms to explain the protective effect on neurons that we see in our studies. We hope to expand into a larger trial to confirm these preliminary results,” he added.

The study has been published in the online edition of the Journal of Neuroimmunology. (ANI)

Drew Barrymore doesn’t believe in dieting

New Delhi, April 27 (ANI): Drew Barrymore, famed for her curvaceous figure, is not in favour of going on extreme diets to become thin.

The actress believes that one can achieve ideal body shape by eating everything in moderation as well as undergoing regular exercise, reports the China Daily.

“My top beauty and fitness tip is to eat whatever you want in smaller increments but don’t starve yourself to societal pressures,” she said.

“And I love to exercise because it makes me feel good about myself,” she added.

Unlike many other celebrities take dieting to the extreme in order to get as thin as possible, the ‘Grey Gardens’ star is determined to maintain her figure through healthy eating and exercise. (ANI)

Call for TV ban on Knightley’s ‘too violent’ domestic violence ad

London, Apr 26 (ANI): An anti-domestic violence advert, starring Keira Knightley, has been branded “too shocking” by advertising censors.

The British actress did the public service advertisement titled Cut, for Women’s Aid, an anti-domestic violence group.

Now, censor bosses are refusing to allow it to be broadcast on TV unless key scenes are cut.

The gripping ad shows Knightley leaving a movie set and arriving home late to a violent partner. He beats her, pulling her up by the hair and kicking her in the stomach.

The camera then pans out to show she’s still on a movie set and the words “isn’t it time someone called cut” are shown onscreen. She can be heard screaming in the background.

The commercial was directed by BAFTA winner Joe Wright, who worked with Knightley on Atonement.

Charities working to combat domestic violence branded the decision by Clearcast, the ad approval body “pathetic”.

“It seems pathetic. It is really important to raise awareness about domestic violence, and TV gets into people’s homes,” The Independent quoted Sandra Horely, chief executive of Refuge, a charity that provides accommodation for women and children escaping from domestic violence, as saying.

“Many women who are victims of domestic violence are isolated by their partner, and in these situations TV is very helpful. It is also a great way to reach the public and raise awareness of the issue,” said Horely.

It was being hoped that the ad would air on TV this month, but it will now only be seen on British television if scenes showing Knightley being thrown to the floor and kicked are axed.

“The reason we are still in conversation with Clearcast about it is because they believe it is too violent,” said Chris Hirst, managing director of Grey London Advertising Agency, which created The Cut.

“Part of the point of the campaign is to raise awareness about domestic violence, and spark debate, which the advert has done, even if it doesn’t make it on to TV,” he added. (ANI)

Rihanna back in action

New York, Apr 22 (ANI): It seems Rihanna has finally got over her bust-up with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

The sexy songbird was decked out in ’80s club gear at Los Angles hot spot myhouse.

While at the venue, the stunner helped L.A. Clippers star Baron Davis’ celebrate his 30th birthday – and danced, sipped Grey Goose and flirted with Davis and his teammates all night.

Brown was also present at the party.

“The deejay said that he should get his a- kicked!” The New York Daily quoted a partygoer, as saying.

“And the whole crowd cheered – Rihanna included!” the partygoer added. (ANI)

Justin Long ‘still longs’ for Drew Barrymore

New York, April 17 (ANI): Justin Long still yearns for his former girlfriend Drew Barrymore or so it appeared to onlookers as he showed up to support the actress at the premiere of her new movie “Grey Gardens”.

The couple, who had called it quits in July last year after being together for almost a year, had reportedly arrived without their dates and hugged each other for a long time after the screening.

“We’re just friends, but I love that he supports me, and I always support him,” the New York Daily News quoted Barrymore as saying.

“We’re actually making [another] movie together called ‘Going the Distance.’ It’s a comedy – oh my God, it’ll be the best!”, she added.

And while Long also nodded to the “good friends” question, he apparently could not stop gushing over his former lover’s talent.

A partygoer added: “Justin couldn’t stop talking about how amazing Drew is. He’s very clearly into her. Neither Drew nor Justin brought dates, and they gravitated toward one another for the entire evening.” (ANI)

Little Edie Beale gives Drew Barrymore skin issues

London, April 14 (ANI): Drew Barrymore had a bad skin condition to take back home from the sets of her forthcoming movie ‘Grey Garden’ after developing an allergy to the makeup for her role.

The actress revealed she had to deal with a peeling and sore skin after playing the role of ex U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ cousin, a poverty-stricken woman living in a sprawling, rundown New York mansion.

The 34-year-old said preparing to look like old Little Edie Beale was nothing less than a taxing task before and even after the filming.

“Depending on the scenes we were shooting, I’d have to sit in that makeup chair four to six hours every single day,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling New York Post.

“Just ageing the face and hands took four hours. Then, taking it off, was another hour and a half…

“My face suffered as a result. We ended up with skin issues I’d never had before because I developed an allergy to chemicals in isopropyl, the alcohol used in removing cosmetics.

“A constancy of prosthetics also created a sensitivity to adhesives, and our makeup people had to find alternatives,” she added. (ANI)

Sundance Institute’s executive director resigns

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Ken Brecher has resigned as executive director of the Sundance Institute, which oversees the Sundance Film Festival, among other programs. He held the post for 14 years.

His move reflects a further changing of the guard at the Utah-based indie film organization, following Geoff Gilmore’s resignation as the festival’s director in February to become chief creative officer at Tribeca Enterprises, which oversees the Tribeca Film Festival.

Brecher’s resignation was announced Thursday by Wally Weisman, board chair of the Sundance Institute, and will become effective April 30. He will then segue into a new role as strategic adviser for the institute for the next two years.

Recruited by Robert Redford in 1966, Brechner has played a key role in the institute’s core programs. At the Feature Film Program, which encompasses various filmmaker labs, he advocated reaching out to filmmakers in the Middle East; he helped establish the Documentary Fund, which has supported such films as “Born Into Brothels,” “Iraq in Fragments” and “Trouble the Water”; he reconceived the Composers Lab and played a role in the creation of the Film Music Program; he oversaw the Sundance Theater Program, which has supported such plays as “Spring Awakening,” “Passing Strange,” “I Am My Own Wife” and “Grey Gardens”; and, at the festival itself, he encouraged the growth of the documentary and world cinema offerings and the New Frontier program.

Brecher also attracted major grants from the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Doris Duke Foundation, the Open Society Institute, the Annenberg Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, among others, to support the institute’s $26 million annual operating budget.

“Brecher’s efforts,” Weisman said, “will stand the institute in good stead in the years ahead.”

Said Brechner: “I have completed my work in building an outstanding leadership team. I could not be more confident that the institute is now poised for the next phase of its innovative work in supporting independent artists.”

The Sundance Institute said a search for Brecher’s successor will begin shortly.

Katherine Heigl will stay on with “Grey’s Anatomy” if asked to

New Delhi, Mar 30 (ANI): American actress Katherine Heigl has revealed that she will stay on with the US medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” if they want her to.

Heigl, 30, who plays the part of Dr. Izzie Stevens, said during a studio party to mark the ABC show’s 100th episode that it was still too early to tell whether she would be continuing or not, reports the China Daily.

“I was assuming that at one point and I got a lot of shrugged shoulders and shakes of the head, so I don’t know if that’s a yes or a no. No one will tell me and I don’t know how this is going to go,” she said.

“I don’t know if I live or die. I don’t know how Izzie fares. I’m there if Izzie remains part of “Grey’s Anatomy”,” she added.

Heigl’s character survived brain surgery in the March 26 episode, and there has been speculation that her Dr. Izzie Stevens role might be killed off, as she is pursuing her film career.

The Roswell star has, however, revealed that she is comfortable doing both movies and TV shows, and that she can take on big-screen projects during the summer break for “Grey’s Anatomy”.

“I’m more than happy to make that compromise. As my agent likes to say, ‘High-class problems,’” she said.

“I don’t know if I want to continue for five years working 12 months a year, but I can take at least another year or two,” she added. (ANI)

Designer mirrors dismal realities of metropolis life

New Delhi, Mar 19 (ANI): Sombre shades of city life were reflected in designer Nitin Bal Chauhan’s collection for the Autumn/Winter’09 collection at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

Infused with drama, the designer put together a show, which had shades of dark and explored the grim realities of the urban lifestyle at the much awaited five-day fashion extravaganza, which kick started here on Wednesday.

Aptly titled ‘Conditions Apply Part II’, the collection in hues of grey and tinge of light black, lived up to the theme and brought to life successfully the nine stories of vanity, deliverance, teen suicide, mediocrity, accidents, urbanisation, senior citizens, sealing and divorce which centre round the lives of most of the metropolitan people.

Dresses, jackets, suits, skirts, pants and coats in woollen fabrics brought to platform the conditions that applied to those living in an urban set up.

“My creation is inspired by people around that I see leading different kinds of life and different kind of dilemmas. The cuts were very clean. It was lot of experiment with fluidity and structure. The palette is quite dark. There is lot of darkness around, which is the flip side of urban life which is being portrayed in this collection,” said Chauhan.

If the phobias of urban life inspired one designer, the story of silk formed the theme of designer Samant Chauhan’s collection.

Inspired by the Bhagalpur silk, Chauhan saluted the weavers who use the threads to weave together a beautiful body of fabric.

A colour palette of shades of beige brought about a rustic and rich feel to the garments.

Skimpy and slim tunics, coats almost vintage in appeal, frocks, jackets and trousers both for men and women in simple silhouettes brought forth the beauty of silk in various forms.

With 102 designers and around 175 buyers, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is the country’s premiere fashion extravaganza, which brings together the business of fashion and expert designers as well as connoisseurs of lifestyle on a common platform.

This gala event will culminate on March 23. (ANI)

World’s oldest model, 80, still flaunts a 36-26-36 figure!

London, Mar 11 (ANI): Grey haired Daphne Selfe has become Britain’s oldest model to enjoy a career in modelling at the age of 80, with a 36-26-36 figure to boost.

Selfe, who is a grandmother of four, had started her career on the catwalk 60 years ago, and she is still going strong, earning 1,000 pounds a day in campaigns for designer brands such as Dolce and Gabbana.

She has never had cosmetic surgery, and when she started her modelling in 1950, she weighed 10 stone and boasted the statistics 36-24-37, and now she is only a stone and a half-lighter with figures that have barely altered.

The aged model is very much sought after and is currently on the books of top agency Models 1, and she also appeared in Vogue and Marie Claire and has been photographed by the likes of Mario Testino, Nick Knight, and David Bailey.

For Selfe, her modelling career blossomed in later years as she promoted the benefits of going grey.

“My hair is my fortune, it made me more striking,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“Other younger models admire me but they’re not jealous as I’m not a threat. I have a niche all of my own.

“I don’t feel a day over 60. It’s fantastic. I’ll continue modelling until they stop asking. I love it. It’s fun and keeps me young. I was never one for wild parties and I’ve never had any need to get drunk,” she added. (ANI)

Drew Barrymore loved expressing her dark side in ‘Grey Gardens’

Washington, Mar 10 (ANI): American actress Drew Barrymore has revealed that she loved performing her miserable act in her new TV movie Grey Gardens.

Barrymore, 34, further revealed that she is not always the happy-go-lucky person she portrays in most movies and chat shows, and that playing the role of Little Edie Beale gave her the chance to vent out her depression.

“I was excited to bring my own pain to something. I mean, contrary to my happy-go-luckiness, I have so much darkness in there,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling W magazine.

“Playing Edie, I felt like s**t. I thought, ‘I’m afraid beyond anything I’ve ever known. I’m miserable; I’m scared; I feel sick all the time.’

“And I was like, ‘Good! At least I have somewhere to put it…’ I’m not f**kin’ happy all the time. I like making people feel good, but it was great not to have to please anybody,” she stated.

Barrymore admits that preparing for the film, which co-stars Jessica Lange and Jeanne Tripplehorn, reminded her of a stint in rehab when she was a teenager.

She became so immersed in the character of real-life recluse Beale, she locked herself away for six months, and turned her back on friends, newspapers and technology.

The character she plays is of former U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ odd cousin, who lived with her mother in a sprawling, rundown New York mansion. (ANI)

Pakistan groups Taliban in Black, Grey and White categories

Peshawar, Mar. 7 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has classified the Taliban into three categories black, gray and white.

The police investigation manual sees black and gray categories of Taliban prisoners as a serious threat to national security, while the ‘white category’ Talibanis are not considered very harmful.

On Friday, NWEF Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti announced that the only ‘white category Taliban prisoners’ would be released as part of the peace deal in Swat.

“I have directed the home secretary to look into the cases of those prisoners who are in the white category. We will not free prisoners in black and gray categories,” the Daily Times quoted Hoti, as saying.

Under the Sharia-deal, Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Muhammad had demanded the release of all Taliban prisoners arrested during military operations in Swat.

Sources claimed that The NWFP government’s ‘peace envoy’ Afrasiab Khattak and Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain would hold meetings with Mingora’s district administration to sort out the issue of the Taliban prisoners.

The draft of the sharia deal (Nizam-e-Adl) is expected to be approved by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari within a few days.

“In the next few days it will be sent to the (NWFP) governor who will forward to President Zardari. The president has to sign it. It is just a formality,” he said. (ANI)

The Sun reports, gesturing towards Luz, Penn said: “Thanks. Another kid already?”

Madonna was also spotted with her Brazilian ‘toyboy’ at the pre-Oscars party, also attended by Sir Elton John, Sienna Miller and Josh Hartnett.

“She was all over him at the Grey Goose pre-Oscars party at Cecconi’s in Los Angeles,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

SAG organisers confiscate Brad Pitt’s beer before letting him drive!

Washington, January 28 (ANI): Brad Pitt was reportedly left red-faced after he was asked to hand over his beer bottle as he was getting into a car.

The ‘Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ star was recently spotted attending a Grey Goose SAG after-party with partner Angelina Jolie.

According to a Pop Tarts eyewitness, the actor did not realise he was carrying the beer as he headed towards his vehicle, reports Fox News.

And just as he was seen tiptoeing off the back door, organisers requested Pitt to lay down the bottle, to which the embarrassed celebrity obliged.

Pitt was later spotted being driven away from the star-studded evening, which also saw other guests such as Katie Holmes and Sean Penn. (ANI)

Queen told to open Buckingham Palace to the public more often

London, Jan.27 (ANI): A powerful committee of MPs has urged Queen Elizabeth to open Buckingham Palace more often to the public in return for an increase in taxpayers’ money for the upkeep of the Royal palaces.

According to The Telegraph, the decision of Michelle Obama, America’s new First Lady, to pledge to make the White House more accessible was held up as an example by the MPs to the Monarchy, which only opens Buckingham Palace in August and September for fee-paying tours when no member of the family is there: a total of 63 days a year.

Some MPs proposed it opened at weekends throughout the year when the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are elsewhere.

Sir Alan Reid, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, was giving evidence to the Commons public accounts committee after the government rejected an appeal from the Queen to increase the taxpayer-funded grant for the Palaces by four million pounds a year. The grant has been frozen at 15 million pounds for 12 years.

Sir Alan said that members of the Royal Family are in residence at the Queen’s London home for around 300 days of the year with the Queen at Buckingham Palace three to four days a week.

He said it was not practical for members of the public to wander around the royal residence during a state visit while a foreign head of state was in the building.

But Committee Chairman Edward Leigh countered by saying: “You cannot close the whole palace because the Duke of York is sitting in his flat upstairs.”

The plight of some of the palaces, whose maintenance is paid for by the taxpayer, is causing growing concern to the Queen.

The Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore, near Windsor Castle, which houses the tomb of Queen Victoria, has been designated by English Heritage as “at risk” after part of the ceiling fell in.

A large stretch of roof at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace also needs replacing after some masonry fell off narrowly missing the car owned by the Princess Royal.

Some of the grandest state rooms at Buckingham Palace have not been redecorated since the Queen came to the throne in 1952.

The ornate Blue Room, has now turned a pale shadow of grey. The palace wiring, which should have been replaced 10 years ago, was installed in 1949.

Leaks in the roof of the palace’s picture gallery have been identified as a threat to works by masters such as Rembrandt. The crumbling façades on all sides of the quadrangle at Buckingham Palace are in need of maintenance. The work, which is classed as urgent because of the potential danger to those walking underneath, will cost an estimated 3m pounds over five years

The hearing was called by the committee after a report by the National Audit Office criticised the Government’s handling of the maintenance backlog. (ANI)
