Wikimedia starts purging pornography following media expose

Washington, May 8 (ANI): Wikimedia, Wikipedia’s parent company, has started an online purging activity to get rid of sexually explicit content on the website following a report by an American TV news network.

The move followed a report by FoxNews.com, which asked a dozen donor companies, including Google, Microsoft””s Bing, Yahoo!, Open Society Institute, Ford Foundation, Best Buy, USA Networks and Craigslist Foundation, if they were aware of the highly pornographic material that was present on the website.

Wikipedia, an online encyclopaedia, is easily accessible to the scores of children across the world. The website could easily provide access to such pictures – including close-ups of genitalia and people having sex and masturbating. There””s even a “nude children” category.

“We have had a problem with images being placed into inappropriate categories, so that viewers were exposed in unexpected ways to sexual content. Image categorization should be done in such a way that readers are not exposed unexpectedly to content that may be offensive,” FoxNews.com quoted Jimmy Wales, the president of the Wikimedia Foundation, as writing in a post.

“I expect the board to issue a statement within a few days offering a general philosophical support for the serious enforcement of policy on this issue. The Board normally does not get involved with detailed content decisions; I don””t expect that to change,” he wrote elsewhere.

A report by FoxNews.com revealed that Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger had sent a letter to the FBI regarding the pornographic material being posted on the website.

The FBI has not commented on whether it will pursue an investigation.

Although the purging process is in full flow, there are still pictures that are available on the website, marked for deletion.

Wales himself marked hundreds of images for deletion, all of which involved graphic images of sex acts. (ANI)

Americans turn to Al-Jazeera for raw images of war: Study

Phoenix, Apr 20(ANI): A new study has found that most of those who use the English-language Al-Jazeera website are from the U.S., Canada, the U.K and Australia.

According to the study by Shahira Fahmy, a journalism professor at the University of Arizona, respondents indicated that they appreciate the graphic pictures of war they find on the site that they don”t see in the mainstream media.

Findings suggested that nine out of 10 of those surveyed support the broadcasting of graphic visuals, including that of the Iraq War and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

“Younger audiences, especially the ‘YouTube’ generation, seek graphic visual images in a far different way than audiences did before the World Wide Web,” The University of Arizona News quoted Fahmy, as saying.

“This has serious implications for the news media. I think it’s time for media organizations to amend their ethical codes to allow for more graphic visuals in an effort to provide a more comprehensive and realistic view of war and conflict to U.S. audiences,” he added.

The study also found that almost 90 percent people visit the website because it provides visual information that cannot be found in the Western media.

“CNN and other Western media have abdicated their journalistic responsibility to provide balanced, objective news and have instead become a voice of the government – not controlled by the government but controlled by the big multinational multimedia conglomerates that own them and by their own self censorship,” one user said.

The study titled “When Blood Becomes Cheaper than a Bottle of Water: How Viewers of the English Version of Al-Jazeera Website Judge Graphic Images of Conflict” was published this month’s journal Media, War and Conflict. (ANI)

‘Dickhead’ road safety ads draw criticism

The Victorian Opposition has criticised the Government’s latest road safety campaign, labelling it an insult to school teachers.

The internet campaign says “don’t be a dickhead, wear your seatbelt”, and “don’t be a dickhead, don’t use your phone”.

One ad shows a girl giving the camera the finger, the other shows a man bashing a laptop.

The Government hopes the ad will be shared on social networking sites.

But the Opposition’s transport spokesman, Terry Mulder, says it sends a mixed message.

“It’s hard enough now for teachers to get the respect message through with children,” he said.

“But to have a Government running this out alongside the work that they’re doing, I think is an insult to teachers and anybody who is working with children.”

He said the Premier would not use that sort of language in a classroom and it is an “appalling” message to send.

The State Government is defending the use of the term.

Finance and Water minister Tim Holding says it is a worthy campaign.

“Our road safety campaigns in Victoria have always provoked debate and discussion and sometimes it’s because of the graphic images that have been presented, sometimes it’s the use of humour, controversy,” he said.

“Whatever it is, indeed it’s already promoted debate.”

The Opposition says the ads will will undermine the government’s respect agenda.

But the Respect Minister Justin Madden says he does not have a problem with the campaign.

“Anybody who puts somebody else’s life at risk, or their own life, by the way they drive or conduct themselves on the road is no doubt going to be called a lot of things,” he said.

“What is important here is that there is sufficient respect for people to acknowledge that they have to take care of themselves and others, as part of the responsibility of driving.”

Prosecution witness Vincenza Liviero took the stand behind closed doors in the trial of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito in Perugia for the murder of Meredith kercher.

Ms Liviero told reporters at the end of the hearing: “It was an action carried out by more than two hands, and there was sexual violence.”

“There were so many wounds, caused by a knife and caused by hands,” prosecuting lawyer Francesco Maresca said. “The only way they could have been from one person is if that person had three or four hands.”

A second witness, gynaecologist and prosecution consultant Mauro Marchionni, also testified that the bruises on Miss Kercher’s body were not compatible with consensual sex, Maresca said.

Graphic images from the post-mortem examination were shown during the hearing. Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini said Knox did not look at them and kept her head down. Sollecito glanced at them sporadically, he said.

On Friday, coroner Luca Lalli, who performed the post-mortem examination, testified he couldn’t say with certainty whether Miss Kercher had been raped, though bruises and cuts on her face, neck, hands and legs suggested violence during intercourse.

Knoz and Sollecito are being tried on charges of murder and sexual violence for the 2007 death of Leeds University student Meredith.

A third suspect, Ivory Coast national Rudy Hermann Guede, was convicted on identical charges last year after a ‘fast-track’ trial and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ms Liviero’s testimony was ruled closed to the public and press to comply with a request from Miss Kercher’s family to preserve the victim’s memory.

Rihanna, Chris Brown fight re-enacted in a video

London, Mar 21 (ANI): American ‘Teen empowering group’ DoSomething.org, formed to help domestic violence victims, has recreated the alleged fight between Rihanna and Chris Brown in a public service address flick.

Media reports that Rihanna was allegedly attacked by Brown and left with horrific injuries raised a lot of questions in the minds of young fans.

With many fans turning against Brown for his appalling act, the Teen Empowering group decided to make a flick based on the facts gathered from the LAPD report, in a bid to urge victims of domestic violence to come forward.

The group brought to light the shocking fact that one in every three is a victim of domestic violence.

The flick begins with a warning about graphic images before showing a couple in a car involved in a fight.

And it ends with a message urging people suffering from domestic violence to come forward and report it.

Meanwhile, Brown has been charged with two felony counts and released on a bail of 50,000 dollars until a hearing on April 6. (ANI)
