Stosur stunned by first Grand Slam final after recovering from career ending illness

Paris, June 4(ANI): French Open finalist Samantha Stosur insists that she never imagined that she would reach a Grand Slam Final when she was battling a career ending illness three years ago.

Stosur’s stunning success in Paris is a world away from 2007, when Lyme disease kept her out for 10 months.

“When I was out, I never let myself doubt the fact that I would return. Obviously, I had no idea what was going to happen,” The Daily Express quoted Stosur, as saying.

“I’d never wish to go through any of that ever again, but, in hindsight, who knows what it actually did for me? Since then, I”ve had the best time of my career, best results, and I”m playing the best.”

“So maybe, looking back, taking all that time out was a good thing, but, obviously, when I was in it, I didn”t see it like that at all,” she added.

She further said that the illness gave her a new perspective on what she was able to do and how much she loved playing tennis.

“So without walking away, maybe I wouldn”t have seen that and then really thought, ‘Okay, when I come back I”m going to make the most of every chance every day and see how good I can get and just try and become the best player I could be’,” Stosur said.

The 26-year-old has had a remarkable run at the French Open so far, defeating four-time champion Justine Henin, World No. 1 Serena Williams and former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic to make it to the final.

She will now play Italy’s Francesca Schiavone in what will be both women’s maiden Grand Slam finals. (ANI)

Henman backs Murray to win Wimbledon

London, May 20(ANI): Former British tennis star Tim Henman has backed World No. 4 Andy Murray to break his Grand Slam duck this year at Wimbledon next month.

“I really think Wimbledon could be Murray’s,” The Sun quoted Henman, as saying.

“He’s improved, got 12 months more experience and has every chance of winning what would be his first Slam,” he added.

The 22-year-old was a beaten semi-finalist in 2009, where Andy Roddick went through to the final in four sets.

Murray has reached two Grand Slam finals, finishing runner-up to World No. 1 Roger Federer both times at the 2008 US Open and the Australian Open in January.

His next tournament will be the French Open, which begins on Sunday. (ANI)

Federer flies home with Wimbledon Centre Court net

London, July 7 (ANI): Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer flew home Monday with the gift of the Centre Court net.

Having made history with a 15th Grand Slam win in beating Andy Roddick, the Daily Express quoted Federer as saying that he had no intention of slowing up even though he is soon to become a father.

“I’ve been in 17 Grand Slam finals so if I do that again, I don’t think I’m going to lose every one I’ll be in. I’ll definitely win a few,” he said. (ANI)

Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 Saturday to claim her third Wimbledon title and end a trophy dry spell on the grass which stretched back to 2003.

The younger of the American sibling pair claimed her 11th major to double her Grand Slam total for 2009 after starting the year with an Australian Open trophy.

Serena, seeded second to her 29-year-old sister’s third, improved her record against her relative in Grand Slam finals to 6-2.

“It feels so amazing to have the trophy again,” said the winner of a contest lasting for just under 90 minutes. “I can’t believe I’m holding it and Venus isn’t.”

“Today Serena was too good she had an answer for everything,” said the elder sister.

“Serena played the best tennis today. The loss hasn’t’ set in, I’m still smiling. I’ve had so many great times here and am looking forward to next year here. I love what I do and I love playing these finals.”

Serena through to Wimbledon final

London, July 2 (DPA) Dinara Safina is all that stands in the way of a fourth Williams sisters Wimbledon final after second seed Serena Williams held off Russian Elena Dementieva 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 8-6 in their semi-final Thursday.
Top-seeded world number one Safina will hope to step up when she next takes on five-time champion Venus Williams.

Against Serena, two-time 2004 Grand Slam finalist Dementieva failed on a match point in the tenth game of the third set as Williams returned a loose volley which hit the top of the net but landed good.

The American then broke for 7-6 as the air went out of her Russian opponent, with two-time winner Williams reaching her second title match in three years on her own first winning chance.

“It was really, really tough,” said Williams, holder of 10 titles at the majors. “When I faced that match point (on her own serve) I was thinking ace.

“I stayed calm and positive. I wasn’t on my best game, but we gave the crowd a wonderful match.”

The contest ran for just over two and a quarter-hours, with Williams hitting 20 aces and 43 winners as she broke her Russian opponent five times.

Dementieva converted on three of ten opportunities.

Safina has lost in three Grand Slam finals, beginning with the French Open a year ago. She was also beaten by Serena Williams at the Australian Open and went out to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros a month ago.

Nadal outshines Federer to clinch Australian Open

Melbourne, Feb.1 (ANI): Rafael Nadal clinched the Australian Open final against Roger Federer claiming his first hard-court Grand Slam title and stopping the Swiss seeking to equal the all-time Majors record on Sunday.

With the latest win Nadal, the first Spanish male winner of the tournament, moves to six Grand Slams, increasing his lead at the top of the rankings and earning a shot at sweeping the season’s majors.

The World No.1 Nadal had earlier played Fernando Verdasco in the semi-finals to take the gripping five-setter 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-2 in four hours and 23 minutes.

Federer now remains on 13 Grand Slams, one behind Pete Sampras, and with an enduring mental block against the Spaniard who has now beaten him in their last three Grand Slam finals.

The two were meeting for the first time since last year’s epic Wimbledon final, when Nadal ended Federer’s five-year hold on the trophy before deposing him as world number one.

They have now contested seven Grand Slam finals with Nadal holding a 5-2 edge in the meetings and 13-6 overall. But he had his last hard-court win over Federer in 2006 and had never reached a Grand Slam final on the surface.

On Sunday, playing Nadal in the Australian Open Finals, Federer sprayed errors and made a nervous start and double-faulted on break point before handing over the first set. He continued to look uncomfortable in the second and skied a forehand to go a break down, but then broke back and converted the fifth break point in a marathon eighth game.

On the other hand, Nadal saved six break points in the third with some nerveless tennis and he played the perfect tie-break, intercepting a backhand pass with a superb volley to set up three set points.

The switch in tactics brought immediate dividends as Federer swept through the fourth set but he tightened up in a tense decider and went a break down in the fourth game.ederer saved two championship points at 5-2.

Meanwhile, there was drama for a short while when a fan called “out” during a rally, causing the Swiss to stop playing and set up a third.

It looked too much for Federer and he drove a forehand long as Nadal collapsed to the floor in delight. (ANI)
