Proteas 800 m woman gold medallist accused of being a man

Berlin (Germany), Aug.21 (ANI): South Africa’s 18-year-old 800 m gold medallist Caster Semenya has caused a sensation of sorts at the World Championships being held here.

Not only has she recorded the fastest time of the year by a woman, but she is also being called a man.ow, her family has slammed these claims, saying: “It is God who made her look that way, but she is a girl.”

According to The Sun, muscular Caster could be stripped of her medal after athletics bosses ordered a “gender verification test”.

She has suffered “years of teasing” over her masculine looks, say her family.

Mum Dorcus, 40, who refers to her daughter by her African name and raised her in the village of Seshego in Limpopo province, yesterday defended the Berlin victory.

She said: “I am not worried what they say because I know who and what my child is.

“Mokgadi Caster is a girl – and no one can change that. So I am not concerned about such things. If you go to our village and ask any of the neighbours, they will tell you she is a girl.”

The teen’s gran, Maphuthi Sekgala, 80, added: “I know she’s a woman. I helped raise her myself. She called me after the heats and told me that they think she’s a man. But it is God who made her look that way. What can I do when they call her a man when she’s not really a man?”

Maphuthi said: “If the teasing hurt her, she kept the hurt to herself and didn’t show what she was feeling.”

Caster’s father Jacob also pleaded with the athletics authorities to leave his daughter alone.

He said: “She is my little girl. I raised her and I have never doubted her gender. She is a woman and I can repeat that a million times.” (ANI)

World’s largest and most technologically advanced telescope to debut on July 24

Washington, July 14 (ANI): The world’s largest, most technologically advanced telescope is all set to make its formal debut on July 24 in Spain’s Canary Islands.

Known as the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the telescope has a 10.4-meter diameter mirror, and has more light-collecting area than any other telescope.

Perched 7,874 feet above sea level on a mountain on the island of La Palma, the GTC has 6 square meters more light collecting area than any of the roughly one dozen 8- to 10-meter telescopes worldwide.

With a mirror composed of 36 hexagonal segments thought to have the smoothest surfaces ever made, it is also the world’s most technologically advanced optical telescope.

Sensors keep the mirrors aligned to counteract the force of gravity, with the result that they act as a single surface, even as the telescope is rotated and aligned in place.

According to Stan Dermott, chairman of UF’s (University of Florida’s) astronomy department, the GTC’s size and technical attributes enable it not only to gather more light than any other telescope, but also resolve the light into sharper and clearer focus.

“For astronomers, those capabilities make it a powerful tool to study cosmic origins – the early days of the universe and the very early moments in the mysterious births of stars, planets and galaxies,” he said.

“The interpretation of the structure of the disks where new planets form is highly dependent on the quality of the image,” he said, adding that the GTC also will enable the discoveries of new planets, possibly including the first habitable planet.

At the inauguration of the telescope, officials and astronomers from the University of Florida, the only US institution that is part of the project, will join more than 500 astronomers, journalists and celebrities in a ceremony presided over by Spain’s King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia. (ANI)

Liam and Noel renew bonds over posh Mexican tequila

London, May 18 (ANI): Just when the squabbling Gallagher brothers-Liam and Noel-started on their usual bickering during their recent tour, they have found a way to tolerate each other-their common liking for luxury Gran Patron tequila in South America.

The ‘Oasis’ stars have stopped bickering after discovering the posh Mexican tequila.

Currently on tour in Brazil, the brother duo has become hooked on the 1,500 pounds-a-bottle spirit, ever since they realised that they could gulp down dozens of shots without any ill-effects the next day.

A source has revealed that their discovery has forged a new bond between Liam, 36, and Noel, 41, who were getting to the usual “bickering stage” of the tour.

“You could say Patron has saved the tour. Liam and Noel were getting to the stage where they were bickering like schoolgirls, as seems to happen on every tour,” the Daily Star quoted the source as saying.

“Liam was drinking with the band and Noel was trying to stay clear of him.

“Then they discovered Patron and since then they haven’t looked back. They can get through a bottle after a gig, have a laugh together and get up without a headache.

“It’s amazing. They say it’s like -nothing they’ve ever drunk before.

“They are becoming Patron’s biggest fans and have been seeking out ever more expensive bottles,” the source added. (ANI)

Springsteen pipped Peter Gabriel with Down To Earth from Wall-E, Jamie Cullum’s title track from Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, Miley Cyrus with I Thought I Lost You from Bolt, and Beyonce with Cadillac Records’ Once In A Lifetime to land the honour.

The rocker was more delighted for being short-listed in the same category as Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed movie.
