Hamilton looks for clean sweep against Red Bull heroes in Brit GP

London, May 19 (ANI): Formula One 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton has said that he wants revenge in the form a clean sweep against the Red Bulls in next month”s British Grand Prix.

The Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are dominating their rivals, starting all six rounds from pole and winning three times.

“It was a bit too easy for Red Bull. They are a long way ahead but I have a lot of belief and faith in my team. I still reckon we can win both championships. We”re the best team,” The Sun quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Panel defends water report delay

The panel investigating water quality concerns in Tasmania’s north-east has defended the delay in making the results of the investigation public.

St Helens GP Alison Bleaney was the first to raise concerns about the quality of water in the George River.

She conducted her own tests of the water and says they reveal traces of a toxin found in some tree plantantions.

The convenor of the State Government-appointed George River Water Quality panel, John Ramsay, says Dr Bleaney’s report will be made public at the same time as other relevant reports.

“The investigation is progressing well, but there are a lot of documents to get through,” he said, “some 38 documents from the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment, 45 documents from the Department of Health and Human Services.”

The information will be posted on the panel’s website when it reports to the Government at the end of the month.

Button hits back at former Renault boss Briatore

London, May 8 (ANI): Formula One champion Jenson Button has hit back at former Renault boss Flavio Briatore’s claim that he is not one of the world’s top five drivers.

“It did make me laugh when I read what Flavio said. He likes to be outspoken, but I am very happy. I have done everything I set out to do when I started racing in F1. I am leading the championship and he is not even in the sport,” he said.

“I am sat here as the world champion, I’ve won two races this year, I’m all right. It doesn’t upset me – he has got to try a bit harder than that. But I don’t know what he was thinking as I thought we got on all right,” The Sun quoted Button, as saying.

Button, 30, had two difficult years when Briatore, who is out of the sport after fixing the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, was his Benetton/Renault boss in 2001-02.

But Button reckons that the bad times have made him a better driver.

“It was the roughest time of my career but it was a learning curve. They are important years and some of us go through more than others. That was a tough time in my career but I wouldn’t change it. You need the bad days to make you realise it is not always a walk in the park,” he said.

Button unveiled a plaque on champions” avenue at the Circuit de Catalunya yesterday commemorating his title triumph with Brawn GP last year, and said he is not feeling any pressure despite the stunning start with his new team. (ANI)

Sex wonder pill set to make premature ejaculation history hits UK shelves

London, April 26 (ANI): The first pill proven to prevent premature ejaculation is about to launch in the UK.

The drug, taken one to three hours before sex, works by altering seratonin levels in the brain, which helps a man to have more control over his moment of climax.

Priligy has been shown to make men last three times as long.

However, it is expensive – at 76 pounds for a pack of three Priligy 30mg tablets.

Priligy, which is available for men aged 18 to 64, is already in the markets of some European countries. It will be sold exclusively online, for private prescriptions only.

The drug can”t be used after boozing as this increases the risk of side effects.

Men will be able to get a private prescription for Priligy following an online consultation at Lloyds-pharmacy.com.

“Priligy has the potential to do as much for men”s sexual health as Viagra,” the Sun quoted Nitin Makadia, head of male sexual health at Lloyds-pharmacy, as saying.

“It will give sufferers a chance to improve the quality of their relationships and their general wellbeing.

“It has been well received by men elsewhere in Europe and we are really pleased to be bringing this treatment to the UK.

“Some men are understandably reluctant to discuss the problem with their GP so we are removing this barrier to treatment,” Makadia added. (ANI)

Karun Chandhok given five-place grid penalty for Chinese GP

Shanghai, Apr 17(ANI): Indian driver Karun Chandhok has been handed over a five-place grid penalty for Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai after the Hispania Racing Team broke a seal on his car’s gearbox following Friday practice sessions.

The 26-year-old must take a penalty, as the team opened the gearbox to work on it without an FIA official in attendance, which is a breach of regulations.

However, the penalty is unlikely to affect the rookie driver, who finished 24th and last after the qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit, Xinhua news agency reports.

Chandhok and his team-mate Bruno Senna were 15th and 16th respectively in the Malaysian Grand Prix, a fortnight ago, and have only once qualified off the back row of the grid in three attempts. (ANI)

Grant money allocation decided soon

Monash University says it will soon find out which GP clinics in Gippsland will share in $1.1 million to upgrade their training rooms.

The Federal Government has confirmed the grant but is yet to reveal which clinics will get the funding.

The Director of the Gippsland Regional Clinical School, Associate Professor Daryl Pedler, says about 15 clinics are expected to share in the funding.

He says the GP clinics that upgrade their training rooms will be able to offer more internships.

“Most of the general practices around the area are exceedingly busy and a lot of their rooms are used to a very high level and the common statement was that we really need help to do this,” he said.

“We want to supply the teaching but without this extra support supplying the teaching will be very difficult.”

Conviction for 6 phony sick certificates

A former Darwin IT worker at the Defence Department has pleaded guilty to using forged documents for sick leave.

The Darwin Magistrates Court heard Michael Wise, 32, took a total of 10 days’ sick leave over a three-year period.

He provided his employer with six doctors certificates, but his boss became suspicious and realised the certificates were identical, except for the date.

She called the doctor on the certificate, who confirmed Wise had not visited the GP on those dates.

The court heard Wise was paid more than $2000 for his time off.

His lawyer said he was depressed and had done something “very stupid”.

He said Wise was extremely embarrassed and could no longer work in places requiring security clearance.

He was convicted and put on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Clancy’s heroes team up to fight terrorism

American espionage writer Tom Clancy is bringing all his fictional characters together into one novel about modern terrorism.

Dead Or Alive, Clancy’s first book in seven years, will be published in December.

“This is Tom Clancy for the first time bringing all his all-stars together, including Jack Ryan,” said Ivan Held, president of Penguin’s GP Putnam’s Sons.

Held said the novel will take in the last quarter century of Clancy’s literary characters.

“They will be going after modern terrorism,” he said.

The 62-year-old bestselling author is best known for his books Patriot Games, The Hunt For Red October, Clear And Present Danger and The Sum Of All Fears.

All were later turned into films.

Patient demands more emergency dept doctors

There are claims the Warragul Hospital’s emergency department needs more than one GP at night-time, after a woman who was twice sent home later found she had gangrenous bladder stones.

Newborough woman Yasmin Plichta says she was sent home from the hospital twice last month, despite having excruciating pain in her stomach and high blood pressure.

She says a surgeon later found her bladder stones had turned gangrenous and said it could have turned into the potentially deadly disease septicaemia.

Ms Plichta says an ultrasound would have detected the gangrene.

“I focus on the emergency department, there’s one GP taking care of the entire Baw Baw Shire externally and internally doing the hospital rounds that is humanly impossible,” she said.

The West Gippsland Healthcare Group’s CEO, Ormond Pearson, says the Warragul Hospital cannot afford more than one doctor in the emergency department at night.

“There’s no doubt that we would like to have more senior medical officers available in our emergency department 24-hours-a-day but we are a public health service and we have funding issues and if the Government was able to fund more senior staff to be available in our emergency department we’d be absolutely delighted,” he said.

Mercedes GP chief backs Schumacher despite flop comeback

London, Apr 1(ANI): Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has been given a vote of confidence by his Mercedes Grand Prix team chief Norbert Haug despite a nightmare start to his comeback.

Schumacher finished sixth and 10th in his first two races in Bahrain and Australia after three years out of the sport, and has also been outraced by team-mate Nico Rosberg.

However, Haug insisted: “Michael is as good as ever. He has got it still.”

“He could sit on his sofa saying, ”Nobody won more than I did” – but this is his passion. But he is a more relaxed guy than ever, he has fun, he is a very good team member, team player,” The Sun quoted Haug, as saying.

Haug further said that Schumacher is back in the F1 to be competitive, and reiterated his claims that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was blocking the German in qualifying last Saturday.

“If you look at the times, if you look at qualifying, Michael was handicapped behind Alonso. It is fair to say it was a very comparable lap to Nico, who I think is one of the highest-rated guys of the current generation, with four years” experience,” Haug said.

“We have one of the strongest driver pairings in the field. It is up to us to improve the package further. It is fair to say we improved it on this track compared to Bahrain,” he added. (ANI)

‘Disturbing’ results from Victorian worker health checks

Eight hundred Victorian workers have been instructed to consult a doctor immediately, after undergoing a workplace health check.

Over the past year, 100,000 State Government-funded checks have been completed.

Fifty per cent of men and 30 per cent of women were found to be at risk of developing diabetes.

The Health Minister, Daniel Andrews, says the results are disturbing.

“Eight hundred people out of that group needed to see a doctor within 24 hours,” he said.

“Almost one in two males in the program had elevated risks, high or very high risks of developing Type 2 diabetes or a heart disease issue, and almost a third of females.”

Mr Andrews said fewer than one in 10 people who took the test, ate enough fruit and vegetables.

“It’s about giving people the advice, the understanding that they need to act,” he said.

“Then, with the support of their GP, with the support of the Victorian health system, to bring about the lifestyle changes they need, to act on those risk factors.”

Button wants to become first Brit to retain Formula One crown

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Ace racer Jenson Button wants to enter the record books by becoming the first Briton to retain the Formula One crown.

Button knows that winning successive titles will be difficult, as only eight drivers have managed the feat so far.

But he could also become the first racer in 53 years to win the championships with two different teams since Juan Manuel Fangio, The Sun reports.

“It would be an incredible achievement to win back-to-back titles with two different teams. As a champion, you want to retain your title; only 30 per cent of drivers do it. But it’s never easy, especially fighting against these exceptional drivers,” Button said.

“You always think the title might be on but it’s a long season. We don’t come away from Australia thinking we can win the next race in Malaysia on Sunday and it will be easy. It’s not like that,” he added.

Button, who took over as F1 champion with Brawn GP last year, is third in the drivers’ standings following up a seventh place in Bahrain with his triumph in Albert Park.

Button is hopeful of challenging his rivals in this Sunday’s Malaysian race where he won in a rain-lashed, shortened Grand Prix last year.

“Some people will say the victory in Melbourne was lucky but you can’t be lucky that many times. We made the right call at the right time. Vettel had the quickest car but they weren’t able to make the most of it,” Button said. (ANI)

Webber calls by home before Aust GP

Hundreds of people have gathered in Queanbeyan, south-east of Canberra, to welcome home Australian Formula One star Mark Webber.

They packed the main street to cheer Webber who made his breakthrough behind the wheel last year winning both the German and Brazilian Grand Prix.

A civic reception has also been held at the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre.

Webber is only planning a quick home visit with the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.

GP inquiry needs scrutiny: Premier

Tasmania’s Premier David Bartlett says the Medical Council should be scrutinised over its handling of complaints against a north-east GP.

The council has been investigating Scottsdale’s Dr Paul McGinity for the past year, after 21 compalints were made about his patient care.

The Council said it would finish the investigation last December.

Mr Bartlett says it is time for closer scrutiny of the Medical Council.

“I’d like to see scrutiny on them so that Tasmanians can have genuine confidence in what they are doing,” he said.

“I don’t know at this stage whether the Medical Council of Tasmania comes under the new ethics commission legislation but, if it doesn’t, I’d be very happy to take a look at it.”

Fears Rudd health plan to put pressure on resources

The South Australian branch of the Rural Doctors Association says a Federal Government plan to train extra doctors could put pressure on infrastructure and training providers.

The Government will spend $632 million over the next decade funding hundreds of extra GP and specialist places.

The association’s vice-president, Peter Rischbieth, has welcomed news that a large number of the places will be in rural and regional areas.

However, he says current infrastructure may not cope.

“To teach and train the younger doctors for the future you need to have competent supervisors and training positions available,” he said.

“So we need to have the infrastructure supports, we need to have rooms, computers and staff supports to help with the junior doctors of the future.”

Work still needed to keep GPs

A general practitioner training provider in Gippsland says the region will still have to work to keep GPs under a $630 million Federal Government plan.

The Government plans to fund hundreds more GP and specialist training places in rural and regional areas over the next decade.

The chief executive of Get GP, Susan Lloyd, says that could mean extra training places in Gippsland.

But she says the community will still have to convince graduates to stay in the area after they complete their training.

“Within the Gippsland region it’s a wonderful announcement that we need to make sure that we can optimise and work with our community to ensure that we can take this as an opportunity but also then encourage these graduates and medical professionals to stay within our rural and remote regions,” she said.

Button’s former boss asks him to up his game to beat Hamilton

London, Mar 16 (ANI): Jenson Button’s former boss and managing director of Mercedes GP, Nick Fry, has warned the Formula One champ that he will have to up his game if he wants to beat McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes GP is the new incarnation of the Brawn squad that took Button to the title last year.

Following Button’s seventh place finish to Hamilton’s third in Bahrain, Fry said: “There’s clearly a gap that Jenson is going to have to close. It’s absolutely self-evident.”

“I’m sure he’ll be looking after the Bahrain weekend at what he can do about it. Lewis does have home team advantage at the moment but the longer Jenson stays with the team, the more that reason goes away,” The Sun quoted Fry, as saying.

“He’ll have to be looking at all the aspects of his own performance, not only how he drives but also the way he works with the team. Jenson will know all those things and he has got to work hard,” he said.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh feels Button will improve his performance at the next race in Australia.

Whitmarsh said: “I think in fairness Jenson was disappointed with his qualifying. And in the race he didn’t get clean air. He was quicker than the Mercedes of Michael Schumacher but couldn’t get past him, just as Lewis could not get past the other Mercedes of Nico Rosberg earlier on.” (ANI)

Sound reasons for CT scans says GP body

West Australian doctors are being encouraged to use clinical judgement when ordering CT scans.

A new report from the Medicare watchdog, the Professional Services Review, has found several cases of doctors ordering high radiation CT scans without clinical justification.

CT scans take three dimensional pictures of the body and can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers and cardiovascular disease but they increase the risk of cancer by one in a thousand.

The chairman of the WA Faculty of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Peter Maguire says patients expect the scans and doctors order the scans to legally protect themselves.

But, Dr Maguire says doctors should not feel pressured into ordering the scans.

“The old fashioned clinical judgement is not to be ignored and doctors are trained to sort problems out without investigations and plain x-rays may be sufficient in certain circumstances.”

He says doctors order the scans to ensure they have not misdiagnosed a patient.

“People have grown to expect CT scans for the investigation of various things and patients often seem disappointed if you say it is not necessary.”

Button launches into f-word rage rant over title bid

London, Aug.28 (ANI): Jenson Button launched into a furious f-word rant over his title bid last night.

The Formula One championship pacesetter was fuming after his desire to win the title was questioned, reports The Sun.

Asked to react to claims his recent form suggested he did not want to win the drivers’ crown, Button lost his rag.

The Brawn GP star, who has seen his lead cut to 18 points after four races without a victory, blasted:

“I don’t think people are saying that seriously. Who would possibly say that? Does Jenson want to win the title or not? It is a pretty silly question isn’t it?

“Why the f*** am I here? That is not a question is it? Does he want to win the title? No, I want to finish second or third. What I would like to do now is stand up and walk away, have a good weekend and then we will talk about it afterwards. When you have one bad race there are always silly questions.”

Earlier Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel had pumped up the pressure on Button by telling him: You have gone off the boil!

The German ace, 22 reckons Button’s losing streak proves he is feeling the heat of the title battle.

He declared: “I am not giving up on the title.

Button has managed just 11 points in the last four grands prix, after winning six of the previous seven. (ANI)

Chain gang backs jailed Indian doctor

Edinburgh (Scotland), May 15 (ANI): Campaigners chained themselves together on Thursday as part of a worldwide call for the release of a doctor jailed for speaking out about poverty.

Dr Binayak Sen worked with the poorest people in central India for decades, but was jailed two years ago for speaking up for his patients.

The campaigners – who included MSP and GP Richard Simpson – dressed in white coats and masks to protest outside the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Amnesty International’s Scottish programme director John Watson said: “Dr Sen has worked with the poor people in central India for decades. He has won international acclaim and awards.”

The organisation considers his sentence to be based on trumped-up charges related to his political work. (ANI)
