UPDATE 4-Google confident of getting China web license

SUN VALLEY, Idaho, July 8 (Reuters) – Google Inc (GOOG.O) Chief Executive Eric Schmidt expressed confidence the company will secure a license to operate a website in China, confounding speculation Beijing may shut down its flagship site there.

Schmidt, addressing executives and financiers at an annual gathering of the industry’s movers and shakers in the Idaho mountain resort of Sun Valley, said he expected Beijing to renew its license to operate a website in the world’s largest Internet market, but offered no timeframe.

Analysts said Google’s decision to stop automatically rerouting users to its uncensored search page showed a softening of stance and willingness to compromise to maintain a foothold in China, the world’s largest Internet market by users.

“We would expect we would get the necessary license,” Schmidt said. “We now expect to get a renewal.”

Google stunned markets and consumers in January when it warned it might quit the country, saying it would not provide the censored search results that China requires.

The company’s row with the Chinese government over Internet censorship and hacking attacks added to a burst of tensions between Washington and Beijing, which also saw diplomatic spats over China’s currency, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and Tibet.

But tensions have subsided in recent months. On Thursday the Obama administration declined to label China a currency manipulator, and a decision to allow Google to keep its Chinese website could remove another source of friction.

In March, Google began to redirect visitors to its China website to a search site in Hong Kong that provided uncensored results. [ID:nSGE60C01H] [ID:nLDE66603E]

But last week, Google said it would stop automatically rerouting users after Beijing indicated it would not renew its Internet Content Provider license if it continued to do so.

“The government views the January announcement as a loss of face,” said Edward Yu, chief executive of Beijing-based research firm Analysys International, speaking before Schmidt’s comments.

“But because Google has now made this move, there is a chance they will most probably meet in the middle and Google will get the license.”

NO DEADLINE

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on Wednesday that it was reviewing Google’s license renewal application but gave no deadline for completion. [ID:nTOE66602R]

Two similar stand-offs in the past, one involving major PC makers like HP (HPQ.N) and Dell (DELL.O), and the other global chip leader Intel (INTC.O), ended in compromises that saw Beijing back down under huge international pressure.

Analysts and investors have discounted a severe curtailment of Google’s business in the world’s No.3 economy.

Its stock has slid more than 26 percent this year, hit partly by fears that its stance against censorship will incense a Chinese government intent on maintaining control over the flow of information within its borders.

By contrast, local search leader Baidu Inc (BIDU.O) has seen its stock soar about 75 percent since Google’s announcement on investor hopes for a big market share gain.

An outright license rejection — as expected by some analysts — could spell future trouble for Google’s non-search businesses in China, such as Android-based mobile phones, now carried by the nation’s largest telecoms carriers. [ID:nTOE65T04U]

Google’s search business in China accounts for a tiny slice of the company’s $24 billion in annual revenue. Analyst estimates of Google’s annual revenue in China range from $300 million to $600 million, but long-term growth prospects are key.

Google now operates a landing page for its Google.cn website and clicking anywhere on the page brings the user to the Google.com.hk site. But if Beijing refuses to renew its license, the site would be effectively shut down.

Schmidt’s comments come halfway through what has been a tumultuous year for the company, as the world’s No.1 search leader deepened its rivalry with iPhone-maker Apple (AAPL.O) and social network Facebook.

Google is due to report its second-quarter financial results next week. Shares in the company ended Thursday up 1.4 percent at $456.56 and were little changed after-hours. (Additional reporting by Melanie Lee in SHANGHAI; Editing by Alex Richardson)

Cyber attack targeted Google password system

Washington, Apr 20(ANI): The mysterious cyber attack against search engine giant Google last year reportedly included an attempt to hack a vital company-wide password system, which controls user access to most of Google’s web services, e-mail and business applications.

The program, code named Gaia, was attacked in a lightning raid, taking less than two days last December, CBS News quoted a source, saying.

However, Gmail users’ passwords do not appear to have been stolen, and the company quickly initiated security changes to its networks, the source added.

Gaia is intended to enable users and employees to sign in with their password just once to operate a range of services.

The new details seem likely to increase the debate about the security and privacy of vast computing systems such as Google’s, which store personal information of millions of individuals and businesses.

When news of the attack initially became public, it led to a row between Google and China, ultimately resulting in a decision by the company to reroute search queries to its Hong Kong site. (ANI)

Google’s web page ranking algorithm can detect critical species in ecosystems

Washington, September 4 (ANI): Google has developed an algorithm for ranking web-pages, which can be used to determine which species are critical for sustaining ecosystems.

The algorithm, known as “PageRank”, can be applied to the study of food webs, the complex networks describing who eats whom in an ecosystem, according to Drs. Stefano Allesina and Mercedes Pascual, researchers based at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California, Santa Barbara and at the University of Michigan.

The researchers have adapted the PageRank algorithm, which efficiently ranks web-pages according to search criteria, for ecological purposes.

In a world of ever greater human-generated change, there is a need to forecast the impact of species extinctions on ecosystems.

This presents challenges, as every species is embedded in a complex network of relationships with others: a single extinction can cascade in further and seemingly unrelated species’ loss.

Furthering the problem, there are too many extinction scenarios to investigate, as even for simple ecosystems the number of possibilities exceeds the number of atoms in the universe.

Using the PageRank method, Allesina and Pascual identify the set of species which are most critical for maintaining ecosystem functioning.

The method identifies the species of maximum importance by determining which extinctions lead to the fastest ecosystem collapse.

PageRank assigns importance to web-pages according to the rule “a page is important if important pages point to it”.

This circular method of ranking, which can be solved through a clever application of college-level algebra, is key to the process of identifying critical species.

Although this approach would seem inappropriate, as food webs are not truly circular, the researchers introduce an ecologically-sound way to make food webs circular by adding an artificial species, representing the recycling of nutrients from all dead organisms back towards the plants that form the base of food webs.

The researchers hope that this method will be applied far beyond ecology to solve critical problems in other network-related biological fields, such as in protein interaction and gene regulation. (ANI)

Pak netizens post more data to Google Map Maker than other 160 country counterparts

Silicon Valley (California), May 23 (ANI): Pakistan netizens are posting more localized information and data to the Google’s ‘map maker’ than the web users of any of the 160 countries which are using the leading internet search engine’s experiment.

Lalit Katragadda, the founder of Map Maker software informed that a particular Pakistani based in London has posted most frequent edits to the Google’s Map Maker, which is a user-operated software.

Katragadda, who is based in Bangalore, told The Nation via teleconference that the software updates information instantly after a user sitting anywhere in the world within 160 countries posts an edit to the live Map Maker.

When questions were put forth regarding the authenticity of the data provided by any of the net users, Katragadda said it can always be verified by the software.

“We can always verify from authentic as well as independent sources within an hour’s time,” he added.

Any such experiment related to a country’s geographical territory can always be a sensitive issue, and could have some implications, but the Google’s Map Maker had not come across any political issues till now.

“We have not faced any political issues so far,” Katragadda said. (ANI)

Failed Google gridlocks worldwide web traffic

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Internet users worldwide were left stranded when Google experienced technical problems overnight.

The technical glitch brought down Google’s homepage and virtually halted services such as its search site, email, YouTube and Google News performing sluggishly or unavailable to some users.

The slowdown peaked around mid-afternoon in Europe and morning in the US, affecting millions of users, reports news.com.au.

Micro-blogging service Twitter lit up throughout the morning with comments and complaints about the outage at the company that controls more than 60 percent of the US online search market alone.

The Mountain View, California-based search giant did not provide any more details about the partial outage, but on their “offical” blog, Google staff used the analogy of “planes piling up over Asia” to explain the meltdown.

The company was being notoriously coy about how many users were affected and for how long the service was affected.

It claimed “about 14 per cent of our users experienced slow services”, but a graph of worldwide internet use posted by Wired magazine pointed to a much different story.

The graph shows traffic through the top 10 ISPs in the US and shows traffic slid to a virtual halt for two hours. (ANI)

Google in talks to acquire Twitter

California (US), Apr. 3 (ANI): Google is in “late stage” negotiations to acquire Twitter for more than 250 million dollars, according to a report.

According to TechCrunch.com, two sources close to the negotiations confirmed the acquisition talks and said the two companies are considering working together on a “real time search engine.”

The talks come after previous reports that the popular micro-blogging site refused a 500 million dollar buyout offer from Facebook and raised an additional 35 million dollars in venture capital.

Experts say Twitter poses a threat to Google’s dominance in traditional web search and is appealing due to the potential for a real-time search, where a user could get a sense of what is being said about a particular topic instantly.

Google’s main headquarters, the Googleplex, is located in Mountain View, Calif. – about 35 miles south of San Francisco.

Twitter co-founders’ Evan Williams and Biz Stone have already established a business relationship with Google, selling the free publishing tool, “Blogger” to the search king.

With just 29 employees, Twitter has seen its Web traffic grow 900 percent over the past year as politicians, business leaders and celebrities have made headlines with their tweets, and Web users from around the world have flocked to the service. (ANI)

Concessions made by Google, Yahoo on ad deal

Concessions made by Google, Yahoo on ad dealIn order to mollify antitrust regulators who are threatening to block the alliance, a list of concessions has reportedly been submitted by Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. This list will deflate their proposed Internet advertising partnership.

During the weekend, the U.S. Justice Department received the revisions from the two companies.

On Monday, a very well known journal posted on its Web Site, “Google and Yahoo are now willing to limit the amount of revenue generated from the partnership and shorten the deal’s duration. Google’s advertising customers would also be given the option to not have their commercials appear on Yahoo’s Web site.”

Yahoo, under this new plan, would be limited to getting no more than 25% of its search advertising revenue from Google. Further, after two years, their partnership would expire. This is quite opposite to the original contract that was signed in June. It was supposed to get expire after 10 years and there was no restriction on Yahoo on how frequently it could draw upon Google’s technology for displaying ads alongside its search results.

Earlier, Yahoo was hopeful that Google’s system will let it increase its revenue by $800 million annually. However, now the new contract would cut that amount to half due to the imposed restrictions.

“Putting a 25 percent limit on its revenue from Google’s system would mean limit Yahoo’s take to about $400 million annually, based on Yahoo’s search advertising sales during the past four quarters,” added the report posted on the Web Site.

Representatives from Google and Yahoo though declined to comment anything on the Journal’s report, did admit of being in talks with the Justice Department in hopes of winning clearance to join forces.

Yahoo, Google revising advertising deal

Yahoo, Google revising advertising dealSan Francisco – Yahoo and Google are substantially narrowing their proposed advertising agreement to meet the antitrust concerns of the US Justice Department, according to reports Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

The new proposal shortens the term of the deal from 10 years to two years, and places a limit on the revenue that Yahoo can generate from Google to 25 per cent of Yahoo’s search revenue, the reports said.

Under the deal, Google would place ads next to some Web search results on Yahoo and split the revenue with the ailing web giant.

Since Google’s ads are more effective than Yahoo’s at reaching interested consumers, they command higher prices and would significantly boost Yahoo’s revenues.

Yahoo had estimated that the original deal would boost its operating cash flow by 250 million dollars, to 450 million dollars. The new terms could significantly cut that figure.

The two companies control more than 80 per cent of online advertising. A coalition of advertisers and competitors oppose the tie-up, saying it will reduce competition and lead to higher prices. (dpa)
