Nine months after having launched the Chrome web browser, Google just now announced the Google Chrome Operating System, “an attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.”

Google plans to offer the OS for use on a wide array of devices in about a years time.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.”

As people use more and more web applications, the operating system becomes less important and it makes no sense to pay for it. The desktop mail client could be replaced by Gmail, the calendaring application could be replaced by Google Calendar, the office suite has lightweight alternatives: Google Docs and Zoho, it makes more sense to use an online feed reader like Google Reader, your scientific calculator is less powerful than Wolfram Alpha and you’ll rarely need a video player when you have YouTube, Hulu and other video sites.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds.

Google OS Version Base And Hardware Support

Following the release of the Google Chrome web browser nine months ago, Google has announced its latest project: an open source Google Chrome operating system. The Google Chrome OS will be designed for people who spent the majority of their time on the web, focusing on speed, simplicity and security along with an unintrusive GUI (Graphical User Interface). The Chrome OS will be based on a Linux kernel with a new windowing system and aims to have users on the Internet within seconds whilst maintaining security against online threats such as malware. Google Chrome OS will operate on x86 and ARM based CPUs. Google is currently working with numerous OEMs to have Chrome OS based netbooks available for consumers in the second half of next year. The code of Chrome OS will become open source later this year.
