Yoko Ono mourns Oasis split

London, June 4 (ANI): Yoko Ono is quite upset about the Oasis spilt – because she feels goodness shines from the band”s music.

John Lennon”s widow is an avowed Oasis fan and still finds it difficult to believe Noel Gallagher walked out on his brother Liam and bandmates prompting the group”s break-up.

Liam still wants to make music with his Oasis pals, but chief songwriter Noel won”t be part of the band.

And Ono is mourning the band”s split.

“I love Oasis. We need the power of goodness like them. The goodness is shining from their music,” the Daily Express quoted her, as saying. (ANI)

Pope refuses to be intimidated by sex abuse claims

London, March 29 (ANI): Pope Benedict XVI has said that the Catholic Church would “not be intimidated” by the sexual abuse scandal surrounding it.

The 82-year-old Pontiff spoke to tens of thousands of pilgrims at St Peter”s Square in a Palm Sunday service at the start of Holy Week.

“From God comes the courage not to be intimidated by petty gossip,” The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

In his address, the Pope added. “Christ guides us towards goodness and does not let us be disarmed by ingratitude” and mentioned how man can sometimes “fall to the lowest, vulgar levels”.

The Pope recently apologised following a string of shocking revelations claiming senior bishops in Ireland had been involved in covering up the crimes relating to the mistreatment of children.

But his historic apology failed to comfort the victims of sex abuse by Catholic priests in Ireland, who said the letter only referred to Ireland and not other regions and did not admit that the abuse was systematically covered-up. (ANI)

‘Peak debt’ approaching as house prices outstrip incomes

The growth in household debt and house prices in Australia is unsustainable and the nation must at some stage hit “peak debt’, according to a senior partner in one of the world’s biggest management consultancies.

“In the past ten years our household debt has grown much faster and to a much higher level than it is in places like the the UK and the US where we tend to look at them and say, ‘my goodness, look at that incredibly high level of household debt’,” Michael Rennie, managing partner of McKinsey and Co for Australia and New Zealand, told ABC Radio’s PM program.

“You have to ask yourself, ‘when does it become a problem?’”

Asked about predictions that house prices would double this decade, he said:

“They’re saying they are going to double in the next ten years because of supply and demand: that there’s a lack of supply, and demand is going to increase because of the increase in population in the cities, etcetera.

“But you have to ask yourself, if you look at the research that’s been done over the past couple of years by APRA and others on the percentage of households paying more than 30 per cent [of gross household income on mortgage repayments] which is the comfort level for their mortgages, and incomes aren’t going to double, you’ve got to say somewhere along the line that is all not going to add up.

“We hit peak debt at some point. We hit a level that is well above people’s sustainability.”

A global study by McKinsey and Co is also predicting that the world faces at least five more years of constrained growth as economies “deleverage”, or unwind excessive levels of debt.

Although China will partially insulate Australia, we will not be immune, and it will hit exports.

“About 21 per cent of our goods exports and about 27 per cent of our services exports in the past five years have gone to countries that are going to go through this deleveraging in the next five years,” Michael Rennie says.

His comments come as new estimates from the ABS show a surge in Australia’s population.

More than 450,000 people were added to the population, which grew by 2.1 per cent last year to almost 23 million.

Economists say the rapid population growth will underpin growth in GDP and bolster house prices.

But Michael Rennie argues that, even with the population growth, it is impossible for house prices to keep outstripping incomes.

The growth in population will also add to overall demand and could encourage the RBA to lift interest rates.

“We can imagine this scenario where there is tightening monetary policy ….meaning that people are going to pay more for their mortgages; interest rates are going to go up,” he explained.

“At the same time, you have a supply and demand issue with housing which means the price of houses is going to go up.

“A the same time, incomes are not going to go up at the same level and, at some time, all those three are going to come together and it is not going to be sustainable.”

Roman Catholic church issues “sex” prayer for faithful couples!

London, Sept 2 (ANI): Excuse the pillow talk – and move straight to your bed’s side and recite a specially composed prayer before having sex – a prominent Church group has advised Roman Catholic couples.

And the prayer, which appears in the Prayer Book for Spouses, is being encouraged to remind couples that intercourse is a selfless act, not driven by hedonism.

The prayer implores God “to place within us love that truly gives, tenderness that truly unites, self-offering that tells the truth and does not deceive, forgiveness that truly receives, loving physical union that welcomes”, reports The Daily Mail.

The 64-page book, published by the London-based Catholic Truth Society, adds: “Open our hearts to you, to each other and to the goodness of your will.

“Cover our poverty in the richness of your mercy and forgiveness. Clothe us in true dignity and take to yourself our shared aspirations, for your glory, for ever and ever.”

According to the Rt Rev Paul Hendricks, who is the Auxiliary Bishop of Southwark, the prayer’s inclusion was ‘brave but good’.

“I suppose it is a bit idealistic but it is recognising that God is at the heart of the marriage relationship between husband and wife,” he said.

“It is important for the Church to affirm the value of marriage and family life and I suppose this is a particular way of doing that.

“Perhaps it is something that has not been tried, certainly for a while – I can’t remember seeing something like that before,” he added.

The book contains prayers for every stage of marriage and family life. (ANI)

Meet the dog who thinks he’s a cat!

London, August 25 (ANI): In a bizarre case of identity crisis, a dog who shared his home with 40 cats, and has a feline for his best friend, has been offered for adoption.

Chippy was tagged as an “honorary” feline by the Cats Protection League, after he failed to learn how to be a dog.

The charity in Stroud, Gloucestershire, revealed that the Jack Russell, estimated to be between 13 and 15 years old, even used the litter tray and rarely barked after spending his life around cats.

“He came to us as part of a rescue from a multi-cat household in Cirencester,” the Telegraph quoted Liz Dart, who is fostering Chippy in Nailsworth, as saying.

“We couldn’t leave Chippy behind because he had lived with cats all his life. I suppose, having always lived among them he just doesn’t know any different. He never learned how to be a dog.

“He goes to bed with Annie, one of the other cats, as they are very close and ideally we would home them together. She’s very protective of him.

“He didn’t really bark and still uses a litter tray now. He has chewed up a toy mouse – whether he was responding to cat nip on it, I don’t know. He eats dog food now – goodness knows what he ate before,” Liz added.

Referring to Chippy, the Stroud Cats Protection League website, read: “During the last 19 years I have lost count of the number of cats that I have shared my home with. I use a litter tray but have never got the hang of purring! When my owner and 40 felines were evicted the nice people at CP just couldn’t leave me behind.” (ANI)

ICC failed to deal with Muralitharan’s chucking: Richardson

Christchurch, Aug 24 (ANI): Former New Zealand opener Mark Richardson has accused the Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of breaching the 15 degree flexion rule.

Richardson said Muralitharan often bends his arm beyond the 15-degree norm even though he felt it was not the spinner but the indifferent International Cricket Council (ICC), which was at fault.

“There is no easy way to put this, no soft way to broach it, so here goes – Muttiah Muralitharan is throwing the ball,” Richardson wrote in Herald on Sunday.

“I know he’s been tested, re-tested, tested again and cleared. And I know, with the special makeup of his limbs to the naked eye, his action looks worse than it is. But, for goodness sake, half of cricket is now not watched with the naked eye, thanks to the invention of super-slow-motion cameras, hot-spots, snicko and hawk-eyes.

“Many of the slow-motion replays I’ve seen of Murali have only strengthened my conviction he is exceeding the 15 degrees bending and straightening allowance. Is it not meant to be the other way round? Isn’t the hi-tech equipment meant to alleviate my fears?” he asked.

Unlike former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe, who often flays Muralitharan, Richardson didn’t blame the offie, but opined ICC had failed to deal with the issue.

“I don’t blame Murali for this situation. Murali can only do what he does – and what he does he does as a champion, and unlike the other great spinner of my time, Murali does it with good grace and gentlemanly conduct,” Richardson said.

“The problem lies with the inappropriate way in which the ICC has decided to police throwing. A player is suspected of throwing and then, for want of a better term, tested in a laboratory. We’ve all seen the pictures of Murali lit up with bulbs. To his credit he volunteered for this. Apparently he proved he wasn’t a chucker.
“But did he really? What he proved is that he can bowl within limitation, not that in the heat of battle he actually does,” The Dawn quoted him, as saying.

He said that the way the ICC has gone about dealing with this situation, too many bowlers now appear to have suspect actions and can operate for too long before there is any reaction. (ANI)

Positive emotions build resilience, boost life satisfaction

Washington, July 11 (ANI): People who make sure that their lives are filled with frequent moments of positive emotions, tend to have increased resilience against challenges, according to a new study by researchers at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson and her colleagues have suggested that people should build on a daily diet of positive emotions to ensure increased levels of life satisfaction.

“This study shows that if happiness is something you want out of life, then focusing daily on the small moments and cultivating positive emotions is the way to go,” she said.

She added: “Those small moments let positive emotions blossom, and that helps us become more open. That openness then helps us build resources that can help us rebound better from adversity and stress, ward off depression and continue to grow.”

The month long study involved 86 participants, who were asked to submit daily “emotion reports”, rather than answering general questions like, “Over the last few months, how much joy did you feel?”

“Getting those daily reports helped us gather more accurate recollections of feelings and allowed us to capture emotional ups and downs,” said Fredrickson.

She said that building up a daily diet of positive emotions does not require banishing negative emotions, and the study helps to show that to be happy, people do not need to adopt a “Pollyanna-ish” approach and deny the upsetting aspects of life.

“The levels of positive emotions that produced good benefits weren’t extreme. Participants with average and stable levels of positive emotions still showed growth in resilience even when their days included negative emotions,” said Fredrickson.

She suggested that one should focus on the “micro-moments” that can help unlock one positive emotion here or there.

“A lot of times we get so wrapped up in thinking about the future and the past that we are blind to the goodness we are steeped in already, whether it’s the beauty outside the window or the kind things that people are doing for you,” she said.

She added: “The better approach is to be open and flexible, to be appreciative of whatever good you do find in your daily circumstances, rather than focusing on bigger questions, such as ‘Will I be happy if I move to California?’ or ‘Will I be happy if I get married?’”

The study, titled ‘Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life Satisfaction by Building Resilience’, has been published in the journal Emotion. (ANI)

MI6 chief’s beach pics on Facebook ‘no state secret’, says UK Foreign Secretary

London, July 6 (ANI): Reacting on the headlines grabbed by new MI6 head Sir John Sawers’ photographs, which appeared on Facebook, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said that it is “not a state secret” that the spy chief wears Speedos.

John’s wife Shelley Sawers had posted beach photos of her husband on facebook site the day after he was appointment head of MI6.

Information on her profile revealed the couple’s friendships with actors Moir Leslie and Alister Cameron.

According to The Mail, Shelley had disclosed details on Facebook, including the location of the London flat used by the couple and the whereabouts of their three children and of Sir John’s parents.

Senior politicians said that the security lapse raised concerns about John’s ability to take up his post as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service this November, giving him responsibility for Britain’s overseas spying operations.

However, while talking on BBC1′s Andrew Marr Show, Miliband dismissed allegations of recklessness and asked people to “grow up”.

He said that John was an “outstanding professional”, and denied that the details on the social networking website, which have since been removed, would compromise his career.

“What are you leading the news with that… The fact that there’s a picture that the head of the MI6 goes swimming. Wow that really is exciting,” the Telegraph quoted Miliband as saying.

“It is not a state secret that he wears Speedo swimming trunks, for goodness sake let’s grow up.

“This allegation that there’s great secrets and then you find out it’s about his swimming trunks and the fact that his family’s getting dragged into it.

“He was appointed 10 days ago to be the head of MI6; he’s an outstanding professional who will do a really good job in an outstanding organisation that does a huge amount for this country.

“The newspapers have gone on to Facebook and got pictures of him in his swimming trunks – the fact that you’re leading on it when we’ve got Iran, Afghanistan and the other issues,’ he added.

Sir John Major, the former Conservative Prime Minister, said that the issue had been “overblown”. (ANI)

Why saints turn into sinners, and vice versa

Washington, June 27 (ANI): Always wondered how people who are most looked up to and respected end up doing the most heinous of acts? Well, now a new Northwestern University study offers provocative insights in to how saints turn into sinners.

The study has indicated that people with ample moral self-worth in one aspect of their lives can slip into immorality or opposite behaviour in other areas-their abundant self-esteem somehow pushes them to balance out all that goodness.

On the other hand, the study by Douglas Medin, a professor of Psychology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern, showed that people who engage in immoral behaviour cleanse themselves with good work.

The study’s model shows that the cleansing also has to do with restoring an ideal level of moral self-worth.

This means that when people operate above or below a certain level of moral self-worth, they instinctively push back in the opposite direction to reach an internally regulated set point of goodness.

“If people feel too moral. they might not have sufficient incentive to engage in moral action because of the costliness of being good,” said a co-author of the study.

Past studies have shown that people are motivated both by the warm glow that results from good behaviour and recognition of costly, long-term consequences of immoral behaviour on kin and society at large.

But the Northwestern study has for the first time shown that perhaps people whose glow is much warmer than average are more likely to regulate behaviour by acting in an opposite manner or passing up opportunities to behave morally.

“Imagine a line on a plane. If you go above the line, you feel pressure to come back down. The only way you can come back down is either by refraining from good social behavior or by actively engaging in immoral behaviour,” Sachdeva said.

“If you do extra good deeds, you’re motivated to come back down on that internal barometer,” Iliev added.

The researchers drew their results on the basis of three experiments, which included 46 participants

They stressed on cross-cultural differences in their model, suspecting, for example, if they ran tests in India, where people’s actions are more interdependent, the results would be different.

The study, titled ‘Sinning Saints and Saintly Sinners: The Paradox of Moral Self-Regulation’, has been published in the journal Psychological Science. (ANI)

Gorakhpur Muslim sings Hindu prayers

Gorakhpur, May 10 (ANI): A Muslim in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur area has acquired big popularity for his inclination to sing praises of Lord Rama from Ramayana, the religious text of Hindus, with utter devotion.

Drawn to study Hindu religious texts since high-school days, 38-year-old Sadiq Ali is presently a charm for people to listen hymns and religious prayers from in public gatherings.

A firm believer in the oneness of God, Sadiq wants to promote humanity and affection among people of all sections, irrespective of religious faiths.

“When I was in High School, my Hindu friends used to take me to the readings of Ramayana and the Mahabharata. I developed an interest in Ramayana Kirtan (singing verses from the Ramayana). Now I am proficient in singing ‘Kirtans’,” he said.

Though initially Sadiq had to bear with the resentment of a few persons of his community, but it only strengthened his faith in bringing Hindus and Muslims close to each other.

He says if all religious have common teachings asking followers to develop goodness in life and live together, why should we allow ourselves to fight each other in the name of religion at all.

“There are problems sometimes. Religious leaders often try to dissuade me but I make them understand. I believe that all religions are equal, and I give equal respect to all religions,” Sadiq said.

“At some places people say that they do not want low caste Hindus and Muslims to sing Kirtans. But we try to make them understand that it is rather commendable that being a Muslim he is singing Ramayana kirtan,” said Radheshyam, a member of Sadiq Ali’s troupe.

Ali is, in his own way, setting an example of communal harmony and endorsing the oneness of God. By Pawan Shah (ANI)

Tibetan scholar, Tenzin said that he hoped the conference would spread the message of goodness across the world.

“The conference will spread the message of goodness across the world. This will further strengthen the relations between Tibet and India,” said Tenzin.

Sri Lankan Aussie coach ‘shaken’ but not scared by terror attack, says wife

Lahore, Mar.3 (ANI): The terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team on Tuesday in which six Lankan players were injured, also had the Australian coach of the team, Trevor Bayliss in the firing line.

Bayliss escaped unhurt in the incident, but not before two of the gun shots hit the windowpane next to him.

After the attack, Bayliss called his wife, Julie, in Sydney to confirm that he was alright.

Julie said that Bayliss was fine, and would be returning back home soon.

He is fine but he did have three bullet holes in the window next to him so it was not his time … thank goodness!,” The News.com quoted Julie, as saying.

She said Bayliss sounded terrified, but didn’t sustain any hits.

“He was pretty shaken. There were only seven or eight of them that got away with no wounds at all. There was a fair bit of shrapnel around but he is fine,” she said.

ccording to sources at least six Lankan players, namely captain Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana were wounded in the attack.

The Lankan team convoy was attacked on Tuesday morning when it was on its way to the Gaddafi Stadium where the second Test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is being played.

Five security personnel were also reportedly killed in the firing and grenade attack. (ANI)

Octuplets’ granny makes peace with daughter

Washington, February 17 (ANI): The octuplets’ grandmother has put aside differences with her daughter, who made history after giving birth to six boys and two girls, adding to her previous brood of 6.

Angela Suleman revealed that she was compelled to break the ice with her daughter, Nadya, who conceived all 14 of her babies through in vitro fertilization, after laying her eyes on the eight newborns.

“I was actually very upset that my daughter had gone and done this in-vitro,” CBS quoted Angela as telling Early Show.

“But, after I saw them, you know, I thought, ‘My goodness, these are my grandchildren. They’re so tiny and fragile. I’ll have to be there for them, you know, like I was for the others,”‘ she added.

She further said that her anger was fast disappearing, adding: “I did (resent Nadya), but you know, you can resent your daughter for just so long, and then you see that she’s trying so hard to take care of these children, and she’s a good mother.

” …She’s a very good mother but then she had a good example!

“There must be a reason, you know, why this happened, and that they’re all healthy. That is a miracle, a total miracle.”

Nadya had given birth to the octuplets in late January in a span of five minutes at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

It is believed to be only the second time in history that live octuplets have survived for more than a couple of hours. (ANI)

Prayers for Shahrukh Khan’s speedy recovery

Bhopal/Mumbai, Feb 17 (ANI): Prayers were performed at a hair-cutting saloon in Bhopal to wish a speedy recovery of Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, who underwent a successful shoulder surgery on Monday.

Naresh Sen, a barber in the saloon said that Khan had inspired their community to become successful through his film ‘Billu’.

“The havan (ritual) which I performed was for Shahrukh Khan to live a longer life. He will live much longer. I performed this ritual in my saloon because he has given us inspiration through his film ‘Billu and an opportunity for the poor class to move forward.” said Naresh.

The 43-year-old actor underwent an arthroscopic surgery on left shoulder, which kept nagging him for quite sometime.

Doctors at the Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital said Khan was recovering well.

The operation lasted for around one-and-a-half hours by a team of three doctors, a hospital official said.

Before he left for the hospital Khan said that getting injured was part of his job.

“I think when you working in a profession like this you ought to fall and jump. It is obvious you can get wounded like this. So I always believe this is a payment for all the goodness that I get,” said Khan. (ANI)

Boss’ life-saving Oz couple laid off, thanks to recession

Melbourne, February 2 (ANI): Goodness may go unrewarded, and recession is to blame. Such was the case with an Australian couple who were given the pink slip only weeks after saving the life of one of their bosses.

Sharon and David Hegyi, who have worked on Tipperary Station for seven years, were shocked to learn that they were being fired due to “down-sizing”, especially when the mum-of-five had saved Station finance manager David Breed after he suffered a heart attack.

Sharon, a registered nurse, had rushed to help her suffering chief, giving him medication, hooking him up to oxygen and calling an ambulance.

“But he deteriorated rapidly and I thought he was going to die. So we put him in a car and David drove towards Adelaide River. The ambulance met us half way. I honestly believe that I saved his life,” News.com.au quoted her as telling the Northern Territory News.

And now, the couple is devastated after being told to move out of their company house.

Sharon said: “I could understand it if we’d done something wrong. But we didn’t.

David added: “We’re shattered. We’ve got no jobs, no house and five kids. I know we’ll be able to get work easy enough but we just want our old jobs back.” (ANI)

Now, blue car-shaped UFO hoons over Australia

Melbourne, Jan 18 (ANI): In yet another incident of UFO sightings, a mysterious blue car-shaped UFO has been spotted flying across the sky over northern Australia.

Amateur photographer Mark Schmutter, who claims to have taken the snaps of the mystifying object, says that it looked like a car.

“It does look like a car but what would a car be doing up in the sky?” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Schmutter said he was standing on the ninth-floor balcony of a friend’s CBD apartment in Darwin, when he saw the object move across the sky about the speed of a plane.

Then it flew straight upwards before it disappeared into the sky.

“I decided to go out on the balcony and take some shots of Darwin,” he said.

“I just held the camera up and I saw this thing flash through the sky and I thought ‘Oh my goodness what was that?’, and then it came back again so I hit it with the camera.

“But it wasn’t an airplane, no noise … it was a fair way away, you know, but I didn’t hear any noise,” he added.

Schmutter, of Lyons, said he had no idea what it was – be it a strange, newfangled aircraft or a UFO shaped like a muscle car.

The Top End Flying Club last year suggested many of the local sightings of UFOs could actually be Sigma-4 ultralight aircraft – informally dubbed the flying sperm – which fly slowly and with little noise. (ANI)
