US Fritzl held sickening orgies in his secret evil garden

London, Aug 30 (ANI): ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido held sickening orgies in the same filthy compound where he kept Jaycee Lee Dugard as his sex slave for 18 years and fathered two children with her, it has been revealed.

Mike Rogers, whose home backs on to the convicted rapist’s backyard, said: “At the time I didn’t know what was in his garden. I really tried to keep out of his business.

“But when one of his parties was excessively loud I peered through the fence and yelled for them to keep the noise down.

“What I saw was not normal. Eight to ten men, mostly Mexican, would gather in a line in his garden drinking beer, yelling and screaming and swearing.

“They normally had a bonfire and I saw them entering the tent one by one. On a number of occasions I saw them bobbing up and down through the window and I thought, ‘My God, there is something sexual going on in there.

“I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something,” he added.

The orgies were a frequent event, reports News of the World.

“They were different men each time. I just hope that sicko wasn’t pimping out Jaycee or those children. The thought makes me sick,” Rogers said.

Rogers, who lived next to Garrido for four years, said that while he was disturbed by what was happening he did not feel he had enough evidence to alert police. (ANI)

Gene linked with language, speech, reading disorders identified

Washington, August 28 (ANI): An international group of American and Spanish researchers have identified a new candidate gene for Specific Language Impairment.

Mabel Rice at the University of Kansas, Shelley Smith of University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Javier Gayan of Seville-based Neocodex in Spain have shed light on the KIAA0319 in the current issue of the Journal of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

The researchers have revealed that the gene found on Chromosome 6 was associated with variability in language abilities in a study of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and their family members.

They say that the gene was also found to be linked with variability in speech and reading abilities.

According to the researchers, the children they selected for the study had no hearing loss, general intellectual deficit or autism

Language ability involves vocabulary and grammar, whereas speech involves the accuracy of sound production. Both language and speech ability contribute to a child’s ability to read.

The researchers say that the finding that a candidate gene could influence all three abilities suggests a common pathway that could contribute to overlapping strengths or deficiencies across speech, language and reading.

Rice said: “We don’t understand the biological mechanisms yet but it’s important that we have identified the first gene that could be involved across these three different dimensions of development.”

The study involved 322 individuals, including children with SLI, their parents, siblings, and other family members.

“We have come to realize that language really sets the platform for reading to emerge and to thrive. Without a solid language system, it’s much harder to get reading going,” said Rice. (ANI)

‘I really think Ali feared me’, says ‘Smoking’ Joe Frazier

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Frazier, who is famous for his trilogy of Heavyweight Championship fights with Muhammad Ali, has said that he still retains a disdain for the treatment he received from Ali.

Frazier, who for a decade had impaired vision in his left eye, could not see after Ali punched his right eye closed.

The history between the pair, which is featured in a DVD released this week, demonstrates the depth of the feud, highlighted by Ali’s verbal assaults on race and religious grounds.

“Ali was nervous and he taunted me, saying I was ugly and all sorts of things. But, I think that was his way of building himself up, by running off at the mouth,” The Herald Sun quotes Frazier, as saying.

“He had a lot of respect for me. And, I think he feared I could beat him. So, he used his tongue before the fights to try to upset me and to get his own adrenaline going. I really think he feared me,” he added.

Despite protests, Frazier’s corner threw in the towel before the 15th round, which meant that Frazier had lost the rematch. Frazier was never again the force he used to be and accepts his place in history, aware that a few seconds between rounds 14 and 15 in Manila could have changed the world’s perception of his talents.

“You have corners and trainers and managers who care. I had impaired vision in my left eye and I was struggling to see out of the other. I didn’t hold anything against anybody for the fight being stopped,” Frazier said.

“I would have been in real trouble if both my eyes closed. But, to learn Ali was ready to quit at the same time my corner called an end to the fight was a bit disappointing. He ended up in more physical strife than me, but he got the verdict and all the accolades that go with winners,” he added.

The 65-year-old further said that all that happened in “The Thrilla in Manilla” fight is history now and everyone must move on.

“I am at peace with the world. I could never understand why he went on at the mouth about so many things. I’ve always believed it doesn’t matter what colour your skin is. I couldn’t figure out what he was on about. I can only hope he asks the Lord for forgiveness for the wrongs he did me,” Frazier said. (ANI)

Brain scans can tell ‘honest’ person from ‘dishonest’ one even when both tell the truth

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Researching into the cognitive process involved with honesty, Harvard University psychologists have come to the conclusion that truthfulness depends more on absence of temptation than active resistance to temptation.

Assistant Professor Joshua Greene and graduate student Joe Paxton, the duo that led the study, have revealed that they used neuroimaging to look at the brain activity of people given the chance to gain money dishonestly by lying, and found that honest people showed no additional neural activity when telling the truth.

The researchers say that that observation implied that extra cognitive processes were not necessary to choose honesty.

However, the researchers also found that individuals who behaved dishonestly, even when telling the truth, showed additional activity in brain regions that involve control and attention.

“Being honest is not so much a matter of exercising willpower as it is being disposed to behave honestly in a more effortless kind of way. This may not be true for all situations, but it seems to be true for at least this situation,” says Greene.

The researchers say that they carried out the study to test two theories about the nature of honesty – the “Will” theory, in which honesty results from the active resistance of temptation, and the “Grace” theory in which honesty is a product of lack of temptation.

Writing about their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they have suggested that the “Grace” theory is true, because the honest participants did not show any additional neural activity when telling the truth.

To prompt participants to lie, the researchers created a cover story about the focus of their study. The research was presented as a study of paranormal ability to predict the future.

The researchers asked those participating in the study to predict the outcomes of a series of coin tosses.

The subjects were told that the research team believed predicting the future was more likely when given a monetary incentive, and when the prediction was not shared in advance of the outcome. That gave the participants the opportunity to lie and say that they had correctly predicted the coin toss to win the money.

The subjects’ honesty was assessed based on whether their number of correct responses was statistically feasible.

According to the researchers, the participants who reported improbably high levels of accuracy were classified as dishonest, and those reporting statistically feasible levels of accuracy were classified as honest.

With the aid of fMRI technique, Greene found that the honest individuals displayed little to no additional brain activity when reporting their prediction of the coin toss. However, the dishonest participants’ brains were most active in control-related brain regions when they chose not to lie.

Greene notes that there was an important distinction between the brain activity when the honest participants told the truth, and when the dishonest participants told the truth.

“When the honest people leave money on the table, you don’t see anything special or extra going on in their brains at all. Whereas, when the dishonest people leave money on the table, that’s when you saw the most robust control network activation,” says the researcher.

The researchers hope that their findings may pave the way for a technique to detect lies by looking at someone’s brain activity, but they also concede that a lot more work must be done before this becomes possible. (ANI)

MJ seduced gay lovers saying King of Pop wants your lollipop, claims book

London, July 13 (ANI): A new book makes several shocking claims about Michael Jackson, including one that he had many gay lovers who he seduced by saying: “The King of Pop is going to lick your lollipop.”

Biographer Ian Halperin claims to have hunted down two of the star’s alleged male lovers, with one apparently making the allegation.

“The very first time he had sex with me he said, ‘The King of Pop’s going to lick your lollipop’. I still laugh thinking about that,” the Sun quoted Jackson’s one alleged lover as having told Halperin.

The author of ‘Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson’ also alleges that “virtually everybody” around the singer knew about his interests in the same sex.

He says: “Virtually everybody has told me. Even those who are his most ardent defenders, people who maintain he is innocent of the molestation charges, insist that he is homosexually inclined.” (ANI)

Taliban losing fight in Afghanistan, says Britain’s top general

London, July 11 (ANI): British Chief of Defence Staff Sir Jock Stirrup has insisted that the Taliban is losing the fight in Afghanistan.

The top British general was defending the bloodiest 24-hour period for ground troops since operations began.

He sent his condolences to the bereaved families, but said it was important to “remember why our people are fighting in Afghanistan and what they are achieving through their sacrifice.”

“It’s tough going because the Taliban have rightly identified Helmand as their vital ground. If they lose there then they lose everywhere – and so they are throwing everything they have into it,” the Daily Star quoted Sir Jock Stirrup, as saying.

“But they are losing and our commanders on the ground are very clear of that. But it’s going to take time and alas it does involve casualties, but when it’s complete there will be the opportunity for considerably greater governance for the people of Helmand,” he added.

Eight troops died in a 24-hour period, bringing the total who have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 184, surpassing the death toll in Iraq. Fifteen soldiers have been killed in the last 10 days.

On Friday, five British troops from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles died in two separate blasts on the same patrol near Sangin, and another British soldier from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment died near Nad-e-Ali. (ANI)

IndiaMART.com registers 40 percent growth in recession time

New Delhi, July 9 (ANI/Business Wire India): IndiaMART.com registered an impressive growth of 40 per cent in revenues for 2008-2009 despite an economic downturn. he growth in revenues has also been backed by a robust 52 per cent growth in supplier registrations.

“Our numbers speak for themselves, While the whole world is busy hiding behind words like recession and economic downturn to conceal their poor performance, our teams have strived hard to keep the winning streak going,” said a beaming Dinesh Agarwal, CEO and Founder of IndiaMART.com.

Agarwal feels the steep rise in registrations is clearly indicative of recessionary pressure on entrepreneurs to make do with show string marketing budgets, which naturally pushes them to seek online marketing as the most credible and effective option. As the market leader, IndiaMART is always keen to take on path breaking initiatives to sensitize SMEs about online marketing and adoption of technology through events, trade shows and conferences.

IndiaMART.com has been ranked India’s No. 1 online B2B marketplace by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in its recent study done on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) usage among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The independent market research, with special focus on online B2B marketplaces, accords over 85 per cent preference for IndiaMART among B2B suppliers who go online, and who were interviewed by IAMAI. The study also states a 60 per cent market share for IndiaMART.com in India.

IndiaMART.com received its first round of private equity investment from Intel Capital earlier this year. Bennet Coleman and Co Ltd, publishers of The Times of India and The Economic Times, also have a stake in IndiaMART as a private treaty partner. (ANI)

Sharif’s petition in choppy waters in “illegal” chopper case

Rawalpindi, June 25 (ANI): Problems for the former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are far from over, as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has now requested the Lahore High Court (LHC) to dismiss Sharif’s petition against punishment in the helicopter case.

The NAB has sighted that Sharif had filed the petition much after the date set by the court.

Senior NAB Prosecutor Abdul Baseer Qureshi told a Division Bench that Sharif, after his conviction, had deliberately avoided approaching court for an appeal within the stipulated time, and preferred going abroad to file his plea.

“It is a clear evidence of Nawaz Sharif’s disinterest in challenging the verdict. Therefore, the court should dismiss his belated plea for the condoning of time limit for filing appeal in the case,” Qureshi said.

Qureshi also denied that the copies of the verdict had reached Sharif late due to which he couldn’t file his petition.

“All the record was supplied to former prime minister’s counsel on April 10,” The Daily Times quoted Qureshi, as saying.

Sharif has been accused of tax evasion and fraudulently purchasing a helicopter, which he used for election campaigning in the mid-1990s.

A special anti-terrorism court had adjudged him guilty of utilizing his post for his own benefit, and disqualified him from holding public office for 21 years. (ANI)

Royal Challengers to take on Deccan Chargers in IPL-2 final

Johannesburg (South Africa), May 24 (ANI): The Anil Kumble-led Royal Challengers, Bangalore (RCB), which has won seven of its last nine matches, will take on the Adam Gilchrist-inspired Deccan Chargers in the final of the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday evening.

The match will be played in the Bull Ring in the New Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The IPL in South Africa has been no less than a Bollywood flick. After all the action, drama and heartbreaks, Lalit Modi’s brainchild will witness a fairy tale ending.

Last years bottom two teams made it to the top two this season, where the Deccan’s story has many heroes, but none can surpass the contribution made by skipper Adam Gilchrist at the top and the purple cap holder R P Singh.

As for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, they gave the much surprised twist in the tale in the second semi-final. A victory against the Chennai Super Kings, which will taste even sweeter than the best of wine, brewed by this none other than team owner Vijay Mallya.

With a nail-bitter all set to take place, all eyes will be on the star players from both sides.

For the Deccan Chargers, their strength lies in the explosive opening pair of Adam Gilchrist and Herchelle Gibbs, followed by a gutsy Andrew Symonds and hugely talented Rohit Sharma.

However, the team lacks the depth plus the inconsistency in the bowling department. The purple cap holder R P Singh has been the lone warrior for the Chargers. The team has the opportunity to keep the winning momentum going and shed the tag of underachievers. But, the threat of having lost badly to their opponents on Thursday is still fresh on the minds of the players.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore, after almost being down and out, scripted one of the most memorable turnarounds under Anil Kumble’s leadership, which is undoubtedly one of their biggest strengths. However, inconsistency has been the team’s prime enemy. But the team has an opportunity to prove the critics wrong by making use of Manish Pandey’s sizzling form and their disciplined bowling attack led by their skipper.

The team will be a bundle of nerves with expectations rising, and once dubbed to be a Test team will go all out to win this prestigious T20 title.

As per the odds, a resurgent team Bangalore looks better after each outing, but they are not the favourites with the punters. After Gilly’s flambouyant willow show against the Delhi Daredevils in the first semi-final, the odds tilt towards the Deccan Chargers at 1.80 and Bangalore will have to be content with 2.20.

The weather, which has been hold and cold in South Africa, is the key factor in today’s grand finale. With a partly cloudy sky predicted and a minimal chance of rainfall, the blankets will be needed in the dug outs, as the minimum temperature moves a little further down at 6 degrees. (ANI)

Rachel Weisz decides to cut down on work in favour of family

London, May 22 (ANI): Hollywood actress Rachel Weisz has decided to cut down on her work in a bid to spend more time with family.

Rachel, who is promoting her forthcoming flick ‘Agora’, is keen to spend time with fiance Darren Aronofsky and their two tear old son Henry.

“I used to work back to back. Now I do two projects a year and take a big break between them. I have to consider where I’m travelling to if Darren’s going to be working at the same time,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

She revealed that Darren and she co-ordinated their work to find family time together.

“I filmed Agora in Malta for four months, and Darren edited there. I started and two weeks later he came out with his editor.

Before that we were both at home in New York. So we’ve managed to keep the family together. And it works,” she said. (ANI)

‘Creativity chemical’ in the brain biased towards smarter people

London, May 21 (ANI): High levels of a so-called “creativity chemical” in a certain part of the brain is what boosts creativity in smart people, revealed a study.

People with average intelligence, on the other hand, are less ingenious because of low levels of the same chemical.

N-acetyl-aspartate, which is found in neurons, is apparently linked with neural health and metabolism.

Already, Rex Jung at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and his colleagues knew that high levels of NAA in the left parieto-occipital lobe, which coordinates sensory and visual information, were linked with intelligence.

In order to know whether NAA also plays a role in creativity, the researchers recruited 56 men and women aged 18 to 39, and measured the NAA levels in various regions of their brains.

The researchers also tested the volunteers’ general intelligence and, more specifically, their capacity for divergent thinking-a factor in creativity that includes coming up with novel ideas, such as new uses for everyday objects.

On the whole, volunteers’ creativity scores were concurrent with levels of NAA in a brain region called the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG), which regulates the activity of the frontal cortex – implicated in higher mental functions.

However, while low levels of NAA in the ACG correlated with high creativity in people of average intelligence, the reverse was found to be true in people with IQs of above 120.

Jung predicted that if there is less NAA to regulate frontal cortex activity in “average” brains, they are freer to roam and find new ideas.

However, in highly intelligent people, tighter control over the frontal cortex could apparently enhance creativity.

This could be because they are more likely to come up with new ideas anyway, and the tighter control allows them to “fine-tune” that ability.

“People say you have to let your mind wonder freely to be creative. For people of average intelligence, perhaps it’s true that you need to utilise more areas of your [frontal cortex] for something truly novel and creative to emerge, but in more intelligent folks, there’s something different going on,” New Scientist magazine quoted Jung as saying.

In his opinion, the findings could shed new light on what made the brains of creative geniuses like Einstein tick. (ANI)

Widespread violence in poll-bound West Bengal, one killed in Mukherjee’s Jangipur constituency

Jangipur (West Bengal), May 7 (ANI): One CPM worker was reportedly killed in the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal on Thursday, from where incumbent External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is contesting this year’s general elections.

According to reports, activists of the CPI-M and the Congress are engaged in clashes across West Bengal’s Murshidabad District. There has been a report of a street explosion as well as sporadic incidents of stone pelting.

Earlier in the day, at least one activist of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reportedly killed and two Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) activists were injured in clashes outside a polling booth in Nandigram.

Television reports said that the incident took place in the Gokulnagar area of Nandigram District in West Bengal despite the presence of a high security detail.

Police confirmed incidents of bomb throwing, ransacking and looting.

Among the 17 constituencies spread over seven districts in West Bengal, Nandigram and Singur, the epicentre of the land stir that turned the tables on the ruling CPM in the 2008 panchayat polls, have been declared the most sensitive.

Singur falls under the Hooghly Lok Sabha seat and Nandigram is part of Tamluk. Both Singur and Nandigram will play a key role in determining the results of these two Lok Sabha seats.

Considering the sensitive nature of the booths in Singur and Nandigram, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to deploy special observers in these two seats. They would move around the polling stations within the jurisdiction of the two assembly segments.

CPM sitting MP Lakshman Seth is seeking re-election from Tamluk. Trinamool Congress has fielded its strongman Subhendu Adhikary against Seth. The Nandigram Assembly segment is likely to give Adhikary a comfortable winning margin.

The administration had deployed 220 companies of central forces and 38,000 armed guards to man polling booths, especially the “sensitive” ones in these 17 constituencies.

The Opposition is banking on the jot (alliance) chemistry to rework the poll arithmetic in areas where it was way behind in the last polls. The Left Front is eyeing the cracks within the Opposition to recover some of its lost ground.

The second phase of polls is likely to throw up surprises in at least five seats where Left Front had an easy going earlier. The CPM is confident about the three seats in Burdwan, while the Opposition is expecting major breakthroughs in East Midnapore, Nadia, Birbhum, Howrah and Hooghly.

Over 2.17 crore voters in the 17 Lok Sabha seats will vote on Thursday. The Lok Sabha seats, that go to polls on Thursday, are Jangipur, Berhampore, Murshidabad, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Howrah, Uluberia, Serampore, Hooghly, Arambagh, Tamluk, Kanthi, Burdwan East, Burdwan-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum.

West Bengal home secretary Ardhendu Sen said on Wednesday that 4195 of the total 20,975 polling stations where elections will be held on Thursday have been identified as sensitive booths. He also said that all booths would be manned by armed forces. Altogether, 38,000 state armed police personnel would be deployed along with central forces. (ANI)

Noel Gallagher says Oasis a rudderless ship facing bad times

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has dubbed the band as a rudderless ship, which is facing bad times while touring South America.

The guitarist, on his blog on the band’s official MySpace page, said conflicts between the band members might brew up a storm.

“We speak at bad times for the Oasis tour,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“Bad times. We are a rudderless ship at the minute. And there’s a f****n’ s**t-storm on the horizon. I guess all will be revealed in due course,” he added.

He continued: “Strange atmosphere. I wouldn’t mind but we’re in South America! Playing massive stadiums and there’s a bit too much hrmph-ing going on for my liking. Shame really.” (ANI)

Hugh Jackman scared of dolls coming to life!

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Dashing his hard-man personality, Hugh Jackman has confessed he’s scared of dolls coming to life on the big screen.

The X-Men star openly admitted he is always scared whenever he watches kids’ toys brought to life on screen – and he traced his fears back to watching horror movie Child’s Play as a youngster, which featured a murderous doll named Chucky, reports Contactmusic.
He says, “When dolls come to life in films, that just freaks me out, I just can’t stand that. Chucky? Forget that.

“I remember when I was a little kid, and that little doll in the rocking chair going, ‘Take the girl right up the hill and kiss the girl goodbye’… I’m like, forget that! That freaks me out.” (ANI)

Trulli leads Toyota double to clinch Bahrain GP pole

Sakhir, Bahrain – Jarno Trulli clinched pole position ahead of team-mate Timo Glock in a first Toyota one-two in qualifying Saturday for Sunday’s Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, the winner in Shanghai last week, was third, ahead of Brawn GP’s Jenson Button, the overall leader.

World champion Lewis Hamilton provided a boost for McLaren-Mercedes with fifth place to start in the third row alongside Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello.

There was also improvement for Ferrari, still without a point this season, who had Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen eighth and 10th respectively.

Renault’s Fernando Alonso was seventh ahead of Massa, with Nico Rosberg in a Williams ninth, ahead of Raikkonen.

With the temperature at 38 degrees Celsius at the Bahrain International Circuit, Trulli clocked 1 minute 33.431 seconds to edge Germany’s Glock by 0.281 seconds for his fourth pole position and his first since the US Grand Prix in 2005.

“This is a great result for the team,” said the 34-year-old Italian, whose only Grand Prix victory came for Renault at Monaco in 2004.

“We have worked very hard for this, and I’m very happy. I feel very comfortable ahead of tomorrow’s race.”

Toyota, who have never won a Grand Prix, filled the first row in qualifying for the first time and earned their first pole since Ralf Schumacher was qualifying fastest at Suzuka, Japan in October 2005.

Glock said he was satisfied despite just being edged to what would have been a first pole.

“I was quite happy during qualifying. But then I made one mistake, although I don’t think it would have been good enough for pole. Jarno was just too good today,” he said.

BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld meanwhile both failed to make the third and final qualifying stage as the team’s disappointing season continued, while Red Bull’s Mark Webber was a casualty in the first qualifying round.

The Australian – second in Shanghai last week – was held up by Germany’s Adrian Sutil in a Force India, and will start 19th in the 20-car field.

Button leads overall going into the fourth race of the season. The Briton, who won the opening two races in Australia and Malaysia and finished third in China, has 21 points, six ahead of team-mate Barrichello of Brazil.

Vettel and Glock both have 10 points, Webber is on 9.5 and Trulli on 8.5.

Brawn GP lead the constructors’ championship on 36 points, with Red Bull on 19.5 and Toyota on 18.5.(dpa)
