UPS Digs Deep into Footprint, Sets High Goals for Fuel Efficiency

United Parcel Service decreased energy and water use as well as its greenhouse gas emissions last year in the U.S., prompting the company to set a new goal of 20 percent improvement in automotive fuel efficiency by 2020.

The environmental efforts are detailed in UPS’s latest sustainability report, which was published Monday.

The higher standard for fuel efficiency is set against a baseline year of 2000 and if achieved would double the company’s performance in the area thus far. From 2000 through 2009, automotive fuel efficiency increased 10 percent, UPS reported, noting that its drivers covered 77.3 million miles more in 2009 than they did in 2000 but consumed 3.2 million gallons less fuel.

The new target for automotive fuel efficiency dovetails an air fleet efficiency goal announced last year: After several years of steadily increasing efficiency in air operations, UPS said it would reduce the carbon emissions by its air fleet by 20 percent by 2020, compared to 2005.

The company’s move to raise the bar for efficiency in its ground and air operations were among the highlights of a sustainability report that noted improvement in the majority of the company’s environmental key performance indicators.

UPS started compiling sustainability reports in 2003 and this year’s report, which covers operations in 2009, is the first to publish information on the company’s global greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2, CH4, N2O and HFC) for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. (see chart, right). Previously, the company reported only on CO2 emissions.

The information also reflects more extensive data collection by UPS, which process mapped all transport-related activities that generate carbon across the company globally in reporting CO2 Scope 3 emissions this year. As noted in the chart below left, direct emissions fell almost 9 percent from 2008 to 2009 while indirect emissions almost tripled.

“As you see, we continue to evolve and we’re working very hard at mapping out our impact,” said Steven Leffin, UPS’s corporate sustainability manager.

Leffin pointed to those efforts, UPS’s heightened transparency in reporting and its new goals for fuel and air fleet efficiency as some of the key accomplishments by the company in the past year.

Although revenue slipped from $51.5 billion in 2008 to $45.3 billion in 2009 as the recession continued, UPS remained the world’s largest package delivery company and handled 3.8 billion packages in 2009. The U.S. domestic package operation, the company’s largest business segment, accounted for 62 percent of the revenue and showed improvement in energy efficiency as well as emissions when compared to parcels handled. When measured against revenue, however, energy consumption and emissions rose in 2009.

Energy consumption was 3.5 percent lower per 1,000 packages and rose 3.6 percent per dollar of revenue. CO2e emissions declined 3.1 percent per 1,000 packages and increased 3.8 percent per dollar of revenue, the company reported.

The sustainability report examined the company’s work to reduce energy consumption, emissions, water use and fuel consumption on the ground and in air.

UPS, which prides itself on deeply detailed measuring and monitoring to boost environmental performance, presented data in terms of absolute change and as an efficiency rate based on what it takes to deliver a package or produce revenue.

Specifically, UPS decreased:

Energy Use

Absolute direct and indirect energy consumption for U.S. package operations and for U.S. supply chain and freight fell. U.S. package operations consumed 96.80 million gigajoules in 2009, about 7 percent less than the 104.1 million gigajoules in 2008. U.S. supply chain and freight consumed 16.55 million gigajoules of energy in 2009, 19.4 percent less than the 20.53 million gigajoules in consumed in 2008 (see chart at right).

Energy efficiency, expressed as energy consumption per 1,000 parcels in U.S. package operations, came to 29.33 million gigajoules in 2009, compared with 30.40 million gigajoules per 1,000 packages in 2008. Meanwhile, energy consumption per $1,000 of revenue was 3.44 gigajoules for 2009 an increase from the 3.32 gigajoules for $1,000 of revenue in 2008.

Emissions for U.S. Package Operations

Absolute direct and indirect CO2e emissions for U.S. package operations also dropped. CO2e emissions came to 7.27 million metric tonnes in 2009, compared with 7.75 million metric tonnes in 2008 (see chart below right).

Carbon efficiency, expressed as CO2e emissions per 1,000 parcels in U.S. package operations, were 2.18 metric tonnes per 1,000 packages in 2009, compared with 2.25 metric tonnes per 1,000 packages for the previous year. Viewing emissions compared to revenue, CO2e emissions came to 25.55 metric tonnes per $100,000 of revenue in 2009, an uptick from the 24.61 metric tonnes CO2e for the same amount of revenue in 2008.

Water Use

Water consumption decreased in absolute terms and in water efficiency rates based on number of packages handled and revenue. The company’s absolute water consumption in 2009 came to 4.52 million cubic meters for U.S. package operations, supply chain and freight, compared with 5.04 million cubic meters in 2008. In 2009, 1.18 cubic meters of water were consumed per 1,000 packages in U.S. package operations, compared with 1.28 cubic meters of waters per 1,000 packages in 2008. In a look at water use compared to revenue, UPS consumed 0.138 cubic meters per $1,000 of revenue in 2009 compared with 0.139 cubic meters per $1,000 in 2008.

Fuel Consumption and Air Fleet Emissions

Gallons of fuel consumed on the ground to deliver a single package decreased. In 2009, it took an average 0.121 gallons of fuel to deliver single package in the U.S. using UPS’ ground network, which includes its fleet of more than 95,000 vehicles and rail services. That’s a nearly 5 percent improvement over the figure for 2008. The company’s green fleet steadily grew in 2009 to 1,883 alternative fuel vehicles.

Carbon emissions of global airline operations based on the amount on CO2 emitted when transporting a ton of capacity one nautical mile, termed an available ton mile or ATM, also dropped. The measure of carbon efficiency was 1.40 pounds of CO2 per available ton mile in 2009, compared to 1.42 pounds of CO2/ATM in 2008. The goal to increase carbon efficiency by 20 percent between 2005 and 2020, builds on previous gains in the area. If achieved, UPS will increase carbon efficiency by 42 percent compared to 1990.

Gallons of jet fuel consumed per 100 available ton miles. UPS used 6.63 gallons of jet fuel per 100ATM in 2009, a drop from the 6.73 gals/100ATM logged in 2008. The company originally set a target of 6.9 gals/100ATM for 2011 target, but surpassed the goal in 2008. It has a new target of 6.57 gals/100ATM for 2012.

The firm’s goals for reducing carbon emissions in its airline operations, which would be the ninth largest in the U.S. if it were an airline company, are among the most aggressive in UPS’s ambitious environmental program.

UPS’s efforts include joining 10 other members of the Air Transportation Association of America to support development of aviation biofuel development by signing a memorandum of understanding with two potential aviation biofuel developers in 2009.

Airline operations account for 53 percent of the company’s global carbon footprint, so focusing on that area is an imperative, Leffin said. Overall, the company’s improvements in environmental performance demonstrate the value of UPS’s integrated transportation network of package cars, trucks, rail and shipping services and aircraft, he said.

The company not only optimizes the way each functions (down to specific drivers and their routes), the firm also employs sophisticated systems to optimize carbon and energy efficiency across a single delivery and delivery operations as a whole.

The process, which UPS calls “decarbonization synergy,” ensures that packages get to their destinations with least environmental impact without compromising delivery schedules and customer service, Leffin said.

The company also is providing services for customers to help lighten the environmental tread of their packages. The company introduce a carbon offset program last October and expanded it to 36 countries this summer. It also introduced its Eco Responsible Packaging Program this spring.

The sustainability report is available www.responsibility.ups.com/Sustainability. This year’s report was assured by Deloitte & Touche LLP and checked by the Global Reporting Initiative — two other firsts for the company.

Germany stick with Klose for opener

(Reuters) – Germany coach Joachim Loew stuck with out-of-form striker Miroslav Klose for the team’s opening World Cup Group D game against Australia on Sunday.

Sports

He also went for youth over experience on the right wing, giving 20-year-old Thomas Mueller his third cap ahead of 26-year-old Piotr Trochowski.

Klose, who was top scorer at the 2006 World Cup with five goals having finished second with five at the 2002 tournament, only netted three times for Bayern Munich last season.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek left Harry Kewell on the bench and gave Richard Garcia, who usually plays as an attacking midfielder, his eighth cap as the lone striker ahead of Josh Kennedy. Garcia has never scored for Australia.

The ex-Arsenal striker has signed a pre-contract agreement to join New York Red Bulls for the summer’s Major League season.

He has been unable to hold down a regular playing slot at Barcelona this term behind the likes of Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, The Sun reports.

Henry was a hero at the Gunners with 174 goals in 254 appearances before switching to the Barcelona three years ago, where he has scored 35 in only 78 games. (ANI)

Drogba asks Torres to consider joining Chelsea

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has reportedly Liverpool’s top scorer Fernando Torres to accept an offer from The Blues if it comes his way.

According to The Sun, the FA Cup finalists are ready to launch a 50-million-pound bid for Liverpool”s top scorer.

Drogba and Torres fired 58 goals between them this season.

Drogba said: “Every time a new player comes here it is making the club bigger and giving us strength. If there is a chance for Torres to come he will be welcome – because any help is welcome!”

Drogba hopes to add to his 36-goal tally in Saturday”s FA Cup final with Portsmouth.

He insisted: “I want to finish my career here. I love this club.” (ANI)

Scholes is a legend, says Man U teammate Fletcher

London, Apr 21 (ANI): Hailing Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes performance, midfielder Darren Fletcher has described him as a legend.

Scholes scored United’s last-gasp winner in the derby victory over bitter rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

Fletcher said: “We won’t ever see another one like Paul Scholes. He is a legend and a real benchmark. He is not interested in the modern day footballer’s life off the pitch, but he is a world-class player on it.”

“He has probably never really got the true recognition he deserved outside of Manchester United because he never did the media. He didn’t do interviews and never put himself out for things like that,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“I cannot believe he has never been nominated for World, European or domestic individual honours because in his prime he was scoring 20 goals a season from midfield,” he said.

“It is astonishing he has never won a personal award but given the choice of winning something and then having to get up and do the speech, I think he would rather not have won them,” Fletcher added.

There were rumours that Scholes could have retired at the end of the season.

“It is crazy to suggest that he shouldn’t have got another contract. On Saturday he was the best player on the park. Even before his goal he was controlling it at his tempo,” Fletcher said. (ANI)

Desperate to stay at Man U, Berbatov asks Fergie not to sell him

London, Apr 17 (ANI): Out form Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has asked his boss Sir Alex Ferguson not to sell him as he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

Berbatov scored 14 goals during the last term as United won their third consecutive Premier League title.

He has hit another dozen this season but has played second fiddle to Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson is planning to offload his 30.75 million pounds striker this summer, but the Bulgarian striker is desperate to stay.

“People have not seen the real Berbatov this season and I would have liked to have done more for the club. My dream is still to triumph with United and win another league title,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“At Spurs I have scored more goals with less problems and at United it has been more difficult.

“But I do not worry about the critics. In football it is harder to be a forward because people analyse errors more than success. My morale is high and I am always trying to overcome the situation,” Berbatov added. (ANI)

BRIC accepts serious threat of climate change, recommits to UNFCCC goals

Brasilia (Brazil), Apr.16 (ANI): Accepting and acknowledging the serious threat posed by climate change, leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) on Thursday said: “We commit ourselves to promote the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Sixth Conference of the Parties (COP) serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, in Mexico, to

hieve a comprehensive, balanced and binding result to strengthen the implementation of the Convention and the Protocol.”

“We believe that the Convention and the Protocol provide the framework for international negotiations on climate change. The negotiations in Mexico should be more inclusive, transparent, and should result in outcomes that are fair and effective in addressing the challenge of climate change, while reflecting the principles of the Convention, especially the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities,” they said. Man U wants Berbatov to fill void left by Rooney

London, Apr 1 (ANI): Manchester United will be backing Dimitar Berbatov to fill the goals void left by ace striker Wayne Rooney’s injury.

Manchester United is set to be without Rooney for up to a month after the striker sprained his right ankle in Munich.

Reds defender Nemanja Vidic has backed Bulgarian Berbatov to step up his game and fill Rooney’s void.

“We know Wayne is unbelievable. He scored again against Bayern and had another chance, he is one of the best in the world. But Berba showed what he could do at Bolton. He had a great game,” The Sun quoted Vidic, as saying.

“Also this season we have shown we play as a team. We need to believe in ourselves and believe in each other,” he said.

With Michael Owen out for the season with a torn hamstring, Berbatov, 29, is United’s only fit recognised striker.

If United are to stay ahead of their big rivals in the title race and progress in Europe by beating Bayern in Wednesday’s return leg, they will have to play a lot better than they did on Tuesday night, the paper reports.

Rooney put United ahead after just 66 seconds yet they were over-run after that and went down 2-1 to Ivica Olic’s injury-time goal. (ANI)

Liverpool”s Torres warns Champion League rivals that his best is yet to come

London, Mar.29 (ANI): Having scored 20 goals in the 2009-10 season so far, Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has rival Champions League chasers that his best is yet to come.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce described him as ”unstoppable”.

But the Spanish sensation played down the plaudits.

“I”ve scored better goals and, hopefully, the best are still to come. For me it”s about keeping going and scoring more goals. That”s my job. We”re going the right way as a team. The last part of the season has been much better and now we have six games left to continue playing like this,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“We have to be as strong away as we are at home. You could see from the first minute this was a different team compared to the first part of the season. We have confidence now and you can see we are playing well. Now we have to try to win all our games, wait for the other results and see where it leaves us,” he added.

Torres was speaking after scoring two goals against the Black Cats on Sunday.

Bruce said: “Sometimes you have to admit you were beaten by a better team. When Torres and (Steven) Gerrard are in that sort of mood, it becomes very difficult for any side to contain them.”

Kop boss Rafa Benitez said: “It was a good display but this is a long race. Still, it was nice to see the fans and players go home with smiles on their faces.” (ANI)

‘Black mitts’, the secret behind Rooney’s magical scoring spree

London, Mar 27(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that wearing gloves is the secret behind his goal glut, which is making him this season’s highest goal scorer.

Rooney has pulled on black mitts for games in even the mildest of weather, and now reckons they are his lucky charm.

The 24-year-old has also vowed not to take them off until his form, which has seen him score 33 goals so far this season, runs into a lean patch.

“Wayne’s become a bit superstitious about these gloves. And since he started wearing them he”s been scoring plenty of headers – not something he was renowned for,” The Sun quoted an Old Trafford source, as saying.

“If he carries on like this, he could still be wearing these gloves on a baking hot day in May,” he added.

With 26 goals in the Premier League, Rooney tops the list ahead of Chelsea’s Didier Drogba on 24 and Sunderland’s Darren Bent with 20. (ANI)

Henry pained to face ex-club Arsenal in Champions League quarterfinal

London, Mar 23 (ANI): Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has revealed that his heart sank when he learned his Barcelona side had been drawn against Arsenal in the Champions League.

Henry, a former Arsenal skipper, scored 226 goals in 380 appearances for them in eight years before joining Barcelona in 2007.

The French striker said he doesn’t want to play against his old side and certainly would not celebrate if he scored against them in the quarterfinal ties.

“Whenever there is a draw for the Champions League I am in pain. I’m not saying I won’t try to fight or whatever, because that’s the way the game is. But I don’t want to play against Arsenal,” The Daily Express quoted Henry, as saying.

He is set to play against the Gunners for the first time since leaving in the quarter-finalfirst leg on March 31 at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “It will be weird for me to step on the pitch, even if it’s at the Emirates and not Highbury, with another club’s shirt on.”

And, asked if he would celebrate a goal, he said: “Forget about it. No. I do not want to play against Arsenal, simple as that. The bond that I have with the Arsenal fans I will never get anywhere else, because I don’t think I will ever play for another team for that long.

“Eight years – I don’t think I will be with another team for eight years because I am getting old now.” (ANI)

Worst Brit footie team ends 90-match losing streak with victory!

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Harraby Athletic, the worst football team in Britain, has finally tasted victory – after a losing streak of 90 matches.

The side has been on a losing spree since three years and was badly mauled in a 19-0 match in 2006.

The team concedes 10 goals a game on an average and their goalie has seen the ball netted over 400 times in less than three seasons.

The under-14 squad celebrated their first win after beating Edenvale Hawks 3-2 at their home ground, Hammond’s Park.

Sky News quoted coach Brett Preston as saying: “Pure determination has got us there and their faces after the game meant everything.

“All week I’ve had other managers phoning me up to congratulate us on our achievement.

“When we lost our first game 19-0, it could have even been a higher score as the opposing manager tried to help us by swapping players around and telling them to ease off.

“They just couldn’t help scoring against us. Gradually over time, the scores have come down, but we’re always bottom of the table and we’ve never even won a friendly match.”

Harraby has only one point in the Longhorn Youth Football League after the opponents did not play the game.

It consists of players who are either playing for the first time or have been rejected by other teams.he coach said: “They know that if they leave, they might not get the chance of a game as they might not get into another team.”

However, Preston also praised the determination of his boys.

He said: “The boys have been prepared to stick at it and been willing to learn. They turn up for training in all weathers and really deserve a win at last.” (ANI)

Rooney confident of handling intense pressure

London, Sep 4(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed confidence about handling the intense pressure at Manchester United as well as handling responsibilities of the national squad.

At the club level, after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, his responsibility at Old Trafford has doubled, while hopes and aspirations of the nation are on him to lead England to World Cup success.

“I started playing when I was 16 and there has always been expectation and pressure. I have no problem with that. I see it as a challenge,” the Daily Express quoted Rooney, as saying.

“I hope I can be the main man. I am probably playing the best football I have played for England, certainly over the last year. I am really enjoying myself with Manchester United,” he added.

The 23-year-old also said that Man U reckons Cristiano and Tevez’s exit as a big challenge to retain the league title and, personally it is a better opportunity for him to score more goals.

“I want to score more goals. I should be scoring more goals,” Rooney said.

Rooney further said that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, will definitely be the biggest challenge in his career. (ANI)

Top UN official lauds women’s empowerment and representation in India

New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): Top United Nations official Deirdre Boyd on Tuesday said that women’s political representation in the local bodies of India is more than the entire elected women representatives of the world.

Deirdre Boyd, Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India, said this during a function to mark the release of ‘The Millennium Development Goals (MGD) Report 2009′ at New Delhi on Tuesday.

“There are lot of success stories of women empowerment in India particularly when we look at the women’s political representation at the local level. India has nearly one million locally elected leaders…more than the elected women representatives of the world put together,” said Deirdre Boyd.

She also hailed the new Union Budget that was revealed on Monday and said that the new proposals will help in achieving the Minimum Development Goals (MDGs) specified by the UN.eirdre Boyd also added that India has made progress in areas of poverty eradication and primary education.

The Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 has observed that in India there has been a gain of 11 per cent in primary school enrolment between 2000 and 2007. The report also mentions about the progress made by India in the arena of enrolment of girls in the schools.

Further, the report has highlighted the progress made by India to combat AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

“Progress has been made in addressing problems of HIV-AIDS, but other diseases like malaria and tuberculosis in particular have made a comeback. It (tuberculosis) is the real challenge that many countries in South Asia including India will face,” said Biswajit Dhar, Director General, Research and Information System for Developing Countries, United Nations. Michael Owen seals Manchester United switch

London, July 4 (DPA) Striker Michael Owen completed his free-transfer move to English football champions Manchester United Friday.
The 29 year old underwent stringent medical tests before signing a two-year contract on what is believed to be a pay-as-you-play basis with a basic weekly wage topped up by bonuses.

“Michael is a world-class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question,” said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish.”

Owen struggled with injuries in three years at Newcastle United, and with his form sliding fell out of Fabio Capello’s England squad.

He admitted United’s approach had come as a shock.

“I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me and invited me to have breakfast with him next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me,” he said.

“I agreed without a moment’s thought. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.

“I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here.

“I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances,” said Owen.

Michael Owen to join Man U

London, July 3 (ANI): Out of contract striker Michael Owen has agreed to join Manchester United on a 50 per cent pay cut.

United boss Alex Ferguson contacted Owen, 29, on Tuesday and offered him 50,000-pounds-a-week to join the champions – plus huge bonuses depending on appearances and goals.

Owen, however, must pass a stringent medical, which could take place as early as today, before United put pen to paper.

A source close to Owen said: “This is just the boost he needed and now he is hoping that everything can be agreed.”

Fergie’s shock move comes after United missed out on Lyon striker Karim Benzema, sold Cristiano Ronaldo for 80 million pounds and lost Carlos Tevez.

Owen, axed by England boss Fabio Capello, started his career at United’s hated rivals Liverpool. He became a free agent two days ago after his contract ran out at Newcastle.

The only clubs being seriously linked with him were Stoke and Hull, while Everton were said to be weighing up their options and Greek side Olympiakos flatly denied any interest. (ANI)

Ronaldo backs United to make history

London, May 7 (ANI): Cristiano Ronaldo believes Manchester United will make Champions League history in Rome on May 27.

United are just one win away after their powerful 3-1 victory over Arsenal.

I have always believed we were going to win it again. That is what we have been trying to do and now we are in the final, so we have a great opportunity.

It was not an easy match. Arsenal are a good team, so to score three goals at their own ground is just amazing. The whole team were superb and we deserve to be in the final,” The Telegraph quoted Ronaldo, as saying.

Ronaldo said that he was tremendously disappointed about the fact that Darren Fletcher may miss the final after the red card he was shown for a tackle on Cesc Fabregas.

TV replays showed the Scotland international touched the ball before he made contact with the Spaniard, raising some hope that Italian referee Roberto Rosetti will ask for the decision to be overturned. (ANI)

Cruyff says Thierry Henry is the key in Chelsea-Barca face-off

London, May 5 (ANI): Johan Cruyff predicts that French and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry will see off Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.

Henry hit two goals in Saturday’s 6-2 Bernabeu demolition of Real Madrid to take his season’s total to 26.

Henry is expected to overcome a knee injury as Barca bid to improve on the 0-0 first leg draw.

Cruyff declared: “Barca have rediscovered the Henry of Arsenal and this is key.

“Technically he has always been very good. But mentally he is better now and we are seeing the best of him, the same as he was with Arsenal. With Henry in this form Barcelona could aspire to anything,” The Sun quoted Cruyff, as saying.

Fabregas double gives Arsenal easy win over Middlesbrough

London – Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas scored both goals as his side moved closer to a place in next season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Middlesbrough on Sunday. The Spaniard finished off a superb move midway through the first half and made sure of the points by rounding the goalkeeper halfway through the second.

The win means fourth-placed Arsenal need just one more victory from their remaining four games to clinch a place in next year’s competition.

The Gunners, unbeaten in 20 games, play Manchester United in the first leg of their semi-final in this year’s Champions League competition on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, remain locked in a relegation dog-fight, stuck third-from-bottom and four points short of safety.

220 million dollar malaria drugs initiative launched in Oslo

Oslo – Eleven mainly African countries are to be offered cheaper, more effective malaria drugs as part of a partnership between international agencies and governments, officials said Friday.

Benin, Cambodia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda are the first countries to take part of the programme – launched in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Some 220 million dollars will be spent during the first two years to buy and distribute more effective anti-malaria drugs. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will manage the scheme.

Donors included UNITAID – an international mechanism to finance drugs against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, created by France and supported by Norway and 26 other nations – and Britain.

“Controlling malaria is a key component of the global effort to reach the Millennium Development Goals by 2015,” UNITAID board chairman Philippe Douste-Blazy said.

Around nine in 10 malaria cases worldwide occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Transmitted via mosquito bites malaria is estimated to kill more than 2,000 children every day.

Speakers at the launch included Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, who said in addition to costing lives, malaria also costs “developing countries billions of dollars each year in lost economic output.”

“By controlling malaria, we can improve school attendance and productivity, open new areas to business and tourism and reduce health costs,” he said.

New drugs, known as artemisinin combination therapies or ACTs, were needed since the malaria parasite has developed resistance to old drugs like chloroquine, Awa-Marie Coll-Seck, head of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, said.

In addition to new drugs, there has been success in tackling malaria by distributing mosquito bed nets in malaria-affected areas, Coll-Seck said citing Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimababwe. (dpa)
