Critics predict Emmy nods for “Good Wife”, “Glee”

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – General cynicism about the medium seems to be a job qualification for being a television critic. But this year there has been a sea change of sorts. Contacted for The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Emmy survey, they were less critical, heaping praise on a wide swatch of contenders. Here are wish lists in the major categories.

Entertainment | Television | Media

DRAMA SERIES

Maureen Ryan (Chicago Tribune): “‘Lost’ (ABC) hasn’t been perfect, but it has been an incredible ride, and the show should be recognized for that ride. It may not always get it right, but it’s always trying. ‘Sons of Anarchy’ (FX), for some reason, is not on awards radars, and it should be. It is a jaw-droppingly excellent show, and has kept me on the edge of my seat while it fires on all cylinders.”

Neal Justin (The Minneapolis Star-Tribune): “It would be nice to see (HBO’s) ‘Treme’ on the list, but it may be too complex for Emmy — though that won’t stop them from honoring the ever-confusing ‘Lost.’ ‘Mad Men’ (AMC) will also make for strong contention, but will ‘Damages’ (FX) make the cut? Don’t bet on it.”

Tom Gliatto (People magazine): “In what medium would ‘The Good Wife’ (CBS) not be nominated? If televisions were toasters, I guess. The first season was an exemplary piece of both craftsmanship and design. Also, ‘Breaking Bad’ (AMC) is a weekly exercise in excruciating discomfort, and ‘Dexter’s’ (Showtime) 12-week season played as taut and unforgiving as a Jim Thompson novel.”

Matthew Gilbert (The Boston Globe): “‘The Good Wife’ has been surprisingly good for a legal procedural. The cases of the week are strikingly timely and engaging, and the ongoing story lines are expertly managed. ‘Treme’ may be too graceful and tragic and humane for Emmy voters. I hope not.”

John Griffiths (US Weekly): “I’m a sucker for tales about the pendulum of good and evil, and while it’s my belief that the ‘Lost’ writers overestimated the show’s — and their own — genius, they deserve endless good vibes for shooting for the moon in a medium that normally shoots for Irvine.”

COMEDY SERIES

Ryan: “I think the nomination for ‘Glee’ (Fox) is inevitable. And that’s fine, but my hope is all of this attention doesn’t go to the show’s head for Season 2. ‘Glee’ has a hard time being dependably good, and it could stunt-cast itself to death.”

Griffiths: “Every episode, ’30 Rock’ (NBC) leaves me with one indelible scene or line that makes me laugh out loud days later. Kenneth the page shows up as a muppet in HDTV! Jack rushes to his love as ‘Grey’s Anatomy’-like emo music soars — and it turns out to be a weird guy with a boombox. On and on. And as crazy as the characters are, the writers obviously care about them. That’s key.”

Gliatto: “‘Modern Family’ (ABC) is a family sitcom that reinvigorates the formula with incredibly sophisticated writing and a perfectly balanced ensemble. ‘Glee’ has music, energy, camp, a certain amount of heart, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison’s hair. ‘Parks and Recreation’s’ second season showed a sitcom that had really found its sensibility: gentle, unrestrained, silly. Someone show it some love.”

DRAMA ACTRESS

Glenn Garvin (The Miami Herald): “Once you list Julianna Margulies (‘The Good Wife’) in this category, there’s no use wasting your breath speculating about who gets the rest of the spots. She seems like a dead-solid lock — a great actress playing an enormously sympathetic character in a popular show. They ought to just FedEx her the Emmy now.”

Ryan: “Katey Sagal (‘Sons of Anarchy’) kicked ass this season. She had one of the most difficult story lines for a lead actress I’ve seen — her character was raped and she has to keep the rape secret. If you think she’s just a funny lady from ‘Married … With Children,’ you have not read the memo.”

Justin: “There’s a wild-card slot here I would love to see go to Lauren Graham (NBC’s ‘Parenthood’), but if Emmy never gave her a nod for her work in ‘Gilmore Girls,’ it’s unlikely they’ll do it for ‘Parenthood.’ A more likely candidate is Lisa Edelstein, who got more exposure this season on ‘House’ (Fox).”

COMEDY ACTRESS

Ryan: “Amy Poehler (NBC’s ‘Parks and Recreation’) has completely reinvented her character. They’ve really turned that show around. A year ago I would have said this show is not working at all, but she’s immensely entertaining now.”

Garvin: “How about some support for the female lead of a sitcom everybody loves for its male nerds? Without Kaley Cuoco’s (CBS’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’) sweetly sexy presence, the show wouldn’t be funny, just sad. Special anti-nomination rant: Why do Emmy voters love Mary-Louise Parker’s indolent, amoral character in ‘Weeds’ (Showtime) so much? I’d like to slap one of those lattes down her throat.”

COMEDY ACTOR

Justin: “It’s too bad Ed O’Neill (‘Modern Family’) didn’t throw his hat in the lead actor race; he would have been a shoo-in, if only to see the guy who created Al Bundy give an acceptance speech. This should be a showdown between Alec Baldwin (’30 Rock’) and Jim Parsons (‘The Big Bang Theory’). This could be the year for ‘Big Bang’ and Parsons.”

Gilbert: “Jason Schwartzman (HBO’s ‘Bored to Death’) was able to maximize his guarded deadpan in the first season of ‘Bored.’ He has great comic timing, positioning his punchlines on the downbeat.”

Griffiths: “Thomas Jane (HBO’s ‘Hung’) shouldn’t be overlooked for his hilariously deflated, if wildly endowed, dude. And can Stephen Colbert barge in here, please? This season more than ever he’s proved himself to be a grand master of satire. Anyone who can pull off a debate with their split-screen selves on a regular basis deserves at least one nod.”

DRAMA ACTOR

Gilbert: “I really want to see Ray Romano (TNT’s ‘Men of a Certain Age’) on this list. His performance was one of the best surprises of the season. He was tragic, endearing, self-loathing, comical and filled with suppressed rage. He helped the show expand TV’s definition of masculinity. I’d also like to see Wendell Pierce here — he is the heart and soul of ‘Treme,’ forlorn but surviving.”

Garvin: “The startling evolution of Michael C. Hall’s character in ‘Dexter’ (Showtime) last season — learning the downside of his nascent human emotion, that caring about something means also having something to lose — gives him a serious shot.”

Griffiths: “Bryan Cranston and Michael C. Hall are givens; they continue to make their wildly unsavory characters somehow root-worthy — no small feat. But I’d really like to see some Emmy love for unsung leads like Josh Holloway (‘Lost’). The irritated stomp of a swagger he’s given Sawyer — he really created a bittersweet hero in the Humphrey Bogart/Robert Mitchum vein, a universal Everyman.”

Gliatto: “He won before in the supporting category, but Terry O’Quinn’s Locke became so central to the entire mythos of ‘Lost’ this year that he deserves to be bumped up. (Editor’s note: He was again submitted in supporting.) Timothy Olyphant’s clever, droll performance (on FX’s ‘Justified’) had just enough juice to give it a light sizzle — a model of what an actor should be doing when he lands this playful sort of vehicle.”

CORRECTED-(OFFICIAL)-Sport, sex to boost French 3D TV

(Gfk corrects its May sales estimate in paragraph 8 to 5,000 from 1,000 3D television sets)

* New content will boost 3D TV sets sales

* Technical glitches to hamper growth initially

* Revenues still unknown for producers and broacasters

By Marie Mawad and Cyril Altmeyer

PARIS, June 1 (Reuters) – French firms are counting on sport and porn to lure viewers into buying 3D TV sets, but mass adoption of the new technology will come only when viewing comfort improves and prices fall, experts say.

Three-dimensional (3D) TV sets made by Panasonic (6752.T), Sony (6758.T) and Samsung (000830.KS) hit the French market in May and even if volumes have remained small, manufacturers are betting on a swift take-off.

“Viewers reached out with their arms to the candies in the Haribo adverts in theatres. When boobs pop out of the screen it’s the same, people reach out to touch them,” said Philippe Gerard, co-founder of 3Dlized, which is working with adult-content producer Marc Dorcel on a new 3D offering.

Since James Cameron’s highly profitable Avatar opened the door for 3D technology in cinemas, producers and broadcasters for the box have been rubbing their hands in glee, hoping to bank on life-like effects and the new sensations made possible.

Experts see football, rugby and boxing as well as other forms of entertainment such as opera, ballet and erotic shows leading the seduction campaign.

Other types of images like those shown in news bulletins are thought to be inappropriate for the new medium.

“Unlike HD television, 3D doesn’t mean a transformation of television in the short term. We’re not going to tell the French: ‘Tomorrow you have to get 3D or you won’t have a telly’,” Gilles Maugars, deputy director for technologies at TF1, told Reuters.

Market research firm Gfk sees sales in France reaching 200,000 units by the end of the year, and estimates sales for May alone at about 5,000 sets. Manufacturers are more upbeat, aiming for half a million TVs sold this year.

Gfk sees French sales for all TVs growing by 18 percent this year to 8.7 million units.

Prices for a 3D box start from around 1,300 euros ($1,600), plus about 100 euros for an additional pair of goggles, a must-have for each viewer.

WORLD CUP KICK-START

With major sport events planned for 2010, and especially the football World Cup tournament, 3D unit sales should get a kick-start, said Ghislaine Le Rhun-Gautier, head of 3D at French telecom group Orange (FTE.PA).

Orange, which has already broadcast 3D images from the French Open free of charge for its TV subscribers, is amongst five networks chosen by French commercial channel TF1 (TFFP.PA) to air images from the World Cup, alongside Canal Sat, France Sat, Free (ILD.PA) and Bouygues Telecom (BOUY.PA).

Experts say broadcasters will find it hard at first to make subscribers pay for this content, as they are still fumbling with visual and technical glitches.

Text, like that on a scoreboard, is still uncomfortable to read in 3D, said Vince Pizzica, head of strategy, technology and research at France’s Technicolor (TCH.PA).

Some shooting angles popular in 2D can be unsuitable in 3D, and cause headaches, nausea or even vomiting, experts say.

“The technology is not yet mastered and quality is still disparate”, said Joseph Guegan, VP for technology at pay-TV group Canal Plus (CNLP.PA), which plans to air 3D versions of only a few programmes this year, including sport.

Citing these visual issues as well as unanswered questions about financial returns, experts are not betting on a channel that would broadcast in 3D 24 hours a day.

“We still have to find the right recipe for TV, we’ve only got hypotheses today”, says Gilles Maugars of broadcaster TF1.

Some telecom operators plan to launch video on demand (VOD) services as more 3D content emerges and technical difficulties get sorted out, while producers of erotic content are pushing for a monthly subscription model.

Marc Dorcel’s 3D offering will be available for a 20-30 euros monthly subscription, Chief Executive Gregory Dorcel said, adding the group, which has revenues of around 20 million euros, invested 1.5-2 million euros in its 3D project.

Family friend says the Gores just ”grew apart” after 40 years of marriage

New York, June 4 (ANI): Washington Post journalist Sally Quinn, a longtime friend of the Gores, said Al and Tipper just grew apart after 40 years of marriage.

Quinn told CBS” “The Early Show” on Wednesday that she had never heard any rumors of infidelity and thinks the pair just “grew apart.”

“They were sort of nomads in a way. They went back to Tennessee, but they didn”t really live there,” the New York Daily News quoted Quinn, as saying.

“Al traveled a lot. They sort of migrated to the West Coast, where Tipper has an apartment, and Al has a lot of business. But he was traveling all the time. And, I think, their interests just diverged,” she added.

Quinn also said Tipper may have wanted to branch out on her own.

“It may be that she”s just tired of being the wife, and wants to be someone who can accomplish something on her own,” Quinn said.

Although Quinn believes neither of the Gores was unfaithful, she is deeply upset by the couple”s split.

“The interesting thing is, that usually when something like this happens, you get a sense of glee, people that are saying, ”I told you so,” or ”I knew it” or whatever,” she said. “I have only encountered sadness.”

The Gores announced their separation in an e-mail to friends on Tuesday, writing the split was “a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration.” (ANI)

Sport, sex to soothe French 3D TV teething pains

Susan Boyle offered cameo in TV hit Glee

London, May 21 (ANI): TV bosses in America have begged Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle to make a guest appearance on hit TV show ‘Glee’.

They hope the Britain’s Got Talent star will record a cameo for a festive special they have planned.

And they want Susan, 49, to serve up a lot of laughs as a school dinner lady, reports the Daily Star.

The show’s creator Ryan Murphy hopes the singer will jump at the role.

He believes show character Kurt – played by Chris Colfer, 19 – would love to revamp her look.

When asked who Susan would play, Murphy revealed: “I have two words for you: ‘Lunch. Lady.’ I think Kurt would just die to give her a Christmas makeover. I don’t know if she’s interested but it’s been pitched.” (ANI)

Sunday will be crucial for both India and hosts WI

Bridgetown, May 8 — If misery does indeed love company, then India can console themselves with the fact that they are not alone, at least for now. Having been handed a proper hiding by Australia, India would have noted with some glee that their next opponents, West Indies, suffered similarly at Sri Lanka’s hands.

When the two teams are done with their battle on Sunday, one will be closer to a spot in the final four, the other may as well pack their bags. Captains seldom dwell on losses, and this was true both of M.S. Dhoni and Chris Gayle.

If anything, Gayle was forced to think about plans for the next game soon after losing their first Super 8 match. “Yes, we can use the short ball, but we have to be careful at the same time,” said Gayle when asked if he would try and mimic Australia’s tactics.

“It’s a small ground and India have quality batsmen to make necessary adjustments.” Those adjustments, from India’s point of view, are essentially a change in mindset.

With the approach of trying to hit themselves out of trouble failing against Australia, a return to a safety-first method cannot be ruled out. “We tried to fight fire with fire but it did not work,” Dhoni conceded.

“Sometimes you have to be a bit patient, wait for the ball to get slightly older and then go after the bowling.” If short-pitched bowling was the lead talking point, India’s decision to put the opposition in wasn’t far behind.

It’s another strategy that could be revised, given just how little extra assistance India’s pacers got. Add to this the fact that India played only two quickies, and opened the bowling with the off-spin of Harbhajan Singh and the decision to bowl first seemed ripe for revision.

“Whenever the team is batting second, it’s always going to be a pressure situation. If the team batting first gets 190 and the chasing team loses a couple of early wickets, it automatically gets on the back-foot,” said Gayle.

“Teams will be looking at batting first on this sort of wicket. Once you get in, you can definitely play your shots.

Lady GaGa ”Most Influential Artist of 2010”

London, April 30 (ANI): Lady GaGa has been voted the world”s most influential artist in a new poll by America”s Time magazine.

The singer clinched the top spot in the list of 25 stars, with Conan O”Brien coming second and Kathryn Bigelow and Oprah Winfrey coming third and fourth respectively, reports the Daily Star.

GaGa”s entry featured a tribute from veteran popstar Cyndi Lauper, who described the ”Poker Face” singer”s lyrics as “incredibly literary” and “sophisticated”.

Lauper wrote: “When I see someone like GaGa, I sit back in admiration… She isn”t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art.”

The top ten also featured Robert Pattinson at number six and Taylor Swift at nine. Meanwhile, Glee star Lea Michele was a surprise entry at number 13, above established stars such as Simon Cowell and Sir Elton John. (ANI)

After Madonna, “Glee” creator wants Britney

New York, April 28(ANI): Musical television series ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy is hoping to devote an entire episode to the music of Britney Spears.

A similar episode dedicated to Madonna had been aired earlier.

Murphy’s manager floated the idea via Twitter following the Queen of Pop episode.

“I”m interested in the Britney Spears idea. I”ve always loved her,” the New York Post quoted Murphy as telling Entertainment Weekly.

He added: “I”m entertaining it. I think young kids would like that.”

Murphy also hopes to do similar shows on Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel and Courtney Love.

“I actually ran into Courtney Love the other day and talked to her,” he told EW. “She”s interested.” (ANI)

Web sitcom The Guild’s video tops UK iTunes chart

London, Aug 22 (ANI): A music video by makers of the cult internet soap The Guild has ripped apart the likes of Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas to capture the number one slot in the UK iTunes chart.

(Do You Wanna Date My) Avatar was written to popularise the third series of the show, a tale of people playing an online role-playing game.

The lyrics have lines like: “You’ll never see my actual face. Our love will be in virtual space.”

Almost half a million people have accessed the video since its upload on Monday. The song itself occupies the second position in the Amazon US download chart.

Felicia Day, actress and writer of The Guild, was “a little bit surprised” by the phenomenal success of the track, and said the response by the audience had been “very cool”.

The BBC quoted Day as saying: “We beat the establishment and it fills me with glee.

“One of the things that drives me is to do things differently…. Most people would be working with a label and going through a lot of hoops.

“I think our success empowers everybody who feels like they can’t get their art out there.”

Day who plays Codex in the award-winning sitcom came up with the song when she was writing scripts for the new series, which is financed and distributed by Microsoft via Xbox Marketplace.

“We do 12 episodes per series, and we always owe an extra video for our Xbox order, and I thought ‘wouldn’t it be fun to do something musical? I was listening to really bad 1990s dance songs – C+C Music Factory, Stacey Q – and that was my inspiration,” she said.

TV scriptwriter Jed Whedon composed the music for the number.

The track also features an “intricate and clearly masterful” rap by The Guild co-stars Jeff Lewis and Sandeep Parikh. (ANI)
