Red Knights not to offer more than 1-bn dollars to Man U owners

London, May 11 (ANI): The Red Knights, a group of wealthy Manchester United fans, have ruled out offering the club owners in excess of one billion pounds.

The Glazer family bought Manchester United for 790 million pounds in 2005, against a wave of opposition from fans.

The Glazer family, who tomorrow mark their fifth anniversary as United owners, has started a media offensive to underline their determination not to sell the club, saying the pipeline of commercial deals point to sustained growth enabling the club to manage its debt burden.

Sky News’ City editor Mark Kleinman revealed the bid limit shortly before the Red Knights released a statement announcing that they would not offer “above fair value” for the club.

“The Red Knights are now in the advanced stages of preparing their offer for Manchester United. My understanding, based on what my sources have said, is that they have privately ruled out offering more than a billion pounds for Manchester United,” said Kleinman.

“This comes after speculation last week that the Glazers had turned down offers of 1.5 billion pounds for the club in the past,” he said.

In a statement obtained in advance by Sky News, the Red Knights said they had held conversations with investors, which had reinforced their belief that it would be “wrong to offer above fair value.”

They say this is particularly important due to the club”s need to reduce its debt and the fact that the fair value could be expected to fall over time due to the headwinds facing the game of football.

Commenting on the statement, Kleinman said: “That fair value is a critical number because if what the Red Knights deem to be fair value is unacceptable to the Glazers, then it looks like there will be no deal.” (ANI)

Man U players warned not to join anti-Glazer protest

London, May 8 (ANI): Keeping in mind plans of rebel Manchester United supporters to flood the Old Trafford stadium with the champions’ old colours to protest against the Glazer family’s ownership, players have been ordered not to pick up any such scarves hurled on the pitch after Sunday’s Premier League game.

Pressure group Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) announced on Friday that they would be handing out free “Glazers Out” kits containing a flag, whistle and card emblazoned with the word “GO”.

They blame the American family for saddling the club with huge debts and want fans to hold up the cards when TV cameras focus on them or if United score against Stoke City.

United players have been warned that they must not give the “Glazers Out” campaign publicity by donning anything green and gold, like ex-star David Beckham did when he returned with AC Milan earlier this year.

“The word has come down from on high that the lads should only pick up red and white scarves, hats and flags. The Beckham incident was quite embarrassing for the club and the last thing they want is for Wayne Rooney or Ryan Giggs to be seen in green and gold,” The Sun quoted a United source, as saying.

In an email to supporters, MUST said: “Win, lose or draw, let’s call time on the Glazers. The manager, the players, the supporters – we’re all part of one big Manchester United family. The Glazers are not part of our family. We need to make that clear!”

Club chief executive David Gill said last week he would rather see the stadium full of red and white scarves instead of green and gold. (ANI)

Glazers snub 1.5 billion pound bid for Manchester United

London, May 7 (ANI): The US-based Glazer family has reportedly rejected a 1.5 billion bid for Manchester United.

The group of wealthy United fans were understood to be planning a 1.2 billion pound offer for the club this summer.

But news of the Glazers” reluctance to accept a higher offer, believed to be from a Middle East consortium last year, is a massive stumbling block, The Sun reports.

United supporters have shown their discontent for the Glazer regime with their ”green and gold” protests at Old Trafford this season.

Fans are unhappy with the lack on investment in the team, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo”s world record 80-million-pound sale to Real Madrid last year.

Supporters are also worried by the club”s spiralling debts which stand at over 700-million-pounds. (ANI)

Manchester United play down Real Madrid’s Ronaldo ‘bid’

London, Apr.4 (ANI): Manchester United have played down reports of Spanish football club Real Madrid offering 75 million pounds for Portuguese star striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sources at Old Trafford insisted last night that there was no substance to the claims, in line with the club’s public stance that Ronaldo, under contract until 2012, will not be leaving Manchester in the near future.

It is widely believed in Spain that Ronaldo has made clear his intention to leave the European champions at the end of the current campaign after striking a deal – rumored by some to have the blessing of Sir Alex Ferguson, an outspoken critic of Madrid’s transfer policy – with both his present and prospective employers.

Ronaldo has made no secret of his desire to play at Bernabeu at some stage in his career.

A sky-high fee may tempt the Glazer family, who own United, to sell, but any deal would first have to overcome Ferguson’s considerable objections, reports The Telegraph.

But, according to The Guardian, Ronaldo is ready to leave for Real Madrid.

The paper claims that Real Madrid has held secret negotiations with the player.

Real Madrid have put in place a deal with Cristiano Ronaldo’s advisers that will see him leave Manchester United this summer if the world footballer of the year gets his way.

The Guardian says Ronaldo remains determined to move to the Bernab‚u and it is understood his salary and contractual terms have already been determined as part of a planned world-record 75 million pound transfer.

It is understood that various pledges were made to ensure the deal happens and that everyone involved in the negotiations made a pact not to discuss the agreement in public.

That strategy explains why Ronaldo has stopped talking about his “dream move”, but it proved too difficult for one of Real’s club’s directors, Pedro Trapote, who tipped off the El Mundo newspaper in December.

“If you are asking me what we are going to do now, then I would tell you that we have already signed the best player for the summer,” he said in a recorded interview, intended to be an off-the-record briefing.

Asked to clarify that he meant Ronaldo, he added: “The best of the best. It is Cristiano, there is no other. It is better that we do not say anything at the moment, though. It is best to not say anything because there are some clauses that prevent us from announcing it now.”

Sir Alex Ferguson reacted furiously at the time, insisting that he would not “sell a virus” to “that mob”, but it now appears that Trapote was speaking in good faith, having been privy to what was taking place behind the scenes.

Ronaldo’s cousin, Luis Felipe, added: “He’s won everything with United and he needs new challenges with a new team.”

Ronaldo is currently United’s leading scorer with 18 goals, but he managed 42 in the previous campaign, and there have been times when his body language, scarcely celebrating some goals, has come under scrutiny.

Nonetheless, Ferguson’s determination to keep him is understandable given Ronaldo’s standing in the world game and the fact that, at 24, he is still relatively young in football terms.

In total, Ronaldo has scored 110 goals for United in 233 starts and 47 substitute appearances – a staggering strike-rate for a player who is essentially a right-winger. (ANI)
