Bono’s back surgery forces U2 to axe Glastonbury gig

London, May 26 (ANI): U2 rockers have postponed their entire North American tour and cancelled their appearance at Glastonbury following Bono’s emergency back surgery.

The 50-year-old singer was taken to a hospital in Germany on Friday after he complained of suffering “severe pain” and “partial paralysis” during rehearsals for their 360 Degree world tour in Munich, reports The Daily Express.

He underwent a surgery immediately after neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn was convinced that he will make a full recovery but will need at least two months rest.

“He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg. The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis,” said neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn.

“Bono is now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit. His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation,” he added.

The band have also been forced to cancel their prestigious headlining appearance at Glastonbury on 25 June (10).

Bono admits he is shattered to let his fans down.

He says, “I”m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special.” (ANI)

Kylie Minogue can’t believe sister Dannii is pregnant

London, May 20 (ANI): Kylie Minogue says she still can”t believe her little sister Dannii is pregnant – and admits that she keeps thinking the X Factor judge just has ‘a balloon up her jumper’.

“I said to Dannii, ”I think I”m a rational person and I”ve just felt the baby kick, I know that”s all reality,” The Sun quoted the pop star saying.

“But at the same time, as your sister, it”s just so surreal.

“”It”s like someone”s just put a balloon up your jumper,’” she added.

The Australian star is already an aunt as her brother has two children, but said it is “different” this time because Dannii, 38, is her sister.

The pop princess reckons even feeling her tiny niece or nephew-to-be kicking does not make it seem any more realistic.

Minogue is trying to work her dates out so that she can be around for her sister’s delivery, and is very excited by how well her sister has looked while expecting her first child.

“We all want to be like that!”

She added, “She”s just absolutely shining and I couldn”t be any more proud of her than I am.

“I saw her just before she left and she”s glowing. It”s very exciting for the whole family.”

Minogue, who will be busy touring and working for her next album, has denied that she would want to replace Danii as the next X-factor judge.

She said, “It”s a little impractical and I think that it”s really Dannii”s gig and she excels in that.

“I”ve never done it, maybe I”d be OK but I just think she does it so well.” (ANI)

Pampling checks out Woods’ problem swing

Rod Pampling was in the TPC Sawgrass locker room when another player asked him if he wanted to play nine holes in preparation for this week’s Players Championship.

The amiable Queenslander readily accepted Monday’s offer. After all, you would be a fool to turn down any chance for a practice round with a bloke who has won 14 major championships.

“I was getting some medicine from the doctor and (Tiger Woods) just walked past and we traded some comments,” Pampling said ahead of Thursday’s first round.

“Then he (Woods) said are you going to play nine holes? I said yep and he said let’s go. It was not planned.”

Pampling used to play quite often with Woods, thanks to his friendship with caddie Steve Williams, who once worked briefly for the Queenslander, before picking up the slightly higher paying gig with Woods.

Even though Woods last week played perhaps the worst round of his life, a second round 79 to miss the cut by eight strokes in Charlotte, Pampling nonetheless was delighted at the chance to pick the world number one’s brain.

“I asked what he was working on. He’s still working on stuff, although I don’t think he’s hit as many balls as he normally would lately. Obviously he’s got a lot of stuff going on in his personal life,” Pampling said.

“Besides his driver, everything else is pretty solid. He stood up on the first hole and smashed it (down the middle).

“He only hit one bad drive (at the par-four fifth). That was the only one you’d say was the way right one.

“Other than that it was pretty solid. I liked his ball flight. It was a little lower ball flight than he used to hit.”

Cracks in the armour

Pampling expects Woods to bounce back with a much better performance this week, but others are not so sure.

Woods tied for fourth at last month’s Masters in his first event back after a nearly five-month break tending to his personal problems.

But some, including Geoff Ogilvy, thought Woods got the job done with smoke-and-mirrors at Augusta, and were not surprised he struggled in Charlotte.

Frank Nobilo, a former tour pro who is now an astute analyst with The Golf Channel, is not impressed with Woods’ swing.

“I think he got through Augusta on some great memories. It was not until really Saturday that you started see the pressure,” Nobilo said.

“Pressure causes cracks, I don’t care who you are.

“His whole career he’s feared the ball that goes left, not unlike Ben Hogan.

“I know there’s a truck-load going on off the course, so it’s hard for him to focus and I think he uses a lot more emotional energy getting around than he used to, because of the way he plays these days. He can’t just play by mechanics.

“When you feel everything is going to go right but you know you might hit it left, every swing you make, you feel like you’re trying to save it. As soon as you relax a bit that hook or pull comes back.”

Sir Elton John gig banned in Egypt

New York, May 4 (ANI): British pop icon Sir Elton John was banned from performing at an upcoming private concert in Egypt.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the 63-year-old singer, who is openly homosexual, was apparently barred from performing at the May 18 show by the head of Egypt’s Musician Union because of his “anti-religious sentiments.”

The head of the union, Mounir al Wasimi said to a foreign news agency that Sir Elton’s claim that Jesus was gay and his demand for Middle Eastern countries to allow sexual freedom amongst gays was ridiculous.

The multimillionaire star sparked off controversy in February, when he commented that there was no tolerance for homosexuals in the Middle East.

“I don”t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you”re as good as dead,” The New York Post quoted Sir Elton as telling U.S. magazine Parade.

He also claimed Jesus was a “super-intelligent gay man” who “understood human problems.” (ANI)

Lily Allen smokes during gig

London, Mar 8 (ANI): Lily Allen smoked a cigarette onstage, even though she was suffering from a chest infection.

Disregarding the smoking ban, the ‘Smile’ hitmaker lit up at the MEN Arena in Manchester.

However, she apologized to the crowd for off key vocals.

“I”ve got a bout of bronchitis so sorry if my singing”s a bit s**t. Not that it”s any good anyway,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

Allen had flouted the smoking ban in Liverpool in December, forcing local authorities to reprimand her.

She was even fined last year for smoking onstage in Paris.

Smoking in public places is banned in both Britain and France since 2007.

MJ Vienna tribute gig postponed

London, September 12 (ANI): The concert in honour of Michael Jackson slated to take place in Vienna this month has been rearranged for London in June next year.

The singer’s brother Jermaine previously named a host of artists who would perform at the tribute that was set to take place in front of former imperial Schoenbrunn Palace on September 26.

But the former ‘Jackson 5′ member revealed many top artists were unavailable for the date due to prior commitments.

“Numerous stars were just not able to change their schedules to make a live appearance at the Vienna event possible,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

He added: “Many artists and performers who I have spoken to personally told me that it would be a great honour to be part of this memorial concert for my late brother.

“However, due to the short time-frame it was not possible for many of them to change their schedule so that they could be on stage in Vienna on 26 September, therefore we decided, after careful consideration, to change the date of the tribute concert to June 2010 – just a few weeks before the first anniversary of his untimely death.

“Now we have eight months to put this monumental show together and not just eight weeks.”

Organisers World Tribute Productions promised a refund to all ticket holders for the Vienna concert.

Spokeswoman Nina Elland also said: “We need time to confirm the location. We are definitely moving to London and Wembley Stadium is our favourite location.” (ANI)

Israeli MP says Livni attending Madonna gig illegal

Jerusalem, Sep. 10 (ANI): Likud politician Danny Danon has filed a complaint with the Knesset Ethics Committee against opposition leader Tzipi Livni for accepting an invitation from Madonna to sit in a VIP section at the singer’s recent concert in Tel Aviv.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Livni was invited by Madonna to sit in a special section next to the ‘Queen of Pop’s family as a special guest when the two had dinner on the eve of the first show last week.

According to Danon, Livni paid 490 shekels, the price for a regular spot, and therefore, the acceptance of Madonna’s invitation violated the prohibition against MKs receiving gifts.

“The fact that she received a present violates ethics laws,” Danon told Israel Radio on Thursday. “I expect a swift response from the Knesset Ethics Committee.”

The diva dined with the Kadima leader last Monday, at Madonna’s request, Livni spokesman Gil Messing said last week.

Livni “was very impressed with Madonna and found her to be a very interesting person,” said Messing, adding that the two decided to keep the content of their conversation private. (ANI)

Madge’s Sticky and Sweet world tour highest grossing solo act ever

London, Sep 4 (ANI): Queen of Pop Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet world tour is said to have made the highest amount ever earned by a solo artist grossing at 408 million dollars, revealed promoters Live Nation.

Madge, 51, had played her last gig on September 2 in Israel, after performing in 32 countries.

And she is said to have broken her own record, set by her Confessions tour, which was named the all-time top in 2006, after it made 194 million dollars.

“She is absolutely one of the great performers of all time,” the BBC quoted Arthur Fogel, from Live Nation, as saying.

“That this tour will take its place as the second highest grossing tour in the history of our business says it all,” he added.

The Rolling Stones’ Bigger Bang tour, which ran from 2005 to 2007, is the highest grossing tour of all time, with an earning of 558 million dollars.

Madonna played 85 shows, and even set an attendance record for the biggest crowds in history in Zurich, Switzerland, where she drew 72,000 fans.

And in Helsinki, Finland, Madonna sold more than 85,000 tickets, making it the biggest single show by an artist in history in Scandinavia. (ANI)
