Police hit Georgian mafia in European raids

More than 60 suspected members of the Georgian mafia have been arrested by police in raids across Europe.

Police have arrested suspected mafia members on charges of drug smuggling and money laundering in six European countries.

Spanish radio says most of the arrests were of Russians and Georgians based in the Spanish cities of Valencia and Barcelona.

Other suspected members of the syndicate have been caught in France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Anti-corruption prosecutors in Spain have described the raids as a major operation.

Georgia accused of approving Russian invasion hoax

The opposition party in Georgia has accused the government of being behind a fake news report showing Russian tanks had entered the capital.

There was widespread panic across Georgia with emergency services receiving thousands of calls and many elderly people packing their bags in response to the news that Russian tanks were rolling in to Tblisi.

The 20-minute television report claimed opposition leaders had called on Russian forces now stationed in South Ossetia to intervene in political unrest after local council elections in the capital.

The report showed footage taken from the August 2008 war that saw Russian forces pour into Georgia and bomb targets across the country.

The network apologised, explaining that the report was intended to be a simulation of what might happen after the elections, but that those in charge of the broadcast had forgotten to put a banner on the footage making clear that it was not real.

A brief notice before the report said it was a “simulation” of possible events but the report itself carried no warning.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili added to the furore by appearing to defend the broadcast.

“It was indeed a very unpleasant program but the most unpleasant thing is that it is extremely close to what can happen and to what Georgia’s enemy has conceived,” he said in televised remarks.

Opposition leader Nino Burjanadze – who was among those the report claimed had joined forces with Russia – said the newscast was government-organised propaganda.

“This government’s treatment of its own people is outrageous,” said Ms Burjanadze, who heads the Democratic Movement-United Georgia party.

“I am sure that every second of this program was agreed with Saakashvili. Many people suffered psychological trauma.”

Government officials denied any advance knowledge of the report and denounced it as irresponsible.

Georgia’s National Communications Commission said it had launched an investigation.

US army set for “hopping rotochut” that hops to avoid rubble trouble

London, September 19 (ANI): The U.S. army’s fleet of robots will soon be enhanced with the addition of forthcoming reconnaissance craft called the ‘hopping rotochute’, which will be capable of travelling deep into obstacle-ridden spaces like caves and rubble-laden buildings to video what it finds.

The self-righting probe is being developed for the Army Research Lab in Aberdeen, Maryland, by Eric Beyer and Mark Costello, a pair of robotics engineers at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

The project attains significance because present-day military robots, which run on small tank-style tracks, cannot cope with irregular surfaces and obstacles such as rubble or boulders.

“They usually have trouble and get stuck with even low obstacles and walls a couple of feet high,” says Costello.

Although small helicopters are one alternative, continuous flying drains the batteries fast.

Thus, Costello stresses the need for a rotor-powered, bottom-heavy, self-righting vehicle that spends most of its time on the ground, conserving battery power.

AS to whether repeated hopping might harm the craft, a spokesman for the Impact Centre at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, UK, said: “From a crashworthiness point of view this concept looks perfectly feasible. There should be no problem with the vehicle surviving hundreds of impacts, which is roughly equivalent to dropping a mobile phone from waist height.” (ANI)

Oldest-known fiber materials used by humans date back to 34,000 years

Washington, September 11 (ANI): A team of archaeologists and paleobiologists has discovered flax fibers that are more than 34,000 years old, making them the oldest fibers known to have been used by humans.

The fibers were discovered during systematic excavations in a cave in the Republic of Georgia.

The flax, which would have been collected from the wild and not farmed, could have been used to make linen and thread, according to the researchers.

The cloth and thread would then have been used to fashion garments for warmth, sew leather pieces, make cloths, or tie together packs that might have aided the mobility of our ancient ancestors from one camp to another.

“This was a critical invention for early humans. They might have used this fiber to create parts of clothing, ropes, or baskets-for items that were mainly used for domestic activities,” said Ofer Bar-Yosef of the Harvard University, who jointly led the research with George Grant MacCurdy and Janet G. B. MacCurdy.

“We know that this is wild flax that grew in the vicinity of the cave and was exploited intensively or extensively by modern humans,” he added.

The items created with these fibers increased early humans chances of survival and mobility in the harsh conditions of this hilly region.

The flax fibers could have been used to sew hides together for clothing and shoes, to create the warmth necessary to endure cold weather.

They might have also been used to make packs for carrying essentials, which would have increased and eased mobility, offering a great advantage to a hunter-gatherer society.

Some of the fibers were twisted, indicating they were used to make ropes or strings. Others had been dyed.

Early humans used the plants in the area to color the fabric or threads made from the flax.

Today, these fibers are not visible to the eye, because the garments and items sewed together with the flax have long ago disintegrated.

Bar-Yosef, Eliso Kvavadze of the Institute of Paleobiology, and colleagues, discovered the fibers by examining samples of clay retrieved from different layers of the cave under a microscope.

Bar-Yosef and his team used radiocarbon dating to date the layers of the cave as they dug the site, revealing the age of the clay samples in which the fibers were found.

Flax fibers were also found in the layers that dated to about 21,000 and 13,000 years ago. (ANI)

Gorilla-like creature resembling ‘Bigfoot’ photographed in Kentucky backyard

London, September 10 (ANI): A gorilla-like creature that resembles the mythical creature ‘Bigfoot’ is causing excitement on the web after being photographed in the back garden of a home in Kentucky in the US.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the large, hairy beast can be seen in a blurry picture taken on an automatic camera set up by an amateur hunter.

While flicking through images of rabbits and deer, Kenny Mahoney noticed a dark, humanoid creature that does not look like any of the southern US state’s known native species.

The mystery animal’s head appears too small for it to be a bear, leaving Mahoney wondering whether he had accidentally captured one of the clearest ever photos of Bigfoot.

“It looked like it had the outline of a head, and like gorilla type shoulders, and then the arms crossed is what it looks like to me,” said Mahoney.

“One of the explanations my brother-in-law said it may be a garbage bag blowed up in there, but all the smashed over vegetation in there – I really don’t know. I have no idea what it is,” he added.

Mahoney said he is very doubtful that the creature in the photo is Bigfoot.

His wife Margaret has sent the image to a wildlife expert in the hope of getting it identified.

The mythical ape-like creature Bigfoot is most regularly sighted in the forests in the northwestern states and provinces of North America, although last month a teenage girl in Poland reported seeing a similar beast.

Last year, two men in the US state of Georgia claimed to have discovered a body of Bigfoot, but subsequently confessed that photos they produced as “proof” of their find actually showed a rubber ape costume. (ANI)

Indoor plants could be injurious to health

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Potted plants might add a certain aesthetic value to your house, but they are likely to have adverse health effects, suggests a new study.

The research team headed by Stanley J. Kays of the University of Georgia’s Department of Horticulture has shown that these indoor plants actually release volatile organic compounds into the environment.

During the study, they identified and measured the amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by four popular indoor potted plant species Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Weeping Fig and Areca Palm.

Samples of each plant were placed in glass containers with inlet ports connected to charcoal filters to supply purified air and outlet ports connected to traps where volatile emissions were measured.

A total of 23 volatile compounds were found in Peace Lily, 16 in Areca Palm, 13 in Weeping Fig, and 12 in Snake Plant. Some of the VOCs are ingredients in pesticides applied to several species during the production phase.

Other VOCs released did not come from the plant itself, but rather the micro-organisms living in the soil.

“Although micro-organisms in the media have been shown to be important in the removal of volatile air pollutants, they also release volatiles into the atmosphere”, said Kays.

Furthermore, 11 of the VOCs came from the plastic pots containing the plants. Several of these VOCs are known to negatively affect animals.

Interestingly, VOC emission rates were higher during the day than at night in all of the species, and all classes of emissions were higher in the day than at night.

The study concluded, “while ornamental plants are known to remove certain VOCs, they also emit a variety of VOCs, some of which are known to be biologically active.

“The longevity of these compounds has not been adequately studied, and the impact of these compounds on humans is unknown.”

The study is published in the American Society for Horticultural Science journal HortScience. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus stalker allegedly threatens to return to ‘finish things’

London, Aug 26 (ANI): ‘Hannah Montana’ star Miley Cyrus’ stalker allegedly threatened to return to her movie set to “finish things” off.

Mark McLeod was remanded in custody after a judge ruled he was potentially dangerous, and there was enough evidence to send the case to trial, reports Sky News.

Cyrus’ security guard revealed that McLeod, arrested earlier this month after trying to contact the star while on a film set on Tybee Island, on Georgia’s coast, had confided to police that he planned to return.

But Municipal Court Judge Steven Scheer said that he felt McLeod had no chance of getting to the 16-year-old singer “because she can afford the best protection money can buy.”

Though he did say that he feared McLeod might be a threat to others, even if he is not a threat to Cyrus.

Painless ‘microneedle’ patch may end jab fear

Washington, Aug 20 (ANI): Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed a painless patch that may someday make hypodermic needles as well as annual flu shots a thing of the past.

These patches, lined with tiny ‘microneedles,’ could make treatment of diabetes and a wide range of other diseases safer, more effective and less painful, according to the researchers.

Used as tiny hypodermic needles, they could improve treatment of macular degeneration and other diseases of the eye.

“It’s our goal to get rid of the need for hypodermic needles in many cases and replace them with a patch that can be painlessly and simply applied by a patient,” said Mark Prausnitz from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“If you can move to something that’s as easy to apply as a band-aid, you’ve now opened the door for people to self-administer their medicine without special training,” he added.

Prausnitz said that advances in the electronics industry in microfabricating very small objects like transistors enabled the development of microneedles.

“We’ve built off those technological advances to address a need in medicine. We’re trying to bring the two worlds together,” he said.

Each needle is only a few hundred microns long, about the width of a few strands of human hair.

Prausnitz and his colleagues suggest that the microneedle patch could, for instance, replace yearly trips to the doctor for flu shots.

In a collaboration with Emory University, Prausnitz and his team administered flu vaccines via conventional injections and microneedle patches in mice.

After exposing the mice to the flu, they compared the resulting immune response and antibody levels. They found that the antibody levels were the same by either route.

Taking a closer look, they discovered that microneedle delivery resulted in a better protective immune response by other measures.

“Toward the goal of a flu vaccine patch, we are continuing the animal studies, but we’re also working toward our first human trial, which we hope to do in 2010,” Prausnitz said.

Microneedles are not just able to deliver drugs through the skin they can also be used for targeted drug delivery in the eye.

They may help create an improved treatment for macular degeneration.

The study has been presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. (ANI)

Fat people ‘more likely to die of swine flu’

London, July 16 (ANI): Here’s some bad news for fat folks: Overweight people are more likely to die of swine flu, says a new US study.

According to unpublished figures, which were reported at a recent meeting of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, 99 people who died in the early stages of the pandemic in the US, 45 per cent were obese.

Up till now, most of the individuals who have died from H1N1 swine flu have had an underlying health problem which weakened their ability to fend off the virus, reports New Scientist.

Among the conditions recognised as increasing the risk from flu are hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung obstruction and coronary disease. Now it may be time to add obesity to the list.

The figures surprised most flu researchers.

“In 40 years of studying flu, I have never heard anything about obesity,” says virologist John Oxford of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London. (ANI)

Your cars may soon be powered by urine

New York, July 15 (ANI): Could it be possible to run your car on urine? Well, it may be, if Ohio University scientists are to be believed.

And their confidence stems from the fact that they have found a novel way to produce hydrogen energy from urine.

According to Discovery News, the scientists used a nickel-based electrode to make cheap hydrogen from urine.

When the research team led by professor Gerardine Botte stuck the electrode into a pool of urine, and applied an electrical current, hydrogen gas was released, which was used in fuel cells.

The prototype is about three inches by three inches, and is capable of generating 500 milliwatts of power.

The scientists hope to create commercial versions of the technology.

Botte expects that the fuel-cell urine-powered car could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon.

“One cow can provide enough energy to supply hot water for 19 houses. Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

The researchers focussed their study on urea, a urine by-product.

“Urea is a byproduct of a lot of cities and farms, but even if you take all the people and all the animals, there’s not enough to run the world,” said University of Georgia professor John Stickney.

He added that though applications using urine won’t be available to consumers for quite some time, it’s definitely worth developing.

“We are going to have to put together a lot of greener ways to collect energy that don’t produce greenhouse gases and don’t require us to go to war,” he added. (ANI)

Indian students stand second in non-US division of NASA supersonic design contest

Washington, July 11 (ANI): Sahaj Panchal and Dhrumir Patel from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology, Gujarat, India, have stood second in the category of ‘non-US team’ in a contest to design a supersonic airliner, hosted by NASA.

The contest saw college students from the US, Japan and India, who researched technology and created concepts for a supersonic passenger jet.

The Fundamental Aeronautics Program in NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate sponsored the competition.

The participants were challenged to design a small supersonic airliner and submit a research paper limited to 25 pages.

Designs had to be efficient, environmentally friendly, low sonic boom commercial aircraft that could be ready for initial service by 2020.

A team of undergraduates from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a team of graduate students from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta tied for first place in the US division.

A University of Tokyo undergraduate team won top honors in the non-US category, with Panchal and Patel from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology, standing second for their design called ‘RASTOFUST’.

A group of NASA engineers reviewed the entries. The judges based their scores on how well students addressed all aspects of the problem they chose to discuss.

The judges used the following criteria: innovation and creativity; discussion of feasibility; a brief review of pertinent literature; and a baseline comparison with the relevant current technology, system or design.

“We use these competitions to generate excitement for aeronautics and the engineering behind aviation,” said Peter Coen, principal investigator of the Supersonics Project at Langley.

“I was pleased by the number and diversity of the entries we received. And I was impressed by the quality and innovative thinking demonstrated in the designs,” he added. (ANI)

New species of lungless salamander found in Appalachian foothills of the US

London, July 9 (ANI): A striking new species of lungless salamander has been found living in a small stream in the Appalachian foothills of the US.

According to a report by BBC News, the salamander, scientifically known as ‘Urspelerpes brucei’, is so distinct that it’s been classified within its own genus, a taxonomic grouping that usually includes a host of related species.

The creature breathes through its skin, and unusually for its kind, males and females have different colouration.

Such a distinct amphibian has not been found in the US for half a century.

The researchers who discovered the creature have dubbed it the ‘patch-nosed’ salamander after the yellow patch on the animal’s snout.

The tiny animal averages just 25 to 26mm long.

The researchers found so few of the animals that either it is highly secretive, or more likely it survives in such small, isolated numbers that it is already at risk of extinction.

“This animal is really a spectacular find,” said Biologist Carlos Camp of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, who led the team which described the new species.

“It is the first genus of amphibian, indeed of any four-footed vertebrate, discovered in the US in nearly 50 years,” he added.

The Appalachian Highlands of the southeastern US is a hot spot for lungless salamander diversity, with species occupying a variety of moist or wet environments including living in streams, underground, among the leaf litter of the forest floor, up cliffs and in trees.

“The salamander fauna of the US, particularly of the southern Appalachians, has been intensively studied for well over a century, so the discovery of such a distinct form was completely unsuspected,” said Carlos.

The amphibian also looks strikingly different to other species.

For a start, it has the smallest body size of any salamander in the US.

It is also the only lungless salamander in the US whose males have a different colour and pattern than females, a trait more characteristic of birds.

Males have a pair of distinct dark stripes running down the sides of the body and a yellow back. Females lack stripes and are more muted in colour.

Males also have 15 vertebrae, one less than females. Yet while most species of lungless salamander have male and females of differing sizes, those of Urspelerpes brucei are close to being equal in size.

Uniquely for such a small lungless salamander, Urspelerpes brucei has five toes, whereas most other small species have reduced that number to four. (ANI)

Microscopic ‘beads’ may revolutionise organ transplantation

Washington, July 7 (ANI): If Medical College of Georgia researchers are to be believed, organ transplantation in future may include microscopic beads that create “designer” immune cells so that patients may tolerate their new organ.

Dr. Anatolij Horuzsko, reproductive immunologist at the MCG Center for Molecular Chaperone/Radiobiology and Cancer Virology, has already used this approach successfully in mice with skin grafts.

“It’s absolutely natural,” says the researcher.

The degradable microparticles deliver the most powerful known form of HLA-G, a natural suppressor of the immune response, straight to dendritic cells, which typically show the immune system what to attack.

The microparticles are given right after a transplant, just as dendritic cells are giving the immune system a heads up to get busy attacking the new organ.

Dr. Horuzsko says that microparticle therapy likely would be needed for just a few weeks, until the dendritic cells have learned instead to ignore it.

“It’s like a calming effect and once tolerance is established, we don’t need it any more,” he says.

His team compared the success of HLA-G microparticles with the dendritic cell marker to those without a marker, those with were much more efficient at getting where needed and acting.

He says that those without direction likely were consumed by garbage eaters called macrophages.

“We want to create in kidney transplant patients, the same tolerance to the new kidney,” says Dr. Horuzsko, who reckons that HLA-G microparticles could be doing just that within five years.

He presented the patented process along with his other latest HLA-G findings during an opening lecture of the 5th International Conference on HLA-G in Paris, July 6-8.

Dr. Horuzsko believes that marked microparticles also have treatment potential in diseases where the immune system attacks normal tissue, such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

He is currently working in collaboration with Dr. Laura Mulloy, chief of the Section of Nephrology, Hypertension and Transplantation Medicine in the MCG School of Medicine, to find out whether higher natural levels of HLA-G already are giving some transplant patients an edge, by comparing HLA-G expression in those who keep and reject their transplanted kidneys. Swine flu can travel to the lungs and gut

London, July 3 (ANI): The deadly swine flu virus has the potential to reach deep into the respiratory system, and even as far as the intestines, according to two new studies on ferrets.

The above findings could explain why the disease’s symptoms are different from those of seasonal flu.

The studies were conducted by two separate groups that have been using ferrets to investigate how harmful A(H1N1) influenza virus is, and how easily it is transmitted.

One of the studies was led by Terrence Tumpey at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, whose colleagues put droplets of three different swine flu viruses, and one ‘seasonal’ flu virus, into the noses of ferrets.

Some ferrets shared cages with other uninfected ferrets, and some were placed in cages next to other ferrets, sharing nothing but the air they breathed.

It was found that the ferrets with swine flu strains lost more weight than those with normal flu, and that the swine flu reached lower down into the lungs of some of the ferrets than normal seasonal flu, penetrating the intestines in some cases.

This tallies with observations in humans that some patients suffered vomiting and diarrhoea.

In a second study, led by Ron Fouchier at the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, it was found that the virus could penetrate the lungs.

“This is the first indication of how pathogenic [swine flu] really is. In the field that conclusion is hard to draw,” Nature magazine quoted Fouchier as saying.

Ferrets have long been used as an animal model for flu because they show similar symptoms to humans, and tend to last the same amounts of time in both species.

The studies showed that the virus wasn’t transmitted between animals as efficiently as the seasonal flu, but Fouchier’s results indicated that the virus was transmitted just as efficiently as seasonal flu.

New nanotechnology technique may boost longevity of dental fillings

Washington, July 2 (ANI): A novel nanotechnology technique can boost the longevity of dental fillings, claims a Medical College of Georgia (MCG) researcher.

The tooth-coloured fillings are usually more attractive than silver ones, but the bonds between the white filling and the tooth quickly age and degrade.

“Dentin adhesives bond well initially, but then the hybrid layer between the adhesive and the dentin begins to break down in as little as one year. When that happens, the restoration will eventually fail and come off the tooth,” said Dr. Franklin Tay, associate professor of endodontics in the MCG School of Dentistry.

He added: “Our adhesives are not as good as we thought they were, and that causes problems for the bonds.”

To make a bond, a dentist etches away some of the dentin’s minerals with phosphoric acid to expose a network of collagen, known as the hybrid layer.

Acid-etching prepares the tooth for application of an adhesive to the hybrid layer so that the resin can latch on to the collagen network, but the imperfect adhesives leave spaces inside the collagen that are not properly infiltrated with resin, leading to the bonds’ failure.

Thus, in order to prevent the aging and degradation of resin-dentin bonding by feeding minerals back into the collagen network, Tay is investigating guided tissue remineralisation.

Guided tissue remineralisation is a new nanotechnology process of growing extremely small, mineral-rich crystals and guiding them into the demineralised gaps between collagen fibres.

Tay got the idea of the technique by examining how crystals form in nature.

“Eggshells and abalone [sea snail] shells are very strong and intriguing. We’re trying to mimic nature, and we’re learning a lot from observing how small animals make their shells,” said Tay.

The crystals, called hydroxyapatite, bond when proteins and minerals interact.

Tay will use calcium phosphate, a mineral that’s the primary component of dentin, enamel and bone, and two protein analogs also found in dentin so he can mimic nature while controlling the size of each crystal.

“When crystals are formed, they don’t have a definite shape, so they are easily guided into the nooks and crannies of the collagen matrix,” he said.

In theory, the crystals should lock the minerals into the hybrid layer, and prevent it from degrading.

If the concept of guided tissue remineralisation works, Tay will create a delivery system to apply the crystals to the hybrid layer after the acid-etching process.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Dental Association. (ANI)

Soon, wheelchairs controlled by tongues

Washington, July 1(ANI): Scientists have developed a novel headset that makes it possible for a person suffering from spinal cord injury to precisely control a wheelchair or computer using the tongue.

The “tongue drive”, being trialled at Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, could also give astronauts a third hand in difficult situations like spacewalks.

Invented by electrical engineer Maysam Ghovanloo and Xueliang Huo, the device works by using two sensors to track a 5-millimetre-wide magnet attached to the tip of the user’s tongue.

The magnet is attached to a person’s tongue using surgical adhesive.

The sensors – implanted in a wireless headset – accept fluctuations in the strength of the magnetic field as the tongue moves, and transmit the signals on to a computer, where they are interpreted and acted upon.

By moving the tongue in predefined patterns, the user can steer a cursor on a screen, direct a wheelchair, and can even on switch on a TV.

Conventional methods include “sip and puff” devices, which are operated by blowing or sucking on a straw held in front of the mouth.

However, according to the Ghovanloo, tongue-drive system can accept a wider variety of commands.

“Some don’t like their sip and puff because it sits right in front of their face, and is like a signal of their disability,” New Scientist magazine quoted Ghovanloo as saying.

“Our design can be made less conspicuous,” Ghovanloo added.

The researchers say that they are in talks with a dental expert about installing them into a plastic retainer that fits inside the user’s teeth. (ANI)

Macca to perform to save 120-year-old arena Atlanta arena

Washington, June 26 (ANI): Sir Paul McCartney will perform to save a 120-year-old arena in Atlanta, Georgia this summer.

The former Beatle will play at the crumbling Piedmont Park as part of a small U.S. tour, Contactmusic reports.

The singer will perform on 15 August (09) and the funds raised will go to the authorities for the maintenance of the stadium- who have been struggling till now-, which was founded in 1887.

The tour had kicked off with the christening event of the New York Mets’ new Queens stadium. (ANI)

Britain’s fattest teen turns half her former size in nine months flat!

London, June 23 (ANI): Georgia Davis, once dubbed Britain’s fattest teenager, is now half the size she used to be.

The 16-year-old was named fattest teenager in Britain after hitting 33st but she is now 14.6st lighter, courtesy the nine months she spent at a US weight-loss camp.

Davis says when returned home to the UK, her mother couldn’t recognize her.

“I used to look at myself in the mirror and cry. Now I smile and say, ‘Yeah, I like myself’,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I like my face and the way my body is shaped. The world is my oyster and I feel I can achieve anything.

Davis took up two seats as she flew out to North Carolina’s 3,600-pound-a-month Wellspring Academy under a special scholarship.

However, she sat in a single seat on her flight home to Aberdare, South Wales, at her new weight of 18.4st.

‘Chemical nose’ can sniff out cancer

Washington. June 23 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a ‘chemical nose’ that can sniff out cancer.

The revolutionary tool contains an array of nanoparticles and polymers that differentiate not only between healthy and cancerous cells but also between metastatic and non-metastatic cancer cells.

Currently, detecting cancer via cell surface biomarkers has taken what’s known as the “lock and key” approach.

However, this method includes foreknowledge of the biomarker.

“Our new method uses an array of sensors to recognize not only known cancer types, but it signals that abnormal cells are present,” said chemist Vincent Rotello, who conducted the research with cancer specialist Joseph Jerry.

“That is, the chemical nose can simply tell us something isn’t right, like a ‘check engine light,’ though it may never have encountered that type before,” he added.

Further, the chemical nose can be designed to alert doctors of the most invasive cancer types, those for which early treatment is crucial.

The study conducted using four human cancer cell lines (cervical, liver, testis and breast), as well as in three metastatic breast cell lines, and in normal cells showed that the new detection technique correctly indicated not only the presence of cancer cells in a sample but also identified primary cancer vs. metastatic disease.

Rotello’s research team, with colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology, designed the new detection system by combining three gold nanoparticles that have special affinity for the surface of chemically abnormal cells, plus a polymer known as PPE, or para-phenyleneethynylene.

As the ‘check engine light,’ PPE fluoresces or glows when displaced from the nanoparticle surface.

New interferon response could offer early control of bird flu virus

Washington, June 20 (ANI): The cell-signalling protein, interferon type 1, has the potential to reduce H5N1 influenza virus’ (bird flu virus) replication in mice, and can thus offer protection in the early stages of infection, according to researchers from Georgia.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses increasingly pose a serious public health risk, as cases of interspecies transmission from birds to humans continue to rise.

While not much is known about the pathogenic mechanisms of H5N1 influenza viruses, prior research has suggested that their ability to evade innate immune responses within the host, such as the type 1 interferon (IFN-a/B) response, contributes to virulence in mammals.

In the study, they used a mouse model to analyse the role of type 1 interferons in IFN a/ receptor-deficient and wild-type mice challenged with two avian influenza A viruses isolated from humans (HK/483 and HK/486).

The two viruses generally exhibit high and low lethality in mice.

The findings revealed that INF-a/ß receptor-deficient mice lost significantly more weight, and were faster to succumb to death than wild-type mice.

Both the HK/483 and H/K 486 virus caused a similar systemic infection in INF-a/ß receptor-deficient mice.

However, pre-treatment with IFN-a/ß significantly reduced replication of both viruses.

“These results suggest a role for the IFN-a/ß response in the control of H5N1 virus replication both in vivo and in vitro, and as such it may provide some degree of protection to the host in the early stages of infection,” said the researchers.

The findings of the study have been reported in the Journal of Virology. (ANI)
