Court bars Fernandes wife, son from flying him to US

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Tuesday restrained the wife and son of veteran socialist leader and former defence minister George Fernandes from taking him to the US for medical treatment.

Justice V.K. Shali restrained Fernandes’ wife Leila Kabir and their son Sean from taking the leader to the US for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

The court rejected the argument of Leila Kabir’s counsel that in view of Fernandes health, he was required to be taken to the US.

The matter will be further heard on April 26.

The high court was hearing the plea of Richard Fernandes, brother of George Fernandes, who alleged that they could not meet the leader as he was in the confinement of his wife and son.

According to the petition, Kabir and Sean returned to George Fernandes’ life after two decades, saying that his friends and brothers want to grab his property worth over Rs.250 million.

Fernandes, 79, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, was under ayurvedic medication at the Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar till date.

‘Kabir and Fernandes had forcibly taken Fernandes to an undisclosed location on the pretext of giving him medical care,’ the petition states.

Recollections of a communicator; George Fernandes was a pioneer economy traveler(Article)

New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): Much has been written during the last one week about the directions by the Government of India to the Ministers and Congress Members of Parliament to travel economy class during their tour within the country or abroad.

Much also has been made about the ‘directions’ communicated to the Minister of External Affairs S.M. Krishna and Minister of State Shashi Tharoor to shift from their rooms in five star hotels even though they were paying for the rental personally.

The Cabinet Minister who refused to travel first class out of conviction was George Fernandes, the former Minister for Defence. I witnessed it as Information Consultant in the Defence Ministry. In fact it caused me some embarrassment, as I was booked in the Indian Airlines flight in the first class which was my entitlement and to my surprise I saw the Defence Minister, George Fernandes traveling in the economic class during the flight from Delhi to Mumbai.

I quietly went to a person traveling in the economy class to take my seat in the first class and traveled in the economy class. Later, whenever I traveled with George Fernandes I took care to ensure that my booking was done in the economy class.

Last week, I heard the Congress Spokesperson Manish Tewari saying that he was ready to travel even in the cargo compartment.

I recalled that I had to travel in the cargo compartment of a IL-76 of the Indian Air Force from Gauhati to Delhi in 2004 along with George Fernandes. The plane was not pressurized and not one word could be heard by me during the two-hour long flight though I was in the bucket seat along with the Defence Minister.

George Fernandes had visited Tawang a day earlier, saw the monastery and war memorial there, did a survey of the posts keeping a watch on the Chinese border. On return when we were told that the Indian Airlines flight was cancelled, he chose to travel by the IL 76 cargo aircraft, which was on a routine flight, as he had to proceed on an engagement from Delhi.

Incidentally, during his period as Defence Minister, George Fernandes chose to visit Siachen Glacier to see how the Jawans were living there. When he saw that they were not adequately clothed as there were some ‘budgetary problems’, he told the Defence Ministry that the officers concerned should pay a visit to the outposts in Siachen.

In no time, the Jawans got their clothes and snowmobiles in Siachen. From then onwards George Fernandes visited Siachen every three months, as the turnover period there used to be three months and he wanted to meet every contingent who were doing a tenure of duty there. He had visited Siachen 18 times as Defence Minister.

He was insistent on personally going through the conditions in which the soldiers, sailors and airmen lived and worked. He travelled in a Light Combat Aircraft being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after subjecting himself to the physical tests that every pilot has to pass through.

It is also not the first time that Cabinet Ministers have been staying in five-star hotels. I recall a former Prime Minister booking scores of rooms in the Maurya to accommodate his family who had come along with him when he was sworn in. They stayed there for weeks and special food was prepared for them to see that they felt at home.

Today the Jumna is in spate. So also the Government departments. One recalls the days when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister. He had an office in South Block with two personal secretaries who took all the dictations and maintained his office. Today, the number of personal secretaries working for a Cabinet Minister is around a score, leave alone the Prime Minister’s Office.

And Home Minister Chidambaram is struggling to persuade his colleagues and senior political leaders to reduce the number of ‘guards’ deployed to ‘protect’ them. His personal example not to have the guards has hardly been emulated by others.

George Fernandes demands apology from Congress party

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Former Defence Minister George Fernandes demanded an apology from the Congress Party, as his name was not figuring in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charge sheet in the coffin scam.

Congress, which was an opposition party in 2002, severely criticised Fernandes as having role in the Coffin Scam, and even boycotted him in the Parliament.

In a signed press statement Fernandes accused Congress for demoralising the troops to gain the political advantage.

“I needed no ‘clean chit’ from the CBI to know that the aluminium casket purchase issue had never even come to my table during my tenure as Defence Minister let alone my drinking the blood of martyrs, as the Congress accused me of doing,” Fernandes stated.

The CBI, which filed a charge sheet of the scam on August 19, did not include Fernandes’s name.

The charge sheet named the then military attachi in the Indian Embassy in the US, Major General (Retd) Arun Roy, Col (Retd) S K Malik, Col S D Singh and US based businessman Victor Baiza.

The NDA Government’s decision to purchase steel body bays to bring back the bodies if the martyrs of Kargil conflict had racked the nation during the summer of 1999.

The Comptroller and auditor General also found a lot of flaws in the procurement of caskets.

The UPA government, which assumed power in 2004, ordered probe against all the deals signed during the NDA regime. (ANI)

Election defeat does not deter Fernandes, ready for many more battles

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Former Defence Minister and Janata Dal (United) party founder George Fernandes, who has been known for his resilience throughout his political journey, says that in battles, a loss does not matter and it was the fight itself that has always been more important for him.

Fernandes, who contested in the recent parliamentary elections as an independent from Muzaffarpur, says his defeat does not deter him for from continuing to fight against, corruption, poverty and all forms of injustice to build a more transparent, compassionate and equal society, where the self if forgotten and the country comes first.

Writing in the latest issue of the ‘Other Side”, he says, “There are many battles that still remain to be fought.”

Janata Dal (U) party did not give him a ticket and says many of his old colleagues, whom he had nurtured, did not support him. George Fernandes says he received ‘tremendous love and support’ from the people of Muzaffarpur during the campaign. There were large crowds who attended the meetings.

But, as he did not have a strong party machinery “the overwhelming affection of people in village after village did not translate into votes.”

While complimenting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the creditable performance of the JD (U) in the elections, he forewarned him against ‘continuing arrogance’ towards stalwart socialist colleagues in Bihar.

“Bihar’s JD (U) gave a creditable election result. However, Nitish Kumar should be forewarned that his continuing arrogance towards stalwart socialist colleagues in Bihar and his recent back-door machinations with the Congress will result in a Congress revival in Bihar sooner rather than later. His victory was more due to the people’s desire to keep Lalu Prasad Yadav away than any great lead in development as is made out,” Fernandes stated.

Fernandes writes that his long-standing relationship with the people of Bihar, particularly with the people of Muzaffarpur and Nalanda nurtured over the past many years, would continue.

“My doors will always be open for them and for all those who are needy and seeking justice, from all over the country. I would like to believe that those currently in power in Bihar and at the centre will deal fairly and expeditiously with any problems of the people that I may raise with them as I have done for the past 50 years”, Fernandes wrote in his column in “The Other side.”

Fernandes accepts the election result with no regrets because his fights have always been for democratic values and for the causes of the poor and underprivileged.

“I don’t see it as my loss. This time it was also a fight for the right values, which should be practised by those whom I helped to attain power in Bihar. I do not believe they are wiling to improve yet. It may take some more time for them to learn that real power remains only when politics is backed with moral character, courage, and democratic functioning,” he states.

George Fernandes promises to remain active to fight corruption, poverty and all forms of injustice. “There are many battles that still remain to be fought,” he concludes. (ANI)

Forget Gen Next mumbo jumbo, care for the aged: Fernandes

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Former Janata Dal (United) leader George Fernandes, who recently contested and lost the general elections as an independent from Muzaffarpur constituency in Bihar, has said there is an urgent need to care for the aged, as this has been apart of Indian culture and humanity.

In article for the socialist journal “The Other Side”, Fernandes, a former Defence and Railway Minister and convener of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA), said: “We must desist from media-driven infatuation with the youth and silly words like Gen-Next, and think about those who have spent their lives caring for their families and inculcating in them value systems in tune with our culture and the needs of humanity.”

He expressed particular concern for aged persons of economically deprived families who have undergone both pain and struggle in bringing up their children. They need and deserve better care from society, he writes.

Praising BJP leader Vijay Goel for providing senior citizens with support systems, Fernandes said care should begin at home, where most difficulties originate.

“We need more pressure in terms of demands from the public and generous financial support to compel existing old-age homes, as well as those coming up in the future, to specifically welcome those who are not physically active or mentally alert,” said Fernandes.

“Elders should not be shut away as an embarrassment since this will inculcate cruel and selfish tendencies in the next generation,” the veteran politician concluded. (ANI)

Munnabhai, Nafisa no icons of socialism, says Fernandes

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and former national women’s swimming champion Nafisa Ali are, by no stretch of imagination, socialists, and it is a shame that the Samajwadi Party, which is led by Mulayam Singh Yadav, is projecting both as icons of socialism, says veteran politician George Fernandes.

“The biggest shame is to see the likes of socialites or film stars like Nafisa Ali or Sanjay Dutt sporting the red topi of the socialist working class movement like a fashion accessory just because they are campaigning for the Samajwadi Party. It is indeed sad that Mulayam Singh Yadav allows such mockery to take place under his Samajwadi banner,” says Fernandes in an article for the socialist journal “The Other Side”.

Appealing for genuine socialists to get together to promote the politics of integrity and ideology, Fernandes says practicing politicians must take the lead and adds that senior leaders of the socialist movement can inspire through their past legacies and moral character.

“There is hardly any room left for brilliant oratory… and some like Nafisa Ali and Mallika Sarabhai thought their media ilan and glamour could replace the (socialist) system by becoming candidates. The media must stop acting as if they are solely in charge of the political discourse of the country,” he adds.

He concludes with a warning that apathy and arrogance only breeds more of the same rubbish that the current crop of leaders often rail against. (ANI)

‘Conspiratorial group preventing me from fighting polls,’ says Fernandes

New Delhi, Apr.21 (ANI): Veteran socialist leader and erstwhile president of the Janata Dal (United), George Fernandes, has complained bitterly about the incumbent party leadership for sidelining him and preventing him from voicing concerns about issues pertaining to Bihar in particular, and the nation overall.

In an article appearing in “The Other Side”, a journal of socialist thought and action, Fernandes says: “I was removed by a conspiratorial group in a broad attack against inner party democracy. The Chief Minister (of Bihar) (Nitish Kumar) continues to address me as the party’s guardian, but does not communicate with me at all.”

Fernandes, who has won nine Lok Sabha elections, is contesting in Muzaffarpur as an Independent, despite being the convener of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance.

Denied a ticket by the Janata Dal (United) on health grounds, the party’s leaders Sharad Yadav and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar have refused to heed the BJP’s pleas that Fernandes be accommodated.

By contesting in Muzaffarpur, Fernandes is waging a political battle against Kumar and his acolytes.

“I’m the NDA convener and I’ve been denied a ticket. Mr. Kumar is an autocrat,” Fernandes says.

Fernandes’ insult has become a political issue. The JD (U)’s leaders don’t refer to him at all and the party is on the back foot on this issue not only in the constituency, but across Bihar as well.

Last Friday, JD (U) chief Sharad Yadav was heckled at a meeting in Aurai in Muzaffarpur for wanting to address the gathering seated in a chair on account of back pain.

The crowd questioned his action in denying ticket to Fernandes when he himself felt “unfit.”

People in the crowd engaged Yadav in a heated exchange of words.

What does Fernandes have to say to all this?

“I have been raising issues of national importance as well as those pertaining to Bihar. We raised the issue of one rank, one pension scheme (for the armed forces), the return of Indian money in Swiss accounts, relief for the unorganized sector, and wages for imams and matters of morality in politics. I was one among the few to have taken up the issue of harassment meted to workers from Bihar and UP with Raj Thackeray in February 2008,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes further goes on to say that when party leaders sought his resignation, he willingly agreed and signed the resignation letter, but advised that the party’s Rajya Sabha members should also resign. It was then that conspiracy of the “power hungry leaders was unraveled,” he said.

He said that this year JD (U) president Sharad Yadav visited him at his residence and told him he could contest from any seat that he wished, including Muzaffarpur. Chief Minister Kumar also phoned to say that he would accompany him (Fernandes) during the filing of nomination.

“Suddenly, I received a letter from the party president rejecting my candidature for election. A massive propaganda offensive was launched highlighting the status of my health. Most of the people, who are showing their utmost concern for my wellbeing, don’t have the courtesy to pay a visit to me. The conspiratorial group put up another name as the official candidate from this (Muzaffarpur) Lok Sabha seat. This man is a known party hopper and is as old as I am. It is such politics of Bihar that is getting terminally ill,” claimed Fernandes.

He says in his article that he decided to contest the polls due to popular demand.

“I have to submit to the popular will. In a democracy, the vox populi has primacy… Age cannot be the sole criterion to amputee wisdom from people’s causes. In our tradition, the older generation is considered to be the epitome of wisdom, but these conspiratorial leaders do not concern themselves with high principles. They believe in destroying the moral foundations of politics,” says Fernandes.

He concludes by saying that he decided to contest because a ” sick polity is in need of healthy political thought and action”.

The people of Muzaffarpur, he says, are strong enough to “destroy every form of dictatorship”. (ANI)

George Fernandes expelled from JD (U)

PATNA: Bihar chief minister and Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar on Friday announced veteran socialist leader George Fernandes, who filed his
nomination papers from Muzaffarpur constituency in Bihar as an Independent candidate, was no more in the party and has been expelled from it.

He said that Fernandes’ decision to defy the party by contesting elections as an Independent automatically led to his expulsion from the party. “The JD (U) has no relation with Fernandes or any one who is contesting elections against the party’s decision,” Nitish Kumar said.

“After Fernandes decided to contest election as an Independent, he is no more in the JD(U)… the party has nothing to do with him,” Nitish Kumar said at a press meet, called to announce the entry of two sitting Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs into the JD(U).

The official JD(U) candidate from Muzaffarpur, Jai Prakash Nishad is facing revolt from within the party while workers of the JD(U)’s alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have announced they would not support him.

Now Fernandes’ statements and his activities should not be linked with the JD (U) because the party has no connection or relation with him, the chief minister reiterated.

Sources in the party office here told that Fernandes’ photographs in the JD (U) office had also been removed after Nitish Kumar’s outburst.

Fernandes, who had been denied a party ticket for the 2009 poll on grounds of his “advancing years and failing health”, had Wednesday filed his nomination papers from Muzaffarpur as an Independent.

Without naming anybody in the JD (U), he said some people were spreading rumours that he was not well and cannot contest elections. “It is a big lie, I am healthy,” he said.

He was accompanied by JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh, former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra, former MP Ram Jeevan Singh and dozens of socialist leaders, besides hundreds of his supporters.

Digvijay Singh was unhappy with JD (U) leadership after being denied a party ticket to contest from Banka seat while Mishra quit the party to protest that no one from the Brahmin community was given a ticket to contest the poll.

Hajipur will go to the polls on April 23 in the second phase of the three-phased elections in Bihar.

RJD-LJP will contest all Bihar seats: Lalu Prasad

New Delhi, Mar 22 (ANI): The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Sunday declared that his party and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) would contest all Lok Sabha seats in Bihar in upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“We have taken a decision that in the constituency of Aurangabad, Sasaram and Madhubani, which were left for the Congress earlier, we will be fielding our candidates,” Prasad told reporters in a press conference here.

Meanwhile, Ram Vilas Paswan said that his party was very much a part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and his recent alliance with the RJD would play an important role to strengthen the alliance.

“The LJP in Bihar will strengthen the UPA and our alliance with the RJD will come out as a strong force,” Paswan added.

At the same time, Janata Dal- United (JDU) chief Sharad Yadav has justified his decision of denying ticket to the veteran leader and former Union Minister George Fernandes.

“We would never want to deny ticket to a leader like George Fernandes, but in general elections there are 15 lakh voters. We are not lacking in giving respect to him but in such ill health, he is not fit to fight elections,’ Sharad Yadav added.

India will hold the general elections between April 16 and May 13, in which 714 million people will cast their votes. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party says it was approached by BJP for electoral tie-up

Lucknow, Feb 19 (ANI): The Samajwadi Party (SP) has said it had received an offer of an electoral alliance from the opposition BJP-led NDA alliance.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters here on Wednesday that NDA convenor, George Fernandes had broached the idea of a tie-up while they were dining with BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Yadav said his response was that the BJP should drop its main poll plank of building a temple dedicated to Lord Ram at the site of a razed 16th century mosque.

“George came to me, and I told him all the four things. First demand was to drop the issue of Ayodhya, leave out your opposition to Article 370, and third thing was to change views about Muslims. Atal said that if we will leave these issues then what would be left with us?” Yadav said.

Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, said that he would implement ‘Gandhigiri’ in politics, a theme which gave him prominence in the film ‘Munnabhai MBBS.’

Dutt started his pre-poll campaign as a SP candidate ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

“I think, ‘Gandhigiri’ is a very important factor. I think I’ll implement it in politics,” said Dutt.

Asked whether he would have time to devote for his constituency as he is based in Mumbai, Dutt said he would follow in the footsteps of his father, who spent a lot of time with and for his followers.

“My family is known for commitment. I will devote time for Lucknow. My father Sunil Dutt has done a lot for his constituency. I am his son and will do all that what I have learnt from him,” said Dutt.

The Samajwadi Party is an ally of the Congress party, but the two parties have differences on seat sharing in Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)

Mangle the non-Mangalorean Sri Ram Sene

New Delhi, Jan.29 (ANI): Where are the famous Mangaloreans who brandish their origins at the drop of a hat? Why are they not speaking up for the protection of the secular and liberal culture of this beautiful port city?

Aishwarya Rai (films), Vijay Mallya (industrialist), Suneil Shetty (films), Margaret Alva (politician), George Fernandes (politician), Veerappa Moily (politician), Oscar Fernandes (politician), Veerendra Hegde (Dharmadhikari of the Dharmasthala temple) Shilpa Shetty (actress?) Maxwell Pereira (super cop) and Arvind Adiga (Booker prize) speak up for your city.

This is not the Mangalore that I grew up in…the city where I spent my summers at the homes of aunts and grandparents, visited restaurants and temples, wearing whatever I pleased. Nobody stopped me. Not even the Shankaracharya of the Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri.

The Peetham is the first and foremost of the four Peethams established by the renowned 8th century philosopher saint Sri Adi Shankara. This was in 1980, and women were safe in Mangalore. At the Sringeri Math, women only wore saris when they sought the darshan of the Shankaracharya. Rebellious me decided to wear a salwar kameez. I didn’t think I was insulting anybody after all, the men were topless! The Swamiji looked at me and asked me very politely in Kannada if I was a north Indian. I replied in chaste Kannada that I was a Kannadiga, but lived in the north. He nodded, smiled and said, “that explains your choice of attire.”

I am so glad that in my teen years I only met with the erudite 35th Shankaracharya who embodied what the culture of coastal Karnataka is all about….inclusive, tolerant and respectful of all cultures.

Thankfully Pramod Muthalik hadn’t yet formed his Sri Ram Sene. This Marathi-speaking non-Mangalorean, non-Kannadiga from Belgaum was still not sure where his political fortunes lay. He was still trying out his luck with the Shiv Sena, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal, RSS, Rashtriya Hindustan Sena or this new and blasphemous Ram Sene. And during this time, he was also reportedly Nathuram Godse’s fan! What an endearing personality!

A part of Mangalore is called Kudla in Tulu (a language spoken in many parts of coastal Karnataka), which literally means junction. The city is situated at the meeting point of rivers Netravati and Phalguni. But figuratively, it is also the junction of various religions and cultures like Hinduism, Jainism, Islam and Christianity.

Mangalore finds mention in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It was also in the travel itinerary of Greek, Persian and Portuguese sailors even before the 14th century. Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Hoysalas ruled it. And then, there was Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Mangaloreans are proud of their inclusive and open culture.

The city has a male literacy rate of 90 percent and a female literacy rate of 80 percent. Do Muthalik and his goondas seriously believe that the educated women of this city need his ‘protection’? No thank you. Keep your lathis inside your shakhas. Keep your narrow mindsets inside your darkened walls. By Smita Prakash (ANI)
