Electrolux Turns Ocean Garbage Into New Vacuums

Electrolux is raising awareness of plastic waste in the oceans by putting plastic collected from waters around the world in peoples’ homes.

The maker of various home appliances is creating a limited number of vacuums made with plastic gathered from oceans and seas, through its Vac From The Sea initiative, to bring attention to how much plastic is ending up in floating around in marine environments and harming animals.

Not only does plastic that is in oceans kill birds and other creatures, but plastic out in the sea breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces over time, bringing with it worries that as fish and other animals eat the bits of plastic, that trash works its way back up the food chain until it ends up on our plates.

The issue of plastic waste in the ocean has now been documented and tracked by a number of groups and awareness initiatives, like 5Gyres and the Plastiki expedition, but this is the first time a company has fused that issue with its products.

Along with awareness of plastic in the ocean, Electrolux is using the campaign to note that the supply of recycled plastic on land is much lower than the demand, noting that is that plastic staying out of the waters, it would more easily find its way into recycled-content consumer products.

Recycling: cigarette butts may help prevent steel corrosion

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Cigarette butts, termed as “one of the most widespread forms of garbage in the world, ” may find practical use as a new way to prevent steel corrosion, claim scientists.

In the study, boffins describe discovery of a way to reuse the remains of cigarettes to prevent steel corrosion that costs oil producers millions of dollars annually.

It appears in ACS” Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, a bi-weekly journal.

Jun Zhao and colleagues cite one estimate that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts find their way into the environment each year. Studies show that cigarette butts are more than an eyesore. They contain toxins that can kill fish and harm the environment in other ways. Recycling could solve those problems, but finding practical uses for cigarette butts has been difficult.

The scientists showed that extracts of cigarette butts in water, applied to a type of steel (N80) widely used in the oil industry, protected the steel from rusting even under the harsh conditions, preventing costly damage and interruptions in oil production.

They identified nine chemicals in the extracts, including nicotine, which appear to be responsible for this anti-corrosion effect. (ANI)

Locust swarm inspires new pizza topping Down Under

Melbourne, April 19 (ANI): Locust swarms sweeping across northern Victoria are becoming a problem for most, but some entrepreneurs are earning a lot from the insects, with one even using them as pizza topping.

The idea to use locust as pizza topping had been introduced by Mayor Glenn Milne, who rounded up the insects and trapped them in a garbage bag.

“You can’t stop finding them when they get killed on your car, but it’s another story when you get out on the oval and try to catch them,” ABC News quoted him as saying.

Authorities say the swarms are among the biggest seen in northern Victoria in 30 years.

In the Mallee, the insects are plastered across the front of vehicles, which are forced to drive through locust clouds, and Mildura car wash operator Jeff Becker says his business has quadrupled as motorists try to keep their windscreens clean.

“The bugs don’t care, they’ll just get on your car,” he said.

“Doesn’t matter who you are, what you drive,” he explained.

But the swarms are not such good news for farmers as they are feasting on early-sown crops.

The pests are also causing problems for footballers, lawn bowlers and golfers who have to play on through clouds of locusts attacking any grassed playing surface. (ANI)

Female HMAS Success sailors ‘grabbed and threatened’

A Defence inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct on board HMAS Success has been told a group of senior sailors believed they were untouchable.

A commission of inquiry is underway in Sydney into claims young female sailors on board HMAS Success were pressured into having sex.

The ship’s former deputy commander Donna Muller has told the inquiry today that a woman was sexually assaulted and a pair engaged in a public sex act.

Commander Muller said she had been told a junior sailor later grabbed two women around their throats and threatened them against speaking out.

She said as problems escalated, the ship felt so unsafe she was uneasy walking around on deck.

Commander Muller also said there was a drinking culture on board from the start of the voyage.

She told the inquiry how a KFC bucket was found in the garbage containing syringes, steroid packets and bags with powder residue inside.

Four male sailors were later removed from HMAS Success.

Art of Living volunteers team up to clean river Yamuna

New Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): The Art of Living volunteers came together on Wednesday to clean the banks and clear the flow of the water of river Yamuna, claiming to be highly inspired by Spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

This cleanliness drive is part of a campaign that was mooted and launched by renowned Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to spread awareness and sensitize people on the deteriorating condition of riverYamuna.

Hindus by and large revere every source of water as holy and river Yamuna is one among them.

River Yamuna, once teeming with life, is these days reduced to a garbage dumping spot.
Foul smell emanating from the dark coloured waters, polluted with plastic, cartons, clothes, shoes and other garbage, are all evidence of the ordeal Yamuna has undergone over the years.

The cleanliness drive of the eight Yamuna banks, undertaken by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and his organization named The Art of Living in New Delhi is aimed at pressurising the government to act speedily on cleaning up the river.

“All of us have gathered here by inspiration of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar with an aim of restoring the purity and cleanliness of River Yamuna. That”s why all of us are here to clean the river,” said S S Bali, a volunteer from The Art of Living.

According to reports, around 18 major sewage canals empty into the river, depleting it of oxygen.

The pollution levels have risen so much that the authorities here have declared the water unfit for drinking even for animals. (ANI)

Volunteers launch Delhi clean drive ahead of Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, Mar. 20 (ANI): As Delhi gears up to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games later this year, hundreds of volunteers have joined hands with the officials of civic bodies to take on the task of cleaning the city.

As part of a campaign called, Let”s Do It Delhi, volunteers swept the streets and collected garbage outside Bhikaji Cama Place in South Delhi, to reflect the message that if they can clean Bhikaji Cama in three hours and keep it clean, why not the whole of Delhi.

The campaign is aimed at educating people about the need to keep the city clean as it prepares to host the mega sports event in October.

Professionals, students and senior citizens pitched in with contributions for the initiative.

“School children, senior citizens and professionals, all have come here and supported the cause to make it successful,” said Monika Bhatia, a volunteer.

They say that public participation is very important to make the campaign successful.

“If the public supports us then we can definitely clean Delhi. Without public”s participation, we cannot clean Delhi,” said Air Commodore S K Meda, a volunteer.

The 19th Commonwealth Games, to be staged in New Delhi between 4 to 14th October, 2010, will be the country’s biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games.

New Delhi is only the second Asian city to host the Commonwealth Games after Kaula Lumpur. (ANI)

Glenys Heyward put in wheelie bin, court hears

A farm worker accused of helping murder Glenys Heyward has told the Supreme Court at Mount Gambier he thought Neil Heyward had put his wife in a wheelie bin to take her to a quieter place to talk.

Giving evidence, Jeremy Minter said he had no idea Heyward planned to kill his wife at a house at Pick Avenue in Mount Gambier in 2007.

Minter said Neil Heyward had asked that he help him try to talk to his wife.

There was a dispute over property.

Minter told the court he was surprised and disgusted when Heyward kicked his wife in the face.

He said Glenys Heyward was conscious and talking when her husband put her in a wheelie bin and said ‘This is where pieces of garbage like you belong’.

Minter said he believed they were going to another quieter place where they could yell and scream at each other as much as they wanted.

Jolie visits ‘dire’ refugee camp in Kenya

Washington, September 14 (ANI): Angelina Jolie recently visited a refugee settlement camp in Africa.

As United Nations Goodwill Ambassador she spent a day at the Dadaab Refugee camp on the Kenyan border.

The beauty was appalled to see the conditions of 285,000 refugees living in a camp, which was initially made for just 90,000 people.

Somali people, who have fled into Kenya because of atrocities in their country, live in the camp.

The ‘Gia’ star wants to bring world’s attention to the plight of the refugees.

“If this is the better solution, then what must it be like in Somalia? The toilets are already overflowing. There is not even enough space for trash dumps so people are living amongst the garbage,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“What is amazing is that as more and more people come into the camp, the Somali families continue to be generous with what little they have, even if that means having one eighth of the water they need and their children suffering from dehydration,” she added.

The beauty met some families in the camp too.

She said: “The Somali families I met today are full of warmth and affection. I wish more people could meet them because then they would have a stronger desire to help.” (ANI)

Cindy Crawford advises cheating husbands to hire housekeepers

London, Sep 11 (ANI): Cindy Crawford has a recipe to keep cheating husbands from straying-hire housekeepers.

The supermodel claims that the move would give overworked wives more time to keep their partners satisfied.

The catwalk queen and husband Randy Gerber have been married 11 years, and Cindy admits that it takes a lot to keep the passion in a relationship alive.

Thus, she has insisted that finding another woman to do the chores will keep men from straying, as wives will have more time to satisfy their husband’s carnal desires.

“I think it’s probably a better investment for men to pay for someone to take out the garbage,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

She added: “It’s probably a lot less expensive to hire a housekeeper for your wife, and she might want to have sex with you more – instead of paying the prostitute… if you can afford a prostitute, you can afford a housekeeper.” (ANI)

Gorilla-like creature resembling ‘Bigfoot’ photographed in Kentucky backyard

London, September 10 (ANI): A gorilla-like creature that resembles the mythical creature ‘Bigfoot’ is causing excitement on the web after being photographed in the back garden of a home in Kentucky in the US.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the large, hairy beast can be seen in a blurry picture taken on an automatic camera set up by an amateur hunter.

While flicking through images of rabbits and deer, Kenny Mahoney noticed a dark, humanoid creature that does not look like any of the southern US state’s known native species.

The mystery animal’s head appears too small for it to be a bear, leaving Mahoney wondering whether he had accidentally captured one of the clearest ever photos of Bigfoot.

“It looked like it had the outline of a head, and like gorilla type shoulders, and then the arms crossed is what it looks like to me,” said Mahoney.

“One of the explanations my brother-in-law said it may be a garbage bag blowed up in there, but all the smashed over vegetation in there – I really don’t know. I have no idea what it is,” he added.

Mahoney said he is very doubtful that the creature in the photo is Bigfoot.

His wife Margaret has sent the image to a wildlife expert in the hope of getting it identified.

The mythical ape-like creature Bigfoot is most regularly sighted in the forests in the northwestern states and provinces of North America, although last month a teenage girl in Poland reported seeing a similar beast.

Last year, two men in the US state of Georgia claimed to have discovered a body of Bigfoot, but subsequently confessed that photos they produced as “proof” of their find actually showed a rubber ape costume. (ANI)

Cities trap more CO2 than rain forests

Washington, September 9 (ANI): A surprising new study has found that cities trap more carbon dioxide (CO2) than rain forests.

According to a report in National Geographic News, compared with tropical rain forests, cities store more carbon, acre for acre, in their trees, buildings, and dirt.

“Everyone thinks about the tropical forests, but I don’t think people consider cities as a way to store carbon,” said study leader Galina Churkina of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research in Germany.

“Although a lot of studies have focused on carbon in forests, grasslands, and other natural ecosystems, looking at cities-which now house half of the world’s population-is relatively new,” Churkina said.

Intentionally storing carbon in cities could be one approach to counter global warming, she added.

Churkina and colleagues pulled together previous evidence looking at various stores of organic carbon, which comes from living things, as well as from such as plants and animals, wood, dirt, and even garbage.

Cities, including both dense metropolises and sprawling suburbs, store about a tenth of all the carbon in U.S. ecosystems, the study estimated.

In total, U.S. cities contain about 20 billion tons of organic carbon, mostly in dirt, according to the new study.

Some of this carbon-rich topsoil is in parks and under lawns, but it’s also sealed underneath buildings and roads-a remnant of grasslands or forests that were there before development.

Of all this urban carbon, about three billion tons are locked up in human-made materials-two-thirds of it in garbage dumps, and the rest in building materials such as wood.

Many cities have already launched ambitious plans for turning gray to green, such as Los Angeles’ Million Trees LA project, which aims to plant a million trees in the Californian city over several years.

Trees take up CO2 and turn it into carbon in their trunks, branches, and leaves, so planting more trees helps counter some of the excess CO2 in the air.

Likewise trees also cool cities and reduce the need for air-conditioning, according to urban forest expert David Nowak of the U.S. Forest Service in Syracuse, New York.

By planting trees around buildings, he added, “you avoid about four times more CO2 emissions than the trees sequester.”

Study leader Churkina added, “people could (also) try to store more carbon in gardens by smart management of the land. The carbon storage in lawns is quite amazing.” (ANI)

Cairo’s slums get an energy makeover

Washington, August 30 (ANI): Reports indicate that the slums of Cairo, Egypt’s largest city, have got an energy makeover, with solar panels sprouting on apartment rooftops, providing residents with clean power and water and a chance to directly improve their lives.

According to a report in National Geographic News, since 2003, the nonprofit Solar CITIES project has installed 34 solar-powered hot water systems and 5 biogas reactors in Cairo’s poor Coptic Christian and Islamic neighborhoods.

“Our program is unique, in that we’re implementing rural-type solutions in an urban environment,” said project leader Thomas Culhane, an urban planner and 2009 National Geographic emerging explorer.
“It’s the kind of stuff you would do in the Peace Corps in an African village, but we’re doing it right smack dab in the slums of a city,” he added.

Solar CITIES’ hot water systems are constructed from recycled materials and are uniquely tailored to the parts of a city where water and electricity availability are often sporadic.
“The problem with professional solar hot water systems is that they’re made for cities with continuous water,” Culhane said.

By contrast, Solar CITIES’s water heaters use a city’s water when it’s available but draw from a backup storage tank when it’s not.
The setup consists of an insulated rectangular box covered in clear glass or plastic on one side. Inside the box are copper tubes wrapped in sheets of aluminum, which are painted black.
Sunlight striking the darkened aluminum is converted to heat, which is then used to warm water flowing through the pipes.
The glass sheet on top of the box prevents the heat from being carried away by wind.
The water, which can reach temperatures of 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius), is then pumped into an insulated plastic barrel for storage.

The water, which remains warm long after sunset, can be connected to an apartment’s plumbing system.
Solar CITIES also installs biogas reactors, which are based on designs Culhane saw while working in India.
The reactors use microbes harvested from animal guts to break down food wastes into flammable gas that can be used for cooking and heating.

If necessary, the reactors can draw hot water from the solar water heaters to maintain the warm temperatures the bacteria need to survive.
By attaching a simple plastic tube to the reactors, gas can be piped down several stories for residents to use.
“In 24 hours, you’ve got 2 hours of cooking gas from yesterday’s cooking garbage,” Culhane said. (ANI)

Morgan Freeman not to marry step-granddaughter, says publicist

Washington, July 11 (ANI): American film star Morgan Freeman is not going to marry his step-granddaughter, his publicist has said.

The denial from the actor’s publicist comes as a reaction to reports suggesting that the Shawshank Redemption star, 72, is romancing 27-year-old E’Dena Hines.

A report published by U.S. tabloid the National Enquirer recently suggested that the two of them were planning to wed, after the finalisation the actor’s divorce from his second wife Myrna Colley-Lee.

However, according to Contactmusic, Freeman’s spokesman Dave Falkenstein has now said that there was no truth in that story, and branded it “complete garbage”. (ANI)

Microscopic ‘beads’ may revolutionise organ transplantation

Washington, July 7 (ANI): If Medical College of Georgia researchers are to be believed, organ transplantation in future may include microscopic beads that create “designer” immune cells so that patients may tolerate their new organ.

Dr. Anatolij Horuzsko, reproductive immunologist at the MCG Center for Molecular Chaperone/Radiobiology and Cancer Virology, has already used this approach successfully in mice with skin grafts.

“It’s absolutely natural,” says the researcher.

The degradable microparticles deliver the most powerful known form of HLA-G, a natural suppressor of the immune response, straight to dendritic cells, which typically show the immune system what to attack.

The microparticles are given right after a transplant, just as dendritic cells are giving the immune system a heads up to get busy attacking the new organ.

Dr. Horuzsko says that microparticle therapy likely would be needed for just a few weeks, until the dendritic cells have learned instead to ignore it.

“It’s like a calming effect and once tolerance is established, we don’t need it any more,” he says.

His team compared the success of HLA-G microparticles with the dendritic cell marker to those without a marker, those with were much more efficient at getting where needed and acting.

He says that those without direction likely were consumed by garbage eaters called macrophages.

“We want to create in kidney transplant patients, the same tolerance to the new kidney,” says Dr. Horuzsko, who reckons that HLA-G microparticles could be doing just that within five years.

He presented the patented process along with his other latest HLA-G findings during an opening lecture of the 5th International Conference on HLA-G in Paris, July 6-8.

Dr. Horuzsko believes that marked microparticles also have treatment potential in diseases where the immune system attacks normal tissue, such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

He is currently working in collaboration with Dr. Laura Mulloy, chief of the Section of Nephrology, Hypertension and Transplantation Medicine in the MCG School of Medicine, to find out whether higher natural levels of HLA-G already are giving some transplant patients an edge, by comparing HLA-G expression in those who keep and reject their transplanted kidneys. Youngsters participate in cleanliness drive on Jhelum’s banks

Srinagar, July 5 (ANI): Several youth from different States have come together to spread awareness about the need to maintain cleanliness and preserve popular tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir.

The youngsters are participating in a nine-day camp under a National Youth Camp and cleaning the area surrounding world famous Jhelum Lake.

Organised by the National Youth Project, New Delhi in association with Peace Foundation, Jammu and Kashmir, the camp is to last till July 9.

Volunteers collect garbage dumped on the banks of Jhelum Lake during the camp.

“The cleaning drive also sends a strong message that our property, tourist spots must be saved from all kinds of pollution and this property of Kashmiris must be preserved since many people depend on this lake for their livelihood,” said Fayaz Ahmed, chairman of Peace Foundation, Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides the cleanliness drive, the youth are also spreading a message of peace and brotherhood in the valley.

After Jhelum, the youngsters’ next plan is to clean world famous Dal Lake in Srinagar.

“We are cleaning by collecting plastics from the roads and taking clearance of the Jhelum Lake,” said Sunil Kumar, a youth from West Bengal.

Kashmir has been among the top Asian tourism destinations, particularly for the honeymoon couples, holidaying crowd, nature lovers, skiers and trekkers.

According to official figures, 430,000 tourists including 23,000 foreigners visited Kashmir in 2008. (ANI)

Jacko’s family started hunting for cash hours after his death, reveals nanny

London, June 28 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s nanny, Grace Rwaramba, has revealed that she was shocked to see how the ‘Thriller’ star’s family started hunting for cash hours after his death.

The 42-year-old woman, considered to be closest to Jackson and his three children, was in London when she heard the news that the singer had died at a rented Los Angeles home on Thursday.

She says that while preparing to board a plane to fly home and comfort the orphaned kids, she got received a shocking call from one of the Jackson family.

“The relative said, ‘Grace, you remember Michael used to hide cash at the house? I’m here. Where can it be?’” the News of the World quoted her as saying.

“I told them to look in the garbage bags and under the carpets. But can you believe that? They just lost Michael a few hours ago and already one of them is calling me to know where the money is!

“They also told me the children were crying and asking about me. They can’t believe their father died,” she added.

Uganda-born Grace-who has spent five years working as Jackson’s secretary, and 12 as nanny-also spelled out her fears over the orphaned kids Prince, 12, Paris, 11 and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, known to the family as Blanket.

She admitted: “I’m really distraught for them. Michael hadn’t been eating and the kids have been so scared for him. Now the youngest has been saying, ‘Why Daddy? God should have taken me not him.’”

Grace revealed that she fled America to join TV interviewer Barak at her Swiss holiday home after being abruptly sacked by ailing Jackson just two months ago.

She presently finds herself at the centre of the billion-pound custody battle for the children, currently being looked after by Jacko’s mum Katherine, 79. (ANI)

Civic body employees’ strike disrupts normal life in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, June 19 (ANI): Normal life has been badly disrupted following an indefinite strike by civic body employees, causing acute water shortage and leading to growing garbage dumps in various parts of Uttarakhand.
Tourists and local residents are bearing the brunt of the ongoing strike as there is acute water shortage and accumulation of garbage dumps in the city.

“We are facing lot of problems. Water comes in the morning and that too for one hour. After one hour it stops coming and the water pressure is also very less. We don’t get any water to drink. There is growing garbage dump and no cleanliness. Also, there is power shortage. What should we do in such condition?” said Sushma, a local resident in Dehradun.

Even the supply of drinking water bottles in the market has run out due to heavy demand.

On Thursday, striking employees gathered at Gandhi Park in Dehradun city and raised anti-government slogans.

The agitating employees demanded implementation of Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and pledged to continue the strike until their demands were met.

“Our demands are first, that there should be no disparity in the payments or salaries of employees and recommendations of sixth pay commission should be implemented. Second, daily wage workers and PTC workers should be regularised. Third, pension and other allowances of all civic body workers should be at par with the state employees. Fourth, appointment should be made for all vacant posts that are vacant for past several years,” said Bhupindar, State President of Local Bodies Association.

The employees belonged to Uttarakhand civic bodies Dehradun Municipal Corporation, Jal Sansthan, and Panchayats. (ANI)

Pet lovers happy with dignified burials of their loved ones

Bangalore, May 15 ANI): Pet lovers are happy as their loved ones get a dignified burial at a cemetery in Bangalore.

A non-governmental organization – People for Animals (PFA) – has made a graveyard for pets giving a sigh of relief to all those pet lovers who cannot bear the pain of dumping their loved ones into garbage.

Several people flock the cemetery everyday to either give a dignified burial to their pets or remember the ones who left them years ago. They also planted trees on the cemetery.

Each tombstone explains a different emotion and abundant love. While some of the graves in the cemetery are simple plaques, others are marble epitaphs where the owners have poured their hearts out.

Some pet lovers claim that they feel comfortable in the cemetery as they can remain close to their loved ones.

“Till they are alive we love them a lot but at the end we usually cant give them a place like this. But now we found a place and it’s really nice. I think every person who has a pet should come here,” said Sahana, a pet lover.

S.V Prasad, manager of People for Animals said that many pet lovers appreciate the place.

“This has been well appreciated in the city by many pet owners. And we continue to improve upon this service so that a large number of people do come and have the facility,” said Prasad.

‘People For Animals’ organization also offers service to bring the dead pet to the burial ground and after doing all the ceremonies they are buried scientifically. By Jaipal Sharma (ANI)

Steve Waugh cleans muck in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 8 (ANI): Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh cleaned muck from an Indian water body in Kolkata during the cleanliness drive in the city.

Wading through the dirty waters of the canal, Waugh took many by surprise as he got his hands and feet dirty while cleaning the waste at Ananadapally region of the city on Thursday.

The enthusiasm soon caught on and many children also joined Waugh on his cleanliness drive, which is an initiative of a self-help group, Kolkata Foundation.
Toiling hard, the many pair of hands soon flushed out a large amount of garbage from the canal.

Speaking about his experience of lending help in the project, Waugh said, “This is all about cleaning up the waterways and that’s going to be awesomely good for the kids and good for the people. They can get some fish back in here. It’s a nice project to be involved in.”

Shamlu Dudeja, CEO of Kolkata Foundation, said, “Everybody knows how dirty Kolkata is. If by looking at Steve doing this work, if people of Kolkata can be enthused, then that will be the best thing you can have.”

Waugh has lent his support for various community services in Kolkata over 11 years, when he became closely associated with Udayan, a rehabilitation centre for children suffering with leprosy.

He had also pitched in his support to build homes for tsunami victims in Andaman Nicobar islands in 2005. (ANI)
