Option of Modi being summoned remains open, says Nanavati Commission

Gandhinagar, Apr 1(ANI): The Nanavati Commission, which is probing the 2002 Godhra incident, on Thursday informed the Gujarat High Court that its decision to not summon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was not the final decision.

The Commission was today responding to a notice sent by the High Court on March 22, in which it was asked from the Nanavati Commission to clarify whether it would summon Modi by April 1.

The High Court was acting on the petition filed by the Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM), which had moved an application before the Nanavati Commission in April 2007 demanding that Modi be summoned for questioning.

Talking about today’s proceedings in the court, JSM lawyer Mukul Sinha said: “The proceedings were based on our request for the Chief Minister (Modi) to be summoned before the Nanavati panel.”

“In September 2009, the Nanavati Commission had declined to summon the Chief Minister, but today they have replied to the High Court’s notice saying their decision of not summoning Modi is not final and the option of him being summoned remains open,” Sinha added.

Sinha further informed that the next hearing regarding the issue would be on 17 June.

This would spell more trouble for Modi, who was questioned by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) on March 27 for over five hours regarding his role in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots. (ANI)

Narendra Modi denies he was summoned by SIT

Gandhinagar, Mar 22 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he was not summoned to appear before a Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing 2002 Gujarat riots cases on March 21.

On Monday evening Modi released an open letter defending his stand.

In a strong statement issued a day after he was reported as having kept the panel waiting for him to appear before it, Modi said: “It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT on March 21.”

In the statement Modi pointed out that March 21 happened to be “a Sunday and a public holiday.”

“The purveyors of lies did not even bother to check whether the SIT officers appointed by Supreme Court were present in Gujarat on March 21,” Modi said.

Modi alleged that the date March 21, was given out by “some vested interests and as part of the effort to interfere in the due process of law.”

Modi said in his statement that he would respond to the SIT, “fully respecting law and keeping in view the dignity of the body appointed by the Supreme Court.”

The SIT headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director K R Raghavan, is looking into nine cases of 2002 Gujarat riots.

The SIT asked Modi to appear in connection with the Gulbarg Society carnage case.

Earlier in the day, the Gujarat High Court issued a notice to the Nanavati Commission asking it to explain, by April 1, whether it too would summon Narendra Modi as part of its inquiry on the Gujarat riots of 2002.(ANI)

Maoists suspected to be gaining ground in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, Mar 22 (ANI): Gujarat Police suspect that Maoists are slowly gaining ground in the State.

Gujarat, which is one of the states in the country having a large tribal population, has so far remained unaffected from the Naxal menace.

Police suspect that a recent arrest of a Maoist leader from Surat and spurt in Naxal meetings, secret movement of the ultras in the State and distribution of leaflets asking people to join the armed movement indicate that Naxals are trying to spread their network in the State.

Police have arrested Niranjan Mohapatra, a resident of Orissa, from Surat last week for suspected Naxal activities.

According to sources, the Naxal are targeting migrant labourers who come to the State in large numbers in search of jobs from Naxal affected States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and other areas, as their potential cadres.

Gujarat Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Sudhir Sinha the Maoists are using Gujarat as place to recruit potential cadres from the large number of migrant population, especially in Surat and collect funds for their movement.

“CPI-Maoist cadres are brainwashing potential migrant recruits and are sending them back to the State of their origin to work there,” Sinha said.

However, Police claim that Naxals have failed in gaining acceptance among local population so far.

“Their attempts to gain popularity among tribal population of the south Gujarat district of Dangs also have not obtained good results so far,” Sinha added.

Compared to Naxal affected states Gujarat has good infrastructure like roads in tribal areas and better living condition.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat Police is compiling various interrogation reports of Maoists activists arrested in other states and also examining various documents being distributed by them in the tribal belt of south Gujarat. (ANI)

Methanol in spurious liquor led to Ahmedabad hooch tragedy

Ahmedabad, July 13 (ANI): The hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad was caused by the mixing of a huge quantity of methyl alcohol with the spurious liquor, doctors have said.

“Methanol, which is not for human consumption, was found in large quantity in the patients who were admitted to the civil hospital after consuming spurious liquor,” Assistant administrator of civil hospital Dr Gautam Sharma said.

The post-mortem report of the bodies, which were brought from other hospitals to civil hospital, has also confirmed presence of methanol in high quantity, he added.

Directorate of Forensic Science, Gandhinagar, where the samples of the hooch tragedy victims and the spurious liquor has been sent for tests, is yet to submit its report.

“We will be submitting the report on the sample received by us in a day or two,” said Dr J M Vyas, Director of Forensic Science Laboratory.

Methanol, a colourless liquid with a mild alcoholic odour, is not meant for human consumption. Ethanol is used in different quantities for liquor.

The crime branch is investigating from where bootleggers managed to source Methanol in such a large quantity, though it is not available in open market.

As part of the subsequent action following the hooch tragedy, the state police cracked down on dens manufacturing illicit liquor across the state.

Eight people, including three women, who were responsible for supplying the spurious brew to Majoor Gam and Odhav areas have been arrested and are being questioned.

Police are also in search of one Vinod Chauhan alias Dagri from Mahemdabad in Kheda district, who allegedly manufactured the spurious liquor and supplied it to the city.

The state government has also suspended 10 police officials for negligence. (ANI)

Government should review ethanol policy: Kalam

Gandhinagar, May 28 (IANS) Former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has urged the government to review its ethanol policy to encourage more sugar producers to start producing biofuel on a commercial scale.

“The sugar producers need sufficient incentives from the government to be encouraged to produce a large quantity of ethanol,” Kalam said while addressing the first convocation ceremony of the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University here late Wednesday.

“The prime issue is the pricing of the ethanol, which is not attractive enough for the sugar producers,” said the former president.

At present, the government allows blending of five percent ethanol with petrol. In the next phase, this may go up to 10 percent, giving a boost to the industry, Kalam hoped.

He added that an increase in the demand of biofuel would help farmers who cultivate jatropha and algae, from which the fuel is largely being produced in India, earn more income.

According to Kalam, the argument that using plants for biofuel production would lead to food crisis is a “wrong notion”.

“This is certainly not true for India which has nearly 60 million hectares of waste land. Research is required to determine the particular plant variety which would give maximum yield of jatropha seeds and maximum yield of oil from the seeds,” he added.

On the country’s power generation scenario, the former president said India’s capacity had to increase to 400,000 MW by 2030 from the current level of 150,000 MW.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in his address said the state had done well industrially and commercially and should now strive to shine in the academic field. “I invite the youth of the country to adopt Gujarat as their ‘karmabhoomi’ (place of work),” he said.

A total of 119 students who completed their MBA in Petroleum Management were conferred with the degrees.

Advani questions CBI clean chit to Quattrocchi

Gandhinagar, Apr 28 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani on Tuesday strongly questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation’s decision to remove the name of the lone surviving suspect in the Bofors payoff case Ottavio Quattrocchi from the Interpol’s list of most wanted persons.

“Overall the performance of CBI in the last five years, it should be investigated. In a way they have become a tool in the hands of political parties,” Advani said during a road show in Gandhinagar.

Advani said, “Party (BJP) in New Delhi will discuss the matter, but I want to say that it is not just about Quattrocchi.”

The CBI’s decision to eliminate Quattrocchi from the most wanted list is expected to be formally conveyed to the court on April 30.

The agency’s decision is based on the legal advice of Attorney General Milon Banerjee. On October 28, last year, Banerjee had described the Red Corner Notice (RCN) as ” a continued embarrassment.”

A newspaper report quoted Banerjee as saying, “The CBI is under obligation to have the matters set right at the Interpol level, as there is no basis on which the Red Corner Notice can continue. I am of the firm opinion that immediate action should be taken to withdraw the notice.”

In October 2008, Quattrocchi’s counsel had asked the CBI to explain the continuation and legal validity of the Red Corner Notice issued by the Interpol Secretariat General.

When the issue came to CBI’s Director (Prosecution) SK Sharma, he said that the notice was no longer applicable as the arrest warrant dated February 6, 1997, on the basis of which the RCN was issued, had been cancelled by a warrant of November 5, 1999.

Sharma suggested that the Law Ministry’s opinion be sought on the issue.

Following Sharma’s recommendation, the Attorney General observed, “The whole purpose of a warrant of arrest is to secure the presence of the accused. This is possible by extradition when the accused is abroad. But two attempts have failed and the judgements indicate that there are no good grounds for extradition. The warrant cannot remain in force forever. Therefore, the warrant dated February 1997 would lose its validity, particularly in view of the failed attempts of the CBI to extradite the accused in Malaysia and Argentina.”

The Bofors scandal was a major corruption scandal in India in the 1980s, when the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and several others were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply India’s 155 mm field howitzer.

The scandal was worth Rs. 150 billion. (ANI)

Advani claims BJP will emerge as the single largest party

Unnao/Rampur/Ahmedabad, Apr 24 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani has said his party would become the single largest party in the next Parliament.

“The BJP is going to emerge as the biggest party in the Lok Sabha elections. Once the result of the election is out, you will see that National Democratic Front led by BJP will form coalition government,” Advani said in a rally in Unnao.

“The whole talk of Third Front and Fourth Front is a joke. There is no basis to these assertions,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Ansari, who is contesting election from Rampur , lashed out at actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt.

“I want to say that Sanjay Dutt should stop all filmy gimmicks. He should give an answer to the people as to what he has done so far for Rampur in the past five years. Shedding crocodile tears, making terrorists stand on stage, showing filmy gimmicks, Rampur is not a cinema hall and the people of Rampur are not a film screen. The people of Rampur want to ask them what he has done,” Naqvi said.

Meanwhile, another Bollywood actor Anupam Kher lent his support to the displaced Kashmiri Pandits.

Kher, who is a Kashmiri Pandit himself, said that the community should have more representation in the legislatures to make their voice heard.

BJP allies find Modi’s campaigning a burden: Congress

Ahmedabad, April 9 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) allies find Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s campaigning in their states a burden, Gujarat Congress president Siddharth Patel said Thursday.

‘Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has openly said he is not interested in inviting Modi for poll campaigning in his state. There are other NDA (National Democratic Alliance) partners now who are finding Modi to be a burden after inviting him for poll campaign in their states,’ he said in a statement.

Patel said Modi’s presence in various states would in be counter-productive for the BJP allies as he was indulging only in self-praise.

Commenting on BJP senior leader L.K. Advani who filed his nomination Wednesday for the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat, patel said: ‘A leader who has never taken any interest in addressing problems of people in his constituency even after being elected so many times from the Gandhinagar seat, now has his voters saying that it is no use for Advani to contest again if he has no interest in solving problems of voters in his constituency.’

Advani calls ‘Third Front’ a fallacy, ‘Fourth Front’ a fantasy

Patna, Apr 10 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani on Friday said that the Third Front is just a ‘fallacy’ and it has no chance of forming the government at the Centre.

Talking to reporters here, Advani said, “I consider the Third Front as a fallacy. If the Third Front is a fallacy, then the Fourth Front will just be a fantasy.”

An alliance of Leftist and regional parties known as the “Third Front” was formally launched to challenge the Congress and the BJP.

In his appeal to the Hindi speaking people, Advani said that in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh there has been less progress. The UPA led regime at the Centre left these states backward.

“There is development in different states of the country, but in these four big Hindi speaking states, there is no progress. We know the initials of these states are Bi for Bihar, Ma for Madhya Pradesh, R for Rajasthan and U for Uttar Pradesh, which can be now called as Bimaru (ill). They are undeveloped. Constantly, we have been insulted,” said Advani.

Advani will be seeking a fifth term from Gandhinagar after his victory from this constituency in 1991, 1998, 1999 and 2004.

His main rivals are Congress nominee Suresh Patel and noted danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, who is making her electoral debut as an independent.
