Cricket-Bangladesh record first victory over England

England, July 10 (Reuters) – Bangladesh recorded their first victory over England in test or one-day internationals when they won the second 50 overs international by five runs on Saturday.

The Bangladeshis have defeated each of the other test playing nations at least once in either form of the game.

Blackhawks trade Byfuglien in multi-player deal with Atlanta

(Reuters) – Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks have released forward Dustin Byfuglien in a multi-player trade with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Sports

The 25-year-old Byfuglien, who scored 11 goals during Chicago’s run to their first championship since 1961, will head to Atlanta with center Ben Eager, defenseman Brent Sopel and prospect, Akim Aliu.

The Blackhawks receive a first and second-round pick in exchange, along with forward Marty Reasoner, winger Joseph Crabb and prospect Jeremy Morin.

Chicago have been forced to part with some of their players due to salary cap issues and lose Byfuglien after he netted five game-winning goals in the post-season.

“It is what it is. It’s part of the job,” Byfuglien told a local Chicago radio station. “You’re not going to stick in one spot the whole time, so I’ve got to go.”

Drogba confirmed in Ivory Coast team

(Reuters) – Didier Drogba returns to the starting lineup for the Ivory Coast against Brazil in their World Cup Group G match Sunday.

Sports

The Ivory Coast captain and leading scorer broke his forearm in a friendly against Japan in Switzerland just over two weeks ago and came on as a substitute in the goalless draw against Portugal wearing a protective plastic cast.

Drogba replaced Gervais Kouassi, the only change in the Elephants’ starting line-up.

Brazil named the same team which struggled to a 2-1 win over in their opening match last Tuesday.

Kaka, who is still not 100 percent fit after an injury-plagued season, was included in the starting line-up although coach Dunga said on the eve of the match that it was not certain whether he would play the whole game.

Portugal plot three-phased attack on North Korea

(Reuters) – Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz plans three-phased assault on what he expects to be a highly defensive North Korea on Monday as he plots a course through Group G into the last 16 of the World Cup.

Sports

After their goalless draw with Ivory Coast and a daunting clash with Brazil still to come, Monday’s clash with the tournament’s rank outsiders will make or break Portugal’s chances of progress.

A win is obviously essential but Queiroz said the need for a boost to their goal difference can only be factored in once the foundations are set.

“It is an extremely important game, decisive for the final placings. It’s all or nothing as far as we are concerned and the players are well aware of that,” Queiroz told reporters after his team trained at Green Point stadium on Sunday.

“We will play tomorrow with three issues, which we can’t confuse.

“First, we have to play entertaining, enthusiastic and rapid football, much faster than against Ivory Coast, to find a way to win.

“Then we have to score goals but we can’t even talk about that until we have scored one. Then, after all that, we can look at the league table.

“It is a phased approach, we cannot start at the end.”

Having seen North Korea defend so diligently against Brazil Queiroz knows his team will have to be creative to find a way through.

“We have to play with our intelligence,” he said. “Sometimes it is said that the most direct route is circular and we certainly can’t spend the game banging our heads against the wall.

“Ivory Coast defended from midfield but from what we saw against Brazil, North Korea will sit much deeper. We have to use our technical prowess, especially in the last third, to force them into errors.”

One of the keys best suited to unlocking such a massed defense is a player with outstanding individual skill and Queiroz is fortunate that in Cristiano Ronaldo he has one of the absolute best in that department.

Though he has not scored an international goal for 16 months Ronaldo remains confident that having got the first game out of the way, the 2006 semi-finalists will find their feet.

“The most difficult phase is over, we were anxious in that first game, many of the players had not been at a World Cup before and we knew it would be complicated,” he said.

“There are fewer pressures now, I think we have overcome the greatest barrier and will win tomorrow.

“As for me, the goals will surface tomorrow or next year, I have faith. If I don’t score that’s not the end of the world, the issue is for us to win.

“If it’s a large margin then all the better but 1-0 will be satisfactory because we don’t fear Brazil. They are a great team, five-time champions, but we are going to face them in the last game with the belief we can win.”

Terry tells French they were wrong to expel Anelka

(Reuters) – France made a mistake in expelling striker Nicolas Anelka from their World Cup squad, his Chelsea captain and former England skipper John Terry said on Sunday.

Sports

Terry told reporters at England’s World Cup base at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus that he admired Anelka as a player and as a man and felt it was wrong to send him home on Saturday.

He said: “I see they sent him home for voicing his opinion and maybe a few of us (England players) will be sent home after this evening!”

Anelka was sent home after allegedly insulting France coach Raymond Domenech last Thursday during their 2-0 defeat by Mexico in a Group A game at Polokwane.

Terry was referring to a planned crisis meeting of the England squad with manager Fabio Capello scheduled to take place later on Sunday evening.

He added: “But I can speak honestly about Nico. He is a really good guy.

“Before he came to Chelsea, a lot negative stuff was written about him but as a person you won’t find a better man in football.

“He is very quiet but he has been in the game a long time and he knows his football so, if Nico had something to say to me, I would stand up and listen — because he is a great player as well

“It is obviously the wrong decision.”

Aussie Kewell gets one match ban for sending off

(Reuters) – Australian forward Harry Kewell was suspended for one match by FIFA’s disciplinary panel on Sunday following his red card against Ghana on Saturday, FIFA said in a statement.

Sports

He will miss Australia’s next Group D match against Serbia on June 23.

Kewell handled the ball on the line to deny Ghana a certain goal in the 24th minute of Saturday’s game at Rustenburg which ended in a 1-1 draw. Ghana scored from the resulting penalty.

Strasburg gets victory as Nationals dump Indians

(Reuters) – Stephen Strasburg followed his dazzling Major League Baseball debut with another steady performance to lead the Washington Nationals to a 9-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Sports

The 21-year-old power pitcher struck out eight batters and allowed two hits in 5-1/3 innings for his second win despite fighting control on the mound and walking five batters.

Strasburg, the most anticipated prospect in years, allowed just one run but was relieved in the sixth inning after walking consecutive batters to load the bases.

The Nationals gave Strasburg plenty of run support in the sixth as a two-run double from Ivan Rodriguez and a two-run triple by Ian Desmond gave Washington a 6-1 lead.

Strasburg delivered one of the best MLB debuts of all-time on Tuesday when he struck out 14 Pittsburgh batters and allowed just four hits, no walks and struck out the final seven batters he faced before being taken out of the game.

Germany stick with Klose for opener

(Reuters) – Germany coach Joachim Loew stuck with out-of-form striker Miroslav Klose for the team’s opening World Cup Group D game against Australia on Sunday.

Sports

He also went for youth over experience on the right wing, giving 20-year-old Thomas Mueller his third cap ahead of 26-year-old Piotr Trochowski.

Klose, who was top scorer at the 2006 World Cup with five goals having finished second with five at the 2002 tournament, only netted three times for Bayern Munich last season.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek left Harry Kewell on the bench and gave Richard Garcia, who usually plays as an attacking midfielder, his eighth cap as the lone striker ahead of Josh Kennedy. Garcia has never scored for Australia.

China’s Li Na beats Sharapova in Edgbaston final

(Reuters) – China’s Li Na proved too strong for former world number one Maria Sharapova at Edgbaston for the second year in succession on Sunday when she claimed the grasscourt title with a 7-5 6-1 victory.

Sports

The top seed was given a tough fight early on by Sharapova before racing to her third career title.

“It’s always exciting to be in the final, you can show your best tennis to everyone,” Australian Open semi-finalist Li said.

“There’s nothing better than winning a final. Today I hit the ball flatter and it makes it easier to win points on grass.”

Three-times grand slam champion Sharapova, trying to climb back into the world’s top 10 after her career was stalled by a serious shoulder injury, lost to Li in last year’s semi-finals.

Although she again found the Chinese blocking her attempt to win a third Edgbaston title, the Russian was far from downhearted as she switched her focus to Wimbledon.

“The goal was to get as many matches as I could and I did that and I’ve played opponents with different types of game,” Sharapova said. “It’s always nice to win a tournament but it doesn’t always happen.

“I would have loved to win but she was the better player today and she did many things better than me. She returned great. I put her under no pressure whatsoever on her serve.”

Sharapova said she could not wait to get to Wimbledon’s practice courts next week.

“The week before Wimbledon is always great as there’s no one around and you can walk around and take it all in,” the 2004 champion said. “You can really sense the feeling of the tournament.”

Lanka defeat NZ in second US T20 clash

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the second of two Twenty20 matches, part of international cricket’s historic attempt to break into the US market.

Sri Lanka triumphed in the low-scoring affair with more than four overs to spare to earn a 1-1 draw in the series on Sunday.

Nuwan Kulasekara tore through New Zealand’s top order, taking three wickets in the second over as he removed openers Brendon McCullum and Aaron Redmond along with Rob Nicol.

New Zealand were an embarrassing 13-5 at one stage.

Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum were the only New Zealanders to reach double figures, but the 81 runs amassed by New Zealand was no challenge for Sri Lanka even on the slow, lifeless pitch.

Vettori’s 27 gave New Zealand a glimmer of hope, and Nathan McCullum’s 36 took their total to 81 before they were bowled out in the 18th over.

Mahela Jayawardene got Sri Lanka going with a 12-ball 17.

Thissara Parera added 24 and Tillakaratne Dilshan overcame his struggles to find his timing for an unbeaten 33.

Sri Lanka had lost Saturday’s opening game of the series, which marked the first cricket games on US soil between two ICC full members.

Venus outguns Schnyder to advance in Paris

Second seed Venus Williams took the first step towards a maiden French Open title when she outgunned Patty Schnyder 6-3 6-3 in the first round on Sunday.

Venus, who lost the 2002 final to sister Serena, could have expected a trickier match against Schnyder but the wily Swiss has been struggling with injury and she eased to the opening set in 32 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Wearing a risque dark outfit that resembled a nightdress, Venus broke in game eight of the second to lead 5-3 and she eventually served out for victory in an hour and 20 minutes, sealing the win with a forehand winner.

She now plays Japanese qualifier Kurumi Nara or Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain for a place in the third round.

Soderling makes hay while sun shines in Paris

Robin Soderling sauntered into round two of the French Open on Sunday with the minimum of effort after a 6-0 6-2 6-3 victory over French wildcard Laurent Recouderc.

Soderling, the man who stunned the tennis world 12 months ago by inflicting Rafa Nadal’s only defeat at Roland Garros, stormed through the first nine games and a rare whitewash looked on the cards.

But Recouderc, encouraged by a sun-baked crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, finally broke his duck in game 10 and mockingly egged on the crowd with a punch in the air.

But Soderling, the fifth seed, unleashed his brutal forehand time and again to ease through in just an hour and 34 minutes to book a place in round two against either American Taylor Dent or Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti.

Cricket in UK schools ‘less elitist and more ethnically diverse than in past’: Survey

London, May 20(ANI): A new survey has revealed that cricket in the UK has become less elitist and more ethnically diverse than in the past, with it growing in popularity among kids in state schools.

The survey was conducted by the ‘Chance to Shine’ foundation, which has brought cricket to a million schoolchildren across the UK. The results were based on an online YouGov survey of 993 parents of children aged 8 to 17.

When asked whether ‘cricket has become less elitist’ than when they were at school, three times as many parents of children at state schools polled strongly agreed (42 percent), compared to those that strongly disagreed with the statement (13 percent).

Twenty-four mums polled said that cricket is now offered as a team sport to girls at their child’s school, twice the number that say the “gentleman’s game” was an option for them when they were at school (11 percent).

It also showed that a whopping 72 percent of parents believed playing cricket could improve their child’s grades.

Meanwhile, England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff explained why he has been backing the foundation.

“Cricket in state schools was in real danger of dying out before Chance to shine launched in 2005,” The Sun quoted Flintoff, as saying.

“I believe every child has the right to play competitive cricket at school and to learn skills that they can use throughout their lives,” he added. (ANI)

Clarke adamant about keeping Oz Twenty20 captaincy

Sydney, May 20 (ANI): Twenty20 skipper Michael Clarke, whose tenure comes in for review over his poor batting in the shortest version of the game, is adamant about retaining the Australian Twenty20 captaincy.

Clarke has already conceded that his position might come under review following Australia’s seven-wicket loss to archrivals England in the final of the World Twenty20 Cup.

He finished with 92 runs in the tournament at 15.33. White on the other hand scored 180 runs at 45, with a strike rate of 146.34 compared with Clarke’s strike rate of 80.7.

“No doubt (I want to continue), I’m disappointed we couldn’t win the World T20, win the final, but I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity,” Clarke said on Wednesday.

“I’ve loved playing with the guys, I’ve had a lot of support from people back at home, the people who came and watched the games in the West Indies, and family and friends, so it’s been great and I’m enjoying it (the captaincy),” he said.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke as saying it might be time he re-acquainted himself with the aggressive and nimble-footed technique he first brought to the Australian team.

“Who knows? Maybe I need a little bit of that back,” said Clarke of his former, youthful approach.

“Everybody has a different role in our team though and that is one thing that players certainly are aware of, and you need to do your role to the best of your ability. For me my role is not the same as Dave Warner or Shane Watson.

“I always want to perform, I always want to score runs, it doesn’t matter what form of the game I’m playing, but like I said in this game, sometimes you can’t always make those runs,” Clarke added. (ANI)

Clarke defends Oz team’s achievement inspite of loss to England

Sydney, May 20 (ANI): Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke, who was disappointed to lose in the final against England, has said the Australian team has made great strides in the Caribbean despite failing to lift the trophy.

“It was a wonderful achievement from the Australian Twenty20 team (to make the final),” he said.

“I thought we played fantastic cricket through the whole tournament, very exciting cricket,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke, as saying.

“I think the semi-final against Pakistan was one of the greatest games of all our careers and one we’ll remember forever,” he said.

Clarke was doubtful about the impact that the result might have on next summer’s Ashes series.

“Obviously disappointed to lose the final but I think we’ve shown in this form of the game that we continue to improve,” he said.

“It hurts losing to England in any form of the game but there’s a lot of guys in both teams that won’t take part in the Ashes series,” Clarke added. (ANI)

Pak lost to ‘extraordinary performance’ from Australia in T20 WC semifinal: Afridi

Karachi, May 19 (ANI): Pakistan T20 captain Shahid Afridi has said that his team lost the semi-final of the ICC World T20 Championship against Australia not because of its bad performance, but because of the ‘extraordinary performance” of the Kangaroos.

“In semifinal Pakistan’s performance was better than expected,” The Nation quoted Afridi, as saying after he arrived here along with some other members of the team like Fawad Alam and Khalid Latif.

Pakistan looked in complete control of the match before Mike Hussey’s breathtaking knock took the game away from them.

Chasing a challenging 192 for victory, Australia needed 48 runs from the last 18 deliveries in the semi-final of the ICC World T20 Championship at the Beausejour Stadium, St Lucia.

The Kangaroos needed 18 more runs in Saeed Ajmal’s last over, and Hussey finished the match in style smashing the off-spinner for three sixes and a four shattering the defending champions’ hopes of making it into the third consecutive final of the coveted tournament. (ANI)
