Federer makes short work of pal Wawrinka

(Reuters) – A grating wind swirled around Chatrier Court, clay dust stung the eyes and spectators huddled together in winter clothing, hardly tennis weather at all really in a city not lacking for Sunday afternoon attractions.

Sports

Then again, Roger Federer was playing, and as he has done all week, was playing majestically well, far too well in fact for the unfortunate Stanislas Wawrinka who found the experience so frustrating that he ended up trashing his racket.

The Swiss maestro handles fickle conditions better than any other player, able to make subtle adjustments to his swings and spins to use the elements rather than fight them.

Watching him at work on Sunday as he dispatched compatriot and close friend Wawrinka 6-3 7-6 6-2, the 28-year-old looked to have everything perfectly under control as he glided into the quarter-finals without the loss of a single set.

During last year’s stumbling run to his first French Open title he had already lost four sets by the quarter-finals stage and looked in danger of missing the golden opportunity created by the unexpected defeat of claycourt master Rafael Nadal.

With a last eight clash against Robin Soderling to come, a man he has a 12-0 record against including last year’s final, the world number one looks to be motoring toward a likely June 6 showdown with Rafael Nadal.

“I’m very happy, you know, because seeing the draw, what was it a week ago or more, it got my nerves going already thinking of who I was going to play,” the 16-times grand slam champion told reporters as he held court at Roland Garros.

“Now I played my first seed in the tournament, and a good friend, as well. I really knew the danger in this match. I was able to hang in there and turn it around in the breaker, but that’s the stuff you need to do.

“Last year I had to battle it out more over four or five sets. It also has advantages to do that as long as you come through. I’m playing really well at the moment, so I’m very happy where my game is at right now.”

Federer had too much guile for Wawrinka, who helped him win doubles gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Two breaks of serve secured the opening set but Federer did finds himself behind in the second as Wawrinka finally managed to express himself against the man whose shadow he has spent most of his career living in.

Wawrinka seemed poised to level the match when he led 4-3 and 40-15 on serve but Federer seized on some unforced errors, broke back and edged a tiebreak after Wawrinka again threw in a couple of errors at 5-5.

“I had taken the lead in the tiebreak. I was playing well, and I lost myself because of two points, two very stupid mistakes,” Wawrinka, who vented his rage by destroying his racket, told reporters. “I wanted to put pressure on Roger, and I didn’t do that.”

The third set was almost academic as Federer surged ahead, clinching victory after one hour 56 minutes when he smashed the ball away into an empty court.

“The second set for him kind of killed it,” Federer said. “He maybe didn’t believe as much in beating me anymore.”

Few of those who walk on court against him ever do.

Steve Waugh hails Indian team’s positive approach

Mumbai, May 5 (ANI): Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh said that the present Indian cricket team’s aggressive approach towards the game has helped it to win several matches in the recent past.

He was interacting with media persons after spending some time with visually-abled enthusiasts of the game here last evening.

Applauding the Indian team’s positive attitude and teamwork, Waugh said that the squad has a bright future.

“India, I think is definitely more aggressive the way they play their game. They are more confident. They probably work together better as a team than they have in the past. That’s probably the three main differences that I see in the current Indian side. They are a very good team. I believe they can win under any conditions,” said Waugh.

Waugh also praised the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, under whose captaincy the team has set a record for most back-to-back one day international (ODI) wins, numbering nine.

“Dhoni, I think gives a real balance and confidence. He is a captain that I think keeps his motions in shape, which I think is very important. But he is a very strong cricketer. He commands respect,” added Waugh.
India won its Test series on New Zealand soil after 41 years in April, 2009, the previous victory being in 1968 under the captaincy of the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansur Ali Khan.

India’s third successive test series victory since defeating top-rankedustralia in November has triggered a debate in the cricket-mad nation as tohether the team is the country’s best yet.

Meanwhile, the visually-abled cricket enthusiasts were overwhelmed after meeting one of the most popular and successful cricketers of all time.

“Waugh is a very kind human being. We felt like as if he is one among us. I was very happy to meet him,” said Devi Das, a visually-abled man.

Waugh, one of the most successful skippers of Australian cricket team, has been active in several charitable causes after retirement from the game.

He has been a sort of patron to Udayan, a Kolkata-based voluntary organisation engaged in running orphanages and tending children of ‘have-nots’. (ANI)

Remand for Kodnani, Patel extended by three days

The Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court on Wednesday extended the police remand of BJP leader Maya Kodnani and Jaydeep Patel, former general secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, for three more days.

The two leaders have been arrested by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) for their alleged involvement in the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre case, in which 11 people were killed.

The prosecution had demanded extension of the remand for seven more days, as it wanted to interrogate Kodnani and Patel in connection with a number of issues. A list of this was put forward by the SIT in its remand application on March 28 when the two leaders were sent to four-day police remand.

“We need to further interrogate them to find out the source of the inflammable material, which the accused were found distributing among the rioters among other things. Considering the seriousness of the case, the court has granted the remand extension,” said Special Public Prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt.

The two are accused of conducting and instigating riots in the Naroda Gam locality of Naroda.

Maya takes on Cong, SIT; says riot probe biased

Dr Maya Kodnani, former minister in the Modi government and an accused in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case, on Thursday alleged that the investigation carried out by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team was biased. Terming her arrest as a political conspiracy, Kodnani accused the SIT of working at the behest of the Congress.

Kodnani levelled these allegations while talking to the media after she was produced before the Metropolitan Court by the SIT. The court extended her police remand for three more days along with that of former VHP general secretary Jaydeep

Patel.

Giving a political tone to her arrest, Kodnani said she has been subjected to atrocities, and that the people of the country, particularly the women, would give a fitting reply to this in the Lok Sabha elections.

She further said: “Yesterday, SIT chief R K Raghavan and C V Satpathy (an SIT member) were in their office. We tried to represent certain issues to Raghavan thrice, but he refused to meet us. This shows the prejudice with which the SIT is functioning.” “However, we have full faith in judiciary and are confident that we’ll come out of the case innocent,” she added.

Even Patel accused the SIT of conducting one-sided investigation. He also expressed his faith in judiciary, saying he was confident of coming out clean in the case.

The two leaders were produced before the magistrate in a packed courtroom.

When they were brought out, a number of people shouted slogans in their support.

Kodnani and Patel are accused of leading rioting mobs in the Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam areas on the city’s outskirts, where 106 people were killed on February 28, 2002.

A number of witnesses in the case have stated to have seen them Patel near the rioting site, distributing inflammable material and weapons to the rioters.

Cong hits back at arrested minister, says state govt picked SIT members

REACTING to Maya Kodnani’s allegations that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is working at the behest of the Congress, party’s Gujarat unit president Siddharth Patel said she levelled these charges to hide names of the ‘real people’ behind her arrest.

Patel said: “The SIT, probing some of the post-Godhra riot cases afresh, was constituted by the Supreme Court. The Gujarat government selected officers to SIT. So, how can the Congress be responsible for that?”

“The affidavit against Kodnani in the Sessions and Gujarat High Court was filed by the SIT. Also, her anticipatory bail was cancelled after SIT’s petition in the high court,” he said, adding: “So, it is quite obvious who are the real people behind this. Where does the Congress have a hand in this? Everything has been done by the Gujarat government.”

Kodnani, a BJP MLA, had resigned from the post of state minister after the Gujarat High Court cancelled her and co-accused Jaideep Patel’s anticipatory bail last week.

Gujarat HC rejects Maya Kodnani’s bail plea

Ahmedabad, Mar 27 (ANI): The Gujarat High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail of Gujarat Women Development and Child Welfare Minister Maya Kodnani.
Kodnani, who is accused for having led a mob in the post-Godhra riots in 2002, had seeked a stay in the judgement for a period of six weeks.

The Gujarat high court on Monday had reserved its order on the application filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) challenging the anticipatory bail granted to Kodnani, and VHP leader Jaideep Patel.

Justice DH Waghela also heard the applications filed by three witnesses of the 2002 riots cases seeking to join as party in the application submitted by the SIT.

Appearing for the witnesses, lawyers Mukul Sinha and SH Iyer submitted that 28 people affected by the riots had filed complaints before the police in 2002 when they were in the Shah Alam relief camp, out of which two had named Kodnani and around 20 had named Patel.

The lawyer submitted that the police had omitted the names of the two leaders in the clubbed FIR.

The SIT also refuted allegations raised by Kodnani’s counsel, Mahesh Jethmalani, that the SIT had been working with “mala fide” intentions to tarnish her image.

Aceh deputy governor: Killings not political

Banda Aceh, Indonesia – Recent killings of former rebels-turned-politicians in Indonesia’s Aceh province were not politically motivated, the province’s deputy governor said Tuesday.

Four members of the Aceh Party, the political wing of the former separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM), have been killed in the past two months by unknown assailants, sparking fears of further violence ahead of the April 9 general elections.

The Aceh Party is one of six local parties allowed to contest for provincial legislative seats under a 2005 peace pact between the government and GAM, which ended decades of conflict in the province.

Aceh Deputy Governor Muhammad Nazar, a former independence supporter, said he agreed with police assertions that the killings were not linked to politics.

“The events in recent months were purely criminal acts according to police, so we don’t see them as a big threat to peace,” Nazar told the German Press Agency dpa.

He urged police to thoroughly investigate the murders and a series of grenade attacks targeting Aceh Party offices since last year.

“We are optimistic that peace will prevail. All parties concerned are committed to it,” said Nazar, who leads the Aceh People’s Independent Voice Party.

In the latest incident, a member of the Aceh Party was found floating in a waste pool on Friday, with his throat slit and hands bound, local media reported.

A new report by the World Bank’s Conflict and Development Program said 16 people were killed, 47 were injured and 17 buildings or vehicles were damaged in violence in a three-month period to the end of February.

“These incidents brought tensions, in particular between the Aceh Party and security forces to unprecedented levels since [the peace pact],” the report said.

However, the report said it remained unclear whether the violence was politically motivated.

Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf is a former separatist guerilla who won the gubernatorial election in 2006, two years after the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Aceh province.

The International Crisis Group think tank said in a report released Monday that the crux of the problem was “the mutual fear and loathing” between GAM and the Indonesian military.

Many in the military are convinced that GAM is still committed to an independent Aceh and has only changed its tactics, the report said.

Former rebels, on the other hand, see the military as its main opponent, and encourages the perception that all attacks on its members or offices are somehow linked to the military, the report said.

The Crisis Group said many attacks over the past three years had been the result of internal conflict among former rebels.

The military has been accused of gross human rights violations during the conflict in the province. (dpa)
