Jackie Chan in earthquake charity concert

London, April 28 (ANI): Jackie Chan and more than hundred stars from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan participated in a charity concert to raise money for earthquake victims in China.

The five-hour concert in Hong Kong raised 4.8 million dollars for victims of the disaster in China’s Qinghai that killed more than 2,200 people earlier this month.

Chan visited the affected area last week, featured in a video produced for the fundraiser, which showed him living with the victims, reports The BBC.

“The quake area is located in a plateau. It”s ten times worse than we thought. And the winter will come soon. It is urgent to take action,” said actor Andy Lau.

One week after the area was devastated by the disaster, China observed a national day of mourning for victims. (ANI)

Car rally fundraiser hits Broken Hill

Around 30 cars rolled into Broken Hill yesterday, as part of the 2010 Crusin’ Along Car Rally.

The Rally is a fundraising drive for Cancer Care Western New South Wales – who are building a Lodge in Orange, for regional cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment.

Fundraising Chairwoman, Jan Savage says while Broken Hill residents often seek treatment in Adelaide, there will soon be another option available to them.

“There was no accommodation and actually no radiotherapy facility available for a lot of the western area people,” she said.

“The accommodation and the cancer treatment centre, the bunkers, will be open in about 12 months time at the end of April, beginning of May 2011.”

The Rally will travel to White Cliffs tonight.

Stand And Deliver teacher dies

Jaime Escalante, a maths teacher who inspired underprivileged Los Angeles students and whose story was made into the movie Stand And Deliver, has died from cancer aged 79.

Born in the Bolivian capital of La Paz, Escalante was credited with turning Garfield High School in Hispanic-heavy east Los Angeles into a centre for successful maths and science students through his enthusiasm and use of unorthodox teaching methods.

Actor Edward James Olmos was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Escalante in the 1988 film.

Olmos and some of the film cast members held a fundraiser earlier this month to help Escalante’s family pay for treatment at a cancer centre in the neighbouring state of Nevada, local media said.

Escalante died in the town of Roseville, California “surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” Olmos told The Los Angeles Times.

Olmos told the paper that he drove Escalante from the Nevada to Roseville on Monday (US time).

Escalante “did so much for so many people. And he did it with such grace and dignity,” Olmos said.

“They are non-stop emailing at the moment,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The couple had divorced earlier this year. (ANI)

US footballer claims being Farrah Fawcett’s first and last love

Melbourne, Aug 31 (ANI): A former US footballer claims that he was the first and last love of late actress Farrah Fawcett.

Greg Lott, who says he first met Fawcett in the 60s, also claims that actor Ryan O’Neal’s heart-wrenching return to her side and his support during her dying days was nothing more than an act for the camera.

According to The Mail, Lott dismissed the image of Fawcett and O’Neal’s tragic rapprochement as nothing but Hollywood fantasy, and says that for the last 11 years of her life, she was involved in a very private romance with him.

“We were blind, crazy, in love,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“Farrah was my best friend and my inspiration.

“We fell in love with each other all those years ago and we never really stopped loving each other. Our lives took us in very different directions but, in the end, her heart always came home to me and Texas,” he said.

Lott also claimed that O’Neal froze him out of Fawcett’s life against her will, and that she referred to O’Neal as the “Fat F*** from the beach”.

O’Neal’s spokesman has dismissed Lott’s claims as “categorically false”, but the actor’s son Griffin has stated otherwise.

“I have to thank Greg Lott for one thing: For loving Farrah the way she deserved to be loved. Ryan was just there for the acclaim,” he said.

Lott revealed the last time he spoke to Fawcett was a couple of months before she passed away.

“I last spoke to Farrah late on the night of April 9 – two-and-a-half months before she died. She was preparing to come home from a bout of treatment at St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica,” he said.

“She told me: ‘I’m coming home tomorrow. I love you and I will call you’,” he revealed.

When he did not hear from her, Lott flew to California in desperation, to her home in LA, but he claims O’Neal refused him entry.

“I never got to say goodbye to Farrah. Ryan shut me out of her life,” he said.

Lott, who dated Fawcett from when they were students at Texas University until 1970, got his second chance when her romance with O’Neal came unstuck in 1996 thanks to his volatile temper and infidelity.

“She called and we arranged to meet in Texas,” Lott said.

“She was doing a fundraiser for battered women and invited me to the event at a hotel. She walked into the room and the electricity was there between us,” he recalled.

Fawcett then invited him to visit her at her home in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

“She flew me out to Los Angeles and we fell into each other’s arms,” he said.

“Farrah was always a very sensual woman. She never wore make-up at home and would shop at cheap stores like Walmart for her sweatpants. She had no airs and graces. That’s what I loved about her. She looked a million dollars without doing anything.

“I would look at her sleeping in the early morning and she looked like an angel. I thought I was the luckiest man in the world. She told me, ‘I’ve had the Hollywood men but you’re a real man. You get me.

“She loved to cook and would make me Texan dishes like fried chicken. We didn’t go out much. We’d stay home and watch movies and make love,” he added. (ANI)

Denise Richards feels sad about sending daughter to school

Washington, Aug 25 (ANI): American actress Denise Richards, 38, has revealed that she feels sad about sending her daughter Sam, 5, to school.

Richards has two daughters with ex-husband Charlie Sheen, and they are also parents to Lola Rose, 4.

The actress said that the time had flown by very fast.

“It’s bittersweet,” People magazine quoted her as saying at the Much Love Animal Rescue’s third annual summer fundraiser Bow Wow WOW Howlywood! in Los Angeles.

“Sami starts kindergarten, which I cannot believe, in a couple of weeks. I’m so sad about it.

“I can’t believe how fast five years have gone. I’m very proud of her and very happy, but from here on out she’s in school,” she added. (ANI)

Imran Khan and Jemima still a compatible team

London, May 25 (ANI): Former Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan and his former wife Jemima might have divorced, but they still make a compatible team, for the latter has taken the liberty to offer coaching from Imran to help the fundraiser at her kids’ school.

Jemima has offered cricket coaching by Imran as part of a Great Ormond Street Hospital fundraiser at the West London School, where her kids Sulaiman, 12, and Kasim, 9, study.

Bidders can spend money on cricket coaching from Imran Khan, kindly donated by Jemima.

“Jemima has remained close to Imran,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.

“She stuck up for him when he went on hunger strike, protesting against Pakistan’s former President Musharraf and even though they’re no longer together, they still make a great team when it comes to raising the children,” the source added. (ANI)

Martha’s Vineyard prepares for possible Obama vacation

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Though the White House says President Obama and his family have “no plans” to vacation on Martha’s Vineyard this August, businesses on the island for the rich and famous are preparing for a possible “First Family” visit.

Well-connected residents of Martha’s Vineyard, a seashore paradise, say President Obama has rented a home in the East Chop neighborhood of Oak Bluffs — a town on the island’s northeastern shore that is rich in African-American history.

Notable black Americans have owned homes in Oak Bluffs, including writer Dorothy West, former Massachusetts Sen. Edward Brooke, and New York Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., the first African-American congressman from the East Coast since Reconstruction.

Other celebrities, including Spike Lee and Oprah Winfrey, have been frequent guests in the island community, Fox News reports.

Oak Bluffs is gearing up for Washington royalty as the Obamas’ popularity on the island is palpable.

Art galleries lining Vineyard Haven’s main street are adorned with paintings of the president. The Crocker House Inn is arranging a Michelle Obama “welcome bag” filled with island delicacies and local flowers. And Mocha Mott’s coffee shop is brewing a special roast called “Mochabama” — a blend of black and white chocolates, store owner Tim Dobel told FOXNews.com.

“His visit would be great for business,” said Andrew Gilmore, a worker at the island’s landmark retail store, The Black Dog.

Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce executive director Nancy Gardella could not confirm that the president will be staying here this summer, but said “people are definitely talking about it.”

Gardella said she is working to create a Web site where islanders can post activity suggestions for the first family, such as a kayaking trip out to Cape Poge in Chappaquiddick or a trip to the island’s most popular ice cream store.

“The vineyard has a long history of presidential hospitality, and we would be thrilled to welcome the president and his family,” she said.

Bill and Hillary Clinton made several trips to Martha’s Vineyard in the 1990s, often staying at friends’ homes in Edgartown.

Though the island has an eclectic mix of people, Gardella and others said Martha’s Vineyard has long appealed to the rich and famous because “you can walk around without having a shave and nobody cares.”

While residents express excitement over a possible presidential visit, the question most whispered in local taverns is: From whom might Obama be renting a vacation home?

“No oyster knife has cracked that one open just yet, but all bets are on Ron Davenport, Wayne Budd, or Charles Ogletree,” said a local businessman, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Obama, who does not own a vacation home, visited Martha’s Vineyard last August to attend a campaign fundraiser at the waterfront home of Ron Davenport — chairman of Pittsburgh-based Sheridan Broadcasting Corp., the largest African-American-owned communications network in the United States.

The president has stayed at the Oak Bluffs home of Harvard Law professor Charles Ogletree — a close confidant — on several occasions, beginning in 2004 after the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett also has a home in Oak Bluffs.

Planned visit or not, residents say the buzz over an Obama retreat is a boost to the island’s economy. (ANI)

Gazza rolls back the clock, plays first footie match in two years

London, May 4 (ANI): Former England football star Paul Gascoigne defied doctors to play his first footie match in two years on Sunday.

He played in a friendly despite suffering from an agonizing foot condition.

Gazza, 41, who has been sober for five months, feared he might have to pull out of the fundraiser for cash-strapped Darlington FC after being struck down with “foot drop” last week, reports the Daily Star.

The condition left him struggling to raise his foot and he is set to undergo electrolysis nerve treatment over the next few weeks.

But it did not stop the ex-Newcastle hero turning out for a North East All Star XI at the Northern Echo Darlington Arena. It was the first time Gazza has played since he broke down in a friendly in 2007. (ANI)

Former Israeli premier Olmert faces indictment for corruption

Jerusalem – Israeli Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz told former prime minister Ehud Olmert Sunday that he is considering indicting him on corruption charges, pending a hearing in which the ex-premier will be able to state his version of events, local media reported.

According to the allegations, when serving as trade and industry minister before he assumed the premiership, Olmert participated in an application before the ministry’s Investment Centre to award a government grant to a factory endorsed by his former law partner.

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss has already slammed Olmert for “conflict of interest” in the affair.

Olmert already faces indictment on two other charges. In what is known in Israel as the “money envelopes affair”, he is accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars, much of it in envelopes stuffed with cash, from Morris Talansky, a US businessman and fundraiser.

He is also suspected having multiple-billed travel expenses while serving in public office in the years before he was elected premier in March 2006.

Two other investigations against the former prime minister have been closed without recommendations he be indicted.

But public pressure over the investigations led Olmert to bow out of politics, and not run at the head of his Kadima party in the February 10 elections.

Republicans ditch Palin for Gingrich

Washington, Apr. 1 (ANI): Congressional Republicans have decided to ditch the former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in favour of the former House speaker Newt Gingrich for the House-Senate fundraising dinner on June 8 in Washington.

This is a gazebo Republican event to raise money for GOP House and Senate candidates.

Just weeks ago, the House and Senate Republican campaign committees had firmly secured telegenic Palin for the major fundraiser. But Alaska Governor’s attitude made things go awry.

When spokespersons for the committee insisted that Palin was scheduled for the dinner, her office declared that she was still considering the invitation and had not yet made a decision.

Republicans fumed over how the governor handled this.

“She was a disaster. We had confirmation,” Fox News quoted one Republican source, as saying.

As for inviting Gingrich, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain said the GOP decided to go in another direction.

“Speaker Gingrich is a leader,” Spain said.

The campaign committees were so annoyed with Palin that they did not even bother to officially notify her that they rescinded the invitation, sources claimed.

The decision to book Gingrich instead of Palin seems to be indicative of growing discontent in the party with the Alaska governor and her potential ability to lead the GOP.

It is only the latest in a series of blunders that Palin has been accused of since November.

Earlier this year, Palin withdrew at the last moment from speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference meeting in Washington. (ANI)

Madonna’s millions raised from Malawi fundraiser go ‘missing’

Washington, April 1 (ANI): Millions of dollars raised from Madonna’s Malawi fundraiser last year have no address, it has emerged.

According to Fox News, the estimated 3.7 million dollars remain unaccountable after repeated inquiries to The Gucci Foundation and the singer’s Raising Malawi charity.

The Queen of Pop had previously urged her fellow celebrities to donate for the cause, which is backed by Jewish mysticism Kabbalah and dedicated to helping Malawi’s one million poverty-stricken orphans.

The US-based channel claimed that fourteen months ago the entire event was alleged to have been underwritten and the amount divided between Raising Malawi and UNICEF.

But, both the Gucci Foundation and Madonna’s non-profit organisation were yet to file a Form 990 tax statement, leaving room for suspicion, according to the channel.

The development comes at a time when the megastar is back in the African country for a second adoption.

The 50-year-old, who adopted three-year-old David Banda from the region, recently pleaded to Lilongwe’s High Court to let her take home four-year-old Mercy James, whose teenage mother had died three years ago.

She will next appear in court for the ongoing adoption process on April 3. (ANI)

Francis Ford Coppola to be honoured at San Francisco Film Festiva

Washington, March 31 (ANI): Francis Ford Coppola is set to be honoured with the Founder’s Directing Award at the San Francisco Film Festival.

The Godfather director will receive the award from the oldest continuously running film festival in the Americas at the Film Society’s Awards Night fundraiser on April 30.

The five-time Oscar-winner will join his predecessors, including Mike Leigh, Akira Kurosawa, Spike Lee, Werner Herzog, Robert Altman, and Clint Eastwood, reports Contactmusic.

Interestingly, the 69-year-old had previously revealed that he was the ‘black sheep’ of the family.

And his parents and siblings used to think that he would end up unmarried, jobless, and penniless. (ANI)

Joel Madden doesn’t know Octomom

Washington, Mar 29 (ANI): Lead vocalist for band Good Charlotte Joel Madden has revealed that he has no idea who famed Nadya ‘Octomom’ Suleman is .

Even though Suleman has been in the highlight for quite sometime, making headlines and gracing magazine covers, Madden was unaware of her existence.

“I don’t know anything about the Octuplet mom,” Fox News quoted him as saying.

His fiancée Nicole Richie had no comment on the topic either and said she “didn’t want to talk about that”, when the subject was brought up.

The two along with Benji Madden were at Hollywood hotspot MyHouse on March 23 for the Sony Cierge and The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation cocktail fundraiser for UNICEF’s Tap Project.

“We’ve always been about the children’s organizations and we’ve always liked working with kids,” Joel said.

“So when we started our foundation it was all about kids and it’s just what’s dear to our heart, we do want to help all children. Kids in Africa are just as important as the kids in America, and the kids in America are just as important,” he added. (ANI)

Hayden Panettiere underplays paparazzi attack reports

Washington, Mar 13 (ANI): Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere tried to talk down reports claiming that she lashed out at a journalist in Hawaii, saying that they were blown out of proportion.

Hayden reportedly shouted angrily at a reporter, who tapped her shoulder at a fundraiser gala in Hawai.

Hayden shouted: “You all make my life miserable.”

However, Hayden maintains that she has a great deal of respect for the media, and she suddenly shouted at the paparazzo because he scared her by suddenly grabbing her from behind.

“I have tremendous respect for the media and reporters – particularly the press who treat the people they are interviewing with dignity. I am appreciative that the press has supported me, my career, and especially the causes I feel passionately about.

While in Hawaii, one reporter grabbed me suddenly from behind and frightened me. It happens. Typically, the press has treated me with great respect,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling OK magazine. (ANI)

When Hayden Panettiere lost her cool in Hawaii

New York, Mar 10 (ANI): ‘Heroes’ star Hayden Panettiere lost her cool while interacting with the media on the red carpet at a recent event in Hawaii.

The actress was seen ranting at photographers when she hit the red carpet at a fundraiser gala, according to reports by Us Weekly.

“Back up!” The New York Daily News quoted Panettiere as saying.

After that, the 19-year-old, who recently split with co-star Milo Ventimiglia, then stormed past reporters.

When one reporter touched the starlet’s shoulder and asked “May we talk with you Hayden?”

She replied: “Don’t you ever touch me!” and turned to a press handler and asked frostily, “Oh, am I supposed to do interviews?”

And the final blow came when the petite blond went off saying “you all make my life miserable!” to the waiting media and refused to answer any questions.

However, it wasn’t the first time Hayden has lost her cool on the red carpet.

In July, the actress threatened to “kill” an Us Weekly reporter after a story about her break-up from “Laguna Beach” star Stephen Colletti was published.

A rep for Panettiere refused to comment on the issue. (ANI)
