Fireworks fly, tears of joy fall as Spain win Cup

(Reuters) – Tears of joy fell, fireworks exploded in the night sky and voices went hoarse in Spain after ecstatic fans watched their team beat Netherlands 1-0 to win the World Cup final for the first time on Sunday.

Andres Iniesta’s goal deep into extra time sparked the celebrations and many of the thousands watching the game at giant outdoor fan zones around the country burst into tears.

“It’s well deserved. They are a very close team of players,” Julio told Reuters in Madrid as supporters hit the streets to celebrate. “Spain tried to play football and Holland only tried to kick them,” he added.

Over 100,000 people flocked into the center of Madrid to watch the game on giant screens, faces painted in red and gold with flags wrapped round their shoulders, and the tense nature of the game made the outpouring of emotions stronger at the end.

After Spain’s goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas lifted the trophy in Johannesburg the parties got into full swing.

Impromptu fireworks displays could be heard all over Madrid, cars screeched through the streets with flags flapping and Spaniards young and old joined the party.

Children looked slightly bemused while some of the older ones seemed lost for words.

“We’ve been waiting years for something like this (at the World Cup), said Miguel. “They are a real team and they deserve it. Iniesta was the man of the match.”

Amidst the wild celebrations a solitary Dutch fan called Anoushka, dressed in an orange dress, said: “I didn’t like the way Netherlands played, Spain deserved to win.”

Spain are expected to return to Madrid on Monday and will have an open top bus parade around the capital in the evening before a giant party on the banks of the river Manzanares.

Football world cup to be South Africa’s ‘defining moment’

Johannesburg, April 22 (IANS) The 2010 FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa will be the country’s ‘defining moment’, a top official has said.

With just 50 days left before the soccer extravaganza kicks off, preparations are on in full swing, said Danny Jordaan, chief executive officer of the local organising committee.

‘In just 50 days time, we begin what I believe will be one of our most important defining moments, the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This defining moment will last a full month, a moment where the attention of the world will be nowhere but right here in South Africa,’ Jordaan was quoted as saying by BuaNews Wednesday.

‘I call on all South Africans to get involved in the World Cup because this is our tournament. We must remember that a huge part of the success of the World Cup relies on how all South Africans host the world this year. It is up to every one of us to make sure that we show all the visitors and the global television audience the warmth, friendship and unity of South Africa,’ he said.

President Jacob Zuma has LAO called on all South Africans to rally behind the national soccer team, popularly known by its nickname Bafana Bafana.

Bafana Bafana has been drawn in a tough group that includes Mexico and 1998 champions France but the national team will go beyond the first round of the tournament, Zuma said.

Iraq’s two main Shi’ite blocs discuss merger

Iraq’s two main Shi’ite political blocs, one led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and another whose leaders have close ties to Iran, are discussing a merger that could widen Iraq’s sectarian divide.

A union between Maliki’s State of Law and the Iraqi National Alliance, two of the top three vote-getters in Iraq’s March 7 parliamentary election, could sideline secularist former premier Iyad Allawi, whose cross-sectarian Iraqiya coalition won strong support from minority Sunnis.

A merger could also push aside Maliki, who wants another term at the helm. One of INA’s major components, the Sadrist movement of anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, was the top vote-getter for INA and has poor relations with the premier.

The makeup of the next government is being watched closely by Washington, which plans to formally end combat operations in Iraq by Sept. 1, and by global oil companies that have signed multibillion-dollar contracts to develop Iraq’s oilfields.

“There has been more than one meeting with INA to reach a deal to form an alliance or merge both coalitions,” Sami al-Askari, a prominent member of Maliki’s State of Law, told Reuters shortly after another leading member of the bloc issued a public statement saying the two needed to merge.

State of Law is running in a virtual dead heat with Allawi’s coalition. None of the leading blocs is expected to win enough seats to form a government alone and talks between parties and coalitions about potential alliances are in full swing.

The final preliminary vote count is scheduled to be released on Friday, nearly three weeks after the election.

Allawi’s Iraqiya drew strong support from Iraq’s minority Sunni population and analysts have said any attempt to exclude Iraqiya from the government could anger Sunnis marginalised after the 2003 U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

“There is a necessity to merge the State of Law coalition and the Iraqi National Alliance,” Ali al-Dabbagh, who serves as Maliki’s government spokesman, said in a written statement.

FORMER PARTNERS

Maliki and INA’s main component, the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (ISCI), are former partners that split before the March 7 election.

ISCI, formed in exile in Shi’ite neighbour Iran, allied for the election with the Sadrist movement. There had been speculation that ISCI and the Sadrists, who performed strongly, would split after the election.

But INA sources suggested a merger of the two coalitions would include the Sadrists, who are known to have strong objections to Maliki remaining as prime minister.

Al-Askari said there was no talk of dropping Maliki as the candidate for premier of a merged bloc. “There is no other choice except Maliki,” he said.

But a senior INA member and candidate in the election, who confirmed the two blocs were in merger talks, said the union could not happen if State of Law insisted on Maliki as premier.

“It’s impossible to allow Maliki to be PM again,” the official said. “There is no way to change this and if he (Maliki) rejects this, OK, let him go to ally with Iraqiya.”

In reaction to the possibility of a State of Law-INA merger, Iraqiya candidate Jamal al-Bateekh said: “There are people who want to cling to power despite the voters’ interest.”

“Forming coalitions is a natural right for the winning blocs, but we want the country’s interest to prevail, not the sectarian coalitions that will return us to square one.”

Sixteen days after the election, about 95 percent of the vote count has been made public. Allawi’s Iraqiya leads Maliki’s State of Law by about 11,000 votes.

Maliki’s bloc is ahead in seven of 18 provinces and Allawi’s in five. Seats in parliament will be allocated on the basis of a bloc’s success in each province, not the national popular vote.

State of Law and Iraqiya each expect to hold more than 90 of the 325 parliamentary seats. Analysts say INA may win 65-70.

Formation of a new government is expected to take months.

Analysts have said attempts to sideline Allawi could be seen as an attempt to relegate Sunnis to the political wilderness and set back Iraq’s fragile security gains following years of sectarian warfare that killed tens of thousands of people.

The United States plans to halve the number of troops in Iraq by the end of August and withdraw completely before 2012.

Hazard reduction in full swing

Forests New South Wales says it is confident this season’s hazard reduction burning program in the state’s South East started at the right time.

The program began this week, with burning taking place in the Nadgee State Forest and East Boyd State Forest south of Eden.

The department says burning will begin in forested areas that have received some autumn rainfall, and will move to drier areas as winter approaches.

Operations Manager Marty Linehan says weather conditions have allowed the program to start slightly earlier than usual.

“We are probably about a week or two ahead of where we might be on average, but the really good rain we had three or four weeks back has set us up now.

“We are unlikely to get extreme conditions again so it is time to go.”

Mukherjee admits fuel hike has hit commoners

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has admitted that the hike in fuel price has affected the life of the middle class families and lower income groups.Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has admitted that the hike in fuel price has affected the life of the middle class families and lower income groups.

“I do know that when prices go up, common people suffer, poor people suffer. It is not unknown. But at the same time you can”t ignore the fact that when you are to import certain commodities at high prices, it will have to be reflected somewhere,” he said in the course of his reply in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

He also noted how the import of commodities at higher prices leads to inflation.

“Noticing the volatile behaviour of the petroleum prices, and this is a common knowledge it does not require to be an economic expert that when the recovery in the industrialised countries, in Europe and North America start in full swing, there will be higher demand of oil and there is a propensity of oil prices going up,” he said.

In the Union Budget for the year 2010-11 that Mukherjee had presented, the basic customs duty of five per cent on crude, 7.5 per cent on diesel and petrol and ten per cent on other refined products were levied.

He also raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by one rupee per litre each to begin a process of fiscal consolidation. Immediately, oil companies had raised the prices of petrol and diesel across the country.

Mukherjee also raised excise duty across the board on all non-petroleum products by two per cent to 10 per cent and brought in more services in the tax net. (ANI)

SC extends stay on Kanshi Ram memorial construction

New Delhi, Sep. 18 (ANI): Expressing dissatisfaction over the Mayawati Government’s plea, the Supreme Court on Friday extended the stay order on its earlier ruling for stoppage of work at Kanshi Ram Memorial Sthal in Lucknow.

“The affidavit is not satisfactory. The question here has many, many burning issues,” it observed during a brief hearing in the case,” a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam noted.t said the question was whether one could spend so much of money from the state or public exchequer for the purpose.

“Suppose today the legislature decides that 80 per cent of budgetary allocation should be spent on such works of memorials and statues…is it not justiciable,” the Bench asked.

“Serious questions arise in this petition…the cabinet and the legislature have to act under the Constitution,” the Bench added.

The next hearing in the case is on October 5th, and the parties are asked to file their responses to the affidavit by September 29th.

In a detailed affidavit filed in response to the show cause notice issued on September 11, the state government had claimed it had the highest regard for the apex court and that it believed in carrying out its directions in “letter and spirit.”

On September 8, the apex court had ruled that no further construction activities should take place at the memorials which have cost the exchequer 2,600 crore rupees.

However, media reports said construction activities were going on in full swing despite the court’s directive, following which the bench had issued a show cause notice. (ANI)

Construction continues at Mayawati’s dream project in Lucknow

Lucknow, Sep 10(ANI): Disobeying the Supreme Court’s directive, construction activity of Ambedkar Park, one of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s dream projects is continuing in full swing in Lucknow.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice B.N. Agarwal had directed the state government to suspend work at the Ambedkar Park and 12 other projects being built in Lucknow in the name of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) icons.

Contractors working at the park site said they are proceeding with the construction work secretly inspite of the apex court’s order.

“We have been working here secretly, and we haven’t got any orders to stop the work,” said Sanjeev Thakur, a contractor.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of a party meeting, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh went against the construction of the projects in the state saying that all of them should be demolished as soon as possible.

“When our government will come into action, it will demolish all the projects under construction. This is a complete wastage of money. Let it be demolished. The stones and bricks can be utilised elsewhere. Bulldozers should be run over them,” said Mulayam Singh.

As per the information by the Lucknow Development Authority, the state government has spent Rs 34.9 on Mayawati’s eight statues installed in five memorials coming up in Lucknow.

The government has also spent another Rs 33.7 million on seven statues of Kanshi Ram to be installed in the memorials.

There are 60 statues of elephants, the election symbol of the BSP, erected in these memorials at the cost of Rs 522 million.

Each of these statues, together with their granite-covered pedestals, costs Rs 8.7 million. (ANI)

Kashmir’s heritage garden all set to get a facelift

Srinagar, Sep 7 (ANI): Kashmir’s heritage Emporium Garden is all set to get a facelift with the state government planning to spend rupees 15 million to restore the garden to its lost glory.

Located in Srinagar, the garden used to be under the British residency during the state’s erstwhile Dogra era, and the Britishers had planted many exquisite plants and flowers in this garden, which used to be a major tourist attraction before insurgency broke out in the valley.

Now once again, the authorities are working hard to beautify and renovate the garden.

“We have instructions to beautify the garden as fast as we can. And after a month you will see the garden in a new form. We have divided the work into three phases. Short term, where we can work immediately, mid term, where we can work on enhancing the garden all through the year and long term, that entails all the work that we can do in long term, to beautify the garden further and to present this garden to the people.

The people can come and witness for themselves how the garden has been restored to its lost glory,” said Ghulam Sarwar Naquash Director, Floriculture.

With the renovation work in full swing, residents hopes of seeing the garden restored to its lost glory are revived.

“Earlier lots of tourists used to come here, there used to be a fair as well but the deterioration in the situation in the valley also took toll on the garden as people stopped coming here. But now the work is being done to restore the garden and again we hope that once again the tourists will start coming here and fair will be held like it used to be in the earlier days,” said Shabir Ahmed, a resident.

The beautification plan focuses on the integrated development of the garden complex, with landscaping of the lawns, repair of the drainage system.

The authorities hope that the restoration of the Emporium Garden will help to develop the site as a hot spot for tourists. (ANI)

Death toll in cyclone rises further to 113 in Bangladesh

Dhaka- Rescuers Wednesday fanned out across southern Bangladesh to help coastal residents devastated by cyclone Aila and the cyclone-triggered water surge as the death toll by official counts rose to 113.

Local media put the toll much higher, with some saying the death toll was nearing 200 as the storm slammed into the coast of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal Monday.

“We have reports that 113 people were killed. Assessment of damage of property was being done by different agencies at the local levels,” Sahina Sultana, an on-duty officer at the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, told the German Press Agency dpa.

Aila left hundreds of thousands of people homeless as a tidal surge up to four meters high washed away villages, roads and livestock in the coastal vicinity.

Deployed on Tuesday, troops rescued many people, taking them to hospital. They also distributed food, water and other supplies in the coasts and offshore islands, said officials at the ministry.

Food and Disaster Management minister Abdur Razzak, who had been on a visit to the affected areas, said conditions were desperate but that a major relief and rescue operation was in full swing.

“We have adequate resources to ensure food, relief and rehabilitation, and we’ll work for as long as it takes to reach those affected,” said Razzak, who flew back to the capital to preside over an inter-ministry meeting to assess damage.

The minister reported that the worst affected district was Satkhira, an area next to world-heritage Sundarbans mangrove forest, where the rescuers retrieved 30 bodies.

Adequate relief materials were already sent out to the affected areas, he added.

The government estimated some 470,000 families in 14 districts were affected by the cyclone, which struck Monday afternoon leaving a trail of destruction on coastal areas and offshore islands.

Over 500 kilometres of embankments were either partially or completely eroded because of the surge, said officials at the Water Development Board.

The cyclone, which packed winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, has been meanwhile vanished after it turned into a land depression, the Bangladesh meteorological department said. (dpa)

Cyclone Aila kills 82 in eastern India, rescue work on

Cyclone Aila kills 82 in eastern India, rescue work onNew Delhi – The death toll from cyclone Aila that battered India’s West Bengal state rose to 82 as authorities feared that tidal surges triggered by the storm had killed more than a dozen of the highly endangered Royal Bengal tigers, officials and reports said Wednesday.

Although the cyclone that hit coastal West Bengal and its capital Kolkata on Monday eased, heavy rains lashed the region through Tuesday, causing landslides and claiming more lives, officials in the state’s emergency department said.

Local newspapers and news channels, quoting official sources, said a total of 82 people were killed as the cyclone uprooted trees, electricity poles and homes, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The state government confirmed only 69 deaths.

“According to figures we collected, 69 people have died, but the death toll could be higher since rescue workers are reaching remote areas and bodies are still being found,” BC Patra, a state relief official, said over telephone from Kolkata.

Among the worst-hit districts were the coastal South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts where 34 deaths had occurred, the reports said. Kolkata and seven other districts reported the remaining deaths.

Most of the victims were killed as houses and trees collapsed, officials said.

The cyclone claimed more lives Tuesday when it reached northern parts of the state, where heavy rain caused landslides.

Twenty-two people died in landslides in the famed Darjeeling tea district in the region since Tuesday evening, the IANS news agency reported.

The state government carried out rescue operations in the coastal Parganas districts where the cyclone and accompanying heavy rains submerged large swathes of land.

The estuarine Sunderbans region is part of the districts, where several delta islands had been inundated.

“Operations to rescue marooned people in the affected areas are in full swing as the weather has cleared up since the cyclone weakened,” Patra said.

A total of 3.8 million people have been affected by the cyclone in West Bengal as thousands were left homeless since over 185,000 homes were destroyed in the storm.

At least 200 Indian Army soldiers had been deployed to assist in relief operations, with the army also air dropping food packets in the affected districts.

A report in the Times of India daily said forest wardens in Sunderbans – home to one of the world’s largest tiger populations – reported more than 12 Royal Bengal tigers might have been killed as the cyclone tore through the forests.

Twenty crocodiles and two spotted deer were found dead in the Sunderbans. The report said the full extent of damage will be known only after an assessment by forest teams. According to the last government survey, Sunderbans had a total of 265 tigers.(dpa)

Government to push for reform, present Union Budget within 45 days: Pranab

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said the government will push for economic reform and is required to present the Union Budget within 45 days of coming to power.

Addressing his first press conference after assuming charge of the Finance Ministry, Mukherjee said, “We will adhere to this schedule and propose to present the Budget in the first week of July. The regular budget 2009-10 exercises are underway in full swing.”

He said, reviving the growth momentum of India’s economy, which has been affected by the global financial crisis, is the top most priority of the Government.

“The fiscal prudence has to be kept in mind while taking steps for reviving the economy,” he added.

He further said a major consequence of the global financial crisis has been the loss of confidence among industry and business.

“Various coordinated steps taken by the government and the RBI have stabilised the economy in a short period of time. The economic system was keenly looking forward to a stable and effective government to steer it out of the current situation,” he said.

For India’s economic growth, he said, “We are assessing the impact of three doses of economic stimulus we announced in December, in January and in the Interim Budget. Sustained stimulus to growth can be harnessed by the next round of economic reforms. I will get additional inputs when I have my pre-budget consultations with different stakeholders. All this will be distilled into a concrete short-term and medium-term vision and strategy for India’s economic growth.”

Mukherjee said the government has the opportunity to present its vision and approach for the next five years in the forthcoming budget.

“Broadly, the election results have vindicated the strategy of “inclusive growth”. I have no hesitation in saying that alongwith reviving the momentum of growth and employment creation, our government will strengthen the various “inclusive” elements in the coming budget,” he said.

He further added that the Government would have to focus on implementing and strengthening its infrastructure investments.

“These concerns will be addressed with a view to impart further momentum for an early return to the high growth path of recent years,” he said.

On restoring growth and employment, he said, “We are hopeful that an early return to our recent growth performance will help us come back to our preferred path of fiscal prudence. We are committed to restoring growth and employment and that would not have been possible without increased spending funded by incremental borrowing. This would need to be further continued in 2009-10-the current year. However, we are equally committed to the process of fiscal consolidation over a period of say two to three years.”

Speaking on the Prevention of Money Laundering Act Amendment, he said, it was passed by Parliament recently.

“We propose to bring this into force to make India’s Anti-money Laundering regime stronger,” he later said. (ANI)

Twenty-nine militants killed in Swat

Islamabad, May 26 (ANI): Pakistan’s military operation in the Swat Valley is in full swing, which resulted in killing of 29 militants in last 24 hours.

The Taliban is trying to flee the areas and the operation in Swat valley is making headway successfully, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Syed Sumsam Ali Bukhari, said.

He said at least 29 militants have been killed in the last 24 hours, and added that intense fighting is in progress in Kabal and Qambar areas of Swat.

The forces got control of at least three villages in the vicinity of Kabal, Sumsam Ali Bukhari said.

Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that at least six troops were martyred in the operation and 11 others wounded, adding the Mingora streets are witnessing close fighting at the moment; however, more than half of the city is under forces’ control.

“The claim regarding no resistance from Taliban is baseless,” The News quoted him, as saying.

On this occasion, Bukhari said the nation would soon hear the good news regarding the elimination of Taliban as their morale is quite low as compared to the high-spirited forces.

The state minister said the armed forces of Pakistan are gaining success with the support of the whole nation.

The government will undertake every action possible for the internally displaced persons, adding the government may curtail its development budget if it realizes the same necessary to help IDPs.

He maintained that arrested miscreants would soon be brought to the nation and requested the people to help recognize the disguised terrorists moving to other areas. (ANI)

The ‘orgy island’ in Malaysia that wants you to bare all under the moonlight!

Kuala Lumpur, May 19 (ANI): A couple, who is believed to have arranged a sex orgy party on Pulau Perhentian, have been fined 25,000RM under the Entertainment Act 2002 for organising a party without permit.

According to reports, the wild party was going on full swing before Besut District Council (MDB) enforcement officers moved in on the revellers.

It was the second time that such a party had been held on the island. The first party, themed ‘Buffalo Bars Pink Lady’, was organised on May 3.

The party that took place on May 10 was themed ‘Come bare under the moonlight’. It left council officer Razman Ahmad, who led the team, startled to find condoms strewn on the secluded beachfront where the party was held.

“I can’t disclose more facts as the council has lodged a police report on the matter, but I can tell you that there were activities associated with sexual intercourse on that night and this was substantiated by the discovery of sex paraphernalia,” Star Online quoted Ahmad as saying.

Though he has declined to give any details on whether he witnessed the revellers having sex when council officials arrived at the scene, investigations have shown that the organiser was a 31-year-old man from Kedah who arranged the party with his girlfriend from Ireland.

The lady in question is under police investigation for organising similar parties, including in Langkawi and Port Dickson, and also for being the one responsible for posting the invitation on her Facebook.

Ahmad added that the scantily-clad teenagers, some of them foreigners, were intoxicated when his team arrived at 1am in two speedboats, and after he decided to call his superior to brief him on the situation, the police were informed and 15 officers arrived at the scene.

The officers seized alcoholic drinks worth about 90,000 RM, loudspeakers, audio equipment, psychotropic pills, drug and sex paraphernalia during the raid on the party attended by 200 teenagers, who were invited via Facebook.

Of the first party, council president Wan Mustafa Wan Hassan said that the officers were unable to reach the site on time as they received the tip-off late. (ANI)
