A 22-month-old girl has died in hospital after she was run over by a taxi van in the Mandurah, south of Perth, yesterday.
Police say the girl was playing in the front yard of a house on Gavarnie Way in Coodanup when she was hit by the taxi reversing out of the driveway.
The girl was taken to Peel Health Campus but then transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital.
Police have interviewed the taxi driver but no charges have been laid at this stage.
The taxi driver said the accident was every driver’s worst nightmare.
The driver was picking up eight people from the house when the accident happened.
He said there had been a number of children playing in the front yard but he thought they had gone inside.
“The mums had gone inside with all their children, bubs in arms, and that’s when it happened,” he said.
“It’s a taxi driver’s worst nightmare when you see 15 to 20 kids around and nobody’s keeping a head count.”
