Formula One statistics for Turkish Grand Prix

REUTERS – Selected statistics for Sunday’s Turkish Formula One Grand Prix at the Istanbul Park circuit:

-

WINS

Mark Webber’s victory in Monaco was his second in a row and fourth of his career. Red Bull have now won nine races in Formula One and three out of six this season.

The last driver to win three successive races was world champion Jenson Button with Brawn last year.

The last Australian to win three in a row was Alan Jones in 1980/1981 (last two of 1980 and first of 1981).

Ferrari have won 211 times while McLaren are the second most successful team with 166 victories. Williams have 113 wins.

-

POLE POSITION

Red Bull have started every race this season on pole position (Sebastian Vettel 3, Mark Webber 3). The record of 15 in a season is held jointly by McLaren and Williams.

Webber is the only driver to have won from pole position this season, and has done so in the last two races (Spain and Monaco).

The last team to take seven poles in a row was Ferrari in 2000-2001. Ferrari have not been on pole since the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The last driver to take three successive poles was Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in 2007.

-

CHAMPIONSHIP

Four drivers have led the championship in six races this season – Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, Massa, Button and Webber.

Webber is the first Australian to top the standings since Jones in 1981.

-

FRONT ROW

Red Bull have started the last 10 races with at least one car on the front row.

Despite his two wins, championship leader Jenson Button has not started on the front row since Turkey last June.

McLaren last started on the front row in Abu Dhabi last November.

-

TURKEY

In five Turkish Grands Prix, the race has only once not been won by the driver starting on pole position. That was Button who won with Brawn last year after starting in second place.

Brazilian Massa has the best record at the track, with three wins in a row.

-

QUALIFYING

Two drivers have yet to qualify ahead of their team mates this season: Renault’s Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov and Virgin’s Brazilian rookie Lucas di Grassi.

-

POINTS

Webber and Massa are the only drivers to have scored points in every race.

-

MILESTONE

Sunday’s race will be the 800th Formula One grand prix that Ferrari have taken part in, the first being the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix.

Kubica hails Renault return to front row

Poland’s Robert Kubica celebrated Renault’s return to the quick end of the Formula One starting grid on Saturday after he qualified on the front row for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The French manufacturer, world champions in 2005 and 2006, failed to win a race last year and ended the season in turmoil with a suspended permanent ban from the sport after a race-fixing scandal.

Although Fernando Alonso took pole in Hungary last July, before the scandal broke, and finished third in Singapore, the team’s future was up in the air until a takeover was agreed in December with Luxembourg-based businessman Gerard Lopez.

Since then, Kubica has helped revive their fortunes with some determined drives and Saturday’s qualifying was his best grid placing of the year so far.

“It’s a great day for us,” he told reporters. “Five months ago the team was not sure whether we would exist and we are here in Monaco on the front row.”

Kubica finished second in Australia, fourth in Malaysia and fifth in China and is now a challenger again for what would be only the second win of his career.

In Spain last weekend he had qualified only seventh, well adrift of Australian Mark Webber’s Red Bull on pole. Webber was again on pole in Monaco but the gap was reduced to less than three tenths of a second this time.

“If the same car (Webber’s) is one and a half seconds quicker in Barcelona, there is no reason why we should qualify in front of them,” Poland’s first and only F1 driver said of his performance.

“I was already surprised by our pace in free practice and qualifying but miracles don’t happen from one day to another.

“Of course when you are so close you are a bit upset but we have to be realistic and it was a great day for all of Renault.”

Kubica, always at home on a street circuit and winner in Canada in 2008 with BMW Sauber, was confident for the race.

“Generally the characteristic of the car is similar to two days ago and to this morning, actually this morning I felt the car was a bit better with changes more for the race,” he said.

“I was scared with a lot of fuel we would have too much bottoming, so we put up a bit the ride height and raised the car a bit…in qualifying we were slightly at a disadvantage but I think for the race it will be a bit better.

“Of course in Monaco the race is a bit different, it is not about race pace but bringing the car home, pitting at the right moment, getting out of pitstop without traffic,” said the Pole.

Webber on pole for Monaco Grand Prix

Australian Mark Webber made sure of Red Bull’s sixth successive pole position after qualifying quickest for the showcase Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday.

Poland’s Robert Kubica split the two Red Bulls by putting his Renault alongside Webber on the front row and ahead of Germany’s Sebastian Vettel.

Ferrari’s Brazilian Felipe Massa completed the second row in fourth place.

His team mate Fernando Alonso, a two times Monaco winner, watched qualifying from the garage after wrecking his car in final practice. The Spaniard, second in the championship behind McLaren’s Jenson Button, will start from the pit lane.

World champion Button, last year’s winner on the metal-fenced streets of the principality with Brawn GP, just sneaked through to the third and final phase of qualifying and secured eighth slot on the grid.

DiCaprio throws no diva tantrums when asked to seat hop thrice at theatre

New York, May 12 (ANI): He is a world famous star but Leonardo DiCaprio doesn””t do diva fits, even when people do not recognize him.

At a premiere of ‘Iron Man 2’ that DiCaprio and girlfriend Bar Refaeli were attending, some people asked the couple to move out of their seats.

Instead of throwing a fit, the star, under a hat, and his girlfriend, moved to another seat – three times.

Even as the trailer for his new movie began playing, they were asked to move yet again, and the Titanic star obliged silently, smiling at the irony of it all.

“He clearly didn””t realize you could reserve seats. During the previews, Leo and his group were asked to move three times. Then, as the trailer for his new movie, ””In ception,”” began playing, they were asked to move again. They were gracious, [and] Leo was smiling at the irony of it,” The New York Post quoted a source as saying.

They finally sat in the front row. (ANI)

Morrissey’s tribute to late superfan

London, May 5 (ANI): Singer Morrissey expressed his deep sympathies in a tribute that he penned for a long time fan who passed away last month.

After being told by DJ Janice Long of her death, the former The Smiths frontman paid homage to Melinda Hsu – who travelled thousands of miles to follow the singer””s tours – to thank her for giving him “strength” during his live shows.

In a statement, Morrissey writes: “I did not know Melinda personally, but I felt as if I did because she had been a front row fixture for many years… Mel was a smiling face who lent strength to every single concert, even when events were going somewhat pear-shaped.”

“I felt as if I knew Mel because she was always there – regardless of wherever ””there”” happened to be; no snowbound landscape too far, no off-the-beaten track too untrekkable (sic). I often handed her the microphone mid-concert and she would always make an effort to say something different each time.

“What is more, she always seemed so happy to be there on the front row, even though she had heard these live renditions enough times to emaciate the brain of the most inherently decent devotee… Her contribution was a declaration of love for which she seemed to save all of her strength, and for which I could only ever repay with half-witted mumbles of thanks,” The Daily Star quoted him as saying. Lara Bingle’s new job: mag’s online reporter

Melbourne, April 24(ANI): Australian model Lara Bingle is set to work as an online reporter for Harper”s Bazaar magazine during Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

The beauty has been looking for opportunities after a career slack following break-up with cricketer Michael Clarke last month.

“Harper”s Bazaar is excited to confirm Lara Bingle will be reporting for Bazaar TV during this year,” the Herald Sun quoted the magazine as saying.

It added: “Bingle will join Bazaar backstage and front row to give Bazaar TV viewers an insider”s view of Australia”s hottest fashion event, with daily video blogs.” (ANI)

Civoniceva leaves Origin future open

Queensland and Kangaroos prop Petero Civoniceva is bucking the trend of premeditating his representative retirement, with his Origin future to be determined by his end-of-season form with Penrith.

Civoniceva, who turns 34 next week, was expected to follow the lead of fellow Maroons greats Darren Lockyer and Steve Price, who last week announced this year would be their last Origin campaigns.

But despite the lure of bowing out alongside two men he shares so many Maroons memories with, the Panthers skipper has not ruled out taking part in an 11th Origin series in 2011.

Sentiment will not play a part in Civoniceva’s call, but rather his form over the back half of the season with the Panthers.

“In terms of hanging the boots up I’m not too sure yet,” Civoniceva said of his representative future.

“I’ll see how I pull up at the end of this season and if the body’s still going alright, I’ll keep putting my hand up for it.

“I don’t want to overstay my welcome but if the selectors are happy, I’ll be available. The age I’m at now it’s a year-to-year proposition.

“You never know – it might be a situation where the Origin series is a tough one and my form might be waning a bit for the Panthers – obviously I’d have to make a decision (to walk away) then.”

Meanwhile Civoniceva welcomed news from north of the border that Brisbane boss Bruno Cullen said the club can afford to sign both he and Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant next season should they want to.

Civoniceva is eyeing a return to Brisbane – where he played for the Broncos for 10 seasons – next year, but it was initially believed the club would be able to chase only one of the players.

Hannant – Civoniceva’s Australian front row team-mate – is also keen to return his family to Queensland in 2011.

While he has not ruled out staying on with the Panthers, Civoniceva says setting himself up for life after football will play a large role in his decision, which he hopes to have sorted out before the Origin series.

“I’ve been really happy down here at the Panthers, it’s been a great three seasons for me,” Civoniceva said.

“But we have my family and my wife’s family are back up in Brisbane – it’s a huge decision to make.”

Stoner claims pole at favoured Qatar

Australia’s Casey Stoner, riding a Ducati, claimed pole position for Sunday’s floodlit, season-opening Qatar Grand Prix as he targeted a fourth successive win at the desert venue.

Stoner clocked 1 minute 55.007 seconds to see off the Yamahas of world champion Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo in Saturday’s session while Randy de Puniet, on a Honda, was fourth fastest.

Rossi set a time of 1:55.362 as he ensured his world title defence will begin from the front row of the grid in Losail.

His Fiat Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo, who suffered a hand injury in preseason, put in a strong performance with the Spaniard just over half a second off Stoner’s pace.

De Puniet heads the second row after a best time of 1:55.831. Loris Capirossi, on a Suzuki, will start a record-breaking 300th Grand Prix from fifth place.

The veteran, with a time of 1:55.899, was ahead of fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso on a Honda.

‘Happier’ Button expecting his ‘born again’ car to get his season back on track

London, Mar 27(ANI): Reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button has said that his car is better in every area from his Bahrain flop, and he expects to be a strong contender for Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix.

Button had endured a frustrating start to his title defence and his McLaren debut in Bahrain a fortnight ago, where he qualified eighth and finished seventh in the race.

The 30-year-old, who posted the second quickest time in Friday’s practice session at Albert Park, is confident of getting his season back along with fellow Brit and team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

“The car is working much better here and I am much happier with it. Forgetting the pace, the car is feeling very good. From the first lap to the last it is much better than any lap I drove in Bahrain,” The Sun quoted Button, as saying.

“It is working here and we have the correct downforce level for this type of circuit. So, I think we”ll be closer to the front two,” he added.

Button further said that he is looking forward to tough competition from other teams.

“In Bahrain, Ferrari and Red Bull were a long way in front of us. We just have to hope we are a lot closer here and our aim is obviously to be on the front row,” Button said.

“It is going to be tough, but it is never easy,” he added. (ANI)

Kate Moss charity kiss annoys beau

London, March 26 (ANI): Kate Moss annoyed her boyfriend/guitarist Jamie Hince by kissing a fan for charity.

The supermodel planted a peck on a man sitting in a front row at Mummy Rocks charity gig in London.

However, her lover seemed miffed, as he decided to leave the show.

Moss followed ‘The Kills’ member to clear herself, reports the Sun.

The kiss raised 5,000 pounds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. (ANI)

Anna Friel bares all for Breakfast at Tiffany’s role

London, September 20 (ANI): Actress Anna Friel dropped her layers on stage for her role in classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The Pushing Daisies star was said to have left fans with dropped jaws as she stripped off at the preview at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket.

“The guys in the front row couldn’t believe it, their eyes were on stalks. It looked like they were about to pass out,” News of the World quoted one as saying.

The 33-year-old stars as Holly Golightly, the role made famous by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 Oscar-winning movie.

The play opens on September 29. (ANI)

Prince Charles accused of ‘abusing his position’ to influence planning process

London, Sep 2 (ANI): A senior architect in Britain has accused Prince Charles of “abusing his position” to influence planning decisions.

Ruth Reed, the first woman president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), claims that the Prince of Wales used his royal status to interfere in the “democratic process”.

She also accused him of writing letters “behind the scenes” to display his opinions on certain architects and building projects.

“It is unfortunate if anybody uses their position in public life to exert undue influence on a democratic process such as planning,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling BBC Radio Four’s Front Row.

She added: “There appears to be evidence that he has written behind the scenes both about planning applications and also about the appointment of particular architects, which would be an abuse of his position, definitely.”

However, the Clarence House has declined to comment on the allegations. (ANI)

Jackson’s daughter Paris pays tearful tribute at memorial service

London, July 8 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris, made her first public statement as she paid tribute to the superstar by calling him “the best father I could imagine” at his memorial service in Los Angeles.

The emotional tribute by the 11-year-old girl, who Jackson shielded from public view during his life, capped a sombre, spiritual ceremony that celebrated the superstar’s work through his life.

Jackson, who died last month aged 50, once said that his own funeral would be the “greatest show on earth”.

The memorial marked various personal messages by Jackson’s famous friends, but it was his daughter, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, who had for the first time addressed almost one billion people watching around the world.

“Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father I could imagine,” the Telegraph quoted Paris as saying.

Dissolving into tears and turning to lean on her aunt Janet, she added: “I just want to say I love him so much.”

It was the first time the world had heard one of Jackson’s children speak, as the star always tried his best to keep their appearances secret, even having them wear masks or shawls around their faces in public.

Paris, 11, sang along on stage with an all-star cast to Jackson’s songs “We Are The World” and “Heal the world”.

She then took the microphone herself, as she gazed out at the crowd and at the 15,000 pounds bronze and 14-carat gold plated coffin holding her father’s body in front of the stage.

During the service, the little girl sat in the front row with her brothers Prince Michael, 12, and Prince Michael II, seven, who is known as Blanket.(ANI)

Karun seventh in GP2 feature race

Monte Carlo, May 24 (IANS) Karun Chandhok lost out on a possible victory in the GP2 sprint race here Sunday as his Ocean Technology Racing team car encountered a driveshaft problem when he leading.

Earlier, the Chennai-born Chandhok had finished seventh in the feature race that earned him a front row start for the reversed sprint race grid.

Chandhok had qualified 10th for the feature race that he did not start well, slipping to 15th place in the first lap. But he retrieved the situation with an early pit-stop to rejoin the race in the seventh place that he maintained to the finish.

With the grid for the sprint race reversed (1-8 positions), Chandhok started second and went into the lead at the first corner by passing Pastor Maldonado (ART) and opened up a four-second lead.

However, with just eight laps to go, Chandhok slowed and finally grounded to a halt as the right side driveshaft had snapped and lost all drive as he approached the start-finish straight.

Chandhok said: “You don’t get many chances to win at Monaco and this would have been perfect. It’ll take a couple days to get over it but we have to push forward with the conviction of this weekend’s race pace.”

Hamilton says he has ‘fighting chance’ to end his early season misery in Monaco

London, May 23 (ANI): Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton reckons that he has a ‘fighting chance’ of bringing an end to his early season misery in Monaco.

Hamilton is confident his McLaren Mercedes will not be off the pace around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo where he triumphed last year.

He had the day off on Friday and heads into qualifying this afternoon having posted the second-fastest time in practice on Thursday.

Hamilton knows he will struggle on the faster sections of the track tomorrow, but reckons his MP4-24 will handle the slower corners better than his main rivals, The Sun reports.

The Herts-born racer, who has scored just nine points in five races, said: “I am doing everything I can to catch up a little bit but we just don’t have it in the car.”

“But in other areas we are able to do a bit better than the others. Fingers crossed that gives us a fighting chance. Driving Monaco is just a spectacular thing. You can never compare it to any other circuit you go to, or any other experience. It really is such a huge buzz, it feels amazing,” he said.

Hamilton’s first target is getting into top-10 grid shootout after qualifying only 14th at the last race in Spain.

“I definitely feel Q3 should be possible this weekend rather than how it was in Barcelona. When we get there we have to see how we do. In Monaco, the most important thing is to be as close to the front as possible, if not on the front row. But to beat the Brawns again will be tough,” he added. (ANI)

When ‘hot’ Chelsea Clinton stripped down to her sports bra!

New York, May 16 (ANI): Chelsea Clinton sure has a taut body and she’s leaving no stone unturned to flaunt it.

The former first daughter was recently spotted in the front row at Soul Cycle on West 72nd Street on May 15.

Soul Cycle hosts the toughest spin class in Manhattan, reports the New York Post.

Clinton stripped down to her sports bra and bike pants and gave a good view of her six-pack.

Then, she let out an excited whoop when the instructor blasted Guns N’ Roses’ classic ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’. (ANI)

A-Rod dating ‘The Real Housewives’ babe?

New York, Apr 13 (ANI): Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is reportedly dating a contestant from ‘The Real Housewives of New York City’.

The 33-year-old baseball star was seen sharing an intimate dinner with Bethenny Frankel at a local restaurant in Miami on April 10.

According to The News’ Gatecrasher column, Frankel and A-Rod hooked up “three months ago”.

However, Frankel later laughed off the reports.

She said, “We’re madly in love; we’re engaged. I fly to Miami every weekend. I’m in the front row when they’re playing. I never felt this way.”

But really, she insisted, “No, I’ve never been in the same room with him.”

However, sources say that Rodriguez subsequently got in touch with Frankel.

“I think the reports sparked his curiosity. I think he respected the way she denied it,” the New York Daily News quoted an insider as saying.

“They could be a match,” said a friend.

“She’s very athletic – she snowboards and surfs. She’s an expert on nutrition. She’s also a no-nonsense, straight-shooting lady. And we know Alex likes strong women,” the friend added. (ANI)

Chris Jericho says his ‘bitch slap’ to Rourke will be heard round the world

New York, March 21 (ANI): Real-life wrestler Chris Jericho has said that he will give ‘The Wrestler’ Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke the bitch slap that will be heard “round the world”, when the latter attends this year’s Wrestlemania.

“I will get out of the ring, walk over to Mickey, and slap him in the face,” the New York Daily News quoted Jericho as saying.

Rourke fuelled the feud with the two-time world heavyweight champ at the SAG Awards, by boasting that he could kick the WWE superstar’s butt.

The Hollywood star has plans to attend the 25th anniversary event April 5 at Reliant Stadium in Houston to support wrestler pals Jimmy Snuka, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper and Ricky Steamboat.

“If Mickey isn’t sitting in the front row, I’ll go to the bar or the bathroom, wherever, and find him and slap him across the face,” Jericho said.

“I think he’s going to stand there and take it. I’ll hand him the microphone and he’s going to apologize, and I’ll just keep smacking him in the face until he gets the hint,” he added.

Even though Jericho himself wants to try his luck in acting, he insists that his anger stems from seeing someone go outside what he knows.

“I appreciate Mickey’s talent as an actor, and that’s why I think he’s an inspiration and a mentor in a lot of ways,” he said.

“It’s Mickey as a person I have a problem with. He blurred the line between fantasy and reality. There’s a big difference with playing a wrestler and actually being one. Mickey has been asking for this for years,” he added.

Rourke’s management team was unavailable for comment. (ANI)
