Radio Pakistan unhappy over criticism of Jaswant Singh book on Jinnah

Abohar, Sep.3 (ANI): The expelled Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jaswant Singh has got a new fan in Punjabi Durbar programme of Radio Pakistan.

In its latest edition, the Punjabi Durbar programme has described all political parties of India be it Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress or Shiv Sena being anti-Pakistan for voicing objection to Jaswant Singh’s book- “Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence”.

In its recent Punjabi Durbar Programme, Radio Pakistan said that Jaswant Singh has paid a huge price for his biography of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

Many Indian scholars have expressed sympathy with Jaswant Singh, but have taken exception to Pakistan Radio describing all Indian political parties as anti-Pakistan.

Anil Kumar, a historian and a commentator on current affairs has stated that political parties in India have tried their best to cultivate good relations with Pakistan ever since independence.

“India has been maintaining friendly relationship with Pakistan since 1947. India parted with funds held by united India, when Jinnah demanded it. Even after Pakistani aggression in 1965 and 1971, India returned to Pakistan the territory which was in India’s possession in the hope that there would be cordial relations between the two countries,” he said.

“Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh have been continuously trying to maintain good relations with Pakistan, but Pakistan continued terrorist attacks in India,” Anil Kumar added.

“India is a secular country. There are more Muslims in India than the total population of Pakistan. Moslems are happy to be in India. Many feel that they are safer than in Pakistan, which is being subjected to violence by the Taliban,” said Anil kumar, who is, an expert on Indo-Pak affairs.

India is continuing talks at different levels despite incidents like Mumbai terror attacks and Pakistan’s ongoing support to militancy in Kashmir.

It is surprising that broadcasters of Radio Pakistan expect political parties in India to sing praise of Jinnah, who was chiefly responsible for the division of the sub-continent on the basis of religious identities.

They accept Jinnah’s contribution during the freedom struggle against the British Raj, but are critical of his role in dividing the country. (ANI)

Islamabad, Aug.18 (ANI): Pakistan has said it has taken Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh’s remarks ‘very seriously’, asking New Delhi to provide information regarding Pakistan based terrorists planning fresh attacks against India.

Talking to the media on the sidelines of a function at the Foreign Services Academy, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said India must share the information supporting Dr.Singh’s statement, in accordance with the Sharm-el-Sheikh agreement.

“We can’t take any such statement lightly. Pakistan wants peaceful and friendly relationship with all its neighbors and that’s why it wants that the misunderstandings should be ratified. So, let’s see what they respond to us,” The News quoted Qureshi, as saying.

Earlier, India’s Deputy High Commissioner, P. Kumaran, was summoned to the Foreign Office by Director-General of South Asia, Afrasiab Hashmi, on Monday.

Sources said Hashmi told Kumaran that both India and Pakistan had agreed to share information regarding terror threats in Sharm-el-Sheikh.

“In all sincerity, we would request India to share real time information that they have and for our part we stand ready to cooperate fully in pre-empting any act of terror,” Hashmi was quoted, as saying.

Hashmi said Islamabad needed credible information to crackdown on extremists planning attacks on India.

Foreign Office spokesperson Abdul Basit said Dr.Singh’s remarks ‘warrant serious and prompt attention.’

Speaking after inaugurating a Chief Ministers’ Conference on Internal Security in New Delhi, Dr. Singh, on Monday, had said there is credible information that terrorist groups based in Pakistan were planning to carry out fresh attacks in India and advocated the need for utmost vigilance.

Dr. Singh said : “We have put in place additional measures after the last year’s Mumbai terror attack. But there is need for continued vigilance. The area of operation of these terrorists today extends far beyond the confines of Jammu and Kashmir and covers all parts of our country.” (ANI)

Medical researchers face conflicts of interest

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Dr. Bruce Psaty of University of Washington in Seattle knows how easy it can be to fall under the spell of a friendly relationship with drug companies.

As an assistant professor, he published an article on using beta-blockers to treat high blood pressure that caught the attention of the pharmaceutical industry.

“My family and I were invited to a first-class resort, where I presented the results at a sponsored conference,” Psaty wrote in a commentary this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

He agreed to help develop a set of slides on beta-blockers and soon found himself suggesting that the drug company’s studies be featured, in part because he felt “a kind of social duty to reciprocate both the kindness and the investment made by the sponsor in the slide set.”

Psaty said his own story illustrates the subtleties of conflicts of interest. He is dissatisfied with the current debate among doctors, spurred by reports last year by Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley that a prominent Harvard psychiatrist failed to fully disclose hefty payments from drug companies.

“The debate has not been terribly fruitful,” Psaty said in a telephone interview. He said conflicts are sometimes hard to recognize, pointing to the work of Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist at Duke University in North Carolina.

Ariely’s research suggests that most people are comfortable with just a little bit of cheating, without considering themselves dishonest. He says subtle conflicts of interest often color decision making, yet most people — especially doctors — think they are immune.

HUMAN INSTINCT

“It’s human instinct,” Ariely said in a telephone interview. “If someone does something nice — gives you $5 million in a research grant — don’t you want to do something nice back to them?”

Ariely said return favors could come in the form of excluding a sicker patient from a clinical trial, which might affect the study results. “Not on purpose, but I’m trying to help my friends, just a little bit.”

Several states including Massachusetts, Minnesota and Vermont are tightening restrictions on gifts to doctors in the hopes of preventing such conflicts.

And a bill introduced by Senators Grassley and Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl would compel doctors to disclose their financial ties with drug companies or face stiff fines.

Psaty said such laws may curb some financial conflicts, but a bigger challenge will be addressing the influence drugmakers have over company-funded research supporting the safety and effectiveness of the drugs they make.

Psaty said he accepts no funding from drug companies for his research, but short of having all clinical trials funded with public money, he suggests doctors look for red flags in studies that might indicate bias.

“Was the question a good question? Did they set the study up right? Did they use the weakest possible comparator to make a drug look good in a trial?” he said.

And when a medical journal editorial disagrees with the primary interpretation of the author, “that is a potential marker of a study where there may been some bias from conflict of interest,” he said.

Hrithik, Suzanne Headed For Split?

*

Hrithik, Suzanne Headed For Split?Hrithik Roshan and life partner Suzanne are reportedly heading for a split.

The news came as a surprise to many, who considered their 8-year marriage to be quite solid. The couple has two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhan.

The reason for the split is Hrithik’s nearness and friendly relationship with Latino actress Barbara Mori, who is his co-star in his upcoming film ‘Kites’.

In last eight years of marriage, Bollywood’s loving real life pair has never been under media glare.

But now it seems that the couple has been experiencing a terrible phase with their relation that’s why Susanne moved to her parents’ house.

A source close to Roshan family said, “Hrithik and Suzanne have been having problems for a while now. Initially, everyone thought that Barbara was just another phase in his life. Nobody expected Hrithik to get so serious about her. Suzanne has been trying to come to terms with it. But when nothing worked, even her parents supported Susanne in her decision to leave him.”

Initially, Suzanne ignored all this, but Hrithik’s continuous mingling with Barbara pressured her to take a call to move in with her parents.

There are also negating reports, which said that Suzanne shifted to her parents’ house due to anti-termite treatment in their house that cannot take place while the kids are around.

It can be recalled that Suzanne was not seen with Hrithik during major events and award functions recently and even their appearance at Amrita Arora’s wedding made it seem that there was some tension.

To save his marriage life, the actor came back home from South Africa and drove straight to Susanne’s house to meet her.

Both the families have maintained that there is nothing wrong with Hrithik and Suzanne.

What is coming for one of Bollywood’s most loving and loveable couple? Only time will tell.
