New York, Sep.16 (ANI): Argentine tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro still can’t believe he has won this US Open, but now believes he is the biggest new star in tennis.

“It’s my best sensation,” he said. “Since my childhood I have dreamed of this trophy. I have realised my dream. It is an incredible moment. It’s amazing match, amazing people. Everything is perfect. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week I will be believing in this. Now, I can’t believe it,” The Mirror quoted Del Potro, as saying.

The 6 ft 6in Argentine caused a massive upset by beating a fustered Roger Federer in five thrilling sets in the US Open final.

The world No.1, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, was seeking his sixth successive title after winning 40 consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows.

But he was simply battered into submission by the 20-yearold with a murderous forehand making his first appearance in a Grand Slam final. Despite a horrible start, Del Potro triumphed 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 in four hours and six minutes – the longest US Open final for 20 years. (ANI)

Henry attacks French coach Domenech for boring training session

London, Sep 8 (ANI): French striker Thierry Henry has attacked national coach Raymond Domenech, and said that Les Bleus are bored in training and are lost on the pitch with “no style or guidelines”.

Henry, who is France’s record goal scorer with 49 goals in 112 appearances, launched his attack at the national team’s training camp last Friday.

“Coach, we have something to tell you, I am speaking in the name of the squad. We are getting bored during your training sessions. In 12 years with the French team, I have never been in such a situation,” he told the Le Parisien newspaper.

“We do not know how to play, where to be on the pitch, how to organise. We do not know what to do. We have no style, no guidelines. It is not working,” he added.

The French football federation declined to comment on the matter, The Mirror reported.

Coming from Henry, the comments are a serious blow to the authority of Domenech, who has enjoyed the full support of the French Football Federation despite tumbling out of the Euro2008 at the group stage. (ANI)

Western envoys expect run-off in Afghanistan election

Paris, Sep. 3 (ANI): Western envoys to Afghanistan have said that their respective governments should “be prepared for a run-off” in the Afghanistan presidential election if too many votes are ruled “irregular.”

If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off between the top two vote getters will be held. The latest results show that incumbent president Hamid Karzai has 47.3 percent of the vote with more than 60 percent of the ballots counted.

The meeting of German, French, British, UN, and US envoys to Afghanistan here was regarded as a show of unity and support in the midst of an Afghan mission seen as unpopular in Europe and dubbed by some US media as “Mr. Obama’s war.”

In European circles, the meeting was also seen as an effort to pressure Afghan President Karzai in the wake of some 1,000 complaints of ballot stuffing and fraud now under review, and to garner support for US efforts to target of irregular election behavior and corruption, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Hosted by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, the gathering also included British envoy Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Germany’s Bernd Mutzelburg, US envoy Richard Holbrooke, Karl Eide of the UN, and 22 other representatives.

The Afghanistan Election Commission is now going through nearly 1,000 complaints, of which 600 have been addressed, the envoys said – predicting they would finish the process by September 17. (ANI)

Smoking, overweighing up breast cancer risk

Washington, September 2 (ANI): A study conducted in Canada has reinforced the correlation between being overweight, smoking and breast cancer.

Published in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, the study is unique because it did not include subjects who were diagnosed for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, which predispose women to breast cancer.

The study entirely focused on lifestyle factors like smoking, exercise, nutrition and weight.

All women analysed in the study were direct ancestors of the first French colonists.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study conducted on a sample of women without BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, which are often found in French-Canadian women,” said lead researcher Vishnee Bissonauth, a graduate of the Universite de Montreal’s Department of Nutrition, and a researcher at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center.

The study found that weight gains after the age of 20 increased the risk of breast cancer.

Where the weight gain was more than 15.5 kilos, the risk was found to increase by an average of 68 percent.

Risk increases depending on how late in life the weight gain occurs, according to the study.

Women who gained more than 10 kilos after age 30, or more than 5.5 kilos after age 40, were found to be almost twice as likely to suffer from breast cancer as a those whose weight was stable.

The study showed that the risk tripled if the body mass index was at its maximum after age 50.

Smoking a pack a day for nine years was also found to increase breast cancer risks by 59 percent.

Though the impact of smoking seemed to decrease for menopausal women, it remained at 50 percent.

Bissonauth stressed the need for more research into the correlation between smoking and breast cancer.

The researchers revealed that moderate physical activity appeared to decrease cancer risks by 52 percent for pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women.

The correlation was also observed for women who did intense physical activity, but the difference was not significant, said the lead researcher.

That finding, said Bissonauth, may be down to the fact that women who did moderate physical activity were more likely to do it regularly, while those who did intense physical activity were likely to quit after a few weeks.

“Cancer is a complex disease and can be latent for several years. Therefore, it is important to work on the factors we can control and to lead a healthy lifestyle, which means watching one’s weight, avoid smoking and doing regular exercise,” said Bissonauth. (ANI)

Novelist Somerset Maugham exposed as cruel father in daughters’ lost tapes

London, August 30 (ANI): English novelist Somerset Maugham has been exposed as an unkind father who inflicted cruelty on his daughter, Liza, in newly discovered tapes.

The tapes that Liza made before her death in 1998 shed light on the harsh life she spent as a kid at the hands of her father and his gay lovers, including one incident in which her puppy was flung out of a moving car.

Liza’s tapes were intended for a memoir, but she never wrote one.

They remained hidden until transcripts were tracked down to the south of France by Selina Hastings, who has written Maugham’s first authorised biography.

The tapes paint a vivid picture of a childhood tormented by the dysfunctional relationship of her parents, Maugham and Syrie.

Although the couple married after Liza’s birth, Maugham remained very distant and was far more attached to two men, Gerald Haxton, whom he met while serving as a medic during the First World War, and Alan Searle, a later companion.

Searle even tried to supplant Liza in the author’s will by casting doubt on her legitimacy.

The tapes show Liza recalling how, as an eight-year-old, she went for a drive on the French Riviera, where her father spent much of his time with Haxton, a friend and her puppy.

“Suddenly, in an act of possibly drunken, seemingly inexplicable cruelty, Gerald at the wheel scooped up the dog and hurled it out of the window. I was hysterical and tried to throw myself out of the car after it, but was held back,” Times Online quoted her as saying in the tapes.

Miraculously, the dog survived, and turned up several months later.

Liza even reveals in the tapes that the “violent fights” between her parents sometimes left her feeling physically sick, and that she once covered her face in greasepaint to disguise her tears.

She admits: “I had quite the reverse of a happy childhood.” (ANI)

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson has finally been knocked from the top of the UK album chart.

Calvin Harris has leapt straight to the top of the UK album chart with new release ‘Ready For The Weekend, knocking Jackson’s album ‘The Essential’ from the perch, where it had been for seven weeks, reports the BBC.

Meanwhile, French DJ David Guetta has hit the top spot in the UK singles chart – his new track with Akon has shot to number one.

Guetta’s latest collaboration, ‘Sexy Bitch’, has reached the highest position.

UN appoints first Special Envoy for humanitarian affairs for Pakistan

United Nations, Aug.25 (ANI): UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed French UN ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert as the first Special Envoy in charge of humanitarian affairs for Pakistan.

Ban’s spokeswoman, Michele Montas, said Ripert would assist the Pakistan Government and the international community to respond to the current humanitarian crisis in the country.

“Ripert is to assist the government of Pakistan and the international community in responding to the present humanitarian recovery and reconstruction needs related to the country’s displacement crisis,” The Dawn quoted Montas, as saying.

Ripert, who will step down as UN ambassador at the end of this month, would be on the post for an initial period of six months.

Ripert, 56, has addressed humanitarian issues concerning several countries such as Myanmar, Darfur and Sri Lanka in the Security Council in the past.

According to an estimate more than 1.9 million people have been displaced in Pakistan following the military’s massive offensive against the Taliban and other extremist groups since mid April.

However, the UN has said that about two-third of the internally displaced people (IDP) have been able to return home after the offensive. (ANI)

London, July 28 (ANI): Actress Sandra Bullock wants to get a cosmetic surgery done to enhance her twin assets in order to look like a bimbo.

“I need surgery. I’m getting some boobs. I think that’s my problem. All my brains are in my butt, they’re not in my chest,” she said jokingly.

She said: “I want to be the bimbo, I want to be looked at as the bimbo, purely as a sexual object. I’ve been working for that for a very long time.”

The beauty also revealed that she needs to exercise regularly to remain in shape, but that does not stop her from eating fatty foods, she generally craves for, reports an entertainment news agency.

India, Pak foreign secretaries burn midnight oil to find common ground

Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt), July 15 (ANI): Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan – Shiv Shankar Menon and Salman Basheer – burnt the midnight oil on Tuesday to try to work out some kind of framework to lay the ground for the resumption of talks between the two countries.

Mandated by their respective Prime Ministers’ – Dr. Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani-to work out the modalities before the two heads of government meet on Thursday (July 16). Menon and Basheer interacted with each other without the assistance of aides late into the night.

The 90-minute meeting took place soon after the Indian delegation landed here from Paris after attending the French National Day celebrations there.

According to senior officials, the discussions between the two were good and detailed, and both agreed to meet again on Wednesday on the sidelines of the XVth Non-Aligned Summit that opens in this Red Sea resort today.

There were suggestions of some movement being made by both sides on the issue of terrorism and the possibility of a joint media appearance by the Prime Ministers’ of the two countries after they hear from their respective foreign secretaries.

Menon and Basheer are believed to have discussed the progress made by Islamabad in its probe into the 26/11 strikes and the steps taken to dismantle the terrorism infrastructure on its soil.

Menon and Basheer’s discussions are also believed to have covered Pakistan’s flip-flop over the arrest and release of Sayeed and the withdrawal of petitions challenging his release from the Supreme Court.

Ahead of the meeting between the two foreign secretaries and the two Prime Ministers’, Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has demanded a “visible response” and undertaking from Pakistan on bringing the perpetrators of Mumbai terror attacks to justice.

Prime Minister Gilani, who also arrived here on Tuesday, has said that he will approach his meeting with Dr. Singh with an “open heart and a positive mind.”

But he refused to comment on the Punjab provincial government’s decision to withdraw the petitions that challenged last month’s release from house arrest of Jamaat-ud Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammed Sayeed.

Tuesday night’s talks come four days after Pakistan handed over a fresh dossier on its probe into the Mumbai terror attacks to India.

The dossier, handed over to the Indian High Commission officials in Islamabad on Saturday, identifies 13 new suspects and gives an update on Pakistan’s investigations into the November 26 attacks, sources said.

After Prime Minister Singh’s disclosure on Saturday that ISI chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha had met some Indian High Commission officials in Islamabad, speculation are rife about the powerful spy agency’s influence on the talks process.

At present, the Indian side is unwilling to hazard a guess on whether the ISI will be a part of the talks.

There is, however, a hope on the Indian side about some kind of commitment being made by Pakistan to bring the Mumbai terror accused quickly to justice and to stop the use of Pakistani soil for terror acts against India.

The Pakistani side is of the view that the composite dialogue process should not be held hostage to one case. (ANI)

Prime Minister arrives in Paris

Paris, July 14 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Paris late on Monday night to participate in the National Day celebrations of the Republic of France.

Dr. Singh was received by French Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie and Ambassador of France to India Bonnafont. He was presented a Guard of Honour by the republican guards. National anthem of both the countries were also played.

Dr. Singh, who will be the Chief Guest of Honour at France’s National Day celebrations on Tuesday, said: “It’s a great honour and a great privilege for me to be in this beautiful country on France’s National Day.

I am very grateful to President Nicolas Sarkozy for giving me this rare honour. India and France are partners in development. We have very good relations with France. Its my ambition to give a further push to our strategic partnership.”

The Prime Minister is the first Indian leader to be bestowed this honour, as France does not have a tradition of inviting foreign heads of state to be chief guests at their Bastille Day or National Day celebrations.

This day commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, which was then seen as a symbol of a rising modern nation.

He will witness the contingent of 400 soldiers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air force march down the Champs-Elysees Avenue along with French infantry troops and motorised troops.

This is the for the first time that all the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force will taking part in the National Day celebrations of another country.

Among the 400 personnel, 300 would be part of the marching contingent, while the rest are from the respective bands.

A prominent feature of the band contingent will be the drummers and bagpipers who would be playing Indian martial music.

Inviting friendly nations to send their troops to participate the Bastille Day parade is a recent phenomenon.

In 2004, during the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, British troops comprising of Grenadier Guards, the Cavalry Regiment and Royal Marines and Royal Horse Artillery, led the parade in Paris for the first time.

The Indian armed forces participation will mark the commemoration of Indian army’s association with its French counterpart during the two World Wars.

The parade itself is a gala event held at what can best be described as the Rajpath of Paris. It begins from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde.

The number of contingents participating in the parade are not as many as seen in the Republic Day parade every January 26 in New Delhi.

While the loudest applause in Delhi is reserved for the ex-servicemen contingent, at the Bastille Day parade it is the fireservice men who get the loudest applause. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Israel says it is clueless about US deadline on settlement freeze

Jerusalem, July 12 (ANI): Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon has said the Benjamin Netanyahu government has no knowledge of any six-month deadline given by the US for freezing settlement construction in the West Bank.

“We have no knowledge of this whatsoever,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Ayalon, as saying.

Earlier a Lebanon daily had quoted French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, as saying that if Israel failed to stop all Jewish construction in the West Bank within six-months, the US would end support for peace talks.

Kouchner reportedly expressed his fear that Israel’s “stubbornness, intentional foot-dragging and acquiescence to the Israel lobby” would convince the Americans to pull out of peace discussions altogether.

The French foreign minister was in Beirut on Friday for talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Hizbullah legislator Nawaf Musawi.

The meeting with Musawi was aimed at facilitating a new coalition government led by Prime Minister-designate Sa’ad Hariri. Hariri’s government is likely to include Hizbullah representation, though the Shi’ite group was defeated in national parliamentary elections.

Israel is opposed to Hizbullah joining the government.

Netanyahu’s advisor Mark Regev responded to the Kouchner-Musawi meeting by warning that “if Hizbullah joins the Lebanese government, then Lebanon as a country will be responsible for any Hizbullah aggression against Israel. That has to be clear.”

Kouchner’s meeting with a Hizbullah lawmaker is the latest in a string of European meetings with the group, which the US and the European parliament have recognized as a terrorist organization.

“Hizbullah is part of the parties that participated in the recent parliamentary elections. It is natural to meet with its representatives,” Kouchner told reporters.

“Lebanon is a democratic country; democracy implies we meet with opposition figures as well.” (ANI)

Blair no more a favourite to become EU president

London, July 12 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s chances of becoming the new president of European Union have receded after he lost support among continental leaders.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was originally Blair’s key backer, is said to have “changed his mind”.

The new favourite is Spain’s charismatic socialist former prime minister Felipe Gonzales, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

European leaders are just beginning the complex horse-trading that will end in the appointment of a EU president and “high representative” – effectively the union’s foreign minister – once the Lisbon Treaty has been finally fully ratified.

That could come in October when Ireland stages its second referendum on the treaty following a “No” vote last year. Pundits expect a “Yes” vote this time round which would allow the treaty to pass into law among the EU’s 27 member states.

Blair, currently a Middle East peace envoy, remains 10 Downing Street’s choice.

A Foreign Office source told The Sunday Telegraph: “The new job is perfectly suited to a big personality like Tony Blair.”

Sarkozy is thought to have altered his stance – partly because of Blair’s perceived “failure” to achieve any change in the Middle East.

He has now switched support to Gonzales, 67, who has claimed that Europe has been “adrift for 20 years” and has become a mere follower of the United States.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose support Blair would need, never has been keen on Tony getting the job.

Sources claim there is little chance of a Briton being appointed as high representative either. (ANI)

Carla Bruni pledges £43,000 donation for L’Aquila quake hospital

London, July 11 (ANI): French First lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy gave glimpse of her philanthropist side as she pledged a personal donation of a whopping 43,000 pounds to a hospital treating survivors of earthquake- ravaged town of L’Aquila.

The former model-singer visited the earthquake-hit region a day after the wives of other leaders participating in the Group of Eight summit (G8) did, reports The Daily Express.

Dressed in a chic white suit, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy was greeted with cries of “Bella, Bella”, which means beautiful in Italian.

While an entourage of officials showed Bruni around, she said that the French government would contribute 2.7million pounds to help repair the dome of the Santa Maria du Suffragio church.

It was one of many monuments damaged in the April 6 quake, which killed nearly 300 people. (ANI)

‘Noisy’ stars mask planet’s true size

Sydney, July 10 (ANI): A German study has suggested that astronomers observing exoplanets around other stars may be underestimating their size because of active stars that add ‘noise’ to the observation of exoplanets using the transit method.

The transit method detects exoplanets as they pass in front of their parent star, reducing the amount of light reaching telescopes on, and orbiting, Earth.

Although the transit method isn’t the best method for detecting exoplanets, it provides a reliable estimate of its size and mass.

According to a report by ABC News, PhD student Stefan Czesla of the Hamburg Observatory in Germany, and colleagues, examined the giant exoplanet Corot-2b, using data from the French COROT satellite.

Discovered in 2007, Corot-2b is three and a half times the mass of Jupiter and orbits its star in just 1.74 days.

After closely examining the light curves recorded by COROT, which involved splitting them into their red, green and blue components, the researchers determined that the exoplanet is 3 percent bigger than previously thought.

Czelsa and colleagues believe this discrepancy may be true for other exoplanets around active stars.

“For planets found around active stars, the determination of their exact physical parameters is considerably complicated by stellar activity,” said Czesla.

“Bright and dark spots on the star can modify the transit light curves, something that isn’t accounted for in models currently used to calculate an exoplanet’s size,” he explained.

According to Dr John Greenhill of the University of Tasmania, the research also highlights the limitation of the transit method in detecting exoplanets, particularly those smaller than Jupiter.

“The two techniques that have netted the most planets, the radial velocity technique and the transit method, are limited by the noisiness of stars,” he said.

“In principle, it looks like we won’t be able to detect planets the size of Neptune and Uranus, and even Saturn using these methods because of that limit,” he added. (ANI)

France wants to expand G8 group

L’Aquila (Italy), July 10 (DPA) French President Nicolas Sarkozy is pushing for an expansion of the Group of Eight (G8).
“The G8 are no longer representative enough to manage the economic crisis,” Sarkozy said Thursday in L’Aquila, Italy, after the close of the second day of the summit of the world’s seven leading industrialised democracies plus Russia.

Major emerging economies including China and India must be brought in for permanent membership, Sarkozy said. France, which takes over the rotating G8 leadership in 2011, intends to create a G14 group, he said.

“It’s unavoidable,” he said. “We must include these countries in discussions from the very beginning. There’s no way around it.”

Sarkozy expressed support for similar efforts to expand the UN’ most important decision-making body, the Security Council. He wants the permanent members to include Germany, Japan and India.

The suggestions are not new. The current permanent members, who have the power of veto over any Security Council resolution, are the World War II victors: China, Russia, the US, France and Britain. Other large contributors to the UN including Japan and European countries are pushing for equal clout.

Sarkozy questioned the continuing dominant role of the US dollar as the global currency.

“The world cannot continue to use just one currency” as its common denominator, he said.

Most of international commerce is calculated in US dollars, and the dollar dominates international financial markets.

Iran frees a British embassy employee, another still held

London, July 6 (ANI): One of the last two British Embassy employees, held in Iran on the alleged charges of being behind last month’s post-election violence in the country, has been released.

The British Foreign Office on Monday confirmed the news, but added that embassy’s chief political analyst Hossein Rassam is still under detention. ine staff were originally arrested after the disputed re-election of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the street protests that followed. ritish Foreign Secretary David Miliband has launched a defence for Rassam, who is said by his lawyer to face trial for “acting against national security”.

“The allegations of improper conduct have absolutely no basis. (Rassam is) an honourable, patriotic Iranian, who has been working in a completely open and transparent way for the UK,” Miliband said.

“I think it is very, very important that we send a clear message that we are confident about the way he has been doing his job, that we are clear about our goal, which is his release, unharmed and also that there is unity across the international community,” he added.

Earlier, Tehran publicly accuses the UK of fomenting the unrest and a senior cleric said on Friday that some embassy staff, all Iranian, had “confessed” to playing a part and would face trial.

EU member states summoned the Iranian ambassadors to their countries to deliver co-ordinated warnings that the treatment of the British embassy staff was unacceptable.

The latest developments will be discussed today by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy at an Anglo-French summit in Evian-les-Bains.

President Sarkozy has expressed “total” solidarity with Britain and urged stronger sanction against Iran “so that Iranian leaders will really understand that the path that they have chosen will be a dead end”. (ANI)

Adebayor can leave the Gunners if he wants to says Wenger

London, July 4 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has assured that he wont stand in star striker Emmanuel Adebayor’s way if he wants to quit the Gunners.

Wenger also revealed that if Adebayor leaves Arsenal, he has a back up in the form of Marouane Chamakh, who currently plays for the French club, Bordeaux.

“If Adebayor does not want to stay, he will leave – although I think he will be still at Arsenal for this season,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Earlier, AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had revealed that he had talked to Arsenal about the possibility of signing Adebayor and, it appeared that the Serie A side had stepped up their interest for the Togo international.

Wenger, however, made it clear that Chamakh would only be signed in the event of a departure.

Wenger has been an open admirer of Chamakh’s talents. He has been on Arsenal’s radar ever since he exploded on the scene in France.

The French-Moroccan star has all the qualities that Wenger likes in his striker, 6ft 2in tall, strong in the air, good close control and a tireless worker. (ANI)

Defence forces all set to participate in National Day Parade of France

New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): A 400-strong contingent of the three wings of Indian defence forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) performed a full-dress rehearsal here today ahead of their visit to France to participate in a parade making National Day celebrations in France on July 14.

This is the for the first time that all the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force will be participating in the National Day celebrations of another country.

Among the 400 personnel, 300 would be part of the marching contingent, while the rest are from the respective bands.

A prominent feature of the band contingent will be the drummers and bagpipers who would be playing Indian martial music.

The members of this contingent have been practicing for the past fortnight at the India Gate.

“We have stood first in the Army Day parade, the reason we have been selected for the French national day parade. And as far this specific practice for French National Day celebration is concerned we have been practicing from past one month and from last 15 days we have been practicing at India Gate,” said Captain Vinay Khanduri of 22 Maratha Light Infantry.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has invited Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to be the chief guest at the French National Day celebrations. (ANI)
