When Bruni and Sarkozy kept a head of state waiting while they had sex

New York, May 8 (ANI): A new book has revealed that French First Lady Carla Bruni bragged to US First Lady Michelle Obama about how she and her husband French President Nicholas Sarkozy kept a head of state waiting while they had sex.

“Bruni wanted to know if, like the Sarkozys, Michelle and the President had ever kept anyone waiting that way,” the New York Daily News quoted Alter as writing.

“Michelle laughed nervously and said no,” he stated.

“The Promise”, a book by Newsweek senior editor Jonathan Alter, is due out from Simon & Schuster on May 18. (ANI)

Total public ban on burkha in France risks being ‘unconstitutional’

London, Mar 31 (ANI): France’s top administrative body has warned President Nicolas Sarkozy’s government that a total public ban on the burkha, the full Islamic veil, risks being found to be unconstitutional.

However, a ban on face-covering garments could apply in certain “high risk” zones for security reasons, it found.

The Council of State said a total public ban on the burkha or niqab could well violate the French constitution and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, The Telegraph reports.

“There appears … to be no legally unchallengeable justification for carrying out such a ban,” it said.

Moreover, a ban limited to the full veil could be viewed as discriminatory and “tricky to put into practice,” it went on to say, in particular as the majority of women who wear it do so of their own free will.

The conclusions sparked anger among Right-wing backers of a full ban from President Sarkozy’s UMP party.

The French president has stepped up efforts to ban face-covering veils since declaring them “not welcome” in a speech last June.

A parliamentary commission examined the issue for six months last year before making 15 recommendations in a report in January. It stopped short of calling for a full ban. (ANI)

Nicolas Sarkozy carries lectern to stand tall during keynote speech!

London, March 31 (ANI): Nicolas Sarkozy has finally found a way to stand tall – the 5ft 5in French President carried a custom-built wooden stand with him as he flew to the US to make a keynote speech.

The lectern was specially designed to make Sarkozy “look authoritative and statesman-like” when he spoke before academics and students at Columbia University, New York.

“The President wanted to make sure that he was completely comfortable when making this important speech, and that was the reason for bringing his own lectern,” the Daily Express quoted a French diplomatic source, as saying.

Sarkozy is notoriously famous for being sensitive about his height.

In 2009 he attracted much media attention when he used a six-inch footstool to stand taller than American President Barack Obama, 6ft2in, and Britain’s Premier Gordon Brown, 5ft11in, during D-Day commemorations in Normandy. (ANI)

France wants to expand G8 group

L’Aquila (Italy), July 10 (DPA) French President Nicolas Sarkozy is pushing for an expansion of the Group of Eight (G8).
“The G8 are no longer representative enough to manage the economic crisis,” Sarkozy said Thursday in L’Aquila, Italy, after the close of the second day of the summit of the world’s seven leading industrialised democracies plus Russia.

Major emerging economies including China and India must be brought in for permanent membership, Sarkozy said. France, which takes over the rotating G8 leadership in 2011, intends to create a G14 group, he said.

“It’s unavoidable,” he said. “We must include these countries in discussions from the very beginning. There’s no way around it.”

Sarkozy expressed support for similar efforts to expand the UN’ most important decision-making body, the Security Council. He wants the permanent members to include Germany, Japan and India.

The suggestions are not new. The current permanent members, who have the power of veto over any Security Council resolution, are the World War II victors: China, Russia, the US, France and Britain. Other large contributors to the UN including Japan and European countries are pushing for equal clout.

Sarkozy questioned the continuing dominant role of the US dollar as the global currency.

“The world cannot continue to use just one currency” as its common denominator, he said.

Most of international commerce is calculated in US dollars, and the dollar dominates international financial markets.

D-Day: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Michelle Obama – the first ladies of fashion

D-Day: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Michelle Obama - the first ladies of fashionPerhaps the colour was too light for the occasion, but Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy brought a touch of style to the D-Day landings commerations, writes Sarah Mower.

Never mind that there was a French military band playing in the background, for a moment the D-Day images that the cameras were capturing in Caen became surreally interchangeable with shots from a catwalk show.

Two tall women, one of them a model, were swinging in step in classic “paired” runway formation. Both were almost identically dressed in knee-length cream with belts, bare legs and heels. They could almost have been modelling some designers’ collection named “First Lady Spring 2009”.

Undoubtedly the choice of colour worn by Mrs Obama and Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was a coincidence. Hell would surely freeze before two such self-confident dressers would confer over what to wear.

Certainly, there will be some questions asked over whether a light, summery colour is disrespectful on a sombre day of remembrance.

Sarah Brown stayed with the tradition of sober attire, safely putting her out of the way of fashion attention.

As for the other two, their

Caen encounter was the sequel to their first-round meeting at the G8 in Strasbourg, where — to either their amusement or embarrassment — both women turned up wearing coats with large pussycat bow necklines.

On that occasion, the outcome may not necessarily have been to Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy’s liking.

Mrs Obama, the international new girl, was wearing a cabbage-rose print outfit from the American designer Thakoon and won rave reviews.

By contrast, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy stuck to the demure greys and flat shoes she had so far judged necessary to counterbalance her colourful past and shorter husband. Standing next to Mrs Obama, she found the American had a two-inch advantage on her. So at this fashion face-off, it’s fascinating to see how things have changed.

The French president’s wife chose Dior again, but dropped the grey in favour of a youthfully chic and flattering cap-sleeved ivory satin sheath with a gathered neckline – just the sort of arm-revealing dress Michelle Obama has made her signature.

However, the American First Lady chose to relinquish what her husband jokingly called her “right to bare arms” for the day, choosing to put a coat by Narcisco Rodriguez over a dress, with a belt by Givenchy.

The most significant detail of all, however, is found in the two pairs of shoes on the Caen red carpet. Mrs Obama wore silver Jimmy Choos. But for the first time since marrying, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was seen wearing heels.

As all women know, when preparing to meet one’s fashion nemesis, your diminutive husband’s sensitivities just have to take second place.

Carla Bruni strokes Nicolas Sarkozy’s bum in public

London, May 20 (ANI): French First Lady Carla Bruni left hubby Nicolas Sarkozy red faced when she groped his backside during a press conference.

The former model and singer was being filmed in the Elysee Palace for a magazine when the President walked in, reports the Mirror.

Soon afterwards, Bruni was stroking Sarkozy’s backside, pecking his cheek, and even whispering in his ear: “Bon courage, chou chou.”

“Chou” is the French for cabbage, and the phrase used by young lovers means: “Be brave, my little darling.”

The 41-year-old beauty was seen constantly staring the French President during the Paris interview, but the Sarkozy, 54, tried to discourage her. (ANI)

US approves 1.9 billion dollar aid for Pakistan: Babar

Islamabad, May 19 (ANI): The US House of Representatives has approved 1.9 billion dollar in aid for Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

Zardari returned to Islamabad on Monday after concluding an official visit to Libya, the UK, the US and France.

“The tour also saw the UK committing 640 million pound over the next four years and France offering civil nuclear technology to Pakistan after decades of embargo in addition to specific aid for the immediate rehabilitation of IDPs and broadening of the partnership to fight the scourge of extremism and militancy,” Babar said.

He said wide-ranging measures that were announced during the visit would strengthen Pakistan’s economy and garner international support to the country.

Babar said the approval of 1.9 billion dollar was in addition to assistance the Obama Administration had requested for Pakistan, the Daily Times reported.

“No less significant was the French President’s offer of a wide ranging civil nuclear deal to Pakistan to help it overcome its energy crisis to make the industries run and create jobs and opportunities,” the spokesman said.

Babar said Zardari also flew to New York from Washington to urge the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a global appeal to help Pakistan deal with the ‘human catastrophe’ resulting from the action against the Taliban in Swat, a request which the UN chief accepted. (ANI)

Sarkozy, Bruni may move into Jagger’s building in Paris

London, May 14 (ANI): Mick Jagger may soon have a new neighbour in his luxurious Paris pad: ex-lover Carla Bruni along with Nicolas Sarkozy.

It has been reported that the French President and wife are poised to buy a 3.5million pound “love nest” in Paris.

Ex-model Carla, 41, has viewed the three-storey Left Bank apartment where fashion guru Yves St Laurent, a pal, lived until his death last year, reports The Telegraph.

Sir Mick has long owned a flat two floors up from the late fashion designer’s vast apartment at 55 Rue de Babylone, the Times reported.

A source revealed that Carla and Sarkozy want a little love nest where they can get away from the hurly-burly of the Elysée Palace, and therefore, they are looking for a cozy house. (ANI)

Three of five French voters unhappy with President Sarkozy’s performance

Paris, May 4 (ANI): Nearly two-thirds of French voters are disappointed by President Nicolas Sarkozy’s performance since his election two years ago, according to a new poll.
According to a Metro newspaper commissioned survey, 65 per cent of the respondents said they were disappointed with Sarkozy’s performance, 24 per cent said they were satisfied and 11 per cent said they had no opinion.

Sixty-three per cent viewed Sarkozy’s overall record in office as negative while just 28 per cent regarded his record as positive.
The figures roughly correspond to those garnered by Sarkozy’s predecessor Jacques Chirac at the same stage in his mandate, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Dalai Lama calls US ‘Champion of Freedom’

Santa Barbara (California, US), Apr.25 (ANI): Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has praised American democracy and thinks President Obama is realistic and open.

In an exclusive interview with FOX News during his five-city tour of the United States, the Dalai Lama said: “I think basically America is a champion of freedom, democracy, liberty.”
“Occasionally the administration neglects these principles, but overall, I think these principles are very much alive in this country,” he added.

On President Obama, he said: “He seems, I think, very realistic, very open. He always reaches out. That’s, I think, wonderful. Very good.”

The Dalai Lama has visited the U.S. many times and met with the last three U.S. presidents but always in an unofficial capacity – never in the Oval Office.

But the Dalai Lama said official or unofficial doesn’t matter to him.

“In what form, I don’t care. Important thing is, meet. Talk. That’s important,” he said.

The possibility of a meeting comes amid continuing warnings from China, including as recently as Thursday, suggesting that the Obama administration should not meet with the exiled Tibetan leader, whom China has described as a separatist.

“That’s quite routine. Nothing special,” laughed the Dalai Lama, who has not been back to his native Tibet since he fled in 1959, nine years after Chinese troops seized control of the region.

As for threats from China, the spiritual leader pointed out that past warnings proved to have no teeth.

“Look, the meeting with the German Chancellor, the Chinese government was furious, and some programs were cancelled. Then meeting with French president, also similar. Then after a few months, nothing happened,” he said.

On the global economic downturn, he said there is a positive side – if one is willing to recognize it.

“I think the global economic crisis, in a way, is good, to teach people who usually see their luxurious way of life. Now, I think it reminds people there are limitations. It’s unrealistic to always expect grow, grow, grow, grow,” he said. (ANI)

G-20 heads of state picture looks like a ‘Hindu Undivided’ family

London, Apr 2 (ANI): The ‘family picture’ of the 22 heads of state and institutions that is a photo opportunity usually, is an occasion to show unity and bonhomie. But the few minutes that the leaders stood together for a photograph seemed more like a forced exercise in congeniality. Somewhat similar to a wedding picture of families…a HUF (Hindu Undivided Family…that is all but divided for property purposes).

German Chancellor Angela Merkel pursed her lips tight, while French President Nocholas Sarkozy looked anything but happy (was he missing his wife Carla Bruni who didn’t come…and why didn’t she by the way…did she not want to steal Michelle Obama’s thunder?).

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh didn’t smile even once. Even Obama was not beaming….no Colgate moment here.

But it wasn’t a total disaster like in November in Washington D C, when the then President George Bush walked across a line of world leaders without shaking a hand or being asked to shake their hands. CNN’s Rick Sanchez reporting on the event said that Bush “looked like the most unpopular kid in high school that nobody liked.”

Obama in contrast has come across as warm and friendly without being overtly chummy. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and he met briefly for the first time last night at the Queen’s reception.

President Obama called out to him and then walked up to the septuagenarian respectfully and spoke to him for almost ten minutes. The conversation was warm and friendly said one delegate ho was present at the reception. This was the first face-to-face interaction between both leaders. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Differences between G-20 leaders overstated: Obama

London, Apr.1 (ANI): Barack Obama says the differences in opinion between world leaders attending G20 have been “vastly overstated”.

At a joint news conference with the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, he said: “I am absolutely confident that this meeting will reflect enormous consensus about the need to work in concert to deal with these problems I think that the separation between the various parties involved has been vastly overstated.”

It follows comments from the French President that he is unhappy with the measures “on the table” for the summit.

Sarkozy has put the cat among the pigeons

Nicolas Sarkozy has said he will “walk away” from the meeting if he cannot get an agreement on international financial regulation.

But President Obama said: “I understand that when you have a bunch of heads of state talking, it is not usually that interesting, the communiques are written in dry language, and so there is a great desire to inject some conflict into the occasion.

“But the truth of the matter is, I think that there has been an extraordinary convergence of opinion.”

Gordon Brown also played down the differences.

“Let me add that I am confident that Nicolas Sarkozy were not only be here for the first dinner but will still be sitting as we complete our dinner this evening,” he said.

“We are within a few hours of agreeing a global plan for economic recovery and reform,” he added.

Asked if he was disappointed that other countries were less than enthusiastic about another fiscal stimulus, President Obama said America alone “could not be the engine” to drive the world’s economic recovery.

“Everybody is going to have to pick up the pace,” he added.

“I think that there is a recognition based on the conversations I have had with leaders around the world that that is important,” Sky News quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Sarkozy’s mantra for boundless energy – alternative therapist?

London, Jan 11 (ANI): The secret to Nicolas Sarkozy’s boundless energy has been unlocked – all thanks to a French author who claims that the “hyper-président” secretly consults a specialist in alternative medicine.

In his new book, Patrice Machuret, a political journalist and author of a book on Sarkozy published last week, the alternative medicine specialist massages French President’s back and sends him “positive energy waves”.

Sarkozy’s tirelessness has long been a subject of speculation. In political circles he is regularly accused of being “on something”, with theories ranging from amphetamines to cocaine, reports Times Online.

In reality, however, he is addicted only to chocolate and the secret of his dynamism is not drugs but a longhaired “etiopath” called Jean-Paul Moureau, according to Machuret.

“Moureau the guru”, as patients call him, has been treating Sarkozy for 15 years with his special technique of “manual therapy”.

According to the author, the two have developed a close relationship and Moureau has become a sort of unofficial adviser.

Since Sarkozy’s election as president in May 2007, he, who used to turn up at Moureau’s practice in the chic 16th arrondissement, has arranged for visits in the Elysée Palace at least once a week. (ANI)
