Pak civilian arrested in Chile denies illegal possession of explosives

Santiago, May 20 (ANI): Saifur Rehman Khan, the Pakistani civilian who was detained after traces of explosives were detected on him at the US Embassy in Chile, has denied all charges being labelled against him.

Saifur, who was released after charges of illegal possession of explosives were labelled against him, appealed to the US authorities to trust him, saying he was not involved in any wrongdoing.

Hitler’s voting slip to be auctioned

London, May 6 (ANI): A voting slip with a cross by Adolf Hitler’s name is to be auctioned in the weeks after Britain goes to the polls. The slip is from the 1932 German election.

According to The Telegraph, the card also carries names of the Führer’s closest political aides, including Goring, Goebbels and Hess.

It states at the top of the card “Parliament for Freedom and Peace”, and states the constituency is Hessen Nassau.

Hitler, who started as a mere candidate, went on to become a democratically elected politician of the Nazi party – ‘Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei’ as well as a Chancellor within 12 months. (ANI)

Safety fears take a toll on kids’ freedom

London, Apr 28 (ANI): With parents fearing more about their kids’ security, the children are deprived of freedom their parents had when they were young, a survey revealed.

The survey by children”s safety charity LV=Streetwise, of more than 6,000 adults and 1,000 children, showed huge restrictions on the lives of youngsters because of parents” growing fears and anxieties.

The study found that one in four under-15s were not allowed to stay the night at a friend”s house and almost two-thirds were told not to use public transport.

Most parents said they thought the world was a more dangerous place than when they were growing up, with some of them banning from using public transport or sleeping over when they were young.

Children now have to wait two years longer to enjoy the kind of freedom their parents had when they were young, the report said.

Parents” main worries include “stranger danger”, bullying, mugging and road hazards, the study revealed.

On average, children now walk to school on their own by the age of 11, use public transport by themselves at 12 and babysit a brother or sister at 14, all two years later than their parents.

“It”s difficult for parents to know when is the right time to step back and allow children to experience things on their own, and this report shows just how much things have changed over the last generation,” the Mirror quoted Mike Rogers, group chief executive of insurance firm LV=, as saying.

“Parents have a key role in helping their children to become more risk-aware and better at spotting everyday dangers in the world around them,” he added. (ANI)

Jack Tweed ‘to celebrate freedom with orgy of booze and sex in Spain’

London, April 28 (ANI): After being cleared of rape, Jack Tweed is planning to celebrate his freedom with an orgy of booze and sex in Spain.

Jack says he wants to lead a normal life and party hard.

“I just want to lead a normal life. I want to graft, earn some money and have a holiday,” said Jack.

Jack, 22, and his mates will be joined by a group of sexy girls, led by model Lauren Pope, 26, reports The Daily Star.

His friends claim that he is desperate to go on a holiday for a trip after being stuck in the UK for the past two years as he was jailed in September 2008 for attacking a 16-year-old boy with a golf club.

Jack was recently accused of raping a 19-year-old student along with one of his friend but was released by jury. (ANI)

Polanski’s lawyer orders Swiss authorities to release the director

London, April 26 (ANI): Film director Roman Polanski’s lawyer has ordered the Swiss authorities to release the embattled director from house arrest in the country.

Polanski, 76, has been confined to his Swiss estate since December (09) following his September (09) arrest in Zurich stemming from a three-decade old sex crime in America.

And the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office wants Polanski to return to California to be sentenced for having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl at a party in 1977.

L.A. officials on April 22 ruled that Polanski cannot be sentenced in absentia, but his lawyer Herve Temime is now insisting Swiss officials release the Oscar winner from house arrest immediately.

“It is up to the Swiss authorities to tell the truth and give back Roman Polanski his freedom once and for all, regardless of the roar and unbearable pressure of an ill-informed public,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

In February (10), Swiss authorities stated they would not make a decision on the extradition of Polanski to the U.S. until all avenues of appeal are exhausted. (ANI)

PCB chief Butt must stop his ‘one man show’: Sohail

Karachi, Apr.21 (ANI): Criticising Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt for running a ‘one man show’ in the board, former opening batsman Aamir Sohail has asked the PCB boss to put an end to the practice.

Referring to the recent controversy surrounding choosing a replacement for injured all-rounder Yasir Aarafat, Sohail said it was baffling to see Butt making all decisions by himself without consulting either the chief selector Mohsin Khan, coach Waqar Younis or captain Shahid Afridi.

“I must say that this one-man show will have to be stopped. It’s the chief selector’s job to pick players in consultation with the captain and coach. But unfortunately it is the PCB who is calling all the shots,” The News quoted Sohail, as saying.

“If you have to make all the decision then why have you appointed these people. There should be distribution of power otherwise we can’t have any improvement in our cricket,” he added.

Sohail called Butt ‘adamant’, and said that there is no need for the chief selector and the coach, if decisions are to be made by the PCB chief himself.

“If you don’t want the chief selector and coach to do their jobs then why are you throwing away money by paying them salaries? It will be better for Pakistan cricket if all these players are fired because it will help the PCB chairman in his drive to cut down costs,” said Sohail, who served as Director Game Development during Butt’s tenure for some time, but resigned from the post saying he was not allowed enough freedom to carry out his work properly.(ANI)

Drink driving father a risk to the community, court told

A man who was allegedly caught driving drunk with his one-year-old son in the car has been remanded in custody by a Sydney court.

Police say Ngai Kerry was four times over the limit when he drove through Lalor Park last night with his boy.

They say he stopped when police pulled him over but continued driving before officers could talk to him.

It is alleged the 24-year-old then knocked down a set of traffic lights, narrowly avoiding a crash with an oncoming car.

His car became airborne and crashed into two townhouses, causing significant damage.

Kerry was found nursing his baby in the back yard of one of the houses.

His lawyer applied for bail saying his client needs his freedom to arrange his defence case and because he is the primary source of income for his wife and child.

But the prosecutor said Kerry is a risk to the community, has never held a licence and has been caught driving before.

The court heard that in March, Kerry failed to appear in court for a driving offence.

In papers tendered to the court, police expressed their shock that no-one was hurt in the crash.

They said Kerry has shown no remorse.

The magistrate refused bail and the matter returns to court next week.

Kashmir Bar Association members protest against police attack in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 30 (ANI): Members of the Kashmir Bar Association took out a protest march through the streets of Srinagar on Monday in protest against an alleged police attack on their Vice President, Eijaz Ahmad Bedar.

The rally commenced from the High Court and ended at Regal Chowk in Srinagar.
Condemning the attack by the police on a senior functionary of the bar, the protesting lawyers resorted to the chanting pro-freedom and anti India slogans.

Later, Mian Qayoom, the President of the Kashmir Bar Association, termed the attack an act of state terrorism.

“We want to tell them that they can”t pressurise Kashmir public all the time like this. We want that all people should condemn this incident. Police officials roam freely and say that there is nobody who can say a word to them as they pay 7,000 rupees every week to their superiors. Then you can very well imagine what police is doing in Kashmir,” said Qayoom.

Qayoon claimed that the attack was carried out at the behest of the Senior Superintendent of Police, (SSP) (Srinagar) at Batmaloo.

He accused the police of misusing certain prevailing regulations under the Jammu and Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act. (ANI)

Ferry launched despite resort uncertainty

A Capricorn Coast tourist operator has launched a new ferry, despite the undecided future of Great Keppel Island’s resort.

The 29-metre catamaran Freedom Monarch has been launched at Rosslyn Bay Harbour. The 350-seat ferry will operate trips to Great Keppel Island, as well as day cruises.

Max Allen from Freedom Fast Cats says he is still hopeful that plans for a new resort at Great Keppel Island will be announced soon.

But he says that is not crucial to the success of his operation.

“The resort would obviously make success go [more] rapidly than it is, but with our company, the way we’ve been operating, it has been increasing our day cruises all the time,” he said.

“Great Keppel Island will be the icing on the cake if we can get it, it will just improve the whole coast.”

Capricorn Tourism believes new developments such as a larger ferry will help attract more visitors to the region.

Chief executive Mary Carroll says she hopes an announcement will be made soon for revised plans for a new resort on Great Keppel Island, and that will help to showcase the Capricorn Coast’s natural attractions.

“Oh look I’ve always said that the reefs off the Capricorn Coast is even better than a lot of the reef in other parts of the state,” she said.

“It’s just the fact that we haven’t had the volume of resorts like other areas such as the Whitsundays have got to put the money into marketing our natural attributes.”

Elton John tells Whoopi Goldberg ‘Next Fall’ reflects his coming out struggle

London, Mar 13 (ANI): Sir Elton John has revealed on Whoopi Goldberg’s chat show The View that his new play, ‘Next Fall’, reflects some of the struggles he had coming out as gay.

John, 62, produced the play, which is a bittersweet comedy that opened on Broadway on March 12, with his partner David Furnish.

It was written by Geoffrey Nauffts, and tells the story of a gay couple, one of whom hasn’t come out as gay to his parents and struggles with the conflict with his religion.

John told Goldberg, 54, that he could totally identify with the troubled protagonist.

“I came out…at the height of my career and, yeah, it maybe hurt me a little bit but not that much and it gave me the freedom to be who I was for the rest of my life and I didn’t have to live my life in secret,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“I’m proud of who I am. The worst thing is to just hide and be afraid of who you are.

“I didn’t really want people to know. I didn’t have the courage in my convictions and I think as soon as I did that – when I was asked a simple question in a magazine and I said ‘yes’ – my life transformed itself.

“I don’t have any secrets now. I know it is very difficult for lots of people in different jobs but the best thing I ever did was be true to myself,” he added. (ANI)

Anasta confident of facing Rabbitohs

Sydney Roosters captain Braith Anasta says he has overcome an ankle injury and will lead his side out for their NRL opening round clash with South Sydney on Sunday.

Anasta has battled a fractured ankle he suffered in June last year and missed all the Roosters’ preseason trials.

“It’s going really well, I really tested it in the last few weeks and I’m pretty much certain I’ll be playing this week,” Anasta said.

“It’s been a long process, it’s been quite a few months and I pretty much had the freedom of not playing the trials and just getting prepared for the first game, which was the goal.”

Anasta says Roosters coach Brian Smith will give him until match day to confirm he will take the field.

“Unless there’s a mishap, I’ll pretty much be playing and he’ll give me right until game day,” he said.

Anasta’s return will be a welcome boost for the young Roosters side at the Olympic stadium, as they take on highly-rated traditional rivals the Rabbitohs.

UK commander says dialogue with Taliban insurgents necessary to end Afghan war

Kabul, Sep 18(ANI): In an ambitious aim to help bring an end to the eight-year war in Afghanistan by persuading the Taliban to lay down their arms, British Army Lt. Gen Sir Graeme Lamb said that many Taliban activists have “done nothing wrong”, rather they have taken to arms as “they have anger and grievances, which have not been addressed”.

While addressing a gathering at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) headquarters in Kabul, Lamb insisted that a dialogue with the Taliban insurgents is necessary to end the cold war.

“We need to take a good look at the people we consider to be our enemies. A lot of young men fighting us have not done anything wrong. They have anger and grievances, which have not been addressed. The better life they expected has not materialized, these are the people we must talk to, but we must make sure we have something to offer them,” The Independent quoted Lamb, as saying.

Lamb further highlighted that the NATO and British forces where not in Afghanistan to give up people’s freedom, and said: “What we do have to do is combine new culture and old culture and work out something that works. We will be listening to what our Afghan colleagues say. I will work very closely with them and let them set conditions.”

Lamb also said that their primary motive is to bring those Afghanistan citizens back into the society, who have been forced out of their society for no fault of their own.

“Judge us by not just what we say, the promises we make, but what we do, what we deliver at the end,” Lamb said. (ANI)

Climate change will lead to less ultraviolet radiation over northern high latitudes

Imphal, Sep.16 (ANI): “Move onward with the Lord within your heart and with the footprints of your ancestors in your eyes’ is the greatest moral teaching from Heigru Hidongba ceremony held every year in Manipur.

Heigru Hidongba, a socio-religious ceremony, to exhibit the firm devotion of the descendants of the Great Grand Mantri Anandashai of Lord Bejoy Govindajee was recently held in Imphal.

Devotees brought offerings of Heigru (Amla) fruit to the almighty on the 11th day of Langban Manipuri month which coincides with September to bring prosperity to the community.

During this festival a special boat race ‘Hiyang Tanaba’ is held in the sacred Thangapat Moat of Sagolband, Bejoy Govinda in Imphal amidst singing of devotional songs and a lot of clamour.

It attracted a huge number of spectators on this occasion. “We have organized the ceremony so that we can come and pray together so that the ills of the society will be removed and also for peace to be restored in our land that is filled with violence. In other places, it is celebrated anytime as a festival but we celebrate it as it is our custom,” said Boshana, organiser of the Heigru Hidongba festival.

“This is the 231st Heigru Hidongba Festival. The main theme of the festival is about preserving the age old traditional beliefs and customs of our culture,” said Magochandra, a local resident.

Devotees converged at the Bijoygobinda Moat at Sagoband to witness the ceremony symbolising the unity, which was once deeply rooted amongst the Manipuris’ ancestors and for their struggle for peace and freedom.

Devotees, today, believe that the ceremony brings prosperity to the State and overcomes ills of the society. (ANI)

Miscreants attacks church in Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 10 (ANI): Some unidentified miscreants attacked the St. Francis de Sales Church in Hebbagudi on Hosur road in the outskirts of Bangalore, breaking over 10 window glasses and destroying the statues of Mother Mary and Jesus Christ in the early hours of Thursday.

According to sources, about 25 miscreants forcefully entered the St. Francis Church that was spread over two acres of land, at around 3.a.m.

Thousands of people gathered in the church premises after learning about the incident.

“We want justice from the government and the concerned authorities, so that no Indian citizen can hound the freedom to practice one’s own religion and everybody can live safely and securely. We want the security. These unwanted elements should not go on spoiling the peace and security of Indian citizens,” said Father Aronnis, Chief Priest of St. Francis De Sales Church.

The protesters also stalled the traffic on Hosur – Bangalore high way. After the mediation of Superintendent of Police (Bangalore Rural) Dr. Mahesh, and the BJP MLA of Anekal constituency, Narayanswamy, the agitators allowed the traffic to flow.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chief R.V.Deshpande critisied the state government for failing to give protection to minority community and demanded for an investigation by the Cops of Detectives (CoD) over the incident.

The Bangalore Rural Police have registered a case based on the complaint given by the church authorities and conducting the investigations (ANI)

Broad not keen on taking Flintoff’s place in Test team

London, Sep 8 (ANI): England’s Ashes hero Stuart Broad doesn’t want to replicate all rounder Andrew Flintoff in his life and is not even that keen on taking Flintoff’s place at No.7 in the Test team.

“No one can replace Fred. It is important that I focus on my qualities and don’t try to be someone I’m not,” Broad said.

Despite scoring five fifties in his 22-Test career, two of them in the Ashes, and having a respectable batting average of 31, Broad plays down that side of his game.

“My aim is to become a good No 8. If the top six build a platform that allows me and Graeme Swann to come and play with freedom as we did at the Oval. I just want to be awkward to bowl at,” The Times quoted Broad, as saying.

Flintoff has said that Broad’s batting is good enough to play as a specialist batsman and Geoff Boycott, praising the straight play of Broad, compared him to a young Garry Sobers, saying that Broad could make the same journey as Sobers from tailender.

“I don’t think I can average 40 in Test cricket. That’s a huge ask, even for recognised batsmen,” Broad said.

The modest Nottinghamshire all-rounder really wants is to spend a night in his own bed and maybe hang a shelf or two.

“I bought a house six months ago and I’ve only spent about 20 nights there. When we have finished with these one-day games and the Champions Trophy, all I’m looking forward to is 2-3 weeks at home and a bit of decorating before we go to South Africa.”

Andrew Flintoff is reportedly having six feet mosaics of the Ashes urn installed in the swimming pools, but Broad’s ambition extends no farther than getting house painted.

Nor does he plan to decorate his body, Flintoff-style. “My mum would never let me in the house again if I had a tattoo,” he said. (ANI)
