“CSI” showrunners renew deals

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Two “CSI” franchise showrunners have renewed their deals, each signing long-term production agreements with CBS TV Studios.

“CSI” chief Carol Mendelsohn and her “CSI: Miami” counterpart Ann Donahue have re-upped for four more years.

Mendelsohn’s contract includes running both “CSI” and the upcoming CBS legal drama “The Defenders,” which will air on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. this fall.

A four-year contract is considered a longer-than-usual agreement for a showrunner deal, but “CSI” and its spinoff are considered staples of the network’s lineup. This fall, “CSI” will continue to anchor the network’s Thursday night, with star Laurence Fishburne recently renewing his agreement for another season. “Miami” will shift from its Monday perch to Sundays.

Moreover, “CSI” is sold in more than 200 territories and is considered the most popular drama series in the world, according to a Eurodata TV Worldwide survey.

Shyamalan shopping new movie with big stars

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – As he puts the finishing touches on the big-budget fantasy spectacle “The Last Airbender,” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is quietly circulating a new script.

Film

No details are known about the project, but it comes with some major acting talent: Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bruce Willis are loosely attached to star in the film.

Shyamalan is famously secretive, and this project is no exception: Only top studio execs have read the script, and they were required to allow a Shyamalan assistant to supervise the process. When the executives finished reading, the assistant took the script back and left.

It’s a practice that is consistent with previous Shyamalan script sales. But while there was a time when an original Shyamalan project — with their trademarked twists and reveals — caused great ripples throughout Hollywood, in recent years the filmmaker’s box office and critical clout have diminished.

“Airbender,” which is getting the full Paramount marketing push for a July 1 release, could bring some of that heat back, but the project is the first for Shyamalan based on material that he didn’t originate. It’s also his first attempt at a special effects-driven franchise-starter.

Still, with Cooper, Paltrow and Willis attached (the latter starred in the filmmaker’s breakthrough “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable”), Shyamalan can still lure talent.

Deshpande denies keeping IPL in dark about ”individual bid”

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) The twists and turns in the Pune bid row continued today with City Corporation MD Aniruddh Deshpande refuting allegations that he kept the IPL in dark about his “individual bid” for the franchise but conceded that the company”s name was used in his bid documents. Deshpande”s denial comes in the wake of media reports that the Pune-based Real Estate firm City Corporation had authorised him to bid on the company”s behalf in a January board meeting.

The firm, in which Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar”s family has 16 per cent equity, had earlier denied being part of the bid but BCCI President Shashank Manohar yesterday rejected its claim, saying the failed bid came in the company”s name. Deshpande said he had told the IPL that he would float a new company after winning the bid, which was eventually clinched by the Sahara Group.

Deshpande said the City Corporation allowed him to use the company”s name on the documents as very little time was left for the bids to open. “All the documents were in the company”s name and a letter to that effect was also submitted to the IPL Governing Council on March 21 before the bid.

I told them that the stakeholders will change if we are successful bidders,” Deshpande said. “Since we were not successful bidders, nothing further had to be done,” he added.

City Corporation”s involvement had been vehemently denied by Pawar and his Parliamentarian daughter Supriya Sule. The duo had said that the Pawar family was not involved in any bidding process but had admitted that Deshpande was allowed to go ahead in his “individual capacity”.

Deshpande said the company”s Board backed out of bidding for the team after a March 17 meeting where a fresh resolution allowing him to go ahead individually was passed. .

Bahujan Vikas Agadhi wins Vasai-Virar civic polls

Mumbai, May 31 (IANS) Hitendra Thakur-led Bahujan Vikas Agadhi Monday won the first ever election to the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, on the outskirts of north Mumbai, capturing 55 of the 89 wards.

‘We had expected to win over 50 wards and we got it. I thank all those who had faith in the party and those who elected members of our party,’ Thakur said.

Vivek Pandit-led Jan Andolan Samiti contested from 38 wards and won 19. Out of 48 wards the Congress contested, it won only two.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) failed to open their account from any of the 46 wards they contested, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won one ward out of the 17 contested.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena won from one ward out of 17 contested, while Shiv Sena won from three wards out of 40. Independents won in eight wards.

As many as 383 candidates spread over 89 wards had contested the elections. One candidate of Bahujan Vikas Agadhi was declared elected unopposed.

The election took place Sunday with approximately 43 percent of the 6.5 lakh electorate exercising their franchise, said election officers.

There were 603 polling booths with around 3,500 polling staff on duty.

Situated on the outskirts of north Mumbai, the Vasai taluka had four municipal councils — Vasai, Nala Sopara, Virar and Navghar-Manickpur — and 72 gram panchayats. They were all dissolved and the municipal corporation was formed July 3, 2009.

Raina promises a field day

To say that being in-charge of the Indian team is one of the most daunting propositions in world cricket may not quite seem like overstating the fact. Of the many responsibilities an Indian cricket captain is faced with, it is often the relentless and hard-to-please media back home, which proves to be a stiffer and unforgiving challenge than any opposition he comes across on the field.

At least, Suresh Raina, who will become the 20 th ODI captain for India-and the first from Uttar Pradesh- in Zimbabwe, passed his first test satisfactorily, displaying a calm exterior during his first-ever pre-tour press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

When asked-on a number of occasions-if regular Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-who also leads Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise that Raina represents-had passed down any tips, the 24-year-old left-hander only revealed that he was asked to keep things simple. And while it remains to be seen whether Raina does heed his skipper’s advice when it comes to the action in Zimbabwe or not, he did stick to it during the press-briefing by keeping his responses ‘simple’ and cliched.

“It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” got reiterated by Raina at least four times the number of international games that his young pace-attack has managed between them for India.

And his opinions remained the same regarding both his personal goals as well as that of his young team.

Getting the opportunity at such a young age though did come as a pleasant surprise, believed Raina, and he expected his team to live up to their billing of the second-best ODI team in the world. “It was always a dream but it is a great responsibility. The seniors don’t often take breaks from the game and now that they have, it is up to the bench-strength to rise and do well. A good performance here will go a long way in enhancing their future opportunities,” he explained.

While almost the entire Indian team faced the wrath of the media following their disappointing exit from the World T20, Raina was the only one left unscathed. After all he was the only Indian batsman to have totaled three-figures in the tournament, finishing with over 200 runs, including a century against South Africa. He believed that it was up to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and make the most of the seniors’ absence.

“They have all scored a lot of runs in the IPL and in domestic cricket but the onus is on them to replicate that form for India now,” said Raina.

Of the many criticisms that were stacked against the Indian team, it was their poor fielding that came under the scanner the most. But Raina believed his young team would prove a more athletic unit in the field. “We will run harder and are fitter. And if we score a total of 240-250, we will make it look like a 280+ target with our fielding,” said the new Indian captain. With conditions expected to assist fast bowling, Raina believed his team’s strength would be his pace-bowling department led by the inexperienced lot of Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda. “We have bowlers like Umesh who have pace and can trouble the opposition batsmen in those conditions,” he said.

Unlike Dhoni or most of his predecessors, Raina at least signed off on an optimistic note rather than sticking to a well-rehearsed diplomatic tone, insisting that there were no weaknesses in his side and that returning with the trophy was his sole objective as an Indian captain.

BCCI puts Team India sponsorship up for grabs

With its deal with Sahara coming to an end next month, the BCCI on Monday invited bids from companies through a tender notice for sponsoring four Indian squads, including the much sought-after men’s outfit.

The tender notice, issued by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, called for firms to bid for sponsorship of the men’s, women’s, India A and India under 19 teams, indicating the documents would be available from May 24 for a non-refundable payment of Rs 5 lakh.

It said all bidders need to fulfill the eligibility criteria set up by the Board as well as other requirements as mentioned in the bid document.

Submission of the bids also has to be done as per conditions outlined, the Board also reserved its rights “to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage and to reject any and/or all bids without providing any reasons, including calling for a re-tender.”

BCCI’s deal with existing sponsors Sahara is set to come to a close next month.

Sahara, which has supported the Indian team for several years as its main sponsor, recently bid successfully for the new Pune IPL franchise for a staggering Rs 1700 crore.

Sahara will review its sponsorship to the Indian cricket team, Group chief Subroto Roy had said after winning the IPL franchise bid on March 23.

Sahara had bagged the sponsorship for the Indian cricket team for Rs 400 crore for a four-year period ending December 2009, and had agreed to continue for six more months as BCCI could not find any sponsors.

“No, it will not. Only thing we will see is our continuation of sponsorship to the Indian cricket team. We will sit on that and we will discuss on that. But on all other sports nothing will be affected,” Roy had said on the impact of the Group’s aggressive bidding to acquire the IPL’s Pune franchise.

Asserting that the Group, which is also sponsoring the Indian hockey team, would seriously consider (limiting) exposure to the BCCI and the women’s cricket, he said then that the Group “will take a conscious decision about it.”

Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz to star in final chapter of ‘Twilight’ saga

New York, May 20 (ANI): Actors Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz have been signed for ‘Breaking Dawn’, the fourth part of ‘Twilight’ movie series.

Both the stars will join Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the fourth and the last version.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, stars were reportedly demanding for their price hike but the duo have settled pay disputes over the ‘Twilight’ saga’s final chapter, reports the New York Post.

Movie studio Summit Entertainment, which has made billions off the franchise, has been negotiating with the two supporting characters since last week, but the two actors reportedly wanted increase in their pay for the next flick.

Since the studio did not allow them to renegotiate on the second and third films.

“The studio realized how valuable Ashley and Kellan are to the franchise and did what they needed to do to keep them,” said a source close to the situation.

Twilight stars embroiled in pay dispute

London, May 19 (ANI): Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has landed herself into the alleged pay dispute which threatens to delay the final instalment of the movie franchise, insisting the film”s supporting cast “probably do” deserve a wage increase.

Although lead cast actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are receiving multi-million pound pay cheques stars like Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz are reportedly amidst negotiations for higher pay scales.

There is even talk going around about replacing some of the supporting cast if the negotiations fail.

“Ashley and Kellan have agents, managers, lawyers… you get all of these outside influences telling you you should hold out for this much because you”re such an important part of the franchise,” The Daily Star quoted the director as saying.

“Possibly, Ashley and Kellan might not even be all that involved. They have all the other people telling them things and a lot of stuff can get mishandled. There”s so many possible misunderstandings. It breaks my heart.

“It could turn ugly. Do (these actors) deserve more money? Probably they do, on one level. But, if everybody makes so much money then… it”s complicated. What a mess,” the director added.

The film, ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’, will be shot in two parts, back-to-back starting autumn 2010. (ANI)

IPL fiasco: BCCI office bearers cannot take work home

Mumbai, May 4 (ANI): Embarrassing gaps in the IPL paper trail have prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ban its office bearers from taking key documents home with them.

BCCI president Shashank Manohar had last week been forced to admit that much key IPL paperwork was missing.

“It is just a precaution, we have learnt our lesson from the Modi episode,” a BCCI official told the Indian Express.

Veteran administrator and onetime ICC boss Jagmohan Dalmiya, is leading the questioning of IPL finances.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, former Indian batsman Dilip Vengsarkar is believed to have questioned the limited role played by the state associations in the franchise-driven IPL.

The private ownership of each team has created an environment rich for exploitation, with Modi having until May 11 to adequately answer a string of BCCI accusations. (ANI)

We are co-operating with BCCI, other bodies: Kings XI

New Delhi, April 29 (IANS) Kings XI Punjab said Thursday that the franchisee is co-operating with Income Tax (IT) department and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in investigations over the ownerhsip details of the Chandigarh-based Indian Premier League (IPL) team.

‘The franchisee, KXIP, is co-operating completely with the BCCI and all the relevant regulatory bodies. It would be inappropriate to comment beyond this at this moment. In the interim, we request media not to resort to unsubstantiated allegations and frivolous speculation,’ Kings XI said in a statement.

IT officials Wednesday questioned officials of KPH Dreams Private Limited, which owns Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab. The questioning went on for nearly five hours.

Earlier, a team of IT officials visited the storehouse-cum-office of Kings XI Punjab in Mohali town in Punjab April 23 to verify some documents.

These moves were prompted by the recent controversies in the IPL over new Kochi franchise and questions being raised about the sources of its funds.

London, April 29 (ANI): Actor Bill Murray has denied plans of a ‘Ghostbusters 3’, calling the reports ‘hogwash’.

Director Ivan Reitman had also revealed that he is planning to shoot the movie in 2010, reports The Daily Star.

But Murray insists that the stories about the film are “just talk” and there are no concrete plans to make a third part.

“It”s just really the movie studio. They love the franchise; they”d just like to re-create it again,” he told the Cinema Blend.

“All this talk is just talk. It drives me nuts, it”s just people talking… Until someone actually creates a great script it”s just hogwash, it doesn”t mean anything.

“It”s interesting that people are interested in it, they”d like to see it. It was a great thing, it really was fun. Maybe it should (happen). And if it”s such a good idea, then someone will write the screenplay,” he said. (ANI)

IPL has first call on New Zealand cricketers over Kiwi counterparts

Auckland, Apr 28(ANI): New Zealand’s representative at September’s Champions League Twenty20 tournament is likely to lose out its players to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

The Central Districts Stags, who have qualified to attend the event after winning this season’s domestic Twenty20 title, have three players – Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram and Graham Napier, who already have contracts with IPL franchises.

Talking about the issue, Stags Chief Executive Blair Furlong said that he did not know who had first call on their services.

“That’s to be decided. There’s no information on this year’s tournament yet because obviously they’ve only just had their meeting at the end of the IPL to confirm South Africa [as the tournament venue],” Stuff.co.nz quoted Furlong, as saying.

“Basically the situation is that you nominate an initial squad, which in our case would obviously include the players that played for us last season, which would include Oram, Taylor and Napier,” he added.

However, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Manager Geoff Allott was clear about the issue, and said the IPL teams had first option on the players.

“Part of their contract says that their franchises have first dibs on them. If the IPL franchise does not want them, then Central Districts Stags will get them,” Allott said.

“All things being equal, we would be wanting all our players to play for us. But there”s a decision to be made by the players in terms of where they go and who they play for,” he added. (ANI)

Fourth Twilight story to start filming in October

Melbourne, April 27 (ANI): The last chapter in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, will start filming in October.

Christian Serratos, who plays Angela in the hit franchise, let the cat out of the bag while she was in Melbourne recently, reports Herald Sun.

Until now there has been no confirmation if the last instalment of Stephenie Meyer”s best-selling book series would be filmed.

It is believed that the 754-page novel might be split into two feature films.

While Eclipse star Gil Birmingham, Daniel Cudmore and Booboo Stewart refused to confirm the film”s start date, Serratos accidentally revealed the schedule.

“No word is out yet,” Stewart said, to which “No, October” was Serratos quick reply.

Birmingham, who plays Taylor Lautner”s father Jacob Black, was quick to try covering up the gaffe.

“We could tell you, but we”d have to kill you – like we will Christian,” he said. (ANI)

Manohar accuses Modi of violating ‘confidentiality’ clause

Mumbai, April 22 (IANS) Indian cricket board president Shashank Manohar Thursday accused Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi of violating the ‘confidentiality’ clause signed by the board and the franchisees by declaring the ownership stakes.

Manohar said the new IPL Kochi franchise were contemplating legal action against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Modi tweeted the ownership details.

He also charged Modi with ‘selectively leaking’ the e-mail to media that he wrote April 14 asking for permission to reveal the ownership detail of the franchisees.

‘After the names were leaked, I get a communication from (Vivek) Venugopal (partner in Rendezvous) around night saying that there is a Confidentiality Clause in the agreement, which had been signed between the board and them and there is a serious breach of obligation on part of the board. He also said in the communication that they are contemplating legal action.’

‘Because of the communication, I told Modi to keep quiet with regard to the new franchise. The media pounced on Modi so wisdom dawned on him on April 14 when he wrote an e-mail to me and members April 14 suggesting that we should disclose the names of all franchise which had not done since January 2008. Then I replied that the issue is complicated and needs detailed deliberations and has legal implications and hence it should be discussed and considered by the Governing Council meeting in Mumbai. The other members of the governing council also agreed with me. Modi agreed with me.’

‘We are talking about documents that we have not seen before.’

Manohar also charged Modi that he leaked the e-mail to media.

‘Modi selectively leaked the mail. Its fine for him to leak the mail. When he has not (revealed the ownership details) done that for two years, 10 days would not have made a difference.’

Antonio Banderas confirms Shrek spin-off

London, Apr 21 (ANI): Antonio Banderas has confirmed that he will be voicing for a Shrek spin-off movie which will follow his character Puss In Boots.

In the animated ogre franchise, the Spanish actor voices the mischievous cat.

And Banderas has already started working on a new film based on the role, alongside Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis.

The actor will be reprising the role in the upcoming fourth and final Shrek film, ‘Shrek Forever After’ and has revealed that the upcoming project will be based on Puss In Boots” childhood.

“I already did the first recordings and it”s going to be called Puss In Boots – it starts when he was very little. He was in an orphanage when he first discovered the effect he has on people – that”s when he starts being intelligent,” The Daily Express quoted him as saying.

And Banderas is happy that he can use his natural accent at work.

“When I got to the United States – I was 30 at the time – I didn”t speak the language at all. The fact they gave me a character for the use of my voice only was quite surprising, but I suppose I have such an accent that is so recognisable that they thought it was perfect. Because I had been playing characters that were bigger than life, heroic, stuff like that, putting it into a tiny body of a pussy cat was fun,” he said. (ANI)
