Wimbledon fights foxes, frost and pigeons for top lawns

(Reuters) – Urinating vixens, greedy pigeons, May frost and idiosyncratic mowers are just a few of the problems facing Wimbledon’s head groundsman in the run up to the world’s most famous tennis championships.

Sports

Most tournaments, even if they once were played on grass, now use easier-to-manage hard or clay courts, but for Eddie Seaward the yearly cycle of growth and tending is part of the joy of his job, wildlife notwithstanding.

Foxes who roam freely round leafy and prosperous Wimbledon, in southwest London, are regular visitors to the All England Club, even seen creeping across the commentary boxes high on Center Court. They are welcome as long as they keep off the grass.

“We put an electric fence round here and the showcourts most of the year,” Seaward told Reuters as his staff and an army of cleaners and contractors busied themselves round the pristine green sward of Center Court preparing for Roger Federer on Monday’s opening day.

“It’s the vixens that are the problem, if they urinate on the court it just kills the grass off,” he added.

Centuries-old methods, in keeping with Wimbledon’s love of tradition, are used to keep at bay the pigeons, who would otherwise gorge on newly sown seed.

“We have a hawk to scare off the pigeons. It flies three times a week and that deters them,” he said. The falconer and his hawk are kept busy even during the championship fortnight so that the pigeons do not come back and bother players and crowd.

Seaward, chief groundsman since 1991 has delayed retirement to stay on until the 2012 Olympics, when Wimbledon will host the tennis tournament.

He has overseen changes from a grass mixture to a 100 percent rye grass which is tougher and helps to create a harder surface. Critics say the courts have slowed down, penalizing the serve-and-volley aficionados, but Seaward, who constantly measures the courts’ performance, says speed is unchanged.

What has altered is the height of the bounce.

“It’s slightly less dense which allows more air movement through the grass and that helps the soil get harder quicker which means the ball bounces higher from day one,” he said.

DIFFICULT YEAR

Players had a fraction of a second longer to reach a higher-bouncing ball, instead of having to catch it low off the ground, he explained.

“The bounce was lower because the ground was softer. That’s the only difference.”

The stoical Seaward and his 14 permanent staff have had a particularly difficult growing year. A sharp late frost in May when nothing would germinate meant they had to cover the courts with a membrane to create a greenhouse effect and warm the soil.

“Then it was hot and dry, then it got cold again so all the way along we’ve had to battle the weather this year — but that’s what we do, that’s our job,” Seaward, who has weather forecasts sent to him every hour, said.

As he stared across his unblemished court, the groundsman was sympathetic to the problems that Wembley Stadium in north London has been suffering with its much-criticised pitch, constantly churned up and needing renewal.

Wembley had to try to keep its turf in top condition the whole year, he said. It needed the ball to roll rather than bounce so it had a sandy rather than clay soil.

“I don’t think you can compare them, it’s like chalk and cheese,” Seaward said. “We grow the grass at the right time of the year — in the summer — and we’ve got to have it in peak condition for only two weeks really.”

To ensure top conditions and make sure the lawns look good too, Seaward allots each of his staff a court to mow with the same mower throughout the buildup and the tournament itself.

All machines were different, he explained, and all operators had their own way of mowing. If a different machine or cutter were used, the lines would not be perfect, the light and shade would not match and the court would look wrong.

“We want to get everything just right.”

Gary Lineker to cook lunch if he loses soccer bet to wife Danielle Bux

London, May 10 (ANI): Retired English footballer Gary Lineker has made a soccer bet with his wife Danielle Bux that could land him in the kitchen next week cooking lunch if he loses.

Lineker, 49, made the bet with the 30-year-old Welsh lingerie model when his favourite team Leicester City met her Cardiff in a Championship play-off.

The Welsh side beat the Foxes 1-0 in the first leg on May 9.

“Gary and I have had a little bet and it’s first leg to me,” the Sun quoted Bux as saying.

“Whoever loses has to do the roast chicken and veg next weekend – and it looks like it could be Gary,” she added.

But the Match of the Day host still has a chance in the second leg, which will take place on May 12. (ANI)

Overweight hedgehogs put on diet

A Scottish animal rescue centre forced 12 hedgehogs to go on a diet because they had grown too fat to roll into a ball to protect themselves, it said Thursday.

The prickly animals had to lose weight before being released back into the wild by the Scottish Wildlife Rescue Centre, which had taken them in over the winter.

“The hedgehogs first came in to our care last December, but they only started to show signs of piling on the pounds in late January,” centre manager Colin Seddon said in a statement announcing their release.

“They have lost a bit of weight as a result of us rationing their daily cat food.

“But we’ve left them with some fat reserves because it looks as though we aren’t out of the cold snap just yet.”

Mr Seddon told the BBC the hedgehogs need some fat for hibernation.

“But when they get too much fat then they’re not able to roll into a little tight ball which makes them very vulnerable to predators like badgers and foxes,” he said.

“The problem was that they had to be kept in for an extended period because of the cold weather and if we keep them indoors they stay relatively warm and they don’t hibernate so all they do is just eat.

“They’re just like people, we all put on weight at different speeds and we all exercise at different amounts and hedgehogs are the same.”

The newly-trim animals were released into the wild at the Explorers Garden in Pitlochry, central Scotland.

Explorers Garden’s manager Julia Corden says she was “really moved” by the hedgehogs.

“I was delighted when Colin got in touch to say they were to be released,” she said.

“They will find plenty of log and leaf piles to nest in, whilst living happily with their garden neighbours – red squirrels, pine martens, and lots of bird life.”

Record turtle hatchlings head to sea

A record number of baby loggerhead turtles have hatched on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast beaches this season.

Turtlecare coordinator Julie O’Connor says hundreds of volunteers have been monitoring 68 nests across the coast since November.

She estimates as many as 6,000 hatchlings have made their way to the ocean during the season.

“Apart from the more intense than usual battle that we had with the foxes, we had a lot more nests,” she said.

“We had 68 nests between Shelley Beach and Point Cartwright this season, compared to 50 last year, 29 the year before and apparently it’s a 28-year high in nesting throughout Queensland for loggerheads.”

World’s oldest temple found in Turkey

Washington, March 20 (ANI): A team of archaeologists has claimed that a temple being excavated in southeastern Turkey is 12,000 years old and is likely the oldest temple ever uncovered in the world.

According to a report by United Press International (UPI), the site was first identified in 1986 when a farmer tilling his field in Sanliurfa found a statuette in the soil.

Since then, archaeologists have uncovered the foundation of the temple built in the Neolithic Age along with carvings of pigs, foxes, snakes, fawns and headless humans.

Officials with the Harran University Archaeology Department have yet to identify the culture that built the temple or their belief system.

German teams were the first to excavate beginning in 1995, but the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry placed the site on its first-degree protection list in 2005, taking control of the research.

Prior to this discovery, the world’s oldest known temple was in Malta, dating from 5,000 B.C. (ANI)

Mandy Moore ‘prefers music other than her husband’s’

New York, Mar 15 (ANI): American singer songwriter Mandy Moore was found preferring to listen to songs by other singers rather than songs by her husband Ryan Adams.

As per a source, the list included songs like “Whatever It Is” by Ben Lee and “Blue Ridge Mountain” by Fleet Foxes.

Bush was punctual because he was a ‘hedgehog’, Obama late because he is a ‘fox’!

Washington, Feb 7 (ANI): There are two kinds of US presidents, Foxes and hedgehogs, and ‘fox’ Barack Obama is routinely late to events and news conferences, according to Allan Lichtman, a political history professor at the American University.

Barely two weeks into his presidency, Barack Obama has made a clean break from George W. Bush, by appearing late for official events.

Obama closely resembles Bill Clinton, who was famously late to events when he was president. By contrast, Bush despised being late and was punctual to a fault.

Bush set the tone early in his presidency — he arrived at the Capitol five minutes early for his inauguration, FOX News reported.

“President Bill Clinton was always late because he wasn’t very disciplined in general,” he said.

There are two kinds of presidents, Lichtman said: “Foxes and hedgehogs.”

“Foxes know a little about everything. They have their fingers in every pie. … Hedgehogs only know a few things and know it well and leave the details to others. Clinton was a classic fox. Bush was a classic hedgehog.”

And Obama? He appears to be a fox, too, Lichtman said.

Obama has been habitually late to events on the campaign trail and to meetings as a US Senator. In fact, there’s a montage on YouTube of him offering apologies for missing testimony and presentations because of his late arrivals to meetings of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, FOX News reported.

The president’s tardiness already appears to have spread to others in his administration. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has been routinely late for daily news briefings, sometimes by more than an hour.

Obama was 45 minutes late on Friday for a ceremony in which he introduced a team of outside economic advisers.

Obam was 10 minutes late on Thursday to a memo signing at the Energy Department. He was nearly 30 minutes late on Wednesday for the ceremony at which he signed a bill to expand children’s health care. (ANI)

Sheepdogs shepherd endangered penguins in Australia

Sheepdogs shepherd endangered penguins in Australia Sydney – Sheepdogs have proved such perfect guardians for a colony of fairy penguins on a small south-coast Australian island that conservationists are confident the caring canines can be recruited to safeguard other endangered animals from being savaged by foxes and wild dogs.

“We’re now starting to see some great results,” said Middle Island Maremma Project manager Ian Fitzgibbons. “We’ve had our best penguin count since we began in
2006 with over 80 birds counted in one night and I think we have about 26 chicks on the island too.”

Maremmas are a breed of sheepdog from Italy that bond with flocks and protect them from predators. They live with their flocks and will lay down their lives for them.

Until a couple of Maremmas were recruited to guard the fairy penguins on Middle Island four years ago, conservationists had despaired of saving the colony. Numbers had fallen from 5,000 to just 100.

“We’ve seen the Maremmas barking when other animals come into the area,” Fitzgibbon told Australia’s AAP news agency. “And we’ve seen foxes visiting the area less frequently as a result of the Maremmas being on the island. They can smell them and sense that there’s another dog on the island and they basically stay right away.”

He said the project had sparked interest around the globe.

“Because no one else in the world has done it, no one has used Maremmas for conservation management, we’re the pioneers and learning as we go and I guess it’s a step by step process,” Fitzgibbons said. (dpa)
