Breuer and Fox to keep MPs in line

MP Lyn Breuer says she will be firm but fair in her new role as South Australia’s parliamentary speaker.

The 59-year-old Whyalla MP has been nominated to become the first woman to fill the position full-time.

Molly Byrne was acting speaker in 1972.

Ms Breuer believes she will get some respect as a woman in the chair and says parliamentary standards need to improve.

“Probably most behaviour occurs in question time where we can always expect some antics but I think we can still have some fun,” she said.

“We can still be very serious about what’s happening and we can keep some of that bad behaviour out.”

She says it something of a reflection on society that she is the first woman to hold the role in more than 150 years.

MP Chloe Fox has been chosen as deputy speaker.

Wallabies settling in to Warrumbungles

A year ago today 24 brush-tailed rock wallabies were flown in by helicopter to the Warrumbungles National Park near Coonabarabran to try to prevent the species’ extinction.

While there were some deaths in the initial months, the animals, which were bred in captivity, are now settled in and it is believed some may be pregnant.

A threatened species officer with the Department of Climate Change, Environment and Water, Todd Soderquist, says two other groups, also brought in this year, provided lessons in how to better prepare animals for the wild.

“Because of the mortality of naive animals during the first release we tried a technique of hardening the animals off in a wild circumstance around the Jenolan Caves area where we have a very good fox control program,” he said.

“It allowed the animals to get their feet on the rock as the case is and figure out exactly how to become wild animals without quite the pressure of predation.”

He says some more wallabies were added to the colony earlier this year and some had to be hiked in which was a new experience.

“I was surprised at how easy the animals handled being put in a bag as if it’s the mother’s pouch and put on a frame pouch and quickly hiked to the top of the mountain, they did quite well actually,” he said.

The crucial time for determining the program’s success in terms of the birth of joeys will be the next four to six months.

Some Americans think opposition to Obama’s policies is based on racism

Washington, Sep. 18 (ANI): Some Americans, including former President Jimmy Carter, believe that those who are opposing US President Barrack Obama’s policies have a racial element against him instead of simple disagreement.

According to a recent Fox News poll, 65 percent Americans think that opposition to Obama’s policies is based on honest disagreements, while 20 percent say it is mostly motivated by racism.

However, Black voters are twice as likely to say the opposition is motivated by race, with 63 percent citing racism as the reason for opposition and 27 percent say it is based on honest disagreements.

Most white voters (71 percent) say the opposition comes from honest disagreements.

Most Republicans (87 percent) and independents (69 percent) believe that opposition to Obama’s policies is based on honest disagreements, while 48 percent Democrats say honest disagreements and 34 percent say it is motivated by racism, the poll found.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters with a 3-point margin of error.

The poll also found that 54 percent of Americans think Obama is a “new kind” of politician, while a large 39 percent minority says he is a “typical” politician.

As for Obama’s handling of health care, 44 percent approved and 48 percent disapproved.

Obama received better ratings on his handling of the economy (55 percent approve) and on the war in Afghanistan (51 percent).

By a wide 60 percent to 27 percent margin, Americans think the country has become more divided rather than more united since Obama took office in January, the poll found. (ANI)

Despite IAEA findings, Iran sings its old nuke-for-peaceful-purposes tune

Tehran, Sep. 18 (ANI): Even as a secret IAEA report revealed that Iran is capable of making a nuclear bomb and is developing a missile system to carry an atomic warhead, Iranian officials have reiterated claims that the Islamic nation’s nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.

Fox News quoted Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, as saying that Iran is sincere in wanting to negotiate with the West.

He added that Western countries should “read between the lines” about Iran’s intentions.

Although the prospects of finding anything between the lines were almost nil after the surfacing of the IAEA report, but Soltanieh insisted that discussions with the West would be a “real, new window of opportunity.”

The secret U.N. watchdog report, titled “Possible Military Dimension of Iran’s Nuclear Program,” concludes:

*Iran worked on developing a chamber inside a ballistic missile capable of housing a warhead payload “that is quite likely to be nuclear.”

*Iran engaged in “probable testing” of explosives commonly used to detonate a nuclear warhead – a method known as a “full-scale hemispherical explosively driven shock system.”

*Iran worked on developing a system “for initiating a hemispherical high explosive charge” of the kind used to help spark a nuclear blast.

“Iran has sufficient information to be able to design and produce a workable implosion nuclear device (an atomic bomb) based on HEU (highly enriched uranium) as the fission fuel,” The agency assessed.

On October 1, Iran is scheduled to meet with the U.S. and five other world powers seeking curbs on its atomic activities for the first time in more than a year.

However, Tehran says it is not prepared to discuss its nuclear activities. (ANI)

Aniston flaunts sexy legs and sexier pooch at Love Happens LA premiere

Washington, Sept 18 (ANI): Jennifer Aniston is known for her super svelte body in Hollywood and world over. However, she made heads turn at Los Angeles premiere of “Love Happens” by sporting a bit of a pooch.

The 40-year-old, who was wearing a sequined mini on the Tuesday event, also drew attention because of her sexy toned legs.

“It’s a team of people! I really am physical everyday, it keeps all of the pistons firing,” Aniston recently told FOX News’ Pop Tarts.

“Being physically in shape is important, especially when you have to sometimes work 13-16 hour days,” she added.

Love Happens is a romantic drama that places Aniston opposite “The Dark Knight” hunk Aaron Eckhart. (ANI)

Ponting’s 27th ton helps Australia beat England in fifth ODI

Nottingham (UK), Sep.16 (ANI): Ricky Ponting scored a brilliant 126 of 109 balls to keep Australia in the hunt for a 7-0 whitewash of their one-day series against England, leading his side to a four-wicket victory in the fifth one-day international at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

Ponting’s 27th ton in ODIs included three sixes and 14 fours, as Australia raced to 302 for six wickets with 10 balls to spare in reply to England’s total of 299 from their 50 overs.

He was well supported by deputy Michael Clarke, who reached 52 off 64.

Irishman Eoin Morgan’s maiden half-century steered England to their best score of the series in a dead rubber after Australia clinched the series 4-0 at Lord’s on Saturday.

Mitchell Johnson brought up the winning runs with a six off Ryan Sidebottom to remain unbeaten on 18, while Cameron White was not out 24.

Poor fielding frustrated England captain Andrew Struass, who demanded improvement from his batsmen after the first four matches.

“Our batters went out and played with a much more bold approach and that paid dividends today. The fielding was poor and that’s something that there should be no excuse for, we do a lot of work on the fielding and we should be better than that,” Fox Sports quoted Strauss, as saying.

The tourists rested Brett Lee, who claimed five wickets in the previous match, replacing him with fellow pacer Peter Siddle.

England brought in Mascarenhas for Luke Wright, who was hit on the toe on Monday while batting against a bowling machine set to mimic Lee’s inswinging yorkers which proved so effective last weekend.(ANI)

Ponting tells team not to ease off against England

London, Sep.15 (ANI): Australian middle-order batsman Michael Hussey has revealed that skipper Ricky Ponting has told the team not ease off against England in the ongoing one-day series despite taking a series-winning 4-0 lead.

“Ricky’s been on our hammer already basically about trying to maintain our momentum. We’ve also identified some areas we need to improve. We want to finish this summer well here in England and it’s a really good lead-up to the Champions Trophy, Fox Sports quoted Hussey, as saying.

“Momentum is not something you can turn on and off like a switch. If we can finish this series strongly, that will give us some good impetus going into the Champions Trophy … we’ve got to make sure that we maintain our standards leading into another huge one-day series in South Africa,” he added.

“Winning four games in a row is a very good achievement but we’ve got to keep building that winning momentum, that winning feeling around the team, and there’s still things I think we can improve at a lot if we are going to really challenge for the Champions Trophy,” Hussey said. (ANI)

Body double does most of Alec Baldwin’s role in 30 Rock

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Actor Alec Baldwin has a body double for his role in hit TV Show 30 Rock, as he can’t spare enough time to film it himself, it has emerged.

The star apparently works just three days a week, as he needs to travel back to Los Angeles to spend time with his daughter Ireland.

According to sources it has led to the comedy show creator and star, Tina Fey, organizing rehearsals and scenes around Baldwin’s absence, by using a stand-in.

“Tina saves Alec’s speaking lines for his arrival on set, but everything else is shot with a stand-in,” Fox News quoted an on-set source as saying.

Most shots featuring Baldwin’s character are shot from behind or sideways.

The insider said: “Those [body double takes] make it into the final cut of the show. There are many back shots and side shots that don’t show Alec’s face, because it is his stand-in on Alec’s days off.

“The goal is to have everything ready to shoot Alec when he’s there, with as little stress as possible.

“He does not have the desire to be tied to a set six or seven days a week, and Tina was willing to work it so that he could get everything he wanted. Alec can pretty much do anything he wants at ’30 Rock’.”

Baldwin was spotted at the U.S. Open this week watching tennis. (ANI)

US Army Nurse reveals ‘humane’ side of Saddam Hussein

Washington, Sep. 11 (ANI): Saddam Hussein might be remembered as a brutal international criminal by the rest of the world; but to retired U.S. Army Nurse Robert Ellis, who spent more time with the dictator than any other American, he was a patient with a humane side.

Ellis worked as the senior American medical advisor at Baghdad’s Camp Cropper, where Hussein was held for eight months until his execution in December 2006, Fox News reports.

During this period, Hussein who went by the code name “Victor” grew close to his caregiver, who was known to him by the code name “Alice.”

The report quoted Ellis as saying that when he told Hussein that he had to return to St. Louis to see his dying brother, Hussein hugged him and said: “I will be your brother.”

Ellis’ new book, “Caring for Victor,” is a record of his time with the ruthless tyrant.

For Ellis, the mission caused serious internal conflict.

“I was always conflicted throughout the whole mission. My job was to keep these people alive and healthy so they could be interrogated,” he said.

Ellis says that by remaining “non-judgmental,” he was able to see another side of a human who was considered to be a brutal killer.

“By me spending time with him, I got to see his other side, a side that you don’t hear about. They play by a different set of rules over there,” he added. (ANI)

Ang Lee ‘working on film version of Life of Pi’

Nevada (US), Sept 9 (ANI): Oscar winner Ang Lee is working with a writer on film adaptation of Yann Martel’s fantasy “Life of Pi” about a boy from Pondicherry, India, who survives 227 days after shipwreck, according to reports.

Lee is quoted as saying: “It’s a very strong story, but it’s hard to crack.”

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, welcoming the film adaptation of this India influenced story, urged Lee to handle the Pi’s spirituality exploration and holistic edge with cultural sensitivity.

Expected to be released in 2011, Canadian Martel’s (Manners of Dying) Man Booker Prize and other awards winning novel is an adventure tale about 16-years old Pi Patel stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, orangutan, an injured zebra, and a hungry Bengal tiger in Pacific Ocean on his voyage from India to Canada.

It has sold well over one million copies and was a global publishing phenomenon. Keith Robinson adapted it into a play and toured England.

Oscar nominated M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen); and Dean Georgaris (What Happens in Vegas) have already dropped this project after preliminary exploration.

The Fox 2000 high profile film adaptation will be produced by Gil Netter (Personal Effects). (ANI)

Rose McGowan loses elbow part during new film stunt

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): Rose McGowan has lost some part of her elbow after suffering serious injury on the sets of her new film ‘Red Sonja’, which is being directed by her fiance Robert Rodriguez.

While last year, the ‘Scream’ star was quite upbeat about her stunts in the she-devil comic book adaptation, but now her injury has brought the production to a standstill.

“I had wrist and elbow surgery and they took part of my elbow out. I had really bad nerve damage from doing stunts – I do a lot of my own stunts,” Fox News quoted McGowan as saying.

“I could no longer use my arm, but now I can hold a fork and drive so we’re working our way up. It’ll probably be another six months of rehab, but It’s the price you pay for being really limber and being able to do back flips!” she added.

However, despite her Hollywood success, the 35-year-old actress had initially thought being an actress was a pretty pathetic profession.

“I wasn’t trying to be an actor, I was standing outside of a gym waiting for my friend to come out and this woman he knew kept saying, ‘She should be in this movie blah blah blah’ and I was like, ‘Gross, I don’t want to be an actor! Ew!’ and then I found out they would pay me enough money for a down payment on an apartment,” said McGowan.

“Otherwise I would have had to go back and live with dad in Seattle. The film, ‘The Doomed Generation,’ became this huge cult movie and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and I’ve been following the Yellow Brick Road ever since…” she added. (ANI)

George Clooney’s ex Sara Larson turns private yoga instructor

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Former Las Vegas cocktail waitress Sara Larson, who dated actor George Clooney in 2007, has turned into a private yoga instructor in Los Angeles.

There had been rumours earlier this year of Larson having her own Vegas-based reality show in the works, but it seems she has opted for a more spiritually satisfying lifestyle.

“I do yoga pretty much every day. I am a certified yoga instructor, so I actually teach yoga,” Fox News quoted Larson as saying at the recent Reality Cares’ Sizzles Charity Benefit in Los Angeles.

She also revealed that “all of a sudden” guys have started calling out of nowhere for private classes, and she’s now in talks to design her own yoga-inspired clothing line.

Larson, who has found herself a new love, says she doesn’t give a hoot about her ex’s romantic relations.

“Dating has its challenges and either two people connect or they don’t,” she said.

“There’s a lot of other factors that are involved as to whether it will be a long-term relationship or not, but everything for me right now is new.

“I’m not in touch with George at all. I don’t have any regrets,” she added. (ANI)

‘The American’ leading al Qaeda in Somalia awaits terrorism charges back home

Washington, Sep 5 (ANI): The man who grew up in Daphne, Alabama, as Omar Hammami, but is now reported to be a member of al Qaeda-linked Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab under the name Abu Mansour al-Amriki, told a school newspaper after 9/11 attacks that it was “difficult to believe a Muslim could have done this”.

According to FOX News, eight years later he is professing to launch attacks himself and calling on others to join the fight, as terror-related charges await him at home in Alabama.

Abu Mansour al-Amriki or “The American” has become one of the most recognizable and outspoken voices of terrorist propaganda, the report said.

He has been in war-torn Somalia for several years, fighting the secular government there with a group known as al-Shabaab, which has ties to Al Qaeda and was labeled a terrorist organization by the US Government last year, but only recently has he taken on a starring and jarring role in al-Shabaab’s outreach efforts the report added.

The FBI has been looking into him for several years. In fact, a grand jury in Mobile, Alabama., has already indicted him on charges of providing material support to terrorists, a source said.

Al-Amriki first surfaced in October 2007, when Al-Jazeera TV aired a report about the “common goal” of al Qaeda and hard-line militants in Somalia. The report described al-Amriki as a fighter and military instructor, but he concealed his face with a cloth wrap throughout the report.

In April, he showed his face for the first time, during a highly polished, 30-minute recruitment video posted online. It featured anti-American hip-hop and sporadic images of Osama bin Laden.

In the video, he purportedly led a group of al-Shabaab militants in an ambush of pro-government forces in Somalia.

Speaking about one man killed in the fight, he said: “We need more like him, so if you can encourage more of your children and more of your neighbors, anyone around, to send people like him to this jihad, it would be a great asset for us.” (ANI)

‘Buy one, get one free boob implant’ billboard in Wisconsin raises stink!

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): A Wisconsin cosmetic surgeon is raising eyebrows – thanks to the expert’s buy one, get one free breast implant offer!

A large billboard along Highway 41 has been erected by Hotchandani Laser and Vein Center in Appleton promoting the “unique” offer.

“In today’s economy we’re trying to come up with creative ads that’ll get people in the door,” Christine Martens, who works for Jones Sign and came up with the billboard for Hotchandani Laser and Vein Center, said.

Jones Sign says it has done its job by attracting clients.

“He’s already paid for the ad,” Martens said.

The owner of the cosmetic center, Dr. Gope Hotchandani, said: “This is a little different.

“It took me by surprise. We want to make sure we have a positive impression of what we’re doing. Kind of catchy, but borderline.”

However, a few in downtown Appleton are not too happy with it, reports Fox News.

“Very definitely too much, if it’s going to be on a billboard where teenagers see it,” Linda Naden said.

“I don’t have a problem with it,” Jim Wingrove said. “They advertise everything else.” (ANI)

Shakira shows her sexy fashionista side in new mag shoot

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Columbian pop star Shakira has surprised her fans by dressing up in high end designer labels – a departure from her usual leather outfits, miniskirts and belly shirts – in the latest edition of Vanity Fair magazine.

The “She Wolf” has donned couture from Dior, Chanel and Gaultier for the mag.

Fox News quoted Vanity Fair writer Bruce Handy as saying: “It’s probably her sexiest video to date and also, though I’m not sure this was the intent, her most charmingly corny.

“She shakes and undulates, writhes around in a cage, lets loose with some endearing, halfhearted “awooooo”s, while singing, “There’s a she-wolf in the closet / Let it out so it can breathe.” (ANI)

Popular Arab TV Program exposes real Al Qaeda

Dubai, Sep.2 (ANI): The Al Arabiya satellite television channel has come up with a popular program titled “Death Making,” that exposes another side of Al Qaeda.

Hosted by female correspondent Rima Salha, the Dubai-based show is heading into its third year on Al Arabiya and aims to influence how the Arab world views Al Qaeda, reports Fox News.

It is a unique program that lets jihadists tell their stories, and then shows the results of their actions.

“It’s not enough to tell you that Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization. You have to understand why, what it means, how everything works, and what the end goal is for them,” Al Arabia’s general manager Abdul Rahman al-Rashed explains.

For her work, Salha, who is Lebanese, gets death threats, including when Osama bin Laden’s number two, Ayman al Zawahiri, singled the show and Al Arabiya out, by weaving video of both into one of his multi-media diatribes against mass media.

Despite the threats, Salah is undeterred. She goes to the jihadists, wherever they are: in refugee camps off limits even to security forces and to Iraq. She and her team convince subjects to talk to them. It’s not easy, but some of these militants apparently think they stand to benefit from a bit of publicity.

The topic of terrorism is so hot that Salha gets attacked from all sides. (ANI)

Phoenix pastor who prays for Obama’s death faces flak

Washington, Sep. 1 (ANI): Protestors have started voicing their opposition outside the congregation of a Phoenix-based pastor, who tells his parishioners that he prays for President Obama’s death.

Phoenix-based Pastor Steven Anderson attracted widespread attention after he delivered a sermon titled, “Why I Hate Barack Obama,” and encouraged his parishioners to join him in praying for the president’s death.

“I hope that God strikes Barack Obama with brain cancer so he can die like Ted Kennedy and I hope it happens today,” Fox News quoted him, as saying.

He called his message “spiritual warfare” and said he does not condone killing.

However, some protesters gathered around his church on Sunday, calling Anderson’s words “incomprehensible.”

According to the report, Anderson has also received some death threats.

Anderson’s provocative message stems from Obama’s abortion-rights stance.

In his controversial sermon, delivered at his Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe before Obama arrived for a speech in Phoenix earlier in the month, the pastor had said he wants the president to “melt like a snail” with salt on it.

“I’m gonna pray that he dies and goes to hell when I go to bed tonight. That’s what I’m gonna pray,” he told his congregation.

The last time fierce opposition to Obama’s abortion position drew widespread attention was when Obama delivered the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame, the report said.

The Anderson sermon was also in news after it was reported that one man carrying an assault rifle outside the Phoenix arena where Obama spoke was a member of Anderson’s church, the report added. (ANI)

German paper gives Auschwitz blueprints to Israel PM

Berlin, Aug. 28 (ANI): Germany has handed over 29 yellowing blueprints of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The blueprints give chilling details, with gas chambers, crematoria, delousing facilities and watchtowers drawn to scale. Over a million people, mostly Jews, died in the gas chambers or through forced labor, disease or starvation at Auschwitz, which the Nazis built after occupying Poland.

“There are those who deny that the Holocaust happened. Let them come to Jerusalem and look at these plans, these plans for the factory of death,” Fox News quoted Netanyahu as saying as he accepted the documents as a gift to Israel’s Holocaust memorial, where they will go on display next year.

Netanyahu lingered over the large sheets spread on a table.

Stamped with the Nazi abbreviation for concentration camp “K.L. Auschwitz,” one of the largest featured multi-colored sketches, with barracks and even latrines drawn in detail. Other smaller sheets showed architectural designs of individual buildings, drawn from various angles.

His wife, Sara, whose father was the only member of his family to survive the Nazi genocide that killed six million Jews during World War II, accompanied the Israeli leader. She watched somberly as the documents, which date from 1941 to 1943, were unfolded.

Also present was Yossi Peled, an Israeli Cabinet minister and former general whose father was killed by the Nazis and whose mother survived Auschwitz in one of the barracks detailed in the blueprints.

A family in Belgium who raised him as a Christian hid Peled himself until age 7. He discovered his Jewish roots in 1948 and was taken to Israel two years later.

In Germany for a visit that combined talks on the Mideast conflict with acknowledgments of the painful past that binds the two countries, Netanyahu drew a clear parallel between the events of the Nazi era and the present day. The world did not do enough to stop the murder of Europe’s Jews, he said, and must be careful now to take rapid action against “armed barbarism.”

Axel Springer Verlag, the publisher of the mass circulation Bild newspaper, obtained the Auschwitz blueprints last year from a German man who said he found them when cleaning out an apartment in what was formerly East Berlin.

The publisher and Germany’s federal archive have confirmed the documents’ authenticity. (ANI)

Shakira goes wild, ‘unorthodox’ in her new music video

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Shakira is all set to go wild in the video of her upcoming music album.

The video will feature the 32-year-old throwing kicks and angry glances at the camera.

Fox News quoted Shakira as saying: “I’m less shy now that I hit my 30′s. After that happens you feel a little bit more free, you accept yourself in many different ways and your more comfortable in your own flesh.”

However, the Colombian lass will continue to set the screen ablaze by her sexy dance moves.he said: “I’m not a trained dancer. I did a little bit of gymnastic when I was 12; everything else it’s just me feeling the music. But I do have an unorthodox ways to approve my music or test it.”

“When I’m in the studio and I’m producing my own music, [I've got to] make sure I connect to it at a physical level. My body has to move and my hips have to move and if I don’t see that kind of reaction, that physical reaction, then I know that something is not working,” she added. (ANI)
