Stosur can end Aussie women’s title drought in French Open: Pratt

Sydney, May 21(ANI): Former Australian tennis star Nicole Pratt has backed Samantha Stosur to break a 30-year drought for Australian women’s tennis by winning the French Open, which begins on Sunday.

Australian woman have failed to taste success at a Grand Slam event since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won Wimbeldon in 1980, but Pratt believes that Stosur has the experience to go all the way at Roland Garros.

“She has now had enough experience with the pressure of being a top player, making the French Open semis last year and I really think she is coming into her own in terms of maturity,” Fox News quoted Pratt, as saying.

“If Sam can just get a few wins early on I am going to pick her to win the French. I think she will handle the pressure quite well,” she added.

Stosur has had a successful run leading to the tournament, having won 14 of her past 16 matches on clay surfaces and losses only to Justine Henin and Venus Williams.

Pratt has been keeping a close watch on Stosur and said her results coming in to the tournament are reflective of her recent form.

“I watched her play in Madrid last week and she is very clear about what she is trying to do on the court. She is looking extremely fit and confident,” Pratt said. (ANI)

Obama job rating slips into negative territory again: Fox Poll

Washington, May 21 (ANI): Views continue to be mixed on President Obama’s job rating, and for the first time, his approval rating has dipped below 80 percent among Democrats, a Fox News poll finds.

In all, 45 percent of voters approve and 46 percent disapprove of the president”s job performance.

Earlier this month 48 percent approved and 43 percent disapproved. A year ago, 60 percent approved and 30 percent disapproved (May 12-13, 2009).

Seventy-nine percent of Democrats approve and 12 percent disapprove. That”s a record low approval for Obama among his party faithful.

Republicans remain solidly in the disapprove column, as 84 percent give the president a negative rating and 12 percent approve. More independents disapprove (48 percent) than approve (39 percent) — and that”s been true for about two months.

The poll followed up the presidential job rating question with an open-ended question that allowed voters to say in their own words why they approve or disapprove.

Among those approving of President Obama”s performance, 45 percent say it”s because he”s “doing a good job” overall, followed by nine percent saying because he “cares about average people.” Eight percent say health care, 7 percent the improving economy and 6 percent say they agree with him on the issues. Smaller numbers mention his honesty (4 percent) and liking him personally (4 percent).

The most common reason cited for disapproving of the president is “he is doing a bad job” (21 percent). Other reasons include the deficit and government spending (14 percent), disagreeing with him on the issues (14 percent), the economy (13 percent), and health care (13 percent). The next most often cited reason for disapproving is he is “pushing socialism” (6 percent).

The job rating of Congress, meanwhile, is holding steady: 22 percent approve and 65 percent disapprove. Last month 22 percent of voters approved and 68 percent disapproved.
The national telephone poll was conducted for Fox News by Opinion Dynamics Corp. among 900 registered voters from May 18 to May 19. For the total sample, the poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. (ANI)

Washington, May 21 (ANI): The exposure of American intelligence failures by critics has forced the Obama administration to accept the resignation of National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair.

”Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” triggers Facebook row

Washington, May 20 (ANI): The ”Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” on Facebook, which was a cartoonist”s call to action against censorship, has snowballed into a controversy leading to death threats, a court order and a call for a boycott of the social networking site.

Seattle-based cartoonist named Molly Norris started the campaign in a bid to protest against Comedy Central”s decision to censor an episode of ‘South Park’ that depicted Muhammad in a bear costume.

The network took the decision after an Islamic extremist website warned of retaliation against the show”s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker

And to protest against the decision, Norris created a poster with likenesses of Muhammad as a domino, a teacup and a box of pasta.

Thus, she declared May 20 as ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!’— and her efforts quickly went viral, spawning several Facebook pages with thousands of followers dedicated to the event.

They also prompted a “protest” movement by thousands of other Facebook users opposed to it.

While Norris herself has withdrawn from the cause, but she is glad her efforts encouraged others to speak out.

“I just thought that Viacom or Comedy Central had overreacted to a veiled threat from a tiny blog or website that not many people even belong to, and I think it just set a precedent for a slippery slope in censorship,” Fox News quoted Norris as saying.

“If artists have to be afraid of what they draw, then what’s the point of even living here? That”s what really bothered me,” she added.

As of May 19, more than 41,000 Facebook users associated themselves to one page dedicated to the event, and a similar page was “liked” by at least 4,400 users.

Meanwhile, over 56,000 users joined a Facebook page opposing it.

And in Pakistan, a court on Wednesday ordered the government to block Facebook pages associated with the campaign until May 31.

Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad to be blasphemous, and it is a crime punishable by death.

“The court also has ordered the foreign ministry to investigate why such a competition is being held,” said Azhar Siddique, a representative of the Islamic Lawyers Forum who filed a petition in the Lahore High Court.

Organizers of the Facebook page protesting the drawing campaign are calling for users to boycott the social networking site for the company”s inaction against the ‘Everybody Draw Mohammad’ pages.

Some say the campaign is nothing more than a way to incite Muslims.

A Facebook spokesman told FoxNews.com it has no plans to censor any of the pages associated with the campaign or the counter-campaign, though threats will be removed. (ANI)

Megan Fox out of ‘Transformers 3’?

Washington, May 20 (ANI): Actress Megan Fox has been reportedly dropped from ‘Transformers 3’.

According to a report from Access Hollywood, a source who works at Paramount, the studio that produces the film, said Fox’s character would not be revived in the third installment of “Transformers,” as producers want to take Shia LaBeouf’s character Sam Witwicky in a different direction, reports Fox News.

Director Michael Bay apparently made the decision months after Fox compared his work approach on set to that of “Hitler” and “Napoleon.”

Production on the third installment has already begun, according to reports. (ANI)

Washington, May 19 (ANI): The cover art of former Playmate Kendra Wilkinson’s sex tape has been revealed. However, the date of its release has been postponed to June over ‘legal issues’.

Miss Oklahoma lost Miss USA 2010 crown due to Arizona immigration law?

New York, May 18 (ANI): It has emerged that Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard may have lost the coveted Miss USA 2010 title due to the Arizona immigration law.

Woolard had finished first runner-up to winner Rima Fakih of Michigan, and conspiracy theorists are grumbling that her support of SB 1070 may have cost her the crown.

According to Fox News, when “The Office” star Oscar Nunez posed Miss Oklahoma a question about where she stood on Arizona’s SB 1070, the crowd erupted in boos over the intrusion of politics.

“I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” the New York Daily News quoted Woolard as saying of the law which requires state police to stop and question possible undocumented immigrants.

“So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law,” she had stated. (ANI)

Jonathan Rhys Meyers uses N-word against airline staff: Report

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was banned from boarding a United Airlines flight after he used racial slurs against an employee last month in a drunken outburst.

As per reports from RadarOnline.com, the Irish actor, star “The Tudors,” reportedly used the “N” word when he was reprimanded for drunk and disorderly conduct inside a first class lounge earlier this month, says Fox News.

Meyers was accused of drinking excessively in the wee hours at New York City’s JFK airport while waiting to board a flight to Los Angeles.

The employees didn’t allow him to get on the flight on seeing his quarrelsome behaviour, following which shouted the ‘N word’ at them.

This is not the first time Meyers has landed in trouble.

After his second stint in rehab, Meyers was arrested in 2007 at a Dublin airport for allegedly being drunk, but the charges were dropped later.

Two years later, just three months out of his third stint, he was arrested for allegedly attacking staff in a Paris airport bar. (ANI)

Photos of Miss USA in stripping contest emerge

Washington, May 18 (ANI): It has emerged that Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih had taken part in a stripping contest sponsored by a Detroit radio station.

According to MyFOXDC.com, 23-year-old Fakih appeared in several photos on Mojointhemorning.com, a morning show on Detroit”s Channel 955.

Two of the photos are from a strip tease contest held in 2007, and show Fakih performing on a stripper pole in front of an audience of women dressed in their underwear.

“Congratulations to Miss Michigan, Rima Fakih who was crowned Miss USA on Sunday night! Rima is a Dearborn resident and the first Arab American to wear the crown,” Fox News quoted the site as stating.

“Rima is a Mojo In The Morning listener who has joined us in studio and at events. Check out Miss USA Rima Fakih when she won Mojo In The Morning”s ”Stripper 101” contest in 2007,” it stated.

According to the website, the judges were strippers, and awarded Fakih first prize. The prizes included jewellery, gift cards, adult toys and a stripper pole for home use.

Only women attended the event, and Fakih never removed her clothing at the event, the radio station said in a statement.

Miss Universe representatives have contacted producers of Mojo In The Morning and requested more photographs and information regarding Fakih”s involvement in the ”Stripper 101” contest.

When asked if Fakih”s status as Miss USA was in danger, pageant representatives would not answer.

Morning show host Mojo says the controversial photographs were taken from their website where they have been posted for three years.

He said Mojo In The Morning will not release any further photographs and hopes that Donald Trump does not ask Fakih to relinquish her crown.

“It would be foolish to consider anyone other than Rima to represent the USA. The photos taken from our website are no more provocative than those on the Miss USA website,” he added. (ANI)

BP CEO says Gulf oil-slick is tiny when compared to a big ocean

New York, May 15 (ANI): The chief executive of BP, Tony Hayward, has shamelessly tried to extenuate his companys colossal mistake by saying that the oil-slick in the Gulf of Mexico is relatively tiny when compared to the very big ocean.

The Gulf oil-spill has the makings of the biggest ecological disaster in US history. Its devastating ramifications will be borne by the aquatic life in the area for years to come, experts say.

“The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume,” Fox News quoted an impenitent Hayward as saying.

U.S. officials estimate that at least 5,000 barrels of oil per day are leaking from a pipeline more than 5,000 feet deep that was damaged more than three weeks ago by an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig, which later sunk.

Eleven workers died in the disaster.

Hayward told The Guardian that BP would “fix” the disaster, “We will fix it. I guarantee it,” he told the newspaper. “The only question is we do not know when.” (ANI)

‘Boobquake’ cleric defends earthquake-promiscuity link

Washington, May 15 (ANI): The Iranian cleric, who claimed last month that promiscuity and immodest dress cause earthquakes, has defended his argument.

Kazem Sedighi insists God may be holding off on natural disasters in the West in order to let people sin more and relegate themselves to hell.

Sedighi’s preaching created a buzz on the web last month, as blogger Jennifer McCreight of Indiana asked women to show as much cleavage as possible through a Facebook page named Boobquake, reports Fox News.

Seidighi had said: “Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.”

Now, the cleric is back defending his concept.

Sedighi notes that some might ask why there aren”t more earthquakes and storms striking Western nations that are “up to their necks” in immorality.

He says the answer is that God allows some of those who “provoke His wrath” to continue sinning “so that they (eventually) go to the bottom of Hell.”

Meanwhile, on the lines of ‘Boobquake,’ a new Facebook group called for ‘Brainquake’, a day for women to “show off their resumes, CVs, honors, prizes, and accomplishments.” (ANI)

Chaos at Wikipedia in wake of porn purging activity

Washington, May 15 (ANI): A massive re-organization appears to be taking place at Wikipedia, as co-founder Jimmy Wales has relinquished his top-level control over the encyclopaedia”s content, as well as all of its parent company”s projects.

The shake-up followed the growing controversy surrounding pornographic images that appear on the online encyclopaedia.

Despite remaining the President of the organisation, Wales can no longer delete files, remove administrators, assign projects or edit any content – he has been brought down to a low-level administrator.

“He had the highest level of control, he was our leader,” Fox News quoted a source as saying, who also said that there was total chaos and no one was in-charge for the moment.

Wales had personally deleted many of the images from Wikimedia”s servers, and that he”d ordered that thousands more be purged. Now many of those images have been restored to their original web pages.

Recently, a fiery debate has been surrounding the issue, concerning whether the images are really pornographic or not, and whether they should be deleted.

One lengthy e-mail response read in part:

“In essence, right now Jimbo is deleting things based on his singular judgment about what should be allowed…. This is a large change and lack of a clear policy creates a very confusing and frustrating environment for editors. (Multiple Commons admins have already stated their intention to resign and/or retire over this.)”

But Wales’ act of defending his actions only invited further trouble.

One administrator wrote, “If this is an emergency situation requiring a justified, immediate, unilateral, king-like massive action, I regret Mr. Wales didn”t take the time to explain the emergency to us.

“By rush-imposing his views and decisions on people who are not out of the debate yet, he is browbeating their inner self, ignoring their beliefs and opinions, discarding the value of the Other.

“This lack of respect and of equality of vote should be extremely well argumented and the reasons transparently communicated. Otherwise, trust, faith and adhesion to the [Wikimedia Foundation] values dissolve. I don”t think we should let this happen. Mr. Wales, I hope you enter reason and dialogue realms again….”

By Thursday, the discussion had devolved into an all-out war pitting board members against board members, and with top leadership sparring with lower level administrators. (ANI)

Americans optimistic about economy, pessimistic about jobs

Washington, May 14 (ANI): A majority of American voters believe the nation””s economy is improving, but an equal number believe the job situation is getting worse, according to the latest Fox News poll.

Many more voters continue to say former President George W. Bush is responsible for the federal deficit.

The new poll finds 49 percent of voters think the economy is getting better, while 37 percent say it is getting worse and 11 percent say “staying the same.”

The number saying things are getting better is up 9 percentage points from 40 percent who thought so a year ago (June 2009).

But when it comes to jobs, it””s the reverse: 36 percent say it””s getting better and 48 percent getting worse.

On a personal level, 36 percent say it feels like things are getting better for their family, while about the same number — 38 percent — says it feels like things are getting worse. Another 24 percent say it feels like things are staying the same.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll for Fox News among 900 registered voters from May 4 to May 5. For the total sample, the poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. (ANI)

Thousands protest Empire State Building”s snub of Mother Teresa

New York, May 14 (ANI): The Catholic League has launched a nation-wide petition after Empire State Building authorities denied a request to commemorate Mother Teresa”s 100th birthday.

Fox News reported that Bill Donohue, president of the New York-based Catholic civil rights organization, submitted an application to the Empire State Building Lighting Partners in February to have the skyscraper feature blue and white lights — the colors of Mother Teresa”s congregation — on August 26 to commemorate her centennial.

The request was denied without explanation last week, and more than 6,000 people have signed a protest petition in just one day, Donohue told Fox News.

“I”d like to find out what”s driving this, but I”m confident it”s just a matter of time before we win on this thing,” he added.

Donohue noted that the iconic building in midtown Manhattan changed its colors to red and yellow last year to honor the 60th anniversary of China”s Communist Revolution.

Donohue called on Anthony Malkin, owner of the Empire State Building, to reverse the decision.

“Mother Teresa received 124 awards, including Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Freedom. She built hundreds of orphanages, hospitals, hospices, health clinics, homeless shelters, youth shelters and soup kitchens all over the world … Not surprisingly, she was voted the most admired woman in the world three years in a row in the mid-1990s. But she is not good enough to be honored by the Empire State Building,” Donohue said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the building”s public relations firm declined comment Thursday when reached by Fox News. (ANI)

Three Pak men arrested in NY over alleged links to Times Square bombing plot

New York , May 14 (ANI): US security agencies have detained three suspicious men, all from Pakistan, in connection with the botched Times Square bombing plot in raids conducted across several locations in Boston suburbs.

According to Fox News, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Customs Enforcement agents executed search warrants in various locations in the Northeast.

Raids were conducted in Boston suburbs, where two suspects were apprehended while the third arrest was made from Maine.

Search warrants related to the failed New York bombing plot were also executed in Camden County, and on Long Island in New York.

Confirming the arrest of three people, Attorney General Eric Holder said the men have links with Faisal Shahzad, the confessed bomb plotter, but the exact nature of those connections are still unclear.

“There”s at least a basis to believe that one of the things that they did was provide him with funds,” Holder said.

Officials said the New England men have been arrested on “administrative charges” related to immigration violations.

Sources said the arrested men may have “unwittingly assisted in some capacity”, infact they believe that Shahzad may have duped the men into providing money.

US officials are also investigating the possibility of Shahzad using the ‘Hawala” system to get money for his terror plot.

“Hawala”, which is famous in South Asia, is an informal value transfer system in which money does not pass through the banking system, instead funds are transferred to an operator in one country, and corresponding funds, less any fees, are sent to recipients in another country.

Earlier, US officials claimed that Pakistani security agencies have arrested a man having links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who claims that he assisted Shahzad.

American officials declined to identify the suspect, but said US investigators have direct access to him, and described him as a facilitator for the TTP. (ANI)

2010 Congressional election remains close, 2012 split evenly

Washington, May 13 (ANI): If a Congressional election were held today in the United States, 42 percent of voters would back the Republican candidate in their district, while 40 percent would support the Democrat, according to the latest Fox News poll.

According to the poll, most Republicans (86 percent) back their party”s candidate and most Democrats (80 percent) back theirs, and independents are divided.

By 37-31 percent independent voters are somewhat more likely to back the Republican candidate, while 20 percent are undecided.

A similar split is seen when the question is about voting in the 2012 presidential election: 41 percent would back Barack Obama, and 41 percent the Republican Party”s candidate.

In one hypothetical three-way race with New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg as a third-party candidate, President Obama (42 percent) has a clear advantage over both the unnamed Republican candidate (29 percent) and Bloomberg (10 percent).

In a two-way race, independents are more likely to back the Republican nominee (38 percent) over Obama (28 percent).

In the three-way vote, Obama keeps almost all of his independent support (25 percent), while the Republican candidate (18 percent) loses a significant amount of support to Bloomberg (19 percent).

Either way, for many independents it”s too soon to say how they will vote in 2012.

Overall, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (42 percent favorable) has the highest favorable rating of the potential 2012 Republican candidates in the poll.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (40 percent favorable) and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (37 percent favorable) follow him closely.

Among only Republicans, Palin (65 percent favorable) and Huckabee (64 percent favorable) lead the field — topping Romney (59 percent favorable) and Gingrich (51 percent).

By comparison, President Obama has a 53 percent favorable rating overall, and a 91 percent favorable among Democrats.

Twenty-eight percent of voters have a positive view of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as do 49 percent of Democrats.

Former First Lady Laura Bush receives a 68 percent favorable rating, which is the highest positive rating of the individuals tested on the poll.

The national telephone poll was conducted for Fox News by Opinion Dynamics Corp. among 900 registered voters from May 4 to May 5. For the total sample, the poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. (ANI)
